• Is there a way to share a scanner with an Airport Extreme?

  I've got an Airport Extreme as my home network's router. (Sidebar: I love it.) The printer sharing is pretty phenomenal - I've got my printer hooked up to the base station and all the machines in the house can print to it just fine. However, I have one of those combined scanner/printers, and nothing on the lan seems to be able to see the scanner. Is there a way to get the Airport Extreme / Bonjour to also share the scanner half of the device? For the record, this is an all Windows LAN, so I'm using Bonjour for Windows to get the print sharing to work. Also, I'm hoping to not add a whole stack of extra software to the ecosystem - only one machine in the house needs the scanner, so I can just plug the printer back into that machine and share the printer that way. Still, the Airport and Bonjour seem fancy enough that this seems like it should be doable.

• Outlook 2010 : "An error occurred when setting schedule permissions"

  Computer: Windows 7 x64 Enterprise. Office 2010 with Outlook 2010. Exchange account and a couple of IMAP accounts connected to the Outlook profile. Error: When attempting to share the calendar with anyone (selected from the address book) by click on "Calendar Permissions" seen here You can add or remove people without issue, except that no matter what, even if nothing is done, just opening the sharing window and closing it, you get an error message that says "An error occurred when setting schedule permissions" Verified that the issue doesnt actually effect the sharing, or the general setting of permissions. The error however is disconcerting to my user, and I would like to alleviate the problem if possible. Thanks!

• Homegroup libraries visible but can't be opened

  I have 2 Windows 7 PCs in a home network. When I create a homegroup, the libraries I share are visible on the opposing machine but when I doubleclick them nothing happens - no error message, nothing at all. It is the same on both computers. The homegroup works to the extent that the printer I shared is visible and can print from the other computer. Only the libraries are inaccessible. What I tried and checked so far, without result: disabling firewall file and printer sharing, MS Networks client enabled in network properties deleting and recreating homegroup reset homegroup by deleting C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking unsharing and sharing again the libraries

• I can connect to Samba server but cannot access shares.

  I'm having trouble getting samba sharing working to access shares. I have setup a stand-alone box running Fedora 16 to use as a file-sharing and web development server. It needs to be able to share files with a Windows 7 PC and a Mac running OSX Snow Leopard. I've setup Samba using the Samba configuration GUI tool on Fedora. Added users to Fedora and connected them as Samba users (which are the same as the Windows and Mac usernames and passwords). The workgroup name is the same as the Windows workgroup. Authentication is set to User. I've allowed Samba and Samba client through the firewall and set the ethernet to a trusted port in the firewall. Both the Windows and Mac machines can connect to the server and view the shares, however when trying to access the shares, Windows throws error: 0x80070035 " Windows cannot access \\SERVERNAME\ShareName." Windows user is not prompted for a username or password when accessing the server (found under "Network Places"). This also happens when connecting with the IP rather than the server name. The Mac can also connect to the server and see the shares but when choosing a share gives the error: The original item for ShareName cannot be found. When connecting via IP, the Mac user is prompted for username and password, which when authenticated gives a list of shares, however when choosing a share to connect to, the error is displayed and the user cannot access the share. Since both machines are acting similarly when trying to access the shares, I assume it is an issue with how Samba is configured. smb.conf: [global] workgroup = workgroup server string = Server log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 50 security = user load printers = yes cups options = raw printcap name = lpstat printing = cups [homes] comment = Home Directories browseable = no writable = yes [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = yes printable = yes [FileServ] comment = FileShare path = /media/FileServ read only = no browseable = yes valid users = user1, user2 [webdev] comment = Web development path = /var/www/html/webdev read only = no browseable = yes valid users = user1 How do I get samba sharing working? UPDATE: I Figured it out, it was because I was sharing a second hard drive. See checked answer below. Speculation 1: Before this box I had another box with the same version of fedora installed (16) and samba working for these same computers. I started up the old machine and copied the smb.conf file from the old machine to the new one (editing the share definitions for the new shares of course) and I still get the same errors on both client machines. The only difference in environment is the hardware and the router. On the old machine the router received a dynamic public IP and assigned dynamic private IPs to each device on the network while the new machine is connected to a router that has a static public IP (still dynamic internal IPs though.) Could either one of these be affecting Samba? Speculation 2: As the directory I am trying to share is actually an entire internal disk, I have tried these things: 1.) changing the owner of the mounted disk from root to my user (which is the same username as on the Windows machine) 2.) made a share that only included one of the folders on the disk instead of the entire disk with my user again as the owner. Both tests failed giving me the same errors regarding the network address. Speculation 3: Whenever I try to connect to the share on the Windows 7 client I am prompted for my username and password. When I enter the correct credentials I get an access denied message. However I did notice that under the login box "domain: WINDOWS-PC-NAME" is listed. I believe this could very well be the problem. Speculation 4: So I've completely reinstalled Fedora and Samba now. I've created a share on the first harddrive (one fedora is installed on) and I can access that fine from Windows. However when I try to share any data on the second disk, I am receiving the same error. This I believe is the problem. I think I need to change some things in fstab or fdisk or something. Speculation 5: So in fstab I mapped the drive to automount in a folder which works correctly. I also added the samba_share_t SElinux label to the mountpoint directory which now allows me to access the shares on the Windows machine, however I cannot see any of the files in the directory on the windows machine. (They are there, I can see them in the fedora file browser locally)

• macports apache,php,db, how do I test on another device?

  My supervisor suggests using macports to install/manage different versions of apache and php, as well as both mysql and posgres databases. The idea is that we need to test our platform on different versions of each. So far I've just been using the default apache installation on osx lion, and the default postgres installation. My question is this: once I turn Web Sharing off, and proceed with a custom apache2 setup based in /opt/local/, how do I broadcast my machine's IP to other devices, for testing? With Web Sharing, I can get my machine's IP and use that to test with an iPad and iPhone. Will that still be the case, and if so, how do I do it?

• Wireless is detected, but not connecting. Ethernet works. How to correct the wireless address?

  I am running Ubuntu 14.04 with cable internet, and my wireless is detected and connected, but I cannot connect to the internet. I know the problem is with my machine because other machines are connecting to the same router just fine. I can connect via ethernet just fine as well. Here are some notable tests: ping 192.168.0.105 works with 0% packet loss, but ping 192.168.0.1 has 100% packet loss. When I plug in my ethernet, ping 192.168.0.1 works with 0% packet loss. My wireless name is tg, and the router ip is 192.168.0.1 (where I can enter username and password). I suspect that I need to change my wireless address from 192.168.0.105 to 192.168.0.1. • String Sharing/Reference issue with objects in Delphi

  My application builds many objects in memory based on filenames (among other string based information). I was hoping to optimise memory usage by storing the path and filename separately, and then sharing the path between objects in the same path. I wasn't trying to look at using a string pool or anything, basically my objects are sorted so if I have 10 objects with the same path I want objects 2-10 to have their path "pointed" at object 1's path (eg object[2].Path=object[1].Path); I have a problem though, I don't believe that my objects are in fact sharing a reference to the same string after I think I am telling them to (by the object[2].Path=object[1].Path assignment). When I do an experiment with a string list and set all the values to point to the first value in the list I can see the "memory conservation" in action, but when I use objects I see absolutely no change at all, admittedly I am only using task manager (private working set) to watch for memory use changes. Here's a contrived example, I hope this makes sense. I have an object: TfileObject=class(Tobject) FpathPart: string; FfilePart: string; end; Now I create 1,000,000 instances of the object, using a new string for each one: var x: integer; MyFilePath: string; fo: TfileObject; begin for x := 1 to 1000000 do begin // create a new string for every iteration of the loop MyFilePath:=ExtractFilePath(Application.ExeName); fo:=TfileObject.Create; fo.FpathPart:=MyFilePath; FobjectList.Add(fo); end; end; Run this up and task manager says I am using 68MB of memory or something. (Note that if I allocated MyFilePath outside of the loop then I do save memory because of 1 instance of the string, but this is a contrived example and not actually how it would happen in the app). Now I want to "optimise" my memory usage by making all objects share the same instance of the path string, since it's the same value: var x: integer; begin for x:=1 to FobjectList.Count-1 do begin TfileObject(FobjectList[x]).FpathPart:=TfileObject(FobjectList[0]).FpathPart; end; end; Task Manager shows absouletly no change. However if I do something similar with a TstringList: var x: integer; begin for x := 1 to 1000000 do begin FstringList.Add(ExtractFilePath(Application.ExeName)); end; end; Task Manager says 60MB memory use. Now optimise with: var x: integer; begin for x := 1 to FstringList.Count - 1 do FstringList[x]:=FstringList[0]; end; Task Manager shows the drop in memory usage that I would expect, now 10MB. So I seem to be able to share strings in a string list, but not in objects. I am obviously missing something conceptually, in code or both! I hope this makes sense, I can really see the ability to conserve memory using this technique as I have a lot of objects all with lots of string information, that data is sorted in many different ways and I would like to be able to iterate over this data once it is loaded into memory and free some of that memory back up again by sharing strings in this way. • random lags in music when playing on any music player

  guys I have experienced this issue in most of all the music players i tried in ubuntu 12.10. When ever I play a track I experience certain issue, like the track just skipped a second or two. This happens occasionally but at least 4-5 times when ever i play any music track. The actual thing is that the track fast forwards by just 1 or 2 secs and then runs on normal rate. This used to happen during a video, but now it doesn't. But for the music this issue has not stopped. ASRock mootherboard,core2 duo. Also I get ubuntu 12.10 has experienced an internal error(its regarding nautilus). Also the Software Update always gives an internet connection connection error whereas I am able to browse the web and download with ease. Please reply..

• IE9 not rendering box-shadow Elements inside of Table Cells

  Ran into an annoying problem today with IE 9. Slowly updating some older sites with CSS 3 tags and for the most part IE9 does a reasonably decent job of working with the new CSS 3 features. Not all by a long shot but at least some of the more useful ones like border-radius and box-shadow are supported. Until today I was happy to see that IE supported box-shadow just fine, but I ran into a problem with some old markup that uses tables for its main layout sections. I found that inside of a table cell IE fails to render a box-shadow. Below are images from Chrome (left) and IE 9 (right) of the same content: The download and purchase images are rendered with: <a href="download.asp" style="display:block;margin: 10px;"><img src="../images/download.gif" class="boxshadow roundbox" /></a> where the .boxshadow and .roundbox styles look like this:.boxshadow { -moz-box-shadow: 3px 3px 5px #535353; -webkit-box-shadow: 3px 3px 5px #535353; box-shadow: 3px 3px 5px #535353; } .roundbox { -moz-border-radius: 6px 6px 6px 6px; -webkit-border-radius: 6px; border-radius: 6px 6px 6px 6px; } And the Problem is… collapsed Table Borders Now normally these two styles work just fine in IE 9 when applied to elements. But the box-shadow doesn't work inside of this markup - because the parent container is a table cell.<td class="sidebar" style="border-collapse: collapse"> … <a href="download.asp" style="display:block;margin: 10px;"><img src="../images/download.gif" class="boxshadow roundbox" /></a> …</td> This HTML causes the image to not show a shadow. In actuality I'm not styling inline, but as part of my browser Reset I have the following in my master .css file:table { border-collapse: collapse; border-spacing: 0; } which has the same effect as the inline style. border-collapse by default inherits from the parent and so the TD inherits from table and tr - so TD tags are effectively collapsed. You can check out a test document that demonstrates this behavior here in this CodePaste.net snippet or run it here. How to work around this Issue To get IE9 to render the shadows inside of the TD tag correctly, I can just change the style explicitly NOT to use border-collapse:<td class="sidebar" style="border-collapse: separate; border-width: 0;"> Or better yet (thanks to David's comment below), you can add the border-collapse: separate to the .boxshadow style like this:.boxshadow { -moz-box-shadow: 3px 3px 5px #535353; -webkit-box-shadow: 3px 3px 5px #535353; box-shadow: 3px 3px 5px #535353; border-collapse: separate; } With either of these approaches IE renders the shadows correctly. Do you really need border-collapse? Should you bother with border-collapse? I think so! Collapsed borders render flat as a single fat line if a border-width and border-color are assigned, while separated borders render a thin line with a bunch of weird white space around it or worse render a old skool 3D raised border which is terribly ugly as well. So as a matter of course in any app my browser Reset includes the above code to make sure all tables with borders render the same flat borders. As you probably know, IE has all sorts of rendering issues in tables and on backgrounds (opacity backgrounds or image backgrounds) most of which is caused by the way that IE internally uses ActiveX filters to apply these effects. Apparently collapsed borders are yet one more item that causes problems with rendering. There you have it. Another crappy failure in IE we have to check for now, just one more reason to hate Internet Explorer. Luckily this one has a reasonably easy workaround. I hope this helps out somebody and saves them the hour I spent trying to figure out what caused this problem in the first place. • DSL connection can't connect once disconnected

  I have setup a DSL PPPoE connection, over my cable modem, connected to my laptop via ethernet. I have saved the user name and password and set it to connect automatically. This works well when ubuntu starts and i am connected to internet. But if i try to disconnect and then reconnect, the connection wont be established. I have to restart or log out and log in, in order for ubuntu to establish the DSL connection. Any idea why this is happening? I am on ubuntu 11.10 64 bit.

• How likely are IE9 jumplists to be useful?

  Having installed the Internet Explorer 9 release, I've experimented with the jumplists feature available in Windows 7 - drag a site tab down to the taskbar to create a jumplist. Works for Facebook and Twitter, anyway. I have my suspicions about the utility of this feature - it's a neat and possibly useful feature, yet is limited to the combination of IE9 and Windows 7, plus sites implementing the appropriate code. Given the relatively small audience at this point, is there any value in adding code to support this feature? And would it likely be more useful for a web application (e.g. Twitter, Facebook) than a typical website?

• Problem in Loading certain Websites in Ubuntu 11.10

  I have a DSL connection in Ubuntu 11.04 and am having problems loading content from certain websites mostly providing CDN services. I have tried every suggestion asked at problem loading internet pages as I have the same problem. Also tried to remove the DNS Cache and Browser Cache. I have tried using Google DNS Server: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, but nothing seems to work. Though when I browse the websites in Windows XP then it does not pose any problem. This problem has come up only few days ago and has affected every browser(Chrome, Firefox and Opera) in Ubuntu 11.04. Thanks in advance.

• Ethernet on an Acer Aspire One D255E not working

  Ok very frustrated here, but hopefully can find an answer here. I have an Acer Aspire One netbook D255E. I installed 10.04 desktop edition via live USB, only to find out ethernet is not connecting. The thing is, I had installed previously 10.04 thru wubi as 30GB, but wanted more so did this install. With the Wubi install it worked great internet worked added LibO, mint menu ect. So I know it could work, and it works on Win 7(what little GB is left). I have ethernet enabled, and gave myself all permissions, but still not working. Thank you for any help, and if you do more details in the steps i need to take the better :).

  I am using Ubuntu for 1st time and i do have an modem MTS Mblaze in India which i am using in Windows. But when i tried to connect in Ubuntu 12.10 using give default method i.e. choose country, modem type, connection, add details and then connect. But its not working. Then i came over another solution at http://www.e-dirts.com/2012/how-to-setup-mts-mblaze-usb-modem-in-ubuntu-gnulinux/ But no installation of CrossPlatformUI-V2.1.2-SSTL-ALL-ubuntu.deb happens at all. Is it because i'm using 12.10 version while its tested using 12.04 version. And does that another 'Advanced user method' can be followed without internet? Please suggest. Help

• Problem downloading .exe file from Amazon S3 with a signed URL in IE

  I have a large collection of Windows exe files which are being stored/distributed using Amazon S3. We use signed URLs to control access to the files and this works great except in one case when trying to download a .exe file using Internet Explorer (version 8). It works just fine in Firefox. It also works fine if you don't use a signed URL (but that is not an option). What happens is that the IE downloader changes the name from 'myfile.exe' to 'myfile[1]' and Windows no longer recognizes it as an executable. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

• Wireless Connection Troubles

  I just recently switched from Windows 7 over to Ubuntu 12.04 and have been experiencing some issues connecting to my home's wireless network. The only way I can get it to connect to the network is by disabling IPv4 and IPv6 settings. Even then while it says its connected to the network (3 bars), I'm unable to access the Internet. It connected for a little while after I first installed Ubuntu, but after the first reboot I haven't been able to access the web at all. I have very basic knowledge when it comes to computers and barely any when dealing with Ubuntu and Linux. I'm very happy with Ubuntu apart from this one issue, as before my computer was overheating and crashing, I've yet to experience any of those problems since installing Ubuntu. The information I can give may be very limited since I'm having to use my cell phone to figure out the solution to this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

• Why do I have to reconnect my usb router cable?

  I have a Iball Baton ADSD2+ Router. It's working fine but the problem is when I boot into Ubuntu I have to unplug the usb cable and then plug it again, then it starts working. Why do I have to re connect my usb cable? Let me know if you need more details. Edit : I am using a direct connection. I mean to say I don't have to enter a username or password. I am connected to internet as soon as I start my router. The problem is if I start my router before my computer I have to re connect my usb cable. Thanks.

  As many know, if you serve a page over https and the content loads resources (images, stylesheets, js, SWF objects, etc) over http, older versions of Internet Explorer will show the user a warning saying "This page contains both secure and non-secure items". This is discomforting to many non-technical users. Usually, I can look at the HTML source and identify which item(s) are triggering this error. Sometimes a Flash object will load something else or some embedded javascript will put a new object in the DOM and trigger this. What tools are good for quickly tracking down the source of the warning?

• Page not found in browsers

  I'm using ubuntu 12.04.1, last upgraded from 12.04 I'm using mts mblaze to access internet. Two days ago, I was using vpn on my system, suddenly cisco disconnected & my system hung while I was accessing my office system. I didnt' have any other idea, so I forcibly shut down the system. After that, connection is made, but firefox or chromium both don't find any page. I think there's some problem with the system package. Please let me know a good solution. Regards, Chetan
