  • Database of common translated phrases for localization?

    I'd like to localize my app into a few other languages, all of which I can barely order a drink in. Does anyone know of an online resource for translations of common software menu options, messages, etc. into other languages? Given the number of developers (both OSS and closed-source) that deal with localization, and the overlap of resource strings between, it seems like a pretty obvious fit for a wiki or open source package, but I can't seem to find anything like this. I could try to mine the Windows resource files or dig around in resource strings in robust OSS apps like Firefox, but I suspect I'm not the first person to think of this and surely there is a site that I'm just not finding yet. Update: since nothing exists like this that I could find, I started a feeble attempt at an open-source string library.   • How to retrieve a binary file from .NET assembly?

    I have an excel file that I want to embed in my C# assembly. I have changed the build action of the XLSX file to "Embedded Resource". During runtime, I have to retrieve this XLSX file from the assembly. Assembly assembly = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly(); StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(assembly.GetManifestResourceStream("AssemblyName.Output.xlsx"), true); StreamWriter sw = new StreamWriter(strPath); sw.Write(sr.ReadToEnd()); sr.Dispose(); sw.Dispose(); System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(strPath); As expected, this fails for the XLSX file since it is a binary data. This could works well with a text file. I tried binary read/write, but I am not able to get the code running. Thoughts?

  • How to use will_paginate with a nested resource in Rails?

    I'm new to Rails, and I'm having major trouble getting will_paginate to work with a nested resource. I have two models, Statement and Invoice. will_paginate is working on Statement, but I can't get it to work on Invoice.   • Squid handling of concurrent cache misses

    We're using a Squid cache to off-load traffic from our web servers, ie. it's setup as a reverse-proxy responding to inbound requests before they hit our web servers. When we get blitzed with concurrent requests for the same request that's not in the cache, Squid proxies all the requests through to our web ("origin") servers. For us, this behavior isn't ideal: our origin servers gets bogged down trying to fulfill N identical requests concurrently. Instead, we'd like the first request to proxy through to the origin server, the rest of the requests to queue at the Squid layer, and then all be fulfilled by Squid when the origin server has responded to that first request. Does anyone know how to configure Squid to do this? We've read through the documentation multiple times and thoroughly web-searched the topic, but can't figure out how to do it. We use Akamai too and, interestingly, this is its default behavior. (However, Akamai has so many nodes that we still see lots of concurrent requests in certain traffic spike scenarios, even with Akamai's super-node feature enabled.) This behavior is clearly configurable for some other caches, eg. the Ehcache documentation offers the option "Concurrent Cache Misses: A cache miss will cause the filter chain, upstream of the caching filter to be processed. To avoid threads requesting the same key to do useless duplicate work, these threads block behind the first thread." Some folks call this behavior a "blocking cache," since the subsequent concurrent requests block behind the first request until it's fulfilled or timed-out. Thx for looking over my noob question!   • xval get message from resource file

    I'm working on a CMS system which uses a resource file to get information and errormessages from. The client side validation is working without problems, only it's not getting the errormessage from the resource file. While debugging i figured out xval seems to get the errormessages from a javascript file where the messages are set hard-coded. Is there some way to override this? Below the code which should make the relation to the resourcefile en specify the error when the field is left empty. I expect this list to be varied and to cover a wide range of things. For me, the book would be Code Complete. After reading that book, I was able to get out of the immediate task mindset and begin to think about the bigger picture, quality and maintainability.

  • COM Pointers and process termination

    Can an unreleased COM pointer to an external process (still alive) cause that process to hang on destruction? Even with TerminateProcess called on it? Process A has a COM interface pointer reference to Process B, now Process B issues a TerminateProcess on A, if some COM interface pointer to Process B in Process A is not released properly, could it be that the process hangs on termination?

  • Visual Studio keeps changing resx files

    Hello everyone ! I'm working on a VB.Net project and using SVN. I noticed that every time I use my main form, Visual studio slightly modifies my .resx file, which means that I keep having to re-commit it, which is quite an annoying thing. Has anybody experienced such problems?   • Open source VideoPlayer / AudioPlayer / MediaPlayer GUI / UI resource available?

    Hi, I'm looking for a user interface for a MediaPlayer which should be able to play video as well as audio files. Furthermore it needs the following things (nothing fancy): TextView for playing time Progress Bar for progress visulization Play/Pause/Stop buttons NO playlist functionality required, the player will only play a single item (that's why I don't need next/previous buttons). It sounds pretty much like the standard audio-player of Android = 2.0. Sure, I could try to find its source code but that would require to tediously check out the entire source.   • Problems wih minSdkVersion 1.5

    Hello, we have a problem related to the manifest file and the property "android:minSdkVersion". The issue is: If our platform is 2.0 and we use the property "android:minSdkVersion=3" (3 = sdk 1.5) the graphics get corrupted (In details, the application's resolution get reduced to a 2/3 part of the original size, this is, when the resolution should be 480x720, it becomes in a 320x480). This is happening on the Android emulator, and on the devices Droid/Milestone (Which are platforms 2.0). When we switch the property to "android:minSdkVersion=4" (4 = sdk 1.6) the problem gets solved, but when we want to put that version on platform 1.5, Android doesn't allow us to install it. It would help us to know any conflict regarding graphics within the 2.0 sdk, or any known problem around the "android:minSdkVersion" in the manifest. Thanks!

  • Is it wrong to get feedback from Stack Overflow on a live system architecture?

    I am the technical director at a startup, and I will eventually be tasked with implementing a "real" system architecture when we hire more programmers. Right now our clients are small enough, and it is just me, so documented deployments, source control, unit tests and quality assurance servers are non-existent. Eventually I will need to devise a work-flow and architecture patterns for the majority of the work we will do (e-commerce). If I posted an architecture diagram, and asked for feedback, would that be a misuse of the Stack Overflow system? I don't want to get into that battle of "hey, don't ask us to do your job for you", but the reality is that any programmer who eventually moves into this realm will have to figure it out with feedback from other developers. HighScalability.com is what comes to mind when I think about this sorta thing in terms of the knowledge I need. So if this is not the right kind of forum for that, then any book recommendations or white papers you can recommend would be appreciated.

  • Visual Studio Editor, MEF in-Depth

    I have been having difficulty simply writing a Visual Studio Editor Extension with MEF (Managed Extensiblity Framework). I thank those who answered my previous question, as they helped me know that I need to work with MEF. I've been trying to learn MEF for the Visual Studio Editor from MSDN's page, Extending the Editor, but it appears that I have a hard time understanding it. Can anyone provide strong resource or tutorials in addressing problem such as using the right ContentTypeDefintion (IGlyphFactory, TextMarkTag, etc...), and what is a ITagger. I need to understand these things, as most of the walkthrough only extending the text, such as only using the "spans" functionality, while I need to use "selection" methods and use MouseEventHandlers. Does anyone know an example similiar to my example, or references can tell me something about MEF's for VS editor in-depth?

  • How to hand-over a TCP listening socket with minimal downtime?

    While this question is tagged EventMachine, generic BSD-socket solutions in any language are much appreciated too. Some background: I have an application listening on a TCP socket. It is started and shut down with a regular System V style init script. My problem is that it needs some time to start up before it is ready to service the TCP socket. It's not too long, perhaps only 5 seconds, but that's 5 seconds too long when a restart needs to be performed during a workday. It's also crucial that existing connections remain open and are finished normally. Reasons for a restart of the application are patches, upgrades, and the like. I unfortunately find myself in the position that, every once in a while, I need to do this kind of thing in production. The question: I'm looking for a way to do a neat hand-over of the TCP listening socket, from one process to another, and as a result get only a split second of downtime. I'd like existing connections / sockets to remain open and finish processing in the old process, while the new process starts servicing new connectinos. Is there some proven method of doing this using BSD-sockets? (Bonus points for an EventMachine solution.) Are there perhaps open-source libraries out there implementing this, that I can use as is, or use as a reference? (Again, non-Ruby and non-EventMachine solutions are appreciated too!)

Example: One of my apps retrieves some content from a external resource in a fixed interval. I have imagined the following scenarios: Run it in a single machine. Problem: if this instance falls, the content won't be retrieved Run it in each machine of the cluster. Problem: the content will be retrieved multiple times Have it in each machine of the cluster, but run it only in one of them. Each instance will have to check some sort of common resource to decide whether it its turn to do the task or not. When I was thinking about the solution #3 I have wondered what should be the common resource. I have thought of creating a table in the database, where we could use it to get a global lock. Is this the best solution? How does people usually do this? By the way it's a C# .NET WCF app running on Windows Server 2008

  • How can I extract the original image stream from a System.Drawing.Bitmap object?

    I am embedding images into my assembly using .resx files. Upon runtime, I need to save the images into standalone files, restoring the original content. How can I extract the original file stream from an System.Drawing.Bitmap instance? I know I can create a stream using Bitmap.Save(), but this transcodes (and in effect - inflates) the images, even when saving a PNG back as PNG. Or perhaps my mistake is reading them from Resource as Bitmap in the first place?

  • Checking COM Port Availability in C#

    Hello. My C# application populates a comboBox with the COM ports found on the system. I would like the mark the COM ports that are in use as such. I know that I can use try / catch blocks to attempt to open every COM port, but I was wondering if there is a more graceful way to do this. Perhaps using a WMI query? I am using Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express Edition (.NET 2.0). Any thoughts or suggestions you may have would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Rails method as a nested resource

    Hello, I'm wondering about the clever way to do this... I have methods that return a value when passed an an object as parameter, such as: <%= average_rainfall(@location) % I'd like to use the exact same methods as a nested resource to call via jQuery/Ajax, like so: .load('/location/8/average_rainfall') I understand how to define the route, but how do I tell my method to 'find' /location/8 and use that as it's parameter instead of @location as expected? Thanks!
