  I read somewhere that the ultimate boot cd can diagnos computer problems in this case would this program help me get my windows xp back? When I turn on the screen and hit start windows normal or go to safe mode I get a flash of the win xp logo and then it goes to this error page.   I am not sure what the issue may be, but I am getting a weird error in Word 2007 (running on Win7 pro x86). When I click the page setup button (or try and chnage one of the page formatiing button like orientation) the program stops responding and crashes on me. This is really getting annoying. I have a directive that goes something like this: Options MultiViews FollowSymLinks I have a location directive where I have Options +Includes This causes warning errors in my Apache error log: mod_include: Options +Includes (or IncludesNoExec) wasn't set, INCLUDES filter removed These warnings are gone when I add +Includes to my options but I don't want.   So i just recently installed Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on my desktop machine alongside Windows 7, it booted just fine the first few times but after i went into my windows 7 recovery software provided by packard bell( i did this on accident BTW i exited it straight away and made no changes as far as i know) and re-booted i get this screen: error: no such partition grub rescue_ PS: i installed it on a USB stick using the ISO on the official ubuntu website.

• My neural network gets "stuck" while training. Is this normal?

  I'm training a XOR neural network via back-propagation using stochastic gradient descent. The weights of the neural network are initialized to random values between -0.5 and 0.5. The neural network successfully trains itself around 80% of the time. However sometimes it gets "stuck" while backpropagating. By "stuck", I mean that I start seeing a decreasing rate of error correction.   On my way to the office this morning, every website on our shared VPS started giving the same error (several times, not the typical memory_limit error which is fatal): Warning: Unknown: Unable to allocate memory for pool. in Unknown on line 0 The shared server is a 64-bit OpenVZ container running cPanel. There are only ~6 VPSes on the host-- this is the largest one at only 4GB. The host itself has 24GB RAM. As the below graphs show, the memory usage on the host and VPS are both rather low. CPU Usage/Disk/Host all seem to be normal. RlimitMem was set to 583653034, yet the memory usage is about the same as it usually is. Apache 2.2, PHP 5.2 (mod_php) Restarting Apache has corrected the problem for now. However, I'd like to prevent it from happening again and I'm not sure what was limiting the memory.   Hi, Can i use Atomic in the parrent procedure as well as in the procedure which the mail procedure calls. My procedure compiles perfectly, but sometimes when I execute it. I receive following error: DB2 Database Error: ERROR [58004] [IBM][DB2/NT64] SQL0901N The SQL statement failed because of a non-severe system error. Subsequent SQL statements can be processed. (Reason "Sdir len bad: 1542!=1520+14".) SQLSTATE=58004 However, surprisingly when i commented the "ATOMIC" keyword in the main procedure and ran again it ran perfectly. But when I ran it again after uncommenting it still did not give any errors and ran perfectly. So the error that I recieve is not something that I recive everytime.Could some one please let me know what could be the issue and what needs to be done to resolve this. As on goolgeing I did not find any leads on this. Thanks, Harveer

  I'm working on a domain-specific language (DSL) for non-programmers. Non-programmers make a lot of grammar mistakes: they misspell keywords, they don't close parentheses, they don't terminate blocks, etc. I'm using ANTLR to generate my parser; it provides a nifty mechanism for handling RecognitionExceptions to improve error handling. But I'm finding it pretty hard to develop good error-handling code for my DSL. At this point, I'm considering ways to simplify the language to make it easier for me to provide users with high-quality error messages, but I'm not really sure how to go about this. I think I want to reduce the ambiguity of errors somehow, but I'm not sure how to implement that idea in a grammar. In what ways can I simplify my language to improve parse-error messages for my users? EDIT: Updated to clarify that I'm interested in ways to simplify my language, not just ANTLR error-handling tips in general. (Though, thanks for those!)

  Hi guys I have implemented my MVVM error message as a message dialog that subscribes to error messages via a mediator class, so that other viewmodels can notify it if any errors occur. When an error occurs, I set the visibility attribute in the viewmodel to Visible, to display the error window. This is all bound in the Error window from the viewmodel. However, this window is NOT modal! I need to show it as a dialog and not just set the visibility to true - is there any kind of binding I can do, even if I have to extend the functionality of the window? I'd rather not break MVVM if I can avoid it. Thanks!

• How to get users to read error messages?

  If you program for a nontechnical audience, you find yourself at a high risk that users will not read your carefully worded and enlightening error messages, but just click on the first button available with a shrug of frustration. So, I'm wondering what good practices you can recommend to help users actually read your error message, instead of simply waiving it aside. Ideas I can think of would fall along the lines of: Formatting of course help; maybe a simple, short message, with a "learn more" button that leads to the longer, more detailed error message Have all error messages link to some section of the user guide (somewhat difficult to achieve) Just don't issue error messages, simply refuse to perform the task (a somewhat "Apple" way of handling user input) Edit: the audience I have in mind is a rather broad user base that doesn't use the software too often and is not captive (i.e., not an in-house software or narrow community). A more generic form of this question was asked on slashdot, so you may want to check there for some of the answers.

  I am using ELMAH to log unhandled exceptions in an ASP.NET Webforms application. Logging is working fine. I want to pass the ELMAH error log id to a custom error page that will give the user the ability to email an administrator about the error. I have followed the advice from this answer.   i have a form, and i want to have it be limited at 10 characters minimum. that is no problem, but what i want to do is echo the error at the top of the page, which is being included, so i cant just do: echo '<div class="error">Error</div>'; i want to have a designated div that is empty (will be on the included header page), but when there is an error it gets filled with the error text to output. anyone know how to do this not using sessions or cookies?

  Iam parsing a page and im getting response from that but after some time i.e. after some of the parsing gets done i get this error from the server - Proxy Error The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request GET /file.php. Reason: Error reading from remote server and after this my parsing fails. I even tried sleep() function but it didnt helped and the error still came. Are they temporarily blocking my ip or what??   Looking for suggestions/best practices on managing error codes and messages in a multi-tiered applications. Specifically things like: Where should error codes be defined? Enum? Class? How are error messages or further details associated with the error codes? resource files? attributes on enum values, etc.? If you have a multi-tier application consisting of DAL, BLL, UI, and Common projects for example, should there be a single giant list of codes for all tiers, or are the codes extensible by project/tier? Update: Important to mention that I can't rely solely on Exceptions and custom Exception types for error reporting, as some clients for this application will be via web services (SOAP & REST) Any suggestions welcome!

• NSCFType keeps occurring, something is not being released?

  I'm attempting to delete files from the documents directory using a tableview/array combination. For some reason, my NSString pointing to the Documents directory path is being converted to a NSCFType (which after some research, I understand is happening because a variable is not being released). Because of this, the application crashes at the line NSString *lastPath = [documentsDirectory stringByAppendingPathComponent:temp]; claiming that NSCFType cannot recognize the method stringByAppendingPathComponent. • How do I know if my PHP application is using too much memory?

  I'm working on a PHP web application that let's users network with each other, book events, message etc... I launched it a few months ago and at the moment, there's only about 100 users. I set up the application on a VPS with ubuntu 9.10, apache 2, mysql 5 and php 5. I had 360 Mb of RAM, but upgraded to 720 MB a few minutes ago. Lately, my web application has been experiencing outages due to excessive memory usage. From what I can tell in error logs, it seems the server automatically kills apache processes that consume too much memory. As a result, I upgraded memory from 360 MB to 720 MB as a stop-gap measure. So my question is, how do I go about resolving these outage issues? How do I know if my website's need for more memory is due to poor code or if it's part of the website's natural growth? What's the most efficient way to determine which PHP scripts consume the most memory?
