  • Mac-like alt-tab replacement for Windows 7?

    Is there an alt-tab replacement for windows that works in the same manner as command-tab and command-tick on OS X? example of what I'd like to do: If I hit alt-tab, I'd like to switch between open applications, rather than all windows currently open. If I hit alt-tick, I'd like to switch between open windows of the same application. VistaSwitcher is almost there, in that it allows you to alt-tick switch between windows of the same app. So if I have 4 firefox windows open and one of them is my active window, I can alt-tick to switch between those 4 while ignoring any other open apps. However, VistaSwitcher's alt-tab functionality is similar to stock Windows alt-tab, where you cycle through all open windows, regardless of whether there are multiple instances of certain applications.

  • iMac goes black, makes clicking sound... thoughts?

    This is the second time this has happened. The display on my Apple iMac (20-inch Late 2006) just went black, system was completely unresponsive to mouse/keyboard input, I could not SSH into nor ping the machine, and it didn't show up in ARD. I could hear a fairly loud clicking noise from inside which sounded like the DVD drive trying to seek -- but there is no disc in the drive. It could possibly be the hard drive... I pressed the power button and the system powered off, and now will not power on again. Thoughts / suggestions as to next course of action?

  • How to recover unsaved PSD file on MacOSX

    Adobe Photoshop creates temporary *.psb files for emergency recovery at this path: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS6/AutoRecover The files created have names like _Untitled-10FDB62ECBABBFF5C8EAD958EBC9CFAE2E.psb with current user:group as designated owner. If you save the file you are working on OR you hit "don't save" when prompted, the temporary files are deleted. Now, system creates and deletes these files. I am trying to recover the emergency file but I think the "undelete" utilities were created assuming the "user" deletes the file - like going into the trash bin and then emptying the trash... Anyone having experience about this? Thanks.

    Hi, I hope someone can help me. I have a 3 yr old MacBook Pro and lately I've been getting an error msg when I try to download something to my machine, This is what it says: Download error /Users/scarletriley/Downloads/the name of document goes here- no spaces of course! could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred.   • Running Mac OS X 10.6 my users home directory is wrong

    Somehow my home directory on my Mac has been changed and I'm not sure how to go about changing it back, I'm more of a linux guy and Mac OS X has some other mechanism for storing that information. Basically when I log into the machine normally than start a terminal window. I start in the /Users/erik_miller directory, which is my home directory, but when I run some this like cd ~ The machine tries to change to /Users/erik_miller. Yes, the same path with a period on the end. I can change my $HOME environment variable for the session, but the next time I start the machine it reverts. So, I think if I can find where that information is stored I can just change it there and hopefully all will be well.

  • Blur a moving area in a movie on Mac OS X

    Note, there's already a question on this regard, but it's totally useless. I need to blur, or put a small opaque mask to a moving object on a movie I took, I am using Mac OS X. Clearly, I don't want to shell out a lot of money for something so simple, so getting Adobe Premiere or similar software is a no go. I could however consider paying a small software (max 30 dollars) for this specific task.

  • MacBook (late 2008) EFI Firmware Update 1.8 Problem

    Last night I applied EFI Firmware update 1.8 to my Macbook (late 2008). After installing EFI Firmware Update and rebooted my computer and installed SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0. After that my Macbook rebooted and a black screen is showing with "No bootable device. Please insert bootable device and press any key to continue". I put in one of the bootable installation disck (MAC OS) and it's still stuck on the same screen. I have also tried restarting my macbook manually but no luck. Have anyone experienced that?

  • Why is Safari on my computer rendering all of the colors -- not just for images -- incorrectly?

    I’m not just talking about image color profile issues; every single color that the browser renders is incorrect. It’s like it’s in it’s own color space (or something!). Screenshot: http://drp.ly/DJk1O (Opera, Safari, Chrome, Firefox) Spot the odd one out? Open this up in Photoshop or similar and try using the eyedropper to select the colour. Safari renders the same hex color completely differently. That color is set using a background-color declaration in CSS, so it should be identical in all four of those browsers.   • Mac and windows 7 file sharing specific user

    Hi guys, I try to share a specific directory to my windows 7 computer, but I want it to use a specific user that I created on my mac to connect to it. I saw this tutorial: http://www.trickyways.com/2010/06/how-to-access-mac-files-from-windows-7/ wich is exactly what I want to do, but it ain't working. For some reason, it never prompts me for username/password when I try to connect on my mac when I'm on Windows 7. On top of that, when I set the permission "No Access" to the "Everyone" user on my mac, my windows computer simply don't see the directory. If I set the permission to "Read/Write" or "Read only" it works. I simply don't want that everyone in my workgroup to be able to read my files. I want to create specific users on my mac and share them to the persons I want... Any thoughts?

    I have a QNAP NAS that offers a few SMB shares. As I'm in a trusted environment, my shares are accessible as guest rather than with a combination of username and password. Problem Now, when I click the name of the device in Finder's sidebar, I get the black "Connection failed" bar, with the option "Connect as...". When I click that, I receive: I can however press ? + K and enter the server's name manually, which gets me to this window: Here, I have to select "guest". Now, I can select one of the shares to connect to, and I'm finally connected to the server. If I select it in the sidebar, I get a list of all shares available, because I'm connected as "guest", obviously: What I need Well, as soon as I unmount all shares, I have to go through the same procedure of manually logging in as "guest" again, which I find quite annoying. Is there any way I could get Finder (or the underlying SMB client) to know which credentials to use? Or should I look for the solution rather on the server side? (I know that other SMB shares seem to work fine in my network) Diagnostics The only thing I can get out of Console.app is: 5/15/11 7:36:40 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[200] SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 64 This message occurs when I click the name of the SMB server in the Finder sidebar.   • Microsoft Arc Mouse OS X

    I recently bought a new Mac Book Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8 on it. The only portable mouse I have is my Microsoft Arc Mouse. I wanted to use it with the laptop so I installed the IntelliPoint 8.2 for Mac from Microsofts website. According to their website, this driver is for OS X 10.4-10.7. Now I thought that wouldnt be too much of an issue but unfortunately for me, the driver installs fine and the mouse is detected but I get no movement and when I click the buttons nothing happens. I took the mouse with me on a business trip to EU and before I left I checked if the mouse worked with my desktop which is running Windows 7 and it worked without any hiccups. I'm not too sure where the OS differs from 10.7 to 10.8. I found an article online but it doesn't pertain to my mouse, although it could be of assistance.   • How can I send an email from Mail.app to Outlook with an attachment that does not embed into the email body?

    I'm using Mail.app (on Mac OS X 10.6) and when I send an email to users on PC Outlook, with an attached image, they get the email as an image embedded into the body, not as an attachement. I even tried clicking "view as icon" before sending the attachment from Macmail, but that made no difference. I also tried this myself, sending from Mail.app over to my PC's Outlook, and I do get that same problem. In Outlook the image is not coming through as an attachment, but as an image embedded into the body of the email. The reason this is an issue primarily is because the user is then unable to click "save as" and has to actually copy and paste it into some other program, which means the file is converted from jpg or png to the bmp format. But beyond that, most of my recipients don't even know how to copy and paste it into another program to save it that way anyway. They need the "save attachment as" functionality.

    Can anyone tell me what the main differences between i.e. MBR vs GPT or any other partition scheme are? Why would one choose one over the other? I am not an expert but from new release of Mac OS X which includes a feature called Time Machine, which I find highly useful. GPT is the requirement for Mac OS X Lion ... so on this basis I would say that GPT is more useful than MBR. What other partition schemes are there and which one should be used in which situation?

  • Why is Automator crashing on launch?

    I've run into an odd problem where Automtor.app on Snow Leopard crashes on launch. At some point in the past, I put a copy of iPhoto.app into my public directory to copy over to another machine. Now, Automator.app won't run unless my public directory has a copy of iPhoto.app in it. If I remove it, Automator.app crashes on launch.
