• Is Berkeley DB XML a viable database backend?

  Apparently, BDB-XML has been around since at least 2003 but I only recently stumbled upon it on Oracle's website: Berkeley DB XML. Here's the blurb: Oracle Berkeley DB XML is an open source, embeddable XML database with XQuery-based access to documents stored in containers and indexed based on their content. Oracle Berkeley DB XML is built on top of Oracle Berkeley DB and inherits its rich features and attributes. Like Oracle Berkeley DB, it runs in process with the application with no need for human administration. Oracle Berkeley DB XML adds a document parser, XML indexer and XQuery engine on top of Oracle Berkeley DB to enable the fastest, most efficient retrieval of data. To me it seems that the underlying ideas are technically sound and probably more mature than the newer document-based DBs like CouchDB or MongoDB. It has support for C, C++, Ruby and Perl, as far as I can determine. It even has HA-capabilities like automatic replication using a master/slave model with automatic election. However, I can't seem to find any projects that use it. Is there something fundamentally wrong with it? Is the license too onerous? Is it too complicated? Why is it not being used?

  Hello, I'm using Zend FW and wanted to make a feed reader. • Update table columns bound to NSArrayController

  Hi, I'm fairly new to the world of bindings in cocoa, and I'm having some troubles (perhaps/probably due to a misunderstanding). I have a singleton that contains an NSMutableArray called plugins, containing objects of class Plugin. It has a method called loadPlugins which adds objects to the plugins array. This may be called at any point. It's been added as an instance in Interface Builder. Also in IB is an NSObjectController, whose content outlet is connected to the singleton. There is also an NSArrayController, whose contentArray is bound to the NSObjectController (controller key is 'selection', model key path is 'plugins', object class name is 'Plugin'). And finally I have a table view with 2 columns, the values of which are bound to the NSArrayController's arrangedObjects, using keys of properties in the Plugin class. So far so standard (as far as I can tell from tutorials at least). My trouble is that when the loadPlugins method is called in the singleton, and objects are added to the plugins array, the table doesn't update to show the objects (unless loadPlugins is called before the nib is loaded). -reloadData called on the tableView doesn't do anything. Is there a way to tell the NSArrayController that the referenced array has been updated? I understand there is the -add: method for NSArrayController, which could be used in the loadPlugins, but this isn't desirable as I want to keep the singleton totally separate from the display aspect. This seems related to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1623396/refresh-cocoa-binding-nsarraycontroller-combobox The line: "editing the array behind the controller's back" seems to perhaps pinpoint the problem, but I would hope that it would be possible to have the singleton not know about the controller. • Silverlight 3 - Data Binding Position of a rectangle on a canvas

  Hi Everyone, I am currently trying to bind a collection of objects to a Canvas in Silverlight 3 using an ItemsControl as below: <ItemsControl x:Name="ctrl" ItemsSource="{Binding myObjectsCollection}"> <ItemsControl.ItemsPanel> <ItemsPanelTemplate> <Canvas></Canvas> </ItemsPanelTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemsPanel> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Rectangle Stroke="LightGray" Fill="Black" StrokeThickness="2" RadiusX="15" RadiusY="15" Canvas.Left="{Binding XAxis}" Height="25" Width="25"> </Rectangle> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> Unfortunately it seems the binding on the Canvas.Left is being ignored. From what i have learned here it would appear this is due to the items being placed inside a content presenter not the actual canvas i have specified in the items panel. Is there a way i can use data binding to determine the position of elements on a canvas?

• Programatically send SMS to email using Verizon Motorola Droid on Android

  Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew the proper way to send an SMS message to an e-mail address using Verizon's CDMA Motorola Droid phone. The internal messaging application appears to automagically do this. While 3rd party applications like SMSPopup don't seem to be able to properly reply to e-mail addresses unless you compose the message inside the messaging application. When the internal messaging application sends a SMS message there's a corresponding 'RIL_REQUEST_CDMA_SEND_SMS' entry in the logcat (adb logcat -b radio). When you send a SMS to an e-mail address it prints the same thing, so behind the scenes it looks as though it is sending an sms. The interesting thing is that if you look at the content provider sent box the messages are addressed to various 1270XX-XXX-XXXX numbers. On other services you can send e-mail addresses by sending a SMS to a predefined short sms number. And then formatting your SMS as emailaddress subject message i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_gateway#Carrier-Provided_SMS_to_E-Mail_Gateways For example, using T-mobile's number (500) you can send a SMS to an e-mail using the following: SmsManager smsMgr = SmsManager.getDefault(); smsMgr.sendTextMessage("500", null, "[email protected] message sent to an e-mail address from a SMS", null, null); Does anyone know if It is possible to programatically send SMS to email messages from a CDMA Android phone? Does Verizon actually send your replies as SMS messages or are they actually sent as MMS or normal http email messages? Any ideas about how to intercept what the raw message being sent to see what's going on? It might be possible that Verizon somehow generates a fake number temporarily tied to an e-mail address (since repeated messages are not sent to the same number). But, that seems pretty heavy handed. • Trouble pre-populating drop down and textarea from MySQL Database

  I am able to successfully pre-populate my questions using the following code: First Name: <input type="text" name="first_name" size="30" maxlength="20" value="' . $row[2] . '" /><br /> However, when I try to do the same for a drop down box and a textarea box, nothing is pre-populated from the database, even though there is actual content in the database. • Getting started with SVG graphics objects in JSF 2.0 pages.

  What I want to do is create web pages with interactive SVG content. I had this working as a Java desktop application using Batik to render my SVG and collect UI events like mouseclick. Now I want to use those SVG graphics files in my JSF (Primefaces) web application in the same way. Trying to get started, I found this didn't work: <h:graphicImage id="gloob" value="images/sprinkverks.svg" alt="Graphic Goes Here"/> I don't mind doing some reading to get up the learning curve. It was just a bit surprising that some google searches didn't turn up anything useful. What I did find suggested that I would have to do this with the f:verbatim tag as if I were hand-coding the HTML. I would then have to add some script to capture the SVG events and feed them back into the AJAX code. If I have to do all that I will, but I was hoping there would be an easier and automated way. So the questions are: How to get the image to render in the first place? How to get the DOM events from the SVG portion of the page back to the backing beans? Much thanks for any pointers.

• Strange rare out-of-order data received using Indy

  We're having a bizarre problem with Indy10 where two large strings (a few hundred characters each) that we send out one after the other are appearing at the other end intertwined oddly. This happens extremely infrequently. Each string is a complete XML message terminated with a LF and in general the READ process reads an entire XML message, returning when it sees the LF. The call to actually send the message is protected by a critical section around the call to the IOHandler's writeln method and so it is not possible for two threads to send at the same time. (We're certain the critical section is implemented/working properly). This problem happens very rarely. The symptoms are odd...when we send string A followed by string B what we received at the other end (on the rare occasions where we have failure) is the trailing section of string A by itself (i.e., there's a LF at the end of it) followed by the leading section of string A and then the entire string B followed by a single LF. We've verified that the "timed out" property is not true after the partial read - we log that property after every read that returns content. Also, we know there are no embedded LF characters in the string, as we explicitly replace all non-alphanumeric characters in the string with spaces before appending the LF and sending it. We have log mechanisms inside the critical sections on both the transmission and receiving ends and so we can see this behavior at the "wire". We're completely baffled and wondering (although always the lowest possibility) whether there could be some low-level Indy issues that might cause this issue, e.g., buffers being sent in the wrong order....very hard to believe this could be the issue but we're grasping at straws. Does anyone have any bright ideas?

• PHP, MySQL Per row output

  Been all over the place and spent 8 hours working loops and math...still cant get it... I am writing a CP for a customer. The input form will allow them to add a package deal to their web page. Each package deal is stored in mysql in the following format id header item1 item2 item3...item12 price savings The output is a table with 'header' being the name of the package and each item being 1 of the items in the package stored in a row within the table, then the price and amount saved (all of this is input via a form and INSERT statement by the customer, that part works) stored rows as well. Here is my PHP: include 'dbconnect.php'; $query = "SELECT * FROM md "; $result = mysql_query($query); while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { //Print 4 tables with header, items, price, savings //Go to next row (on main page) and print 4 more items //Do this until all tables have been printed } mysql_free_result($result); mysql_close($conn); ? Right now the main page is simpley a header div, main div, content wrap and footer div. Ideal HTML output of a 'package' table, not perfect and a little confusing $header $item1 $item2 ect... $price$savings I basically want the PHP to print this 4 times per row on the main page and then move to the next row and print 4 times and continue until there are no more items in the array. So it could be row 1 4 tables, row 2 4 tables, row 3 3 tables. Long, confusing and frustrating. I about to just do 1 item per row..please help Jake

  lanchpad.net states that for project Emle - Electronic Mathematics Laboratory Equipment 2.0 series is the current focus of development This is what I have done so far: Set the launchpad.net project to import from the sourceforge.net project Emle (this actually set the launchpad.net project to mirror the sourceforge.net project rather than just inport the content once) Examined the launchpad.net project to see that the three commits (#1 - #3) which were done in the sourceorge.net project previousley made it into launchpad.net. Used bzrto get the launchpad.net project which I did while is was still set for mirroring. Made three changes and commits using bzr (#4 - #6). Was unable to see the changes on the launchpad.net site. Requested the mirroring to be stopped (it did). Inside the function i call 2 other functions that use getJSON and POST (with json as a return object) to get some data.   I've recently read an interesting thread on the D newsgroup, which basically asks, Given two signed integers a ∈ [amin, amax], b ∈ [bmin, bmax], what is the tightest interval of a | b? I'm think if interval arithmetics can be applied on general bitwise operators (assuming infinite bits). The bitwise-NOT and shifts are trivial since they just corresponds to -1 − x and 2n x. But bitwise-AND/OR are a lot trickier, due to the mix of bitwise and arithmetic properties. Is there a polynomial-time algorithm to compute the intervals of bitwise-AND/OR? Note: Assume all bitwise operations run in linear time (of number of bits), and test/set a bit is constant time. The brute-force algorithm runs in exponential time. Because ~(a | b) = ~a & ~b and a ^ b = (a | b) & ~(a & b), solving the bitwise-AND and -NOT problem implies bitwise-OR and -XOR are done. Although the content of that thread suggests min{a | b} = max(amin, bmin), it is not the tightest bound. Just consider [2, 3] | [8, 9] = [10, 11].)

• Flash vs. Ajax Abilities

  Hey everyone. I want to develop an application that does a bunch of cool stuff. The first thing that I need in it is to get information about the page a person is browsing. With that said, I need for example to know how long a user stayed in a page and where was the scrollbar. While getting that data, It's all saved to a database. The thing is, I prefer doing that in Flash [although I have no experience in it] over Ajax since I want to hide the code - which as far as I know not possible in Javascript/Ajax. So, can I do all that in Flash? - Read the content of the page, get the status of the scroll bar.. Plus, I then need to go threw the gathered information that is saved in the database. Since there could be many calculations i thought C++ .Net is better than PHP [which I know better]. Is that all possible or am I just crazy? :) Thanks ahead.

  I am attempting to allow user to upload videos to Flickr from an Asp.net application using the FlickrNet library/API. I've obtained an API key and an API secret from Flickr. Additionally I am retrieving an authToken using the AuthGetFrob method from the FlickrNet library. • Looking for an elegant appwidget skin solution

  I have an appwidget application and would like to enable users to create skins which can be applied at runtime. My preferred solution is to use apk files with nine patch png images that stretch to fit the ImageView's of widget, however its starting to look like I might have to use another packaging technique (e.g. zip files). What I've tried: Importing nine patch resources as Drawable with context.getResourcesForApplication(my.app).getResources..., converting them to bitmaps using a canvas and setting the bitmap to the RemoteView using setImageViewBitap. This didn't work because I needed to specify the size of the resulting view (myBitmap.setBounds(..,..)) during conversion and some of the widths/heights in my appwidget aren't fixed. Perhaps there is a way to get the heights etc that I missed. Importing resources directly to the RemoteView using setImageViewUri() This doesn't work because the function doesn't seem to read android.resource:// Uri's anymore (I poked around in the ImageView source and it only seems to read files paths and content:// Uri's) Importing resources directly to the RemoteView using setImageViewResource() which didn't work because the id retrieved from the external package obviously doesn't include a package reference. What I'm trying to avoid is hard coding all my appwidget width's and height's, or using a separate packaging scheme. Has anyone implemented appwidget skins nicely and want to share the knowledge? Alternately there might be a hole in my logic somewhere that can be pointed out. I can provide code if required though I don't have any here right now.

• General Question About WPF Control Behavior and using Invoke

  I have been putting off activity on SO because my current reputation is "1337". :) This is a question of "why" and not "how". By default, it seems that WPF does not set focus to the first control in a window when it's opening. In addition, when a textbox gets focus, by default it does not have it's existing text selected. So basically when I open a window, I want focus on the first control of the window, and if that control is a textbox, I want it's existing text (if any) to be selected. I found some tips online to accomplish each of these behaviors, and combined them. The code below, which I placed in the constructor of my window, is what I came up with: Loaded += (sender, e) => { MoveFocus(new TraversalRequest(FocusNavigationDirection.Next)); var textBox = FocusManager.GetFocusedElement(this) as TextBox; if (textBox != null) { Action select = textBox.SelectAll; //for some reason this doesn't work without using invoke. • incorporate simple vimeo video request with jquery carousel

  Hi, I did a tutorial for a jquery carousel that scrolls a ul. At the moment the ul is hardcoded, but I want to use a simple call to vimeo api to bring in the videos for a certain user into the carousel. I have uploaded my code here: http://www.welchcreative.co.uk/wp-content/infinitecarouselvimeo.zip My problem is that I don't know where I should put the code for the simple vimeo call, because at the moment, I think that the problem is that the vimeo videos load after the jquery stuff because it uses window.onload rather than document ready and I can't seem to work out how to put the two and two together. Ideally, 1. the code loads the vimeo videos first and puts them in a ul wiht the correct classes. 2. the carousel code then acts on the list above. in that order. I hope that isn't too vague.   Using the sample app for rpx_now gem ( http://github.com/grosser/rpx_now_example) on localhost:3000, I have successfully logged in via Google Accounts, myOpenID, Yahoo, but cannot make it via Facebook. In the RPX app/widget settings I have set my facebook-app key and secret. In my facebook app settings, the Connect URL is myappname.rpxnow.com. But when I try to connect, then I don't even see a facebook login page, just a number of redirects and I am back to my localhost with the following exception http://gist.github.com/386520 . Before I was successfully connecting with oauth2 gem, however, without fetching user data - only authentication. That time I set only key/secret and localhost as my Connect URL. Currently, I don't even ask for email etc., but still the same problem. Can it happen because rpx_now cannot get requested user data from facebook? Or it is a problem of facebook key/secret? May be I need to provide more settings of my facebook app? • Add KO "data-bind" attribute on $(document).ready

  Preface I've rarely ever been a JS developer and this is my first attempt at doing something with Knockout.js. The question to follow likely illustrates both points. Backgound I have a fairly complex MVC3 application that I'm trying to get to work with KO (v2.0.0.0). My MVC app is designed to generically control which fields appear in the view (and how they are added to the view). It makes use of partial views to decide what to draw in the view based on the user's permissions (If the user is in group A then show control A, if the user in group B then show control B or possibly if the user is in group A don't include the control at all). Also, my model is very flat so I'm not sure the built-in ability to apply my ViewModel to a specific portion of the view will help. My solution to this problem is to provide an action in my controller that responds with an object in JSON format with that contains the JQuery selector and the content to assign to the "data-bind" attribute and bind the ViewModel to the View in the $(document).ready event using the values provided. Failed Proof-of-concept My first attempt at proving that this works doesn't actually seem to work, and by "doesn't work" I mean it just doesn't bind the values at all (as can be seen in this jsfiddle). I've tried it with the applyBindings inside of the ready event and not, but it doesn't seem to make any bit of difference. Question What am I doing wrong? Or is this just not something that can work with KO (though I've seen at least one example online doing the same thing and it supposedly works)? Like I said in the preface, I've only ever pretended to be a JS developer (though I've generally gotten it to work in the past) so I'm at a loss where to start trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Hopefully this isn't a real noob question.
