• Multilingual sites and Google search results, using sub-folders for language

  About three months ago we added an English version of our, previously Japanese only, site under the subfolder /en/ we've tried to follow the sometimes incomplete best practices laid out by Google by adding alternate tags to all pages that are currently translated. The top page for instance has the following meta tags for language. <link rel="canonical" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="ja" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="/en/"> While the English main page under /en/ has <link rel="canonical" href="/en/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="ja" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="/en/"> Alternate languages are setup in the sitemap. (as per Google's recommendations) It seems however that Google absolutely refuses to show the English top page in results when the user is using English at google.com if you search you'll, as of this post, get the Japanese description and a title that Google has apparently invented instead of the title and description in the meta-tags for the /en/ index page. Does anyone have any experience with subfolders actually working to affect search results? What are the best practices for ensuring that the correct language version of my website is displayed through Google and other search engines? And how long will it take before the new language version becomes prominent in search engine results?

• Where should "display functions" live in an MVC web app?

  I'm using the Yii Framework which is an MVC php framework that is pretty similar to your standard web-based MVC framework. I want to display the related data from a many-to-many table as a list of strings in my view. Assuming a table schema like: tag { id, name } post { id, title, content, date } post_tag { post_id, tag_id } A post will display like: Date: 9/27/2012 Title: Some Title Content: blah blah blah... Tags: Smart Funny Cool Informative I can achieve this by doing something like this in my Post view: <?php echo join(' ', array_map(function($tag) { return $tag->name; }, $model->tags)); ?> (where $model->tags is an array of Tag objects associated with my model) My questions are: Is this amount of code/logic okay in the view? (Personally I think I'd rather just reference a property or call a single function.) If not, where should this code live? In the model? the controller? a helper? Potentially I may want to use in in other views as well. Ultimately I think its purely a display issue which would make me think it should be in the view, but then I have to repeat the code in any view I want to use it in.

I find it really difficult to follow what is going on in Python when things like this break. In the languages I mentioned previously it's fairly straightforward to figure things like this out -- check the method signature and check your parameters. Looking at the Django documentation for half an hour left me just as lost. Looking at the source for get_or_create(self, **kwargs) didn't help either since there is no method signature and the code appears very generic. A next step would be to debug the method and try to figure out what is happening, but this seems a bit extreme... I seem to be missing some fundamental operating principle here... what is it? How do I resolve issues like this on my own in the future?

  Hi, I'm new to Hibernate+Derby... I've seen this issue mentioned throughout the google, but have not seen a proper resolution.   I really need someone to help me to fully understand how to do many-to-many relationship with Entity Framework 4 CTP 5, POCO. I need to understand 3 concepts: How to config my model to indicates some tables are many-to-many. How to properly do insert. How to properly do update. Here are my current models: public class MusicSheet { [Key] public int ID { get; set; } public string Title { get; set; } public string Key { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<Author> Authors { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<Tag> Tags { get; set; } } public class Author { [Key] public int ID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Bio { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<MusicSheet> MusicSheets { get; set; } } public class Tag { [Key] public int ID { get; set; } public string TagName { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<MusicSheet> MusicSheets { get; set; } } As you can see, the MusicSheet can have many Authors or Tags, and an Author or Tag can have multiple MusicSheets. Again, my questions are: What to do on the EntityTypeConfiguration to set the relationship between them as well as mapping to an table/object that associates with the many-to-many relationship. How to insert a new music sheets (where it might have multiple authors or multiple tags). How to update a music sheet. For example, I might set TagA, TagB to MusicSheet1, but later I need to change the tags to TagA and TagC. It seems like I need to first check to see if the tags already exists, if not, insert the new tag and then associate it with the music sheet (so that I doesn't re-insert TagA?). Or this is something already handled by the framework? Thank you very much. I really hope to fully understand it rather than just doing it without fully understand what's going on. Especially on #3.

• Searching in Ruby on Rails - How do I search on each word entered and not the exact string?

  I have built a blog application w/ ruby on rails and I am trying to implement a search feature. The blog application allows for users to tag posts. The tags are created in their own table and belong_to :post. When a tag is created, so is a record in the tag table where the name of the tag is tag_name and associated by post_id. Tags are strings. I am trying to allow a user to search for any word tag_name in any order. Here is what I mean. Lets say a particular post has a tag that is 'ruby code controller'. In my current search feature, that tag will be found if the user searches for 'ruby', 'ruby code', or 'ruby code controller'. It will not be found if the user types in 'ruby controller'. Essentially what I am saying is that I would like each word entered in the search to be searched for, not necessarily the 'string' that is entered into the search. I have been experimenting with providing multiple textfields to allow the user to type in multiple words, and also have been playing around with the code below, but can't seem to accomplish the above. I am new to ruby and rails so sorry if this is an obvious question and prior to installing a gem or plugin I thought I would check to see if there was a simple fix. • Django save_m2m() and excluded field

  hi, in a ModelForm I replaced a field by excluding it and adding a new one with the same name, as shown below in AddRestaurantForm. When saving the form with the code shown below, I get an error in form.save_m2m() ("Truncated incorrect DOUBLE value"), which seems to be due to the function to attempt to save the tag field, while it is excluded. Is the save_m2m() function supposed to save excluded fields? Is there anything wrong in my code? • Motivation and use of move constructors in C++

  I recently have been reading about move constructors in C++ (see e.g. here) and I am trying to understand how they work and when I should use them. As far as I understand, a move constructor is used to alleviate the performance problems caused by copying large objects. The wikipedia page says: "A chronic performance problem with C++03 is the costly and unnecessary deep copies that can happen implicitly when objects are passed by value." I normally address such situations by passing the objects by reference, or by using smart pointers (e.g. boost::shared_ptr) to pass around the object (the smart pointers get copied instead of the object). What are the situations in which the above two techniques are not sufficient and using a move constructor is more convenient?

• navigation menus and SEO

  I've always have my doubts about navigation menus effect on SEO. You know, the vertical menus on the top that show in every page in the site linking to main sections and subsections. My issue is that if not done dynamically (i.e. after page is loaded or something), from a search engine's point of view it probably looks like a whole bunch of links in the beginning of the page, and links that probably have nothing to do with the page being analyzed, so it's probably not only confusing it, but also giving link 'juice' to the wrong pages or reducing its value. When I've asked SEO people about this, I usually get a "Google is smart, they'll recognize it as a menu and ignore it" response, but I'm not convinced (and the 'Google is smart' argument sounds almost like religion discussion to me). So does it affect SEO negatively or not? Are there any official posts on this topic?

• Do navigation menu links negatively impact SEO for pages' content?

  I've always had my doubts about navigation menus effect on SEO. You know, the vertical menus on the top that show in every page in the site linking to main sections and subsections. My issue is that if not done dynamically (i.e. after page is loaded or something), from a search engine's point of view it probably looks like a whole bunch of links in the beginning of the page, and links that probably have nothing to do with the page being analyzed, so it's probably not only confusing it, but also giving link 'juice' to the wrong pages or reducing its value. When I've asked SEO people about this, I usually get a "Google is smart, they'll recognize it as a menu and ignore it" response, but I'm not convinced (and the 'Google is smart' argument sounds almost like religion discussion to me). So does it affect SEO negatively or not? Are there any official posts on this topic?

• External hard drive failing, is backup recovery possible?

  I have a Seagate Freeagent external hard drive. While I was backing it up on Windows XP my pc crashed and I received the horrifying "Delayed Write Error" when I rebooted citing "$MFT" and a few other files. I tried to unmount it, but to no avail. Now my pc just crashes when I try to access it via Windows. In Ubuntu I am able to view it through disk utility. SMART status is "DISK FAILURE IMMINENT". Fdisk doesn't work, and the SMART tests fail on "Reallocated Sector Count". Is there any way for me to rescue any of my data. I can still access the drive but as soon as I do that it crashes.

So here is the question: Should I encapsulate those dependant types to their parent types (interface hierarchies) or not or explicitly repeat each type for every single level of my type system or ...?

• Using Regex, how can I remove certain characters from inside angle-brackets, leaving the characters

  Edit: To be clear, please understand that I am not using Regex to parse the html, that's crazy talk! I'm simply wanting to clean up a messy string of html so it will parse Edit #2: I should also point out that the control character I'm using is a special unicode character - it's not something that would ever be used in a proper tag under any normal circumstances Suppose I have a string of html that contains a bunch of control characters and I want to remove the control characters from inside tags only, leaving the characters outside the tags alone. For example Here the control character is the numeral "1". Input The quick 1<strong>orange</strong> lemming <sp11a1n 1class1='jumpe111r'11>jumps over</span> 1the idle 1frog Desired Output The quick 1<strong>orange</strong> lemming <span class='jumper'>jumps over</span> 1the idle 1frog So far I can match tags which contain the control character but I can't remove them in one regex. I guess I could perform another regex on my matches, but I'd really like to know if there's a better way.   I first want to say I've read the Subversion manual. I've read this question. I've also read this question. Here's my dilemma. Let's say I have 3 repositories laid out like this: DataAccessObject/ branches/ tags/ trunk/ DataAccessObject/ DataAccessObjectTests/ PlanObject/ branches/ tags/ trunk/ PlanObject/ PlanObjectTests/ WinFormsPlanViewer/ branches/ tags/ trunk/ WinFormsPlanViewer/ The PlanObject and DataAccessObject repositories contain shared projects. They are used by the WinFormsPlanViewer, but also by several other projects in several other repositories. Bear with me here. I put an svn:externals definition on the WinFormsPlanViewer/trunk folder like this: https://server/svn/PlanObject/trunk Objects https://server/svn/DataAccessObject/trunk Objects And here's what I see after I do an svn update. WinFormsPlanViewer/ branches/ tags/ trunk/ WinFormsPlanViewer/ Objects/ DataAccessObject/ DataAccessObjectTests/ The PlanObject stuff doesn't even come down in the update! I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but there's an externals definition on the PlanObject/trunk folder also: https://server/svn/DataAccessObject/trunk Objects What's going on here? What am I doing wrong? Are there bad consequences of referencing the PlanObject and the DataAccessObject from the WinFormsPlanViewer using svn:externals when the PlanObject references the DataAccessObject using svn:externals also?

• Autocomplete Error Question - Ruby on Rails

  I have built a very simple blog application using Ruby on Rails. New to both Ruby and Rails so excuse the stupid questions. I currently have two tables that relate to this question. I have a Post table and a Tag table. Basically I set it up such that Post has_many :tags and Tag belongs_to :post. I am using AJAX to process and display the tags in the show view of the post. I installed the auto_complete plugin and I am getting an error when I enter the letters in the text_field_with_auto_complete for tag creation. My suspicion is this is because the form is a remote_form_for or something I am doing wrong in the routes.rb. • CSS style to create an HTML with an image on left and input text boxes on right that fills all space

  I need to create an HTML page (a JqueryUI dialog but this isn't the problem) containing an image on left (size is fixed to 75x75) and on right some input text boxes, input boxes must resize to all remaining space.
