• HTML element to use as a Javascript message display

  I have a message display field on my website that I'd like to change the value of via JS. I've been using just a textfield, disabling it, and modifying the value via a JS function (after using a little CSS to make it not look like a text field): <input type="text" id="message" style="background: white; color: black" size="50" disabled> There has to be a better way (for instance, formatting is tricky whenever the message runs over the specified size), but I can't think of it off the top of my head. Can anyone point me in a better direction? Thanks! FYI: I am doing a timer function which I'd like to look something like "HH:MM:SS | 'my message here'"

• Android 2.2: Screen brightness/timeout question

  Im using the following code to adjust the brightness of the screen: public void SetBright(float value) { Window mywindow = getWindow(); WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = mywindow.getAttributes(); lp.screenBrightness = value; mywindow.setAttributes(lp); } But i want the brightness to be 0% for a specific time. But when i use SetBright(0.0f), i cant change it back. I made a timer that runs for a minute with 0% brightness, then turns it back to 100%. Works when i use 10% for example. But when i turn it to 0% i cant seem to wake it up again. Any ideas how to solve this?

• How to prevent the copying of text from a textarea?

  I have an online typing software, which I'm currently working on. In the typing software, all is running good but I have come across the problem of dishonest users who might possibly type the text into the textarea, copy it, then reload the page (therefore resetting the timer) and pasting it in straightaway. So I was thinking along the lines of using something like evt.preventDefault(); when javascript detects the pressing of the ctrl / cmd button. But then again I realized that the user could go to the menu bar to press copy. So is there a cross-browser method to do both methods of disabling?   yesterday I noticed the possibility to integrate Fragments in older API Levels through the Compatibility package, but thats not really essential for the question. :) I have a Button with an OnClickListener Button button = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button); button.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { doSomething(); button.setPressed(true); } }); Because of the actual clicking, it is shown as pressed and after releasing the click, the button state is not pressed and stays that way. Is there a simple way that keeps the button state pressed after releasing? First thing I can think of would be some sort of timer, but that seems unreasonable.

• What is faster? Drawing or Compositing?

  I make extensive use of -drawRect: to do some nice animations. A timer tries to fire 30 times per second with -setNeedsDisplay, but it feels like just 20 times. Also I can't use -setNeedsDisplayInRect: because the animation covers the entire thing. Would it help to take some of those drawing operations out of -drawRect: and move them to a subview? -drawRect has to do less then, but instead the OS will have more work with compositing views. Is there a rule of thumb which one is more worse? I remember from an apple text that they claimed Core Animation doesn't redraw during animation. So is that their secret of speed? Using subviews in animations?

• Windows Service suddenly doing nothing

  Hi, My windows service is using a Thread (not a timer) which is always looping and sleeps for 1 second every loop using : evet.WaitOne(interval); When I start the service it works fine and I can see in the task manager that it is running, consuming and releasing memory, consuming processor ... etc that is all normal, but after a while (random amount of time) the service simply stops!! it is still there in the task manager but it is not consuming any processor work now and its consumption to the memory is not changing. it simply (died but still there in the task manager like a Zombie). I know that many exceptions might have happened during running the service (it is really doing many things) but all those exceptions are handled in Try catch blocks, so why is my "always looping" thread stops ??? This thread also logs every time he loops, when he is freezig in this way he is not logging anything (of course)

  Hi I'm using the below method to write to a file from the Jtextarea and I call this method every 30 second within a Timer but instead to add only new line in file it rewrite the entire lines contained in Jtextarea so then I have duplicate lines. I want to avoid this and update the file just with new lines. • How do I measure the time elapsed when calling a WCF Webservice?

  We want to track the time taken by a web service call between a client and the server. This time should not include the time taken by the server to process the request. The idea is that we want to see how much time of a web service call is lost due to the actual transfer trough the network. Does WCF already offer something in this direction? Of course I could just add a timer on the client and subtract the server processing time but that wouldn't be very elegant.

  I'm trying to animate a chess piece in a board. First I created a java.util.Timer object that "scheduleAtFixedRate" a TimerTask implemented as a proxy function. So I kept a record of the piece to move (piece-moving-record) and when it's apropriate (when the user move the piece using the mouse) the TimerTask proxy function should be test if the record is not nil and execute the piece-moving function. The piece-moving function just updates the x and y coordinates of the piece, according to a vector pre-calculated. I put a add-watch on the piece-moving-record so when it changes it should repaint the board (canvas). The paint method tests if this piece-moving-record is not nil to paint it. The problem is that the animation doesn't appear. The piece just jump to the destiny, without the movement between. There is some problem with the animation scheme ou there is a better way to do it?

• Java Non-Blocking HTTP Server

  I have written an application using embedded Jetty that makes network calls to other services. I presume that the serving threads are idle whilst waiting for the network calls to complete. Is there any way to have a worker thread that switches between requests to perform work that can be done at the current time and then when the network calls return also handle that? A request would be returned when all work has been completed for it. I know this is a common paradigm, and I have used it for non-blocking TCP networking, but I'm unsure as to how to achieve this on a Java HTTP server whilst also waiting on external results. Any links or explanations are appreciated. Thanks

• dynamically updating a datagrid from a XML file c# 3.5

  I have a datagrid that is populated via XML file when the form loads. Everything is working great but I would like the datagrid to update dynamically when a new order is received (Separate class receives a data stream and updates the file). Im looking for suggestions on how this should be done. (ie using a timer update every second, or monitor the file using FileSystemWatcher.. etc) Since where here, I might as well mention that in order to update the datagrid Im clearing the whole data set and Re-reading the file using: DataSet.Clear(); DataSet.ReadXml("file.xml"); dataGridView1.DataSource = DataSet; if this is not the proper approach, please offer any alternate suggestions.

  Hi, lang: c#.net 2.0 I have a Application X, that calls SubWindows 1, 2 and 3. I will Pop up a MessageBox, when 1, 2 or 3 is opened. My idea is a timer that ticks every 3 seconds and checks if the windows are opened. But how to find the 3 exact windows? Can I use a Window-Handle-Spy-Application and Hardcode the Window-Handles in my code to find them ever? Or change the window handle when the Application X is opened new?

  When implementing the interpreter for my programming language I first thought of a simple console window which allows the user to enter some code which is then executed as a standalone program as a shell. But there are severe problems: If every line of code the user enters is handled as a standalone program, it has to go through the tokenizer and parser and is then just executed by the interpreter - what about functions then? How can the Python/Ruby interactive consoles (IDLE, irb) "share" the code? How is the code entered handled? How can the interactive console take everything entered as obviously one program without executing everything over and over again?

• How can I request local pages in the background of an ASP.NET MVC app?

  My ASP.NET MVC app needs to run a set of tasks at startup and in the background at a regular interval. I have implemented each task as a controller action and listed the app-relative path to the action in the database. I implemented a TaskRunner process that gets the urls from the database and requests each one at a regular interval using WebRequest.Create, but this throws a UriFormatException. I cannot use this answer or any code that plucks values from HttpContext.Current.Request without getting an HttpException with the message "Request is not available in this context". The Request object is not available because my code uses System.Threading.Timer to do background processing, as recommended here. Here are my questions: Is there really no way to make local web requests within an ASP.NET web app? Is there really no way to dynamically ascertain the root path to the web app even using static dependencies in ASP.NET? I was trying to avoid storing the app's root path in the database (as FogBugz does with its "Maintenance Path"), but is this best option?

• How to animate stuff when using -drawRect: ?

  I didn't use subviews but painted my things with -drawRect: inside an UIView subclass. Now I want to do some animations in there. I guess that I can't count on core animation now since I have no subviews. So how would I animate then? Would I set up a timer which fires like 30 times per second? How would I know the animation step? Would I make an ivar which counts the frame of the animation so that I can do my stuff in -drawRect as it gets called?

  I have an MVVM kiosk application that I need to restart when it has been inactive for a set amount of time. I'm using Prism and Unity to facilitate the MVVM pattern. I've got the restarting down and I even know how to handle the timer. What I want to know is how to know when activity, that is any mouse event, has taken occurred. The only way I know how to do that is by subscribing to the preview mouse events of the main window. That breaks MVVM thought, doesn't it? I've thought about exposing my window as an interface that exposes those events to my application, but that would require that the window implement that interface which also seems to break MVVM.

• how to save the compose message text in draft automatically ?

  Hello, we have a vb.net application with send and receive mailing also. Now we have added a session timer of 30 min but the users are complaining that they are facing a problem when they write a long text message or while composing they get busy in something else and when they return back to continue composing message , they are redirected to a session expiry page, and their long text message is gone forever. So I am new to this and I was thinking like , when the user is in compose message the text should be automatically saved to drafts like hotmail. Any help will be appreciated . Thank you.

  I am trying to get the user idle state of my Windows Mobile device. When I run the function GetSystemPowerState (after 15 min of not touching the device) I get the following value: Dec: 302055424 Hex: 0x12010000 Bin: 10010000000010000000000000000 I was hoping that PowerState & POWER_STATE_USERIDLE == POWER_STATE_USERIDLE would be true. But POWER_STATE_USERIDLE is 0x01000000 and I have 0x02000000. I went to look up 0x02000000 and found that it is not in pm.h. What does 0x02000000 mean? Where could I go to find out?

• cannot read but can write on serial port through Android Emulator

  I am working on a program that is communicating with serial port over USB through Android emulator. emulator -qemu -serial /dev/ttyUSB0 The emulator is able to open the port and write into it. However, read is not happening. The program has a timeout for read maintained by a timer. The read happens in a separate 'read' thread. The main thread has a socketpair fd pair to signal the read-thread that the serial port is closed post timeout. In the read-thread, polling happens(poll() function call) over the 2 file-descriptors: one is serial port fd, the other is one of the socketpair. The board that I have connected to works fine with sending commands over 'cutecom' The poll never succeeds for serial port. However, poll succeeds for 'socketpair'ed fd and the thread ends on a close-signal sent from main-thread post timeout. Ouestions: Are there any special settings for read as even loop-back fails Are there differences between settings for read and write on a serial port?

• Reflection & Parameters in C#

  Hello, I'm writing an application that runs "things" to a schedule. Idea being that the database contains assembly, method information and also the parameter values. The timer will come along, reflect the method to be run, add the parameters and then execute the method. Everything is fine except for the parameters. So, lets say the method accepts an ENUM of CustomerType where CustomerType has two values of CustomerType.Master and CustomerType.Associate. EDIT I don't the type of parameter that will be getting passed in. ENUM used as an example END OF EDIT We want to run Method "X" and pass in parameter "CustomerType.Master". In the database, there will be a varchar entry of "CustomerType.Master". How do I convert the string "CustomerType.Master" into a type of CustomerType with a value of "Master" generically?   My website has been giving me intermittent errors when trying to perform any Ajax activities. The message I get is Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: The message received from the server could not be parsed. Common causes for this error are when the response is modified by calls to Response.Write(), response filters, HttpModules, or server trace is enabled. Details: Error parsing near ' So its obviously some sort of server timeout or the server's just returning back mangled garbage. This generally, unfortunately not always, happens when the site has been idle for a while. Anybody else been able to overcome this? Thanks

• DLL Load Failed, Not a Valid Win32 App showing for both x86 & x64 DLLs

  Trying to run the latest version of heatmap. http://jjguy.com/heatmap/ DLL load keeps crapping out on me in both 64 & 32 bit dlls. (Similar questions on this seemed irrelevant as I've tried loading both DLLs) I'm running Windows 7. I have uninstalled and re-installed 2.7.3 64 bit. Idle Top line: Python 2.7.3 (default, Apr 10 2012, 23:24:47) [MSC v.1500 64 bit (AMD64)] on win32 I've tried loading C:\Python27\DLLs\cHeatmap-x86.dll ImportError: DLL load failed: %1 is not a valid Win32 application. C:\Python27\DLLs\cHeatmap-x64.dll ImportError: DLL load failed: %1 is not a valid Win32 application. I can run heatmap 1.1 but that was before DLLs were added.
