I have a file that I am trying to read by using tail -f. I was wondering if there was a way to have the terminal output an actual line break instead of the \n character.
I am working on a large SharePoint farm, mainly with the backend SQL Servers. We have always used stsadm -o for all stsadm functions, but no one seems to know why. I can't seem to find the info specific for stsadm, would it be general Windows command-line sytax?
I've been unable to do a fresh install of XBMC Live 9.11 to my hard drive. Everytime it fails at the Install System step. But I am able to get XBMC Live 9.04.1 to install successfully.
How do I upgrade XBMC Live 9.04.1 to 9.11?
I understand that Ctrl+Shift+F2 brings up the command line, but what are the next set of commands to run?
Is there a way, in bash command line, to give focus to a specific window of a running process. Assume I know the process' name, number, and anything else I need.
For instance, if I have a single instance of Firefox running, but it's minimized (or there's some other window on top of it). I need a bash command that brings up and gives focus to the Firefox window, by making it the active window.
Thanks
I use PuTTY to connect to an Ubuntu Server. I would like to use Tab-Completion when I'm working with the command line. How can I configure so that Tab-Completion works in PuTTY?
I type echo $PATH on the command line and get
/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Users/andrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/local/pear/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin
I'm wondering where this is getting set since my .bash_login file is empty.
I'm particularly concerned that, after installing MacPorts, it installed a bunch of junk in /opt. I don't think that directory even exists in a normal Mac OS X install.
Update: Thanks to jtimberman for correcting my echo $PATH statement
Is there a way to prevent Windows from going into sleep mode while running a program on the command line or with cygwin? Ideally, I'm hoping for something that could be used like:
nosleep myscript.sh
Background
Sometimes I start up long-running jobs like a manual backup or large file transfers and I've found that Windows often goes to sleep before these finish. I'd like to be able to start up the command and prevent sleep mode while the command is running, but have it automatically work again once the command has completed.
I have a large amount of jpeg thumbnail images ranging in size from 120x90 to 320x240 and I would like to classify them as either Real Life-like or Cartoon-like.
Are there any applications that will have cartoon classification capabilities?
This application should work on Linux, and should take an image path on the command-line
and return either 0 or 1 (echo $?).
OSQL -S 127.0.0.1 -U sa -P password

I'm running some lengthy video encodes using the Handbrake command line interface. After all my encodes are done, I would like to have the PC speaker beep, as I usually turn my large external speakers off.
On Linux I would install the "beep" package, but so far I haven't found such a program for Windows 7.
Possibly related links:

What’s up with the
Beep driver in Windows 7?
I can get a list of files from a text file from a specific directory, but they are naturally in singles. I need to create a text file that will give the contents, but all in 1 line separated by a space. My batch is here:
dir /a /b /-p /o:gen %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\file_list_full.txt
As an example, this will give:
Hello.exe
Help.txt
Big.png
sound.ogg
I need it to be:
Hello.exe Help.txt Big.png sound.ogg
How can I do this?
I'm trying to get Sublime Text 2's command line alias working.
The instructions make perfect sense: Run
ln -s "/Applications/Sublime Text 2.app/Contents/SharedSupport/bin/subl" ~/bin/subl
So, in ~/bin, subl exists. However, even when I restart terminal, the command 'subl' is not found. The path specified to the application's subl file is correct, I've verified that. Logging out does not fix it.
Any help would be awesome!
Can I find out which other machines (their IPs) are on my network via Ubuntu command line? What I currently do is install Wireshark and monitor the traffic. Was just hoping there was a simpler way of doing this.
I have a text (.txt) file located somewhere on my PC that contains a bunch of data, including the following string:
Secret Username: *********
Secret Password: *********
How can I find this file from command-line, using Findstr?
I don't know if it's on C: drive or D: drive.
I tried various Findstr queries, such as:
findstr /s /m /n /i Secret Username C:
findstr /s /m /n /i Secret Username D:
findstr /s /m /n /i /c:"Secret Username"
findstr /s /m /n /r /i .*Secret Username.*
but couldn't find the file.
I am looking for a command line mailers which support SSL and authentification, so far I tried 'blat' but it doesn't support SSL.

GNU ps supports BSD-style options, UNIX-style options, and GNU long options. Is using one of these types (in scripts and at the command line) preferred over the others?
I get the impression from the manpage that the functionality of the option styles does not overlap completely.
One commandline tool per answer :)
WalkOnLAN
This small command line utility makes
possible to switch on a computer from
a second one by sending a "Magic
Packet". Both of computers can be
located on the same LAN or on the
different LAN segments.
Anything else?
I have the IP addresses of some computers on my network. Is there any command line tool like PsExec, which can take the IP Address as input and find out the username of the currently logged in user? I can install stuff on my workstation, but not the others. I can also run Metasploit / NMap / any other such program on my workstation.

I need to organise an external HDD such that there is no more than 500 folders on it.
Ubuntu's "Properties" pane shows only the file count, not the folder count.
Is there a simple CLI line that will tell me the number of subdirectories?
Thanks!
Hi,
I am trying to set up command-line access for my windows machine to a svn respository on a Unix box. The guides online all have the keypair method of accessing the repository. However, I don't personally like storing my keypairs, so I'm trying to figure out how to do this.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Currently, I am only aware of the following command:
C:\>bitsadmin /util /SetIEProxy NetworkService MANUAL_PROXY 1 92.168.0.200:8080 NULL
But, it has the following defects:
It is deprecated
It does not allow to set the credentials.
My question is how can I configure the proxy settings, including the credentials using a more up-to-date tool?
EDIT
I would like to stress that I am looking for a command line utility to do that.
