• jqGrid using a servlet to store the data, how to access the data from a different java class

  I'm using jqGrid for a table input and setting up the url as a servlet which will deal with the GET and POST requests and save the rows to a Java object. I'm using webwork web framework and I was wondering how I can get access to the object that the servlet is saving the data to. One way I have thought of is to just call the GET method from the Java action class which the servlet will return a JSON string with the object data. Is there a better design for doing this? This is probably not too clear so ask questions so I can help get across my point. Thanks

• What is the advantage of WSDualHttpBinding in WCF?

  How much benefit would there be to using WSDualHttpBinding with IIS hosted service vs. a client poll that calls the WCF service, assuming in the latter the service cached the data in question? This scenerio would be for a notify type of service where the clients need to be notified by the service when an event occurs. Specifically, what advantages would WSDualHttpBinding provide over polling? ie: Less network traffic, faster to design, easier to maintain, more control ??? From what i understand, WSDualHttpBinding is less scalable than client polling, so why use it at all? Edit: As Matt supplied, time critical can be one reason for the duplex binding. Here is what i have so far: WSDualHttpBinding adv: can get immediate response w/o waiting on polling timer dis: less scalable than WsHttpBinding dis: less firewall friendly I'll add to this based on comments, please let me know if i state anything incorrectly. thanks for you input :-)

  Hi all: This is uni homework so sorry about :my password protected url Please enter usersame as "uts" and password as "10479475", without the wrapper quotes. It it almost completed, please follow simple steps to see where my problem dwells: step1: click on any continent highlighted on world map; step2: click on any city marked on continent map; step3: enter quantity ranging from 1 to 6 into the upper-right table; step4 : there you go, in the table below, once row is equal or greater than 3, then the size of table starts to "overlap" on top of the footer section and continues to grow, which is not what I want. I want to achieve the effect that the table size has a limited max-height, so once actual height exceeds the threshold, then I can have a vertical scroll bar so to "stack up" my table and not to break the overall structure. It turns out that my lazy initial design now gets myself stuck in a problem... Any suggestion and hint on how to get this?

  Hello, I'm trying to design a tab control which will have a tabs on left hane hand side, and will have a text displayed vertically besides it. And will have the Page displayed in the main tab control. For reference you can visit : http://www.nseindia.com/ and click on any tab in the main menu. How can it be designed? I have created a style in App.xaml since it would be applicable to all tabs. But I'm not sure how to get the control's name in the page I would be using. Thanks.

• Syntax error on token "QUOTE", VariableDeclaratorId expected after this token

  I've posted a bigger chunk of the code below. You can see that initially QUOTE was procedural- coded in place. I'm trying to learn how to use declarative design so I want to do the same thing but by using resources. It seems like I need to access the string.xml thru the @R.id tag and identify QUOTE with that string value. But I don't know enough to negotiate this. Any tips? Ideally I'd like an application architecture that will permit me to develop an app using a lightweight reference GUI/kit and focus on non gui aspects to produce a quality app which is GUI enabled/friendly. I would want APP and the GUI to be sufficiently decoupled to maximize the ease for you GUI experts to plug the app into to some target GUI design/framework/context. e.g. targets such as: termcap GUI, web app GUI framework, desktop GUI, thin client GUI. In short: How do I mostly ignore the GUI, but avoid painting you into a corner when I don't even know who you are yet?

• micro-SD card initialization using SPI interface

  I'm using a micro-SD card in an embedded design. The card is connected to a microcontroller using the SPI interface. It worked fine for all cards I've used before, but now my new card will not initialize. The card is a Transcend 2GB micro-SD card (TS2GUSD). After sending the initial clock train to switch to SPI mode I do the following: 1) CMD0 (Argument 0, CRC 0x95) - Response 0x01 - OK 2) CMD8 (Argument 0x000001AA, CRC 0x87) - Response 0x01 0x000001AA - Means it's SDC V2+ card, the Voltage range 2.7V~3.6V is supported - OK Then I should send the ACMD41 command, but when sending the CMD55 (argument 0, CRC 0) that must precede CMD41, I get response 0x05 - Illegal Command. I've also tried to send CMD1 (for MMC cards), but it gives a similar Illegal Command response. The code works fine with my Sandisk 2GB micro-SD card. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks, -Ron-

  I am trying to support UTF-8 characters in my ANT script. As long as the character string are made up of 2-byte UTF-8 characters, such as: Lògìñ Ùsèr ÌÐ Then things work fine. When I use Unicode Han Character: ? Which, according to this site: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/6211/index.htm Has a UTF-8 encoding of 0xE6 0x88 0x91 I can see in UltraEdit, my input properties file has the values "E6 88 91" all in a row, so I'm fairly confident that my input is correct. And When I open the same file in Notepad++ I can see all the characters correctly. • Dynamic programming - Coin change decision problem?

  I'm reviewing some old notes from my algorithms course and the dynamic programming problems are seeming a bit tricky to me. I have a problem where we have an unlimited supply of coins, with some denominations x1, x2, ... xn and we want to make change for some value X. We are trying to design a dynamic program to decide whether change for X can be made or not (not minimizing the number of coins, or returning which coins, just true or false). I've done some thinking about this problem, and I can see a recursive method of doing this where it's something like... MakeChange(X, x[1..n this is the coins]) for (int i = 1; i < n; i++) { if ( (X - x[i] ==0) || MakeChange(X - x[i]) ) return true; } return false; Converting this a dynamic program is not coming so easily to me. How might I approach this?

• Calling WCF Service from Action Script 2

  Hi All, I am a .NET programmer working with a Flash designer on a project. The design is that they will create a flash UI (implemented with AS2) to present a questionnaire. After it is completed by an end user, the will send me (a .net web service of some form) the answers to the questionnaire, I will perform a calculation, and I will send a response back (the response will likely be a single integer, though it may be a touple of (integer score, string description). Neither myself nor the designer is knowledgeable of Action Script. Does anyone have a snippet for such web service calls in AS2? Are there any soap libraries for AS2 that we could use, or should I expose a RESTful interface? Can it be as simple as having the designer concat the questionnaire answers into the query string of the service URL? What would be a typical data format for my response (xml, json, plain text) Thanks in advance for your help. Frank

• Delphi connection to OpenEdge Progress-4GL Database

  Folks: Has anyone had success connecting to a Progress-4GL database with Delphi?   I've been unable to establish any connection with the ODBC driver provided by the vendor (Progress OpenEdge 10.1C Driver). I've entered (what I believe are) the right parameters, but keep on getting an error whenever I test the connection: "[DataDirect][ODBC Progress OpenEdge Wire Protocol driver] Socket closed." Background: I've been tasked to re-design a 13-year-old application, but the original programmer did not provide any supporting documents, passwords, configuration setup, etc. (I'm on my own)!   To make things worse, online help and useful documentation about Progress is scarce (I had never heard about this database until now). I want to examine the existing data, maybe create an ERD to familiarize myself with the schema, but I can't even access the data outside of the OpenEdge code. Any help is appreciated!

• Where to use Controller.HttpContext

  Hi, In my base controller's constructor I am calling an extension method that checks for specific cookies on the client. Currently I am using System.Web.HttpContext.Current to get the current context. However, I am lead to believe that I should be using Controller.HttpContext since it is more testable and contains additional information about the request. However, Controller.HttpContext returns null on creation (believe this is by design) but also on Initialize and Execute methods (unless I use Routing.RequestContext.HttpContext?). So if I should be using Controller.HttpContext instead of HttpContext.Current, at what point is it available to me in a request? Thanks Ben

• Minimax algorithm: Cost/evaluation function?

  Hi guys, A school project has me writing a Date game in C++ (example at http://www.cut-the-knot.org/Curriculum/Games/Date.shtml) where the computer player must implement a Minimax algorithm with alpha-beta pruning. Thus far, I understand what the goal is behind the algorithm in terms of maximizing potential gains while assuming the opponent will minify them. However, none of the resources I read helped me understand how to design the evaluation function the minimax bases all it's decisions on. All the examples have had arbitrary numbers assigned to the leaf nodes, however, I need to actually assign meaningful values to those nodes. Intuition tells me it'd be something like +1 for a win leaf node, and -1 for a loss, but how do intermediate nodes evaluate? Any help would be most appreciated.

• Using MS ReportViewer in WPF

  I'm about to start using the MS ReportViewer in a WPF application by placing the ReportViewer in a WindowsFormsHost. Is this the correct approach? What is the best way of designing the reports as you cannot use the ReportViewer at design time in a WindowsFormsHost. Is it best to create an RDL report in SQL Server and then convert it to an RDLC or maybe to create a new Winforms app to create an RDLC file in a WinForms framework and then copy it to the WPF app. I will need to filter the reports via dropdowns so there's that aspect to consider too. If anyone out there is already using ReportViewer in WPF I would appreciate some feedback on the best approach.....Many thanks.

• WPF: IEditableCollectionView and CanAddNew and empty collections

  We were having some issues with the wpf datagrid and IEditableCollectionView (although this question applies to using IEditableCollectionView and ItemsControl) When you have a collection with no items in it, the IEditableCollectionView cannot determine what items should be inserted so it sets CanAddNew=false we found a solution here (buried deep in the comments) that goes like so : If you derive from ObservableCollection like this public class PersonsList : ObservableCollection<Person> { } you will find out that if the initial collection is empty, there won't be a NewItemPlaceHolder showing up on the view. That's because PersonsList cannot resolve type T at design time. A workaround that works for me is to pass type T as a parameter into the class like this PersonsList<T> : ObservableCollection<T> where T : Person { } This approach will place the NewItemPlaceHolder even if the collection is empty. I'm wondering if there is an interface i can implement on my collections that inform the IEditableCollectionView which type to create should i get an AddNew request.

  Hi there, I am running a SSAS cube that stores facts of HTTP requests. The is a column "Time Taken" that stores the milliseconds a particular HTTP request took. Like... RequestID Time Taken -------------------------- 1 0 2 10 3 20 4 20 5 2000 I want to provide a report through Excel that shows the distribution of those timings by percentage of requests. A statement like "90% of all requests took less than 20millisecond". Analysis: 100% <2000 80% <20 60% <20 40% <10 20% <=0 I am pretty much lost what would be the right approach to design aggregations, calculations etc. to offer this analysis through Excel. Any ideas?   I've chosen JQuery as my JavaScript library but now I'm a bit frustrated by the JQuery plugin site... the site kinda sucks... the plugin area isn't designed very well and I can only find a few treeviews. The one with the most votes (link text) isn't supported anymore. Can someone please point me to an industrial strength treeview? Desired Features: 1. stable 2. async / ajax would be nice 3. drag and drop nodes would be nice I've been delighted so far with JQueryUI--nice design. But, how come it doesn't come with a standard tree view? Pete
