• My Computer hangs for a few minutes just after startup, and then is fine.

  So I just built myself a reasonably beefy computer, and I installed Windows 7 on it. However, I start the machine up each morning and within a few minutes, the computer will semi hang. That is the mouse is responsive, and most of the time I can open task manager, or a new tab in Chrome. Occasionally windows will be labelled as 'Not responding'. Then, the machine will get over it's problem, and will be nice and quick until I turn it off. Here's my specs: CPU: AMD Phenom-II X4 955 Black (Quad Core, 3.2ghz) RAM: 4GB of DDR3 1300 MOBO: ASUS M4A785T-M (Latest BIOS) HARD DRIVES: 2x1TB Western Digital Caviar Blacks in RAID-0. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64. GPU: ASUS GT240 1GB. I believe this issue relates to the RAID array, as I didn't have the lockup problem before I created the array. I purchased a second drive and reformatted after creating a RAID array, since the single drive was a little on the pokey side (compared to the rest of the computer). What I have tried: Updated Raid Drivers Malware checks Windows Updates Unecessary Services CPU and Disk activity appears to be low (via Resource Monitor) No strange errors in the error log. Any thoughts?

• Sony PMB causing failure to load Windows 7 Pro 64-bit normally or even Safe Mode

  After installing Sony's Picture Motion Browser on my desktop with Windows 7 Pro x64, it always goes to Startup Repair due to Windows 7 failing to start. This always happens after I try to install it. I've installed with all unnecessary programs closed and all disk drives and unnecessary usb ports empty. I don't exactly know what is causing the problem. Any ideas? I don't know why it's taking so long to do a single row insert. Reads are really really fast something like 0.005 seconds. With using the example configuration from here dev mysql innodb it averages ~0.002 to ~0.005 seconds. Why it takes more than 100x more time to do a single insert makes no sense to me. My computer is as follows. OS:Debian Sid x86-x64, Mysql 5.1, RAM:4GB ddr2, cpu 2.0Ghz dual core, HDD 7200RPM 32MB cache 640GB. Why it's taking almost 100x as much time for a SELECT * FROM items; vs INSERT INTO items ...; will never make any sense to me. It's still a small table at only 70 rows, and took that long even when it had 0 rows.

• Windows 7 pc freezes for an indeterminate amount of time after unlocking

  Not sure if this type of question is appropriate for this forum, but I've tried everything I can think of to solve this problem aside from format/reinstall. I recently got a new work PC (Dell optiplex 755) with windows 7 professional x64. Standard developer software installed for .net development: VS2008, VS2005, SQL management studio, office 2007, etc. Recently I've been having this weird problem where after I lock my pc, when I try to unlock it, the screen will be black for awhile after unlocking. I can ctl+alt+del and put my password in but then it just goes black. The amount of time on the black screen seems to be related to the amount of time I am away from my PC. If only away a few minutes, it'll take about a minute to get to the desktop. If away for an hour, could take up to 15 minutes. If I lock it and go home for the night, I have to restart my PC in the morning (I've let it sit for an hour after a night of being locked and nothing happened). It doesn't do it every time but definitely the majority of the time. One weird thing I've seen is that if I remote into my machine before trying to log back in it does not do it. I uninstalled all software back to the point when I remember it started happening and it still does it. I was using this PC for a few weeks without this problem happening at all. Anyone know what my next troubleshooting steps could be? My IT department tried to fix it by moving my old profile to another disk and having me log in, effectively recreating a profile from scratch but that didn't solve it. As I said above if this isn't the right forum for these types of questions please let me know. Thanks in advance!

  I am implementing a new instance of (Open-source v10.12) Chef in an existing environment. Currently the environment is mostly Windows, but more Linux is being introduced. I have used Chef in a previous gig, however that was a *nix-only environment. Because this is a primarily-Windows environment, my main workstation is Windows 7 (x64), and I use Powershell as my main terminal. I created a ~\.chef directory, populated with a knife.rb and my client.pem file. When I run knife client list from ~, I get the expected results. I keep my work in Dropbox just in case my laptop should fail or be stolen. When I run knife client list from the repo directory (C:\Users\waldo\Dropbox_company\projects\chef`), I get ERROR: Your private key could not be loaded from C:/home/waldo/.chef/waldog.pem Check your configuration file and ensure that your private key is readable (Note that the path is incorrect) This is the progression as I walk up the tree towards my ~ running knife client list: C:\Users\waldo\Dropbox\_company\projects\ => Above error C:\Users\waldo\Dropbox\_company\ => Above error C:\Users\waldo\Dropbox\ => It works! • Windows, why 8 GB of RAM feel like a few MB?

  I'm on Windows 7 x64 with 4-core Intel i7 and 8 GB of RAM, but lately it feels like my computer's "RAM" is located solely on the hard drive. Here is what the task manager shows: The total amount of memory used by the processes in the list is just about 1 GB. And what is happening on my computer for a few days now is that one program (Cataloger.exe) is continually processing large quantities of (rather big) files, repeatedly opening and reading them for the purposes of cataloging. But it doesn't grow too much in memory and stays about that size, about 90 MB. However, the amount of data it processes in, say, 30 minutes can be measured in gigabytes. So my guess was that Windows file caching has something to do with it. And after some research on the topic, I came across this program, called RamMap, that displays detailed info on a computer's RAM. Here is the screenshot: So to me it looks like Windows keeps in RAM huge amounts of data that is no longer needed, redirecting any RAM allocation requests to the pagefile on the hard drive. Even when I close Cataloger.exe, the RamMap reports the size of the mapped file as about the same for a long time on. And it's not just this particular program. Earlier I noticed that similar slowdown occurred after some massive file operations with other programs. So it's really not an exception. Whatever it is, it slows down the computer by like 50 times. Opening a new tab in Chrome takes 20-30 seconds, opening a new program can take up to a minute. Due to the slowdown, some programs even crash. So what do you think, is the problem hiding in file caching or somewhere else? How do I solve it?

• Intel ICH9/10R raid 5 drive failure

  About a year ago I was using the native Intel ICH9R Raid 5 an Intel P35 based motherboard. The system was running Vista x64 and when one of the drives failed Vista blue screened on boot until I had figured out which drive had failed and removed it (a rather nerve racking hit and miss affair). The same thing happened some months later on another similar system so it wasn't a once off. This wasn't the robust raid 5 drive failure behavior that I would have hoped for and expected. I moved to Highpoint Rocketraid 2300 and haven't had any problems although I have yet to have a drive fail with this set up. But I am now looking to build a new system based on an i7 and Windows 7. At the moment Highpoint doesn't have drivers for Windows 7 so I am considering moving back to the on board Intel Raid. Yes I know I that I might get away with using the Vista drivers but I don't really want to take that chance with critical data. The question then is has anyone else experienced a drive failure with Intel raid and how did the OS and drivers handle it? Is it safe to go back?

• DXVA and ATI.... what am I missing?

  ATI Radeon HD3650 ffdshow (the one comes with CCCP 2010-10 AND the latest from Free-codecs site) Catalyst 10.12 Latest DirectX, Windows 7 HP x64 If I try to play it simply, the player (mpc-hc) won't use the acceleration. If I disable checks, I get artifacts. Back then it worked perfectly with my Intel and ATI too (Lenovo ThinkPad T500, switchable graphics). This only appeared recently. What should I do? What am I missing? If possible, I don't really want to downgrade drivers (waaa ATI drivers s.ck ... sorry but.. honestly), because the older one got a buggy DP driver so my external display gets a totally wrong resolution. • Translating IPTables rule to UFW

  we are using an Ubuntu 12.04 x64 LTS VPS. Firewall being used is UFW. I have setup a Varnish + LEMP setup. along with other things, including an Openswan IPSEC VPN from our office to the VPS data center. A second in house Ubuntu box is to act as MySQL slave and fetch data from the VPS through the VPN. Master's ppp0 is seen as 10.1.2.1 from the slave, they ping etc. I have done the various required tasks but I can't get the client (slave) MySQL (nor telnet 10.1.2.1 3306) to access the master through the VPN unless I issue this fairly obvious IPTables command: iptables -A INPUT -s 10.1.2.0/24 -p tcp --dport 3306 -j ACCEPT I willingly forced the accepted input to come from the last octet. With this rule everything works just fine! However I want to translate this command to UFW syntax so to keep everything in one place. Now I admit being inexperienced with UFW, I prepared rules like: ufw allow proto tcp from 10.1.2.0/24 port mysql and 2-3 variations involving specifying 3306 instead of mysql, specifying a target IP (MySQL's my.cnf at the moment is configured as 0.0.0.0) and similar but I just don't seem to be able to replicate the simple iptables rule in a functional way. Anyone could kindly give me a suggestion that is not to dump UFW? Thanks in advance.

• Monitor displays at 1024x768; scrolls screen for higher resolutions

  I have a dual monitor setup. Normally, they both display at 1680x1050. They have been setup this way for about a year. I'm using Windows XP Professional 2003 x64 SP2. Today, out of nowhere, one of the monitors kicked back to a lower resolution. I was not playing with any configuration at the time.. in fact all I had done was close a window (maybe a browser). But the thing is that the resolution is still preserved partially by the fact that the screen will scroll when you move the mouse. So it's like looking through a 1024x768 window into a 1680x1050 world. The monitor itself does not appear to be damaged, because I also have it connected to my netbook (via KVM) and higher resolutions work fine. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers to no avail. System restore doesn't help either. I'm unsure of the exact ATI card I'm using.. Device Manager lists it as "Radeon X300/X550/X1050". There is no Catalyst Control Center software installed. I tried to install it, but there doesn't seem to be a way to install it by itself ... it forces you to install another driver, which breaks both of my displays, forcing me to go into safe mode and run system restore again. Any ideas? Thanks

• Control Panel as menu includes a blank item

  When viewed as a menu attached to the Start Menu in Windows 7 Ultimate x64, the Control Panel contains a blank item. It looks like this: This item cannot be deleted or removed. I also cannot create a shortcut to it. No error message is displayed, instead simply nothing happens. I've tried using Shell Object Editor (using Run as Administrator) to find out if there is an errant entry on the Control Panel, but many entries (almost two dozen) are blank. There are several valid entries as well. I've looked through the registry and through C:\Windows, \system32, and \SysWOW64 but have had no success. I looked at this question, but I am not using Windows XP and thus have no option to use Tweak UI's Rebuild Icons function. Please note that this is no empty entry in the Control Panel when opened normally, only when attached to the Start Menu as a menu. I have compared the list of entries on the attached menu to the normal Control Panel and other than the blank entry, they are exactly the same. Nothing is missing from one or the other. I've also compared the menu and the normal view to reference images and lists of Control Panel items and have found no irregularities. Is anyone familiar with this problem or know of a solution? I've performed virus and malware scans and found nothing. I've used CCleaner with no change. Nothing with Shell Object Editor. Nothing with Registry Editor. Certainly someone here knows how to fix this. My only guess is the many blank entries visible in Shell Object Editor, but I am reluctant to delete that many items without further analysis and guidance. I appreciate your time and consideration.

• Windows memory logged on vs logged off

  Let's say I power on my fresh installed Windows 7 x64 machine. After Windows boots up, there are a bunch of services being started in the background that start allocating memory. Then I enter my user/pass and Windows logs me in. Let's supose I don't do anythig else (I don't explicitely start any application) and I don't have any other app installed by me. So it's fresh install of my machine. My question is: how much memory is needed for all the UI & other stuff? Is it a good indicator to look into task manager and check all the processes started under my user name and sum up all the memory consumed by those processes to get the total amount of memory I am consuming just to stay logged on? Basically this is my question: how much memory is needed just to stay logged on? Now, if log off would all the memory be released back to the system so that the background services can benefit of? Also, I assume that there might be a different discussion for each Windows flavors (?)

• Can't get past bootcamp Windows logo, freezes immediately after picking boot partition -- Windows 7

  Hi, I had a fine install of Windows 7 alongside Snow Leopard. I had a power outage, and Windows restarted. When I booted via the "Hold Option" sceen, it started hanging at the grayscale "Windows logo" (squares) that comes up after picking the Windows drive from the bootcamp loader (the Windows version of the grayscale Apple logo when OS X loads). I think this happened once before, and installing rEFIt helped. I did that, but it continued to hang at the same point. I finally got fed up with it and erased the Windows partition via Disk Utility. I then reinstalled Windows 7 x64 from DVD to the fresh partition. Seemed fine. Ran Windows Update then restarted. FFFFFFFFF. Hangs in the same place. What can I do? Like I said, I already have rEFIt installed. Booting the Windows 7 install CD results in the same infinite loading error. I don't have a spare Snow Leopard disk handy.

• Apache stops responding to http requests -- https continues to work

  Okay. Very strange problem that I'm having here. I just recently updated to Apache 2.4.2 from 2.2.17, mostly to try to get name-based SSL VirtualHosts working (although they should have been working on 2.2.17). Server is Win2008 R2 (so x64 by definition) running with PHP 5.4.3 and MySQL 5.1.40 (outdated, I know). When I launch the server, it initially works fine. Responds to all requests, VirtualHosts all in order. However, after an uncertain amount of time (appears to only take a few minutes for the most part, but sometimes takes hours), it stops responding to regular HTTP requests (on any VirtualHost). HTTPS continues to work. No errors in the log, and nothing in the access logs when I attempt to connect. I'm having a hard time finding the source of this error given its intermittent nature. When removing all SSL-based VirtualHosts, it seemingly increased stability (still responding to HTTP requests twelve hours later). This could be mere coincidence, though. • Move an SSD with Windows 7 to a new PCIe SATA controller card

  This is my current setup: Abit AB9 QuadGT motherboard which has an Intel P965 chipset with Intel ICH8 SATA Rev. 2.0 controller Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD which supports SATA Rev. 3.0 Windows 7 Ultimate x64 For some reason I was unable to install Windows with the controller set in AHCI mode, even with the correct driver from Intel so it is currently in IDE mode. Due to the ICH8 controller being SATA Rev 2.0 and running in IDE mode, the SSD is operating well under it's published read/write speeds. I have ordered an Asus U3S6 controller card to add both SATA Rev. 3.0 and USB 3.0 to my computer. The motherboard does have a PCIe x4 slot available so I will hopefully achieve the full potential of my SSD. My question is this - am I able to swap the SSD over to the controller card from the motherboard controller without having to clean install Windows? I am hoping that all I will need to do is ensure that the controller card drivers are available to Windows and set the registry as per this KB article. Will this work or should I perform a clean installation?

• Distortion problem with Creative audio equalizer

  Hi, I have a problem with the Creative Console EQ, I don't know if it's fixable or not (is the EQ software or hardware on these cards?). Basically, I have enormous distortion with certain sounds in the 30 - 125 hz range. When this happens I get some sort of "frrzzzz" (sorry, I'm french and don't really know the correct english word for that) on top of the original sound. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy SE. I'm using the Daniel_K drivers, on Windows 7 Profesionnal x64. All the effects are disabled except EQ. Steps to reproduce Put the card in 24bit/96khz mode. The problem is also present with 16bit/48khz but seems to be less audible. In the Creative Console, use the following EQ: (full size) Play this sound at a reasonably high volume. You should hear distortion on the two "booms". Especially the second one. Disable Creative EQ. Play the sound in an application with an integrated EQ (e.g. foobar2000, ffdshow) using the same EQ parameters. There is no distortion. Conclusion: the Creative EQ is broken. Is anyone having the same problem? I'm also interested in the results with other Creative cards or even other brands soundcards with a similar EQ feature.

  Sometimes this dialog box will pop up (see screenshot below). Every time it appears I select "Keep the current color scheme, and don't show this message again". Windows then reminds me again -- either the next day or after reboot, or sometimes another 5 minutes later. Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance? Windows has detected your computer's performance is slow. This could be because there are not enough resources to run the Windows Aero color scheme. To improve performance, try changing the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic. Any change you make will be in effect until the next time you log on to Windows Change the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic Keep the current color scheme, but ask me again if my computer continues to perform slowly Keep the current color scheme, and don't show this message again Is there some reason why Windows is ignoring/forgetting my attempts to suppress the dialog? I'd love to never ever see it again, it's annoying, and it alt-tabs me out of fullscreen applications. If it matters, I'm running Windows 7 x64 Professional. I believe the dialog appears because I'm forcing Vsync and Triple Buffering for DirectX applications.

  I'm trying to get VPN access up and running. The company has a SonicWall firewall/concentrator and I'm working on a Mac. I'm not sure of the SonicWall's hardware or software level. My MacBook Pro is OS X 10.8, x64, fully patched. The Mac Networking applet claims the remote server is not responding. The connection attempt subsequently fails: This is utter bullshit, as a Wireshark trace shows the Protected Mode negotiation, and then the fallback to Quick Mode: I have two questions (1) does Mac OS X VPN work in real life? (2) Are there any trustworthy (non-Apple) tools to test and diagnose the connection problem (Wireshark is a cannon and I have to interpret the results)? And a third question (off topic): what is broken in Cupertino such that so much broken software gets past their QA department? EDIT (12/14/2012): The network guy sent me "VPN Configuration Guide" (Equinox document SonicOS_Standard-6-EN). It seems an IPSec VPN now requires a Firewall Unique Identifier. Just to be sure, I revisited RFC 2409, where Main Mode, Aggressive Mode, and Quick Mode are discussed. I cannot find a reference to Firewall Unique Identifier. I think I am screwed here: I am trying to connect to a broken (non-standard) firewall, with a broken Mac OS X client. Fortunately, I can purchase VPN Tracker Personal (a {SonicWall|Equinox}-authored client) for $129US from Equinox. So much for standards....

• How to play 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display?

  I use mpc-hc to play videos on Win7 x64. With the default settings (#1), video playback is great most of the time. But for panning shots, playback is not smooth. I stepped through the video frame by frame and found that the panning movement is smooth (e.g. each frame shifts horizontally by 10 pixels), so the problem is how the 23.976 fps video is interpolated to 60Hz. The judder looks like what would be caused by a "2:3 pulldown", where the frames are played unevenly like: frame 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, etc (#2) Using "optimal renderer settings" (#3) instead of the default disables the Aero theme and causes tearing. Setting my LCD display to 50Hz may have improved the judder slightly (but I can't really tell). My display does not support 24Hz or 48Hz, and forcing them in the Nvidia control panel gives blurry screen. I've tried other video players (VLC and KMPlayer), the ReClock Directshow Filter, video files from different sources (#4), turning on/off DXVA, and a computer with a different GPU, but the judder in the playback is similar. None of them solved the problem. So, how can I play 23.976 or 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display? I think a video player could make the video smoother by doing linear interpolation, such as: 1. 100% frame 1 2. 60% frame 1 + 40% frame 2 3. 20% frame 1 + 80% frame 2 4. 80% frame 2 + 20% frame 3 5. 40% frame 2 + 60% frame 3 6. 100% frame 3 7. 60% frame 3 + 40% frame 4 .. etc Can any existing video player do this? (#2) This example converts a 24 fps video into 30 fps (#3) View Renderer settings Reset Reset to optimal renderer settings (#4) The files I have are all H.264 mkv files, but I don't think the file format/encoding matters.

• Server 2003 and XP Client; Why are HTTP connections being silently dropped.

  On my network, my edge-router, a windows 2003 r2 server router with all the latest updates, will drop packets, but only under specific circumstances. I have troubleshot and isolated it down to the most simple configuration i can. There is NO NAT involved. Only fully-public IP addresses. No Firewalls are running either, all ahve been disabled. no packet filters on any interfaces anywhere either. I have a single Windows XP virtual machine and my edge-router(the windows 2003 r2 server, and also a virtual machine) running on a windows 2008 x64 r2 system (running virtual server 2005 as i dont have Intel-VT compatible chip yet). The edge router can access any external http site just fine, no issues. However the windows XP machine is only able to access certain sites. These work: www.google.com www.txstate.edu www.workintexas.com www.thedailywtf.com . These Dont: www.yahoo.com www.utexas.edu en.wikipedia.org slashdot.org www.bing.com. I have removed all possibility of DNS issues by connecting with net-cat from the XP box and sending GET /\r\nHost: \r\n\r\n and that connection replicates the issue as well. The network setup: My statically assigned IP block: x.x.x.168/29 DSL Modem -----PPPoE Connection---- x.x.x.169[EdgeRouter] [EdgeRouter]x.x.x.170 -----Virtual Ethernet----- x.x.x.174 [Test2] Test2's Default gateway is x.x.x.170 and test2 can ping any and every valid, accessible, public IP address with no packet loss what-so-ever. If i connect directly over PPPoE from test2 (the XP box) everything works just fine... Im at my wits end, i have NO IDEA whats causing this.

• Port 22 is not responding

  I'm trying to make the jump to VPS from shared hosting for better performances and greater flexibility, but am stuck with the fact that I can't access the machine via ssh. First of all, the machine is a CentOS 6.3 cPanel x64 with WHM 11.38.0. Sshd is running (it appears in the current running processes). Making a port scan I see that port 22 is not responding. Port 21 is, but I am not able to access the machine via ftp (I think it's a security measure, but I don't know where to disable/enable it). So, I'm stuck in WHM and have no way to access the configuration of the machine, neither via ssh nor with ftp/sftp. When trying to connect with ssh via Terminal I only get this: ssh: connect to host xx.xx.xxx.xxx port 22: Operation timed out I also tried to access with the hostname instead of the IP address and it's the same. There seem to be no firewall in WHM and I have whitelisted my home IP address to access ssh, though there were no restrictions in the first place. I have been wandering through all the settings and options in WHM for several hours now, but can't seem to find anything. Does anybody have a clue as to where I should start investigating? Update: Thanks everyone. It was in fact a matter of firewall. There was a firewall not controlled by the WHM software. I managed to crack into the console from the vps control panel (a terrible, terrible java app that barely took my keyboard input) and disabled the firewall altogether running service iptables stop so that I was able to access the console via ssh with the terminal. Now I will have to set up the firewall again because the command I ran looks like having completely wiped the iptables. Can you recommend any newby-friendly resource where I can learn how to go about this and what should I block? Or should I just go with something like this: http://configserver.com/cp/csf.html ? • Cannot Access Local Network Shares (Strange Schannel and lsass.exe issues)

  When I browse to my own computer's shares by going to \\MYCOMPUTERNAME\ ; I cannot access any of the shares on my LOCAL machine (nor can I access them remotely) and it generates about 40 of the following errors in my system event log: The following fatal alert was generated: 10. • Running Visual Studio 2010 in a University Campus

  We have just installed Windows 7 Enterprise x64 in one of our computer labs being used by students for programming. However, when we installed Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate on the machines, we found that to even launch the application (devenv.exe), required the student to enter the administrator password (the usual UAC prompt). Of course, we could just turn off UAC, but that would defeat the purpose of having it in Windows 7. On the other hand, we cannot really give the students local administrator privilege, as we are concerned that they will do some malicious stuff on the computers. Previously when we used Windows XP Professional running Visual Studio 2005, we had no problems. Kindly advise if there's any workaround for this. EDIT: Thanks for the answer guys. Mayank, your links may work for Visual Studio .Net, but it doesn't seem to work for Visual Studio 2010. Ryan, Tieson, I'm intrigued that you guys managed to get it working easily. FYI I don't manage the Group Policies, but I can get them changed if necessary. Any particular GP that I should be looking at? Suggestions to how to troubleshoot further why UAC is being invoked? At least now I know for sure that this is not supposed to be the default behaviour for Visual Studio 2010 so I'm going to keep digging for a solution. Will try running Procmon and see if i can find something..
