• Guaranteed Restore Points as Fallback Method

  Thanks to the great audience yesterday in the Upgrade & Migration Workshop in Utrecht. That was really fun and I was amazed by our new facilities (and the  "wellness" lights surrounding the plenum room's walls). And another reason why I like to do these workshops is that often I learn new things from you So credits here to Rick van  Ek who has highlighted the following topic to me. Yesterday (and in some previous workshops) I did mention during the discussion about Fallback Strategies that you'll have to switch on Flashback Database beforehand to create a guaranteed restore point in case you'll encounter an issue during the database upgrade. I knew that we've made it possible since Oracle Database 11.2 to switch Flashback Database on without taking the database into MOUNT status (you could switch it off anyway while the database is open before in all releases). But before Oracle Database 11.2 that did require MOUNT status. SQL> create restore point rp1 guarantee flashback database ; create restore point rp1 guarantee flashback database * ERROR at line 1: ORA-38784: Cannot create restore point 'RP1'. ORA-38787: Creating the first guaranteed restore point requires mount mode when flashback database is off. But Rick did mention that I won't need to switch Flashback Database On to create a guaranteed restore point. And he's right - in older releases I would have had to go into MOUNT state to define the restore point which meant to restart the database. But in 11.2 that's no necessary anymore. And the same will apply when you upgrade your pre-11.2 database (e.g. an Oracle Database 10.2.0.4) to Oracle Database 11.2. As soon as you start your "old" not-yet-upgraded database in your 11.2 environment with STARTUP UPGRADE you can define a guaranteed restore point. If you tail the alert.log you'll see that the database will start the RVWR (Recovery Writer) background process - you'll just have to make sure that you'd define the values for db_recovery_file_dest_size and db_recovery_file_dest. SQL> startup upgrade ORACLE instance started. Total System Global Area  417546240 bytes Fixed Size                  2228944 bytes Variable Size             134221104 bytes Database Buffers          272629760 bytes Redo Buffers                8466432 bytes Database mounted. • Apps UX Launches Blueprints for Mobile User Experiences

These patterns are designed to work directly with Oracle’s Fusion Middleware, specifically, ADF Mobile.  The Oracle Application Development Framework for mobile users enables developers to build one application that can be deployed to multiple mobile device platforms. These same mobile design patterns provide the guidance for Oracle teams to develop Fusion Mobile expenses. Application developers can use Oracle’s mobile design patterns to design iPhone, Android, or browser-based smartphone applications. We are sharing our mobile design patterns and their baked-in, scientifically proven usability to enable Oracle customers and partners to build mobile applications quickly.A different way of thinking and designing. Lynn Rampoldi-Hnilo, Senior Manager of Mobile User Experiences for Apps UX, says mobile design has to be compelling. “It needs to be optimized for the device, and be visually rich and simple,” she said. “What is really key is that you are designing for a user’s most personal device, the device that they will have with them at all times of the day.”Katy Massucco, director of the overall design patterns site, said: “You need to start with a simplified task flow. Everything should be a natural interaction. The action should be relevant and leveraging the device. It should be seamless.”She suggests that developers identify the essential tasks that a user would want to do while mobile. “They need to understand the user and the context,” she added. ?A sample inline action design patternWhat people are sayingReactions to the release of the design patterns have been positive. • [EF + ORACLE] Updating and Deleting Entities

  Prologue In previous chapters we have seen how to insert data through EF, with and without sequences. In this one, we are going to see how to Update and delete Data from the DB. Updating data The update of the Entity Data (properties) is a very common and easy action. Before of change any of the properties of the Entity, we can check the EntityState property, and we can see that is EntityState.Unchanged.   For making an update it is needed to get the Entity which will be modified. In the following example, I use the GetEmployeeByNumber to get a valid Entity: 1: EMPLEADOS emp=GetEmployeeByNumber(2); 2: emp.Name="a"; 3: emp.Phone="2"; 4: emp.Mail="aa"; After modifying the desired properties of the Entity, we are going to check again Entitystate property, which now has the EntityState.Modified value. To persist the changes to the DB is necessary to invoke the SaveChanges function of our context. 1: context.SaveChanges(); After modifying the desired properties of the Entity, we are going to check again Entitystate property, which now has the EntityState.Modified value. To persist the changes to the DB is necessary to invoke the SaveChanges function of our context. If we check again the EntityState property we will see that the value will be EntityState.Unchanged.   Deleting Data Another easy action is to delete an Entity.   The first step to delete an Entity from the DB is to select the entity: 1: CLIENTS selectedClient = GetClientByNumber(15); 2: context.CLIENTES.DeleteObject(clienteSeleccionado); Before invoking the DeleteObject function, we will check EntityStet which value must be EntityState.Unchanged. After deleting the object, the state will be changed to EntitySate.Deleted. To commit the action we have to invoke the SaveChanges function. Aftar that, the EntityState property will be EntityState.Detached. Cascade Entity Framework lets cascade updates and deletes, although I never see cascade updates. What is a cascade delete? A cascade delete is an action that allows to delete all the related object to the object we desire to delete. This option could be established in the DB manager, or it could be in the EF model designer. For example: With a given relation (1-N) between clients and requests. The common situation must be to let delete those clients whose have no requests. If we select the relation between both entities, and press the second mouse button, we can see the properties panel of the relation. The props are: This grid shows the relations indicating the Master table(Clients) and the end point (Cabecera or Requests) The property “End 1 OnDelete” indicates the action to do when a Entity from the Master will be deleted. There are two options: - None: No action will be done, it is said, if a Entity has details entities it could not be deleted. - Cascade: It will delete all related entities to the master Entity. If we enable the cascade delete in a relation, and we invoke the DeleteObject function of the set, we could observe that all the related object indicates a Entitystate.Deleted state. Like an update, insert or common delete, until we commit the changes with SaveChanges function, the data would not be commited.   I needed to build a dynamic filter and I wanted to keep using entities. Because of this reason I wanted to use the PredicateBuilder from albahari.   Looking at the Reactive Extensions for javascript demo on Jeff Van Gogh's blog, I thought I'd give it a try in C#/Winforms, but it doesn't seem to work so well.   I'd like to accept JSON on an REST endpoint and convert it to the correct type for immediate validation. The endpoint looks like this: @POST public Response createCar(@Valid Car car) { // persist to DB // ... } But there are many subclasses of Car, e.g. Van, SelfDrivingCar, RaceCar, etc. How could I accept the different JSON representations on the endpoint, while keeping the validation code in the Resource as concise as something like @Valid Car car? Again: I send in JSON like (here, it's the representation of a subclass of Car, namely SelfDrivingCar): { "id" : "t1", // every Car has an Id "kind" : "selfdriving", // every Car has a type-hint "max_speed" : "200 mph", // some attribute "ai_provider" : "fastcarsai ltd." // this is SelfDrivingCar-specific } and I'd like the validation machinery look into the kind attribute, create an instance of the appropriate subclass, here e.g. SelfDrivingCar and perform validation. However, I have not found a way to implement it. I am not allowed to use Postgres or any similar tool to keep my data neutralized.   Hello all, Since some time I've been investigating more time into profiling things better, really think about how to do a thing and why. Now I'm going to start a new project, where I will be writing a report about. The report will be about anything what I wrote in the project, why, and I'll be investigating some things and do particular research about them. I've seen some reports, such as game programming in Haskell using FRP. However, after reading several reports they all seem to be build different. I have a few questions about writing a report: 1] What are the things I really should include, and what are the things I really shouldn't include? 2] Is it useful to include graphs about different methods/approaches to a several problem, where you only included one into your project, to show WHY you didn't include the other methods. Or should I just explain the method/approach used into the project. 3] Should I only be writing the report after I've completed the project, or should I also write pages about what I expect, how I'm going to build the software?   I am attempting to setup HAproxy in conjunction with Percona XtraDB Cluster on a series of 3 EC2 instances. I have found a few tutorials online dealing with this specific issue, but I am a bit stuck. Both the Percona servers and the HAproxy servers are running ubuntu 12.04. The HAProxy version is 1.4.18, When I start HAProxy I get the following error: Server pxc-back/db01 is DOWN, reason: Socket error, check duration: 2ms. I am not really sure what the issue could be. I have verified the following: EC2 security groups ports are open Poured over my config files looking for issues. I currently do not see any. Ensured that xinetd was installed Ensured that I am using the correct ip address of the mysql server. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. • Child objects in MongoDB

  I have been following along with Rob Conery's Linq for MongoDB and have come across a question. In the example he shows how you can easily nest a child object. For my current experiment I have the following structure. class Content { ... Profile Profile { get; set; } } class Profile { ... } This works great when looking at content items. The dilemma I'm facing now is if I want to treat the Profile as an atomic object. As it stands, it appears as if I can not query the Profile object directly but that it comes packaged with Content results. If I want it to be inclusive, but also be able to query on just Profile I feel like my first instinct would be to make Profiles a top level object and then create a foreign key like structure under the Content class to tie the two together. To me it feels like I'm falling back on RDBMS practices and that feels like I'm most likely going against the spirit of Mongo. How would you treat an object you need to act upon independently yet also want as a child object of another object?

• MonoDevelop: Addin generation issues

  I am having problems creating the root.mrep file for a updated MonoDevelop Addin. The Addin was originally built for MonoDevelop 2.2. I am able to build the updated project but when I use mdrun.exe setup rep-build to generate the .mrep files(main and root) it only generates the main.mrep file and not the root.mrep file. Is there a new way of building the addin that I am missing? I used both setup pack and then setup rep-build. • UIScrollView only works if the child views aren't hit

  I have a scroll view that doesn't scroll right, I've simplified the code for below. It draws the view and some horizontal buttons that i add more stuff to in the real code. If you drag the whitespace between the buttons the view scrolls. If you happen to put your finger on a button, it won't scroll. • Using Lambda Expressions trees with IEnumerable

  I've been trying to learn more about using Lamba expression trees and so I created a simple example. Here is the code, this works in LINQPad if pasted in as a C# program. void Main() { IEnumerable<User> list = GetUsers().Where(NameContains("a")); list.Dump("Users"); } // Methods public IEnumerable<User> GetUsers() { yield return new User{Name = "andrew"}; yield return new User{Name = "rob"}; yield return new User{Name = "chris"}; yield return new User{Name = "ryan"}; } public Expression<Func<User, bool>> NameContains(string namePart) { return u => u.Name.Contains(namePart); } // Classes public class User { public string Name { get; set; } } This results in the following error: The type arguments for method 'System.Linq.Enumerable.Where(System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable, System.Func)' cannot be inferred from the usage. Try specifying the type arguments explicitly. However if I just substitute the first line in main with this: IEnumerable<User> list = GetUsers().Where(u => u.Name.Contains("a")); It works fine. Can tell me what I'm doing wrong, please?

• PCA extended face recognition

  The state of the art says that we can use PCA to perform face recognition. like this, this or this I am working with a project that involves training a classifier to detect a person who is wearing glasess or hats or even a mustache. The purpose of doing this is to detect when a person that has robbed a bank, store, or have commeted some sort of crime(s) (we have their image in a database), enters a certain place ( historically we know these guys have robbed, so we should take care to avoid problems). We came first to have a distributed database with all images of criminals, then I thought to have a layer of them clasifying these criminals using accesories like hats, mustache or anything that hides their face etc... Then, to apply that knowledge to detect when a particular or a suspect person enters a comercial place. ( In practice when someone is going to rob not all the times they are using an accesorie...) What do you think about this idea of doing PCA to first detect principal components of the face and then the components of an accesory. I was thinking that maybe a probabilistic approach is better so we can compute the probability the criminal is the person that entered a place and call the respective authorities.

• Subsonic 3 ActiveRecord nested select for NotIn bug?

  I have the following Subsonic 3.0 query, which contains a nested NotIn query: public List<Order> GetRandomOrdersForNoReason(int shopId, int typeId) { // build query var q = new SubSonic.Query.Select().Top("1") .From("Order") .Where("ShopId") .IsEqualTo(shopId) .And(OrderTable.CustomerId).NotIn( new Subsonic.Query.Select("CustomerId") .From("Customer") .Where("TypeId") .IsNotEqualTo(typeId)) .OrderDesc("NewId()"); // Output query Debug.WriteLine(q.ToString()); // returned typed list return q.ExecuteTypedList<Order>(); } The internal query appears to be incorrect: SELECT TOP 1 * FROM [Order] WHERE ShopId = @0 AND CustomerId NOT IN (SELECT CustomerId FROM [Customer] WHERE TypeId = @0) ORDER BY NewId() ASC You'll notice that both parameters are @0. I'm assuming that the parameters are enumerated (starting at zero), for each "new" Select query. However, in this case where the two Select queries are nested, I would have expected the output to have two parameters named @0 and @1. My query is based on one that Rob Conery gave on his blog as a preview of the "Pakala" query tool that became Subsonic 3. His example was: int records = new Select(Northwind.Product.Schema) .Where("productid") .In( new Select("productid").From(Northwind.Product.Schema) .Where("categoryid").IsEqualTo(5) ) .GetRecordCount(); Has anyone else seen this behavior? Is it a bug, or is this an error or my part? Since I'm new to Subsonic I'm guessing that this probably programmer error on my part but I'd like confirmation if possible.
