• Another question about ASP.NET MVC and a separate project for helper classes

  I know this topic has been discussed to death, but there is one thing that I can't wrap my head around. I'm working on a Web Application using ASP.NET MVC and I come across a scenario where I need a helper class (this usually happens in the early stages of development. So I go ahead and create a helper project in my solution that I use to manage all of my Helper Classes. Now, do I have to build that project and dump the dll in the bin directory every time I make changes to is, or is there a way to have the main web application reference the classes contained within the separate project without the separate build process? I'm just looking for the easiest way to add helper classes without the hastel of building and moving the dll every time I make a change or addition. Also, sorry for the very newbie-esque question here. All of the web apps I've build in the past have all been in the same project (web forms, App_Code, etc).

• Color space - RGB and YCbCr question

  Hello! I am now trying to understand how JPEG encoding works and everything seems fine except the color transformation part. Before attempting to do a DCT in JPEG algorithm, the image is transformed into YCbCr color space. To me this essentially means that we just (comparing to initial RGB image) take a chunk of color information and dispose it while applying the RGB -> YCbCr transformation. So, our encoding steps look generally like RGB -> YCbCr -> DCT -> Huffman. The decoding means inversing this process. And my question is - why does the image (for example, created and exported to JPEG) remain the same in terms of color, although we have to make inverse YCbCr -> RGB transform. Where does the disposed part of color information comes from or how is it handled?

• Ridiculously Simple Erlang Question

  Read (skimmed enough to get coding) through Erlang Programming and Programming Erlang. One question, which is as simple as it sounds: If you have a process Pid1 on machine m1 and a billion million messages are sent to Pid1, are messages handled in parallel by that process (I get the impression no) and is there any guarantee of order when processing messages? ie. Received in order sent? Coming from the whole C/Thread pools/Shared State background ... I want to get this concrete. I understand distributing an application, but want to ensure the 'raw bones' are what I expect before building processes and distributing workload. Also, am I right in thinking the whole world is currently flicking through Erlang texts ;)

  I am writing a trigger to audit updates and deletes in tables. I am using SQL Server 2008 My questions are, Is there a way to find out what action is being taken on a record without going through the selection phase of the deleted and inserted tables? Another question is, if the record is being deleted, how do I record within the audit table the user that is performing the delete. (NOTE: the user connected to the database is a general connection string with a set user, I need the user who is logged into either a web app or a windows app) Please help?

  I am now reading Foundations of F# by Robert Pickering and parallelly the book in progress 'Real World Functional Programming' by Tomas Petricek. My question is, what is the added value I would get from buying and reading the following books: 1) Expert F# by Don Syme and others 2) F# for Scientists by John Harrop Are those books still up to date with the current CTP version. What are things to keep notice of with respect to the recent changes in the language? Will there be reprinted updated versions? Also I want to learn more about datamining techniques with F# as a tool for this. What are good books to read next on this topic?

  i want to make my threads content searchable with full text search engines like solr. but i wonder one thing. should i index just the thread.title, thread.body and post.body or should i index username, created date, nr of posts, views, country, region and city too that belongs to thread? i mean when an user search for a thread he will get hits returned containing thread title, 2 lines of body, which user has posted it, creation date, tags, and so on. should i index all this information too? but then it would be pretty much the whole database. or should i just index the 3 first columns i mentioned for full text search. and another question. when an user post a new thread, then i have to immidiately tell solr to add that row? if im not, how would it be searchable?

• Rails Multiple Table Inheritance question

  I am starting to implement an MTI solution and have a basic question. I have 3 physical models - SMSNotifications, EmailNotifications, TwitterNotifications and they are subclasses of notification. At times in my code, I want to say Notifications.find(:all)so that I can get a set of results sorted by their creation time. Then I want to do things based on their subclass. What is the way to write Notifications.find(:all) and have Rails look through the subclass tables and combine the results? Right now Rails still thinks I have a physical Notifications table which goes against my MTI design. I am also considering the possibility that I should be using STI instead. I would probably have 10 empty columns per row but if getting all notifications requires a query for each type of notification, then I feel like this could be a big issue. Thanks!

  Hi, I'm new to android but I've been working my way through the tutoials. Still trying to get my head round layouts in a non-html world and was wondering how to achieve the following.... 1) I'd like to set a tiled background to fill the screen behind the whole activity 2) I'd like to place a graphic and a button underneath it centred in the middle of the screen. 3) When the user clicks the button I'd like to start a new activity and presumably I have to do something to the current activity so the user can use the back button to get back to it.   I have written a program for a stack. My question is there any other way except for a StringBuilder for such kind of problem? Also in what other kind of cases does this kind of problem happen? • Question about mysql indexes on low to medium cardinality columns

  I have a general question about the way that database indexing works, particularly in mysql. Let's say I have a table with a million rows with a column "ClientID" that is distributed relatively equally among 30 values. Thus, this column is very low cardinality (30) relative to the primary key (1 million). Now, I understand that you shouldn't create indexes on low cardinality fields. However, in this case, queries are only ever done with one of the 30 clientIDs. Thus, wouldn't creating an index on ClientID be helpful, as the search space is automatically reduced to 1/30th what it normally would be? Or is my understanding of how the index works flawed?   Hi, I am designing a database for a project. I have a table that has 10 columns, most of them are used whenever the table is accessed, and I need to add 3 more rows; View Count Thumbs Up (count) Thumbs Down (Count) which will be used on %90 of the queries when the table is accessed. So, my question is that whether it is better to break the table up and create new table which will have these 3 columns + Foreign ID, or just make it 13 columns and use no joins? Since these columns will be used frequently, I guess adding 3 more columns is better, but if I need to create 10 more columns which will be used %90 of the time, should I add them as well, or create a new table and use joins? I am not sure when to break the table if the columns are used very frequently. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance,

  so when casting like in the statement below :- int randomNumber=(int) (Math.random()*5) it causes the random no. generated to get converted into an int.. Also there's this method I just came across Integer.parseInt() which does the same ! i.e return an integer Why two different ways to make a value an int ? Also I made a search and it says parseInt() takes string as an argument.. So does this mean that parseInt() is ONLY to convert String into integer ? What about this casting then (int) ?? Can we use this to convert a string to an int too ? sorry if it sounds like a dumb question..I am just confused and trying to understand Help ?

  My PHP and programming knowledge is extremely basic, so this is probably a dumb question: I am theming a View in Drupal 6, and I want to add an id with a consecutive number to each item in the view (first item would have the id #item1, the second #item2, etc). I am customizing the style output (views-view-unformatted--MYVIEWNAME.tpl.php) and the row style output (views-view-fields--MYVIEWNAME.tpl.php), and I want to add a counter variable in the foreach loop in the style output tpl, and then use that variable in the row style output tpl, but the last one is not recognizing the variable. It does not give me any errors, but doesnt print the number. I understand this has probably something to do with variables visibility, how can I declare the counter variable in the style .tpl so I can the use it in the row style .tpl? Thank you

  All, I have a PHP website written in Zend Framework and MVC. Most of the controller actions check if the request is an Ajax request or not, else they redirect the user to home page. I am thinking about various ways to break that site. I am considering the following scenario: A user creates his own PHP project on his Local machine. User writes a JQuery ajax post request to one of the controllers on my site and tries to post malicious info. Ex: $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: "https://marketsite/getinfo/getstuff", cache: false, dataType: "html", success: function(html_response){ alert(html_response); }, error: function(xhr,ajaxOptions,errorThrown){ alert(errorThrown); } }); My Question is does "url" attribute in the ajax request above take absolute path? I know it takes relative path. Also, is it possible to break any site by sending such requests? Thanks

  I am programming an instant messaging library for MSN Messenger, and I have a simple question about raising events. When logging in, should I be raising UserAdded for each user that is synchronized (already on the contact list), or should the UserAdded event be reserved for when a new user has been added to the contact list via the AddUser method? The repository is injected into this by DI. However I'm passing in via DI a different repository type for each controller (even though they all inherrit from the base repository). How can the base controller somehow access the repository that is passed in (regardless of what type it is), so that it can access the common base methods?

  Hi, I'm compiling my program with architecture set to -mtune=i386 However, I'm also linking statically against several libs (libpng, zlib, jpeglib, vorbisfile, libogg). I've built these libs on my own using configure and make, so I guess these libs were built with architecture being set to my system's architecture which would be i686. But I don't want that! I want my program to run on i386, too, so I need to make sure that all these libs that I'm statically linking against are built for i386, too. So my question: Is there a convenient way to build libpng/zlib/jpeglib/vorbisfile/libogg etc. for i386 or do I have to modify all of their makefiles manually and make sure that -mtune is set to i386?   Hi, I'm moving to a pure as3 environment into flex and I have a question about preloaders. For one of my apps in particular when the swf loaded I would add a screen with an animated preloader. Then at a particular point in my code when I know all of my xml has been parsed, UI built and all initiliztion done I dispatch a "done" event which removes the preloader. How can I achieve this is flex? I've only ever really seen flex preloaders that are percentage based which I believe represent the actual loading of the swf itself?
