  • Microsft Targets Graymail and New Patch Tuesday

    The first critical bulletin will patch a vulnerability contained within Windows and Internet Explorer. Microsoft said that if the vulnerability was exploited, it would give hackers an avenue to spread malicious code on a remote basis. The bug affects the Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 operating systems, plus Internet Explorer versions 6, 7, and 8. Where people were looking for a specific command or set of steps to fix a problem they had encountered. So we thought it would be a good idea to create a series of small posts that deal with these "How do I" question directly. We will use a simple example each time, that shows exactly what commands and procedures should be used to address a given problem.   • Rails: creating a model in the new action

    I have an interesting situation, well it's probably not that unique at all, but I'm not totally sure how to tackle it. I have a model, in this case a recipe and the user navigates to the new path /recipes/new however the situation is that I need to be able to have the user upload images and make associations to that model in the new action, but the model doesn't have an ID yet. So I assume I need to rethink my controller, but I don't want to have redirects and whatnot, how can accomplish this? Here is the basic controller, barebones obviously: ... def new # I should be creating the model first, so it has an ID @recipe = Recipe.new end def create @recipe = Recipe.new(params[:recipe]) if @recipe.save redirect_to @recipe else render 'new' end end ... update Perhaps I can have a column thats like state which could have values like new/incomplete/complete or what-have-you. I'm mostly trying to figure out what would also be most efficient for the DB. It would be nice if I could still have a url that said '/new', instead of it be the edit path with the id, for usability sake, but I'm not sure this can be simply accomplished in the new action of my controller. Thoughts?

  • Connect to wifi ubuntu 14.04 (new ubuntu user)

    I have recently changed my operating system from windows 8 to ubuntu 14.04, when trying to connect to the network via wifi the system just keeps asking for my password over and over without connecting. The connectivity through an Ethernet cable is perfectly fine however and my wifi worked fine through windows 8, I have very little ubuntu knowledge so i apologise if the right information is not shown in this question. Just wondering if there was any known problems or if anyone has seen this before? Thanks in advance for any help, Tom

  • Context switches much slower in new linux kernels

    We are looking to upgrade the OS on our servers from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Unfortunately, it seems that the latency to run a thread that has become runnable has significantly increased from the 2.6 kernel to the 3.2 kernel. In fact the latency numbers we are getting are hard to believe. Let me be more specific about the test. We have a program that has two threads. The first thread gets the current time (in ticks using RDTSC) and then signals a condition variable once a second. The second thread waits on the condition variable and wakes up when it is signaled. It then gets the current time (in ticks using RDTSC). The difference between the time in the second thread and the time in the first thread is computed and displayed on the console. After this the second thread waits on the condition variable once more. So, we get a thread to thread signaling latency measurement once a second as a result. In linux 2.6.32, this latency is somewhere on the order of 2.8-3.5 us, which is reasonable. In linux 3.2.0, this latency is somewhere on the order of 40-100 us. I have excluded any differences in hardware between the two host hosts. They run on identical hardware (dual socket X5687 {Westmere-EP} processors running at 3.6 GHz with hyperthreading, speedstep and all C states turned off). We are changing the affinity to run both threads on physical cores of the same socket (i.e., the first thread is run on Core 0 and the second thread is run on Core 1), so there is no bouncing of threads on cores or bouncing/communication between sockets. The only difference between the two hosts is that one is running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with kernel 2.6.32-28 (the fast context switch box) and the other is running the latest Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with kernel 3.2.0-23 (the slow context switch box). Have there been any changes in the kernel that could account for this ridiculous slow down in how long it takes for a thread to be scheduled to run?

    I've recently moved from server with php4 to php5. Now I cant open content in my page. Links look like this "page.com/news-it-is-rainy-day-1.html". But when I try to open link I just get the archive (news.html). I also use smarty template engine. Domain A was the one I had purchased when I first set up my website, but I didn't like it all that much and it was getting low ranks, and so I bought domain B and 301'd links from domain A to domain B. Now I would like to know if there is any way I can filter page views on Google Analytics based on the domain used to access the website, so that I can know if it is worth to keep the old domain associated with the account.   • New to Maven-- Creating Java EE Projects

    Greetings-- I've been developing Java EE web apps with Eclipse for about a year. My employer doesn't use Maven, but the more I read about it, the more convinced I am that Maven + Hudson will be greatly beneficial for us. First, though, I have to become comfortable with those technologies in my spare time, so that I can create a proof-of-concept. Right now, I'm still a Maven newbie. Is there a set of best practices for creating Java EE web apps with Maven? For example, I could create a project with a basic archetype and then add all of the necessary JARs by putting dependencies in the POM for the servlet container, EJB, EclipseLink, etc... That might work, but it might not be the best way to do it. I'd greatly appreciate any guidance that you could provide on this topic. Thank you very much!
