• No audio from USB device on iMac

  My computer froze the other day and started a buzzing noise. After I restarted in the middle of it, the buzzing persisted. A few restarts later, the buzzing stopped, but I can't get audio to come from my audio interface setup anymore. I'm using an M-Audiophile USB to connect to studio monitors, and there's absolutely no audio. I've tried restarting many times and unplugging - still nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

• Web authentication using LDAP and Apache?

  I am working on a project of setting up a web administered inventory database for my work (or if they don't want it then i'll enjoy learning about it) and hit the problem of allowing only authorized users to access the website (In its testing/development phase, I allow all people to navigate to the website to add entries to the database and query it). I am trying to make it so only particular users in the domain (Active Directory) are allowed to access the website after they are queried about their credentials. I read that Apache (I am using a LAMP server) has a means of asking visitors to the website to provide LDAP credentials in order to gain access to the site, but I wasn't sure if that was exactly what I was looking for. If anyone has experience in the LDAP configurations for Apache that I mentioned or any other means of securely authenticating with websites I would greatly appreciate advice or a direction to go Thank you!

  I have a (text) file containing a list of web site addresses. I know that I can open the file in an editor and then copy-paste the addresses to the browser address bar. That means, if I have ten addresses in that file, I will need ten copy-paste operations, which must be tedious. But is there a way to ask the browser (preferably Google Chrome or Firefox) to open all of them in one go in different tabs? I am using Ubuntu, if that is related in any way to the solution you provide.

  These days I've been learning a lot about how different scientific fields are trying to move their data over to the Semantic Web in order to "free up data from being stored in isolated silos". I read a lot about how these fields are saying how their efforts are implementing the "visions" of the Semantic Web. As a learner (and from purely a learning perspective) I was curious to know why, if semantic technology is deemed to be so powerful, the efforts have been around for years but myself and a lot of people I know have never even heard of it until very recently? Also, I don't come across any scholarly articles deeming "oh, our inferencing engine was able to make such and such discovery, which is helping us pave our way to solving...." etc. It seems that there are genuine efforts across different institutions, fields, and disciplines to shift all their data to a "semantic" format, but what happens after all that's been done? All the ontologies have been created/unified, and then what?

By looking at some of the popular games on NG, there seem to be many in the 5-10Mb and a few in the 10-25Mb range. I was wondering if anyone knew of other notable large-scale games and what their sizes were, and if there have been any cases of games being disadvantaged because of their size. • Lubuntu upgrade to 13.04 killed sound with ALSA. How to troubleshoot?

  After upgrading to 13.04 from 12.10 Lubuntu lost audio playback after unplugging usb soundcard (Polycom) and plugging it back in. Volume control was gray and leading to pulseaudio mixer (not installed) so I uninstalled the pulseaudio package. I also removed and reinstalled the alsa-base package. • SharePoint Web Analytics not tracking usage for main application

  My SP 2010 setup is two separate applications - one for the main portal and one for MySite. Whilst WebAnalytics is tracking usage of MySite it's not showing any stats for the main Portal. The only thing it lists is the number of site collections but no page views etc. The WA service is clearly running to pick up data for MySite. In Configure web analytics and health data collection everything is ticked. I can't find any obvious settings that are different between the two applications. Where should I look to get usage tracking correctly?

  What I want is the following: When I plug in my headphones, I want the sound to be un-muted and set to a specific volume level. When I unplug my headphones, I want the sound to be muted (or set to a specific volume level). Setting the volume levels isn't the problem, but I somehow need to do this when un-/plugging the headphones, so I'm looking for a way to get notified of those events. I quickly found /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 to indicate whether headphones are plugged in or not, so I tried to monitor it using inotifywait and change the volume level based on modified notifications. Unfortunately inotifywait failed because proc isn't an ordinary filesystem. Are there other ways to do this (maybe via PulseAudio)? Audio device: Intel HDA, audio codec: Conexant CX20585.

Code and some documentation is moved from the staging area to production either through on-demand jobs or nightly via a global replication job. The production server of course sits isolated in a DMZ. There is some content that gets uploaded to the live server that needs to be replicated back to staging. Our security team is locking the network down (and they should) and restricting access to the live server.   I have a bunch of Xvid files that each have an audio stream that I do not want. How can I strip the audio track I don't want using the Linux command line? I don't need the whole script (loop), just what command I would use to process each avi file individually (unless the cmd itself has batch modification built into it). I don't believe the file is in an mkv container, as mkvinfo doesn't find anything.   Hi We need to set up a website which makes two or three large files publicly available - the files will be 1 or 2 terrabytes each. Although they will be public, in practise I expect only a relatively small number of scientists will want to download them. What is the best way to allow this? I've had a quick talk to a web-hosting provider (rackspace) and they suggested a hybrid solution. An entry-level managed server (we predict fairly low traffic for the website, but we do need to install some custom CGI software). Some cloud storage which hooks into Limelight Networks. This would host the large files, for download by FTP. It sounded OK to me but I know relatively little about server administration. Does it make sense? Thanks in advance, Mark

• IIS web service responds on server, not from remote client

  I have installed a web service on a server running IIS (v6, as far as I can tell). There is another service installed, which responds as expected. My service responds correctly when a browser is pointed to localhost, but there is no response when a remote client tries to query the service. Fiddler on the remote client simply reports a timeout. Wireshark on the remote client shows no response at all from the server, no NACK, nothing. Wireshark on the server detects no query at the relevant port (the service is installed on port 8080). There are no relevant entries in the event viewer. Obviously there is some issue of permissions or authentication. I have tried to compare my service to the service that works, but I have not been able to locate relevant parameters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I'm designing a game that depends heavily on audio; I will have some 300+ speech files (most of them just a word or two long). This can very quickly escalate the size of my final game. What's the optimal way to encode/compress speech files to keep the size minimal without getting audio artifacts? Please address both per-file compression/encoding, and also zipping/compressing the set of all speech files together in your answer. Because I'm not sure which (or combination of both) factors will give me the best results. • Trouble opening my router to my web server

  Here's the story. I have a webs server created and connected to my router. The website works great when I'm connected to the router, but when I'm off the network I can't access the website. I got the IP for my router by googling "what is my ip." I have opened ports 80 to 10080 to link to the server in the router. One odd thing that I don't understand. When I am in network if I access XXX.XXX.XX.XX:80 I can access the web page no problem. If I access XXX.XXX.XX.XX:81 (or any other port) I get the error "Cannot access server." Any idea what the problem could be? Could it be my ISP?
