  I'm having real difficulty with a query involving 3 tables. I need to get the 3 newest users per department grouped by department names. The groups should be sorted by the users.dateadded so the department with the newest activity is first. The users can exist in multiple departments so Im using a lookup table that just contains the userID and deptID. My tables are as follows. • How to generate and encode (for use in GA), random, strict, binary rooted trees with N leaves?

  First, I am an engineer, not a computer scientist, so I apologize in advance for any misuse of nomenclature and general ignorance of CS background. Here is the motivational background for my question: I am contemplating writing a genetic algorithm optimizer to aid in designing a power divider network (also called a beam forming network, or BFN for short). The BFN is intended to distribute power to each of N radiating elements in an array of antennas. The fraction of the total input power to be delivered to each radiating element has been specified. Topologically speaking, a BFN is a strictly binary, rooted tree. Each of the (N-1) interior nodes of the tree represents the input port of an unequal, binary power splitter. The N leaves of the tree are the power divider outputs. Given a particular power divider topology, one is still free to map the power divider outputs to the array inputs in an arbitrary order. There are N! such permutations of the outputs. There are several considerations in choosing the desired ordering: 1) The power ratio for each binary coupler should be within a specified range of values. 2) The ordering should be chosen to simplify the mechanical routing of the transmission lines connecting the power divider. The number of ouputs N of the BFN may range from, say, 6 to 22. I have already written a genetic algorithm optimizer that, given a particular BFN topology and desired array input power distribution, will search through the N! permutations of the BFN outputs to generate a design with compliant power ratios and good mechanical routing. I would now like to generalize my program to automatically generate and search through the space of possible BFN topologies. As I understand it, for N outputs (leaves of the binary tree), there are $C_{N-1}$ different topologies that can be constructed, where $C_N$ is the Catalan number. I would like to know how to encode an arbitrary tree having N leaves in a way that is consistent with a chromosomal description for use in a genetic algorithm. Also associated with this is the need to generate random instances for filling the initial population, and to implement crossover and mutations operators for this type of chromosome. Any suggestions will be welcome. Please minimize the amount of CS lingo in your reply, since I am not likely to be acquainted with it. Thanks in advance, Peter

• Read tab delimited text file into MySQL table with PHP

  I am trying to read in a series of tab delimited text files into existing MySQL tables. I echo out the code, paste it into a MySQL editor and it runs fine, it just won't execute from the PHP script. What am I doing wrong?? Si

• PHP: Next Available Value in an Array, starting with a non-indexed value

  I've been stumped on this PHP issue for about a day now. Basically, we have an array of hours formatted in 24-hour format, and an arbitrary value ($hour) (also a 24-hour). The problem is, we need to take $hour, and get the next available value in the array, starting with the value that immediately proceeds $hour. The array might look something like: $goodHours = array('8,9,10,11,12,19,20,21). Then the hour value might be: $hour = 14; So, we need some way to know that 19 is the next best time. Additionally, we might also need to get the second, third, or fourth (etc) available value. The issue seems to be that because 14 isn't a value in the array, there is not index to reference that would let us increment to the next value. To make things simpler, I've taken $goodHours and repeated the values several times just so I don't have to deal with going back to the start (maybe not the best way to do it, but a quick fix). I have a feeling this is something simple I'm missing, but I would be so appreciative if anyone could shed some light. Erik

Rob Conery tweeted the following a couple of hours ago: Class name of the day: "Maybe<T>". Method of the day: "ToMaybe<T>()". He then went on to offer a Tekpub coupon to anyone who could guess where it came from. He linked to a further tweet which had a clue and from that I worked out that it was Entity Framework Code-Only but while trying to determine the usage someone else answered to which Rob replied ...EF CodeOnly - dealing with uncertainty.... So my question boils down to what exactly is he referring to with uncertainty and how does this fit in to Entity Framework Code-Only?

• input file cannot be found

  I am just messing around with reading input files with java until I got stumped at the most basic of steps... finding the input file! The input.txt file is in the same directory as my class file that is calling it yet eclipse still gives me an error that it cant be found: "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.Error: Unresolved compilation problem: Unhandled exception type FileNotFoundException" My code: package pa; import java.util.Scanner; public class Project { public static void main(String[] args) { java.io.File file = new java.io.File("input.txt"); System.out.println(file.getAbsolutePath()); Scanner input = new Scanner(file); } } input.txt is in the same package, same folder and everything. • PIG doesn't read my custom InputFormat

  I have a custom MyInputFormat that suppose to deal with record boundary problem for multi-lined inputs. But when I put the MyInputFormat into my UDF load function. • Why is the servlet request not available in the portlet API

  The portlet API deos not provide any reference to the enclosing servlet request and response objects. I know it is not the preferred model of interaction with the user, but it seems draconian to remove all access. I understand that for portlet driven interaction with the user, you want to use portlet URLs, and let the portlet container manage all the complexity. However if you have a number of portlets which are basically showing variants of the same data, it makes sense for them to be able to use the enclosing request to drive the data. We ended up using using a Liferay specific call to get the request, and it all seems to work as we wish. However I do feel the guilt. So my question really is, is there an underlying deep reason for the prohibition, or is it just to enforce the authors view of the API environment?

  hello I've placed this code my didload method, to get a black Navigationbar. rootTabBarController.navigationController.navigationBar.barStyle = UIBarStyleBlackOpaque; rootTabBarController.moreNavigationController.navigationBar.barStyle = UIBarStyleBlackOpaque; its working fine, but when the user rearranges the Icons in the editmode, i'm getting a default blue navigation bar. • Error setting env thru subprocess.call to run a python script on a remote linux machine

  I am running a python script on a windows machine to invoke another python script on a remote linux machine. I am using subprocess.call with ssh to do this, like below: subprocess.call('ssh -i <identify file> username@hostname python <script_on_linux_machine>') and this works fine. However, if I want to set some environment variables, like below: subprocess.call('ssh -i <identify file> username@hostname python <script_on_linux_machine>', env={key1:value1}) it fails. I get the following error: ssh_connect: getnameinfo failed ssh: connect to host <hostname> port 22: Operation not permitted 255 I've tried splitting the ssh commands into list and passing. Didn't help. I've tried to run other 'local'(windows) commands thru subprocess.call() and tried setting the env. It works fine. I've tried to run other commands(such as ls) on the remote linux machine. Again, subprocess.call() works fine, as long as I don't try to set the environment. What am I doing wrong? Would I be able to set the environment for a python script on a remote machine? Any help will be appreciated.

  Is it possible to create a WCF service (web service) that only accepts a single connection at any one time with all other calls either queued or rejected. Need to implement the competitive consumer pattern where there are a number of clients which could deal with task at hand but when a client askes for more work a task must go to only one of them. Usual done as part of an enterprise service bus but can not find one that I'm happy to start using so looking to get this behaviour through a WCF service. Any ideas people ?

• MySQL database Int overflow and can't login in.

  I have a MySQL database on my server and I"m pretty sure it's an int over flow on one table with an auto_increment field that's crashing it. I can delete the table, it's not very important, but I can't get into the server. Is there anyway to delete that database from the file system or without logging into MySQL? HELP!   I have a query SELECT assetid, type_code, version, name, short_name, status, languages, charset, force_secure, created, created_userid, updated, updated_userid, published, published_userid, status_changed, status_changed_userid FROM sq_ast WHERE assetid = 7 which doesn't work and throws ERROR: operator does not exist: character varying = integer LINE 4: FROM sq_ast WHERE assetid = 7 I can get it to work by doing SELECT assetid, type_code, version, name, short_name, status, languages, charset, force_secure, created, created_userid, updated, updated_userid, published, published_userid, status_changed, status_changed_userid FROM sq_ast WHERE assetid = '7' Please note the quoting of the 7 in the WHERE clause... I am deploying an huge application and I cannot rewrite the core... similarly I don't want to risk changing the type of the column... I'm no Postgres expert... please help... Is there an option for strict casting of columns???

• Keyboard blocking my view

  I have a UIView with another UIView inside it. On the inside UIView there is a textbox which I want to fill in. When I try to fill it in the keyboard blocks my view: The UIViewController has the following containerView = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:[UIScreen mainScreen].bounds]; self.view=containerView; //The apropriate releases etc are further on... When I touch it, the keyboard comes up as expected, but blocks the textbox I'm trying to fill in. How can I force the view to slide up? • Delphi7 - How can i copy a file that is being written to

  I have an application that logs information to a daily text file every second on a master PC. A Slave PC on the network using the same application would like to copy this text file to its local drive. I can see there is going to be file access issues. These files should be no larger than 30-40MB each. the network will be 100MB ethernet. I can see there is potential for the copying process to take longer than 1 second meaning the logging PC will need to open the file for writing while it is being read. What is the best method for the file writing(logging) and file copying procedures? I know there is the standard Windows CopyFile() procedure, however this has given me file access problems. There is also TFileStream using the fmShareDenyNone flag, but this also very occasionally gives me an access problem too (like 1 per week). What is this the best way of accomplishing this task? • CQRS - Should a Command try to create a "complex" master-detail entity?

  I've been reading Greg Young and Udi Dahan's thoughts on Command Query Responsibilty Separation and a lot of what I read strikes a chord with me. My domain (we track vehicles which are doing deliveries) has the concept of a Route which contains one or more Stops. I need my customers to be able to set these up in our system by calling a webservice, and then be able to retrieve information about a Route and how the vehicle is progressing. In the past I would have "cut-down" DTO classes which closely resemble my domain classes, and the customer would create a RouteDto with an array of StopDto(s), and call our CreateRoute webmethod, passing in the RouteDto. When they query our system by calling the GetRouteDetails method, I would return exactly the same objects to them. One of the appealing aspects of CQRS is that the RouteDto might have all manner of properties that the customer wants to query, but have no business setting when they create a Route. So I create a separate CreateRouteRequest class which is passed in when calling the CreateRoute "command", and a Route DTO class which gets returned as a query result. class Route{ string Reference; List<Stop> Stops; } But I need my customer to provide me with Route AND Stop details when they create a route. As I see it I could either... Give my CreateRouteRequest class a Stops(s) property which is an array of "something" representing the data they need to provide about each stop - but what do I call this class? It's not a Stop as that's what I'm calling the list of DTO inside my Route DTO, but I don't like "CreateStopRequest". I also wonder if I'm stuck in a CRUD mindset here thinking in terms of master-detail information and asking the customer to think like that too. class CreateRouteRequest{ string Reference; ... List<CreateStopRequest> Stops; } or They call CreateRoute, and then make a number of calls to an AddStopToRoute method. This feels a bit more "behavioural" but I'm going to lose the ability to treat creating a route including its stops as a single atomic command. If they create a Route and then try to add a Stop which fails due to some validation problem they're going to have a partially correct Route. The fact that I can't come up with a good name for the list of "StopCreationData" objects I'd be working with in option 1, makes me wonder if there's something I'm missing.
