  Hi, I'm moving to a pure as3 environment into flex and I have a question about preloaders. For one of my apps in particular when the swf loaded I would add a screen with an animated preloader. Then at a particular point in my code when I know all of my xml has been parsed, UI built and all initiliztion done I dispatch a "done" event which removes the preloader. How can I achieve this is flex? I've only ever really seen flex preloaders that are percentage based which I believe represent the actual loading of the swf itself?

• Diamonds with question marks

  Hi, I'm getting these little diamonds with question marks in them in my HTML attributes when I present data from my database. I'm using EPiServer and a few custom properties. This is the information I've gathered, I save my data as a XML document, since I use custom EPiServer properties which need more than one defined value. This is saved as UTF8. It's only attributes in element tags which have this problem, such as align=left becomes align=?left?. There is no " character there, but I get the diamonds anyway. If I use " outside an element, it works and shows correctly. Any clues?

  There are lots written about the ReaderWriterLockSlim class which allows multiple read and a single write. All of these (at least that I had found) tell how to use it without much explanation why and how it works. The standard code sample is: lock.EnterUpgradeableReadLock(); try { if (test if write is required) { lock.EnterWriteLock(); try { change the resourse here. } finally { lock.ExitWriteLock(); } } } finally { lock.ExitUpgradeableReadLock(); } The question is: if upgradeable lock permits only a single thread to enter its section, why I should call EnterWriteLock method within? What will happen if I don't? Or what will happen if instead of EnterUpgradeableReadLock I will call EnterWriteLock and will write to a resource without using upgradeable lock at all?

• Incrmenting a Cookies with PHP (Beginner Question)

  Hello, I have used sessions before but never cookies. I would like to use cookies for two reasons: 1) it's something new to learn 2) I would like to have the cookie expire in an hour or so (i know in the code example it expires in 40 sec) I am trying to write a basic if statement that if($counter=="1") { //do this second } elseif ($counter >="2") { //do this every time after the first and second } else {// this is the first action as counter is zero } Here is the code I'm using to set the cookie: // if cookie doesnt exsist, set the default if(!isset($_COOKIE["counter_cookie"])) { $counter = setcookie("counter_cookie", 0 ,time()+40); } // increment it $counter++; // save it setcookie("counter_cookie", $counter,time()+40); $counter = $_COOKIE["counter_cookie"]; The problem is that the counter will be set from 0 to 1 but won't be set from 1 to 2 and so on. Any help would be great I know this is a really simple stupid question :| Thanks!

• ClearCase UCM Mainline Configuration Management Pattern Question

  A configuration management pattern question (using Rational ClearCase UCM) When I use the mainline approach I create new releases by: - create release 1 from mainline - on a certain moment baseline release 1, deliver release 1 to mainline - create release 2 from mainline - on a certain moment baseline release 2, deliver release 2 to mainline - create release 3 from mainline - etc... Works very nice because the pathname is /main/release 3/latest instead of /main/release 1/release 2/release 3/latest etc... However... when in release 1 are new elements that have to be propagated to later releases I can not use the mainline since the mainline is already on e.g. release 4. The only thing I can do is deliver/merge from release 1 directly to release 2. The bad thing is that the pathname then becomes /main/release 1/release 2/latest for that files (and possibly later releases). That is I think not in line with the mainline approach. What am I doing wrong?

  Hey there, i bumped the other day into a little problem regarding C#'s properties. Let's say i do have this setup: public class Point { public float X; public float Y; } public class Control { protected Point m_Position = new Point(); public Position { get { return m_Position; } set { m_Position = value; } // reorganize internal structure.. reorganize(); } protected reorganize() { // do some stuff } } This is all fine, but when it comes to usage, i could write something like: Control myControl = new Control(); myControl.Position.X = 1.0f; The thing is, my Control class wont recognize that the Position has been changed because set hasn't been called. So i guess my question is, is there a way to make Control aware of any Position changes? Thanks in advance! Mfg Imp

  In theory I would like to produce 2 projects: 1) Asp.net (Sever A) 2) DAL running (Server B) I would like to utilise command objects to comunicate with the DAL. ASP.net instantiates a command class e.g. CmdGetAllUsers which impliments IMyCommand interface and sends it to the DAL (using ASMX or WCF). My question is: Would the class definition of CmdGetAllUsers need to exist on the DAL server? Or would having the interface definition be enough? My goal is to reduce the need to redeploy the DAL code, and have it as a fairly simple pass-through layer. Many thanks for your time.

  Reading a book I have found the following statement: (Object) Behaviors answer either of two questions: What does this object do (for me)? or What can I do to this object? In the case of an orange, it doesn’t do a whole lot, but we can do things to it. One behavior is that it can be eaten. In my understanding of object behaviour the statement above is correct regarding the first question and is incorrect in case of the second. However, I often see classes with methods like Orange::eat(), and this makes me uncertain about my design skills. So I would like to ask is it a design mistake to give oranges a behaviour eat? (oranges and eat are used just for example)

  I have a client that works with several well established 3rd party sites to sell his product (in this case hotel rooms, but the question is more general). Every time he gets a reservation he has to go to each site and manually make changes. I've done a quick search to see if there are APIs or any developer resources for these sites but have come up with nothing. I've emailed his contacts for each site but have yet to receive a response. I don't have a lot of experience working with third party sites like this but in the past when I've looked for APIs I usually come up empty handed. Are these types of APIs rare or am I just looking in the wrong places? It seems like an obvious thing to have for a company that has an affiliate program. Any suggestions on where to look for APIs or am I at the mercy of my "contact"?

  Hi stackoverflow, I apologize in advance for the possible stupidity of this question. However, the following has been the source of some confusion for me and I know the people here will be able to handily clear up the confusion for me. Basically, I would like to finally understand the relationship between any and all of the following terms. Some of the terms I do actually understand pretty well, but some of them are similar in my mind and I would like to once and for all to see their relationships/distinctions laid out all at once. They are: compiler interpreter bytecode machine code assembler assembly language binary object code executable Ideally, an answer would use examples from Java and C++ and other well-known programming languages that a young-ish student like me would be familiar with.   Sorry for being a total beginner in cocoa and for asking the following stupid question, but it's too confusing for me to google it myself or maybe i'm just missing something. I need to run a shellscript with elevated privileges in cocoa. As i understand, "AuthorizationExecuteWithPrivileges" is the correct way to do it. So i've created an application and tried to use some code from one example i found online. The problem is ... if i understand it correctly ... there should be a Security framework in /System/Library/Frameworks that i have to import to the project, but ... it's not there.   I searched but couldn't find an answer to this seemingly easy question, so... Suppose I have a loop in which I need to set callbacks. My callback function looks like this: function callback(var1) { // code } Now my loop is something like this: for( //condition) { var x = something_different_each_time; document.getElementById('foo').addEventListener('click', function() { callback(x); }, false); } Now it looks like even if the loop runs n times, the anonymous function is compiled only once -- and hence every invocation of callback is called with the same argument (even though x varies in the loop every time). I must be missing something here.. any help is greatly appreciated! :)

  Hi, I am kind of newbie on Objective-C and I was looking at a code, trying to understand a few things, and I come across with this .h file: there was a declaration like that on the @interface section MyVideoClass *contrast_; then below we have @property (nonatomic, retain) MyVideoClass *contrast; @property (nonatomic, retain) FetchClass *fetchMe; The strange part is that the first has an underscrore after the name and the second one, doesn't. The other strange thing is that the guy has a call to these properties like this: FetchClass *fetchOne = [self.fetchMe contrast]; What kind of call is that? This seems pretty insane to me. I simply cannot understand what is going on here, but the code works. pretty insane. Can you guys explain me that? Forgive the stupid question, but I am still learning... thanks

  Assume you have a Collection(ConcurrentLinkedQueue) of Runnables with mutable state. Thread A iterates over the Collection and hands the Runnables to an ExecutorService. The run() method changes the Runnables state. The Runnable has no internal synchronization. The above is a repetitive action and the worker threads need to see the changes made by previous iterations. So a Runnable gets processed by one worker thread after another, but is never accessed by more than one thread at a time - a case of serial thread confinement(i hope ;)). The question: Will it work just with the internal synchronization of the ConcurrentLinkedQueue/ExecutorSerivce? To be more precise: If Thread A hands Runnable R to worker thread B and B changes the state of R, and then A hands R to worker thread C..does C see the modifications done by B?

But if it was a method, why would it begin with a capital letter and has no return data type?   Hi, In Gtk application, there is 1 main loop which listens for events (e.g. mouse click, keyboard, etc). And when a modal dialog popup, the main loop is blocked until user clicks 'OK' in the dialog, right? (i.e. nothing will happen when user clicks on the main window). Is that correct? My question is how can firefox did its modal dialog so that it can: 1. when 1 have 2 Firefox windows 2. one of them has a modal dialog 3. other one is still interactive If both window shares the same gtk main loop, how is that possible? But my question is how exactly can i calculate the AVERAGE of $total price of all given in results? Meaning for example i have 5 rows so this would mean 5 total prices. How exactly can i acces this value and count everything up / 5? This will happen in a other page so i would like to use sessions for this. /5 simply by count($_Session["table"]) , but really not sure about the other values. Kind Regards.
