is there a Java GUI for dummies ?

Hello, first I want to apologize about my english, it may be not clear enough. Well, I'm new to Java programming, and I search over this web about use of Swing, AWT, 2D, etc. but I didn't get the answer I was looking for. I want to know about a book or method to learn Java GUI programming (not even sure this is a propper term). Previous answers guide me to Filthy Rich Clients by Romain Guy and also to The Swing Tutorial in Sun Web Page. and No offense, but...the first one seems too complex and the second one a bit disorganize. so I ask about a more "for dummies" method. Thanks EDIT: Thanks everyboy, you're very kind and serious. I want to clear some things that I didn't state for being my first question. I dont' want to use autogenerated code(Don't want to say why only focus on my question for consistency) Also I've read Deitel & Deitel and it's a good beginners book but it seems to me that doesn't cover layout(and other details) Finally, I tried to read netbeans generated code but it's a mess find method by method and function by function the way that the IDE does it I hope this edition helps to solve my question

Use of Java [Interfaces / Abstract classes]

Hello, Lately i decided to take a look at Java so i am still pretty new to it and also to the approach of OO programming, so i wanted to get some things straight before learning more, (i guess it's never to soon to start with good practices). I am programming a little 2D game for now but i think my question applies to any non trivial project. For the simplicity i'll provide examples from my game. I have different kinds of zombies, but they all have the same attributes (x, y, health, attack etc) so i wrote an interface Zombie which i implement by WalkingZombie, RunningZombie TeleportingZombie etc. Is this the best thing to do? Am i better of with an abstract class? Or with a super class? (I am not planning to partially implement functions - therefor my choice for an interface instead of an abstract class) I have one class describing the main character (Survivor) and since it is pretty big i wanted to write an interface with the different functions, so that i can easily see and share the structure of it. Is it good practice? Or is it simply a waste of space and time? I hope this question will not be rated as subjective because i thought that experienced programmers won't disagree about this kind of topic since the use of interfaces / super classes / abstract classes follows logical rules and is thereby not simply a personal choice. Web service failing when installed in seperate project from the website...

I am totally new to web services and cannot get mine to work. My setup is on VS 2008 using IIS. I have one solution file with 3 projects in it: website, code, and services. If I put my webservice into my website and call it locally then it will work fine (it's just a hello world web service). I want to put the service into a different location for use from multiple sites. I don't know what I'm doing wrong - i've read so much conflicting info regarding disco files, access files, silverlight, flash, java, etc. I just looking for quick simple steps to create a web service that I can access from javascript and deploy to a seperate website. End goal is to have functionality in webservices so that website will call via JS and run much smoother in the loading time and async calls. Do I need to create a disco file? Do I need to configure security? -- I know this is prob best, i'm just looking to get it working at all. Do I need to allow cross browser access on IIS or on my hosted server? Are there any quick reference websites that you can recommend? Should I be using WCF as new technology? - I saw this on MSDN but seems to be more for windows apps then web apps. I'm not getting any specific error codes. I have installed the firefox debugging tools (firebug) and I can see what the headers are but I don't know how to interpret them and there is no response being passed back. Any help is appreciated!!!

C++: Vector of objects vs. vector of pointers to new objects?

Hello, I am seeking to improve my C++ skills by writing a sample software renderer. It takes objects consisting of points in a 3d space and maps them to a 2d viewport and draws circles of varying size for each point in view. Which is better: class World{ vector<ObjectBaseClass> object_list; public: void generate(){ object_list.clear(); object_list.push_back(DerivedClass1()); object_list.push_back(DerivedClass2()); or... class World{ vector<ObjectBaseClass*> object_list; public: void generate(){ object_list.clear(); object_list.push_back(new DerivedClass1()); object_list.push_back(new DerivedClass2()); ?? Would be using pointers in the 2nd example to create new objects defeat the point of using vectors, because vectors automatically call the DerivedClass destructors in the first example but not in the 2nd? Are pointers to new objects necessary when using vectors because they handle memory management themselves as long as you use their access methods? Now let's say I have another method in world: void drawfrom(Viewport& view){ for (unsigned int i=0;i<object_list.size();++i){ object_list.at(i).draw(view); } } When called this will run the draw method for every object in the world list. Let's say I want derived classes to be able to have their own versions of draw(). Would the list need to be of pointers then in order to use the method selector (-) ?

NULL pointer comparison fails

Hello, I'm initializing in a class a pointer to be NULL. Afterwards I check if it is NULL in the same class. But it's not always 0x0. Sometimes it's 0x8 or 0xfeffffff or 0x3f800000 or 0x80 or other strange stuff. In most case the pointer is 0x0 but sometimes it gets altered somehow. I'm sure that I'm not changing it anywhere in my code. Is there a way it gets changed by "itself"? Here's my code: MeshObject::MeshObject() { mesh.vertexColors = NULL; } MeshObject::MeshObject(const MeshObject &_copyFromMe) { SimpleLog("vertexColors pointer: %p", _copyFromMe.mesh.vertexColors); if (_copyFromMe.mesh.vertexColors != NULL) { SimpleLog("vertexColors"); this->mesh.vertexColors = new tColor4i[_copyFromMe.mesh.vertexCount]; memcpy(this->mesh.vertexColors, _copyFromMe.mesh.vertexColors, _copyFromMe.mesh.vertexCount * sizeof(tColor4i) ); } } My application crashes, because vertexColors wasn't initialized and is being copied. Hello! I have a class in c++ in order to write log files for an application of mine. I have already built the class and it works, it is something like this: class Logger { std::string _filename; public: void print(std::string tobeprinted); } Well, it is intuitive that, in order to print a line in the log file, for an object of Logger, it is simply necessary to do the following: Logger mylogger("myfile.log"); mylogger.print(std::string("This is a log line")); Well. Using a method approach is not the same as using a much better pattern like << is. I would like to do the following: Logger mylogger("myfile.log"); mylogger << "This is a log line"; That's all. I suppose I must overload the << operator... But overloading using this signature (the classic one): ostream& operator<<(ostream& output, const MyObj& o); But I do not have a ostream... So, should I do as follows? Logger& operator<<(Logger& output, const std::string& o); Is this the right way? Thanks

Logging in to Wordpress through CodeIgniter DX Authentication

Hello All, I'm about to start a very large project of rebuilding my companies intranet. The plan is to have most of the intranet live in a CI application. I chose to use CI because i'm very familiar with all the CI methods. Some sections of the intranet are going to be wordpress blogs. For example the Human Resources Dept. and the Marketing Dept will have their own wordpress blogs. Ideally my plan is to log on to the intranet, with a CI authentication library like DXAuth by querying the Active Directory of the company. When I return the AD information for the user I will by saving their group memberships into a session. It would be fantastic if I could have that session information of the user be used by wordpress to log the user as an editor if they are a member of the Marketing Group. And allow users who are not members of the group be able to comment on that blog, with out logging into wordpress. My question is if there are any CI classes or Wordpress Plugins, or tutorals out there, of this sort of integration with the two systems. Thank you for your help!

Hello all I'm trying to create a page where a list of items are displayed in a row where there are multiple columns on the left, but only one on the right, encased within a horizontialFieldManager. Currently I have the following code to attempt to do the following: VerticalFieldManager mainScreenManager = new VerticalFieldManager(); mainScreenManager.add(titleField); for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { HorizontalFieldManager itemAreaManager = new HorizontalFieldManager(); VerticalFieldManager itemTextFieldsAreaManager = new VerticalFieldManager(); itemTextFieldsAreaManager.add(new RichTextField(contentArticleTitle[i])); itemTextFieldsAreaManager.add(new RichTextField(contentArticleDate[i])); itemTextFieldsAreaManager.add(new SeparatorField()); itemAreaManager.add(itemTextFieldsAreaManager); itemAreaManager.add(new ButtonField("", 0)); mainScreenManager.add(itemAreaManager); }; add(mainScreenManager); Now the issue I'm experiencing is probably obvious to those familiar with managers; the horizontialFieldManager has the first item added to it consuming the entire width available, thereby never showing the button. What I'm wondering is how can I tell this in an extended class to only take up a certain percentage of the available width? I've tried subLayout and setting the width to be a certain amount, but it will just show the button instead of the text (pretty much same problem, just reversed)

Accessing my own datalayer using RIA & Silverlight

Is it possible for me to connect to my own data provide via WCF RIA services? I've created a small datalayer that connnects to DynamicAX datasource. I would like to use Silverlight 4 & RIA service to access that datalayer. At it's most basic -I've done the following... 1) I've added an empty domainclass to the webproject and in that class I created a simple method to return a string... [EnableClientAccess()] public class ProjectService : DomainService { public string TestViaRIA() { return "Hello!"; } } 2) I then added reference to the web project in my silvelight class and created a bit of code to try and invoke the method... using ProjectApp.Web; namespace ProjectApp.Views { public partial class ProjectControl : UserControl { public ProjectControl() { InitializeComponent(); ProjectContext ctx = new ProjectContext(); var x = ctx.TestViaRIA(); testTextBox.Text = x.ToString(); } } } the returned value is "{System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.InvokeOperation}". I'm obviously doing something wrong here and I would appreciate some guidance on how I can achive this. Thanks in advance

jquery an div tags used in a ordered list

hello everyone, i'm not sure where my errors are lying but here is my scenario... i have an un-ordered list in html that handles my main link bar... <ul id="navlist"> <li><a href="/" id="current">home</a></li> <li><a href="#" id="search">search</a></li> <li><a href="#" id="users">login</a></li> </ul> and what i want done is to call each id and have jQuery handle each and dislpay it where specified in my css file... for now, lets just ignore my "home" link... here is a snippet of my inline jquery $(document).ready(function() { $("a").click(function () { $("div#login").slideToggle("fast"); }); }) Now, whichever div i specify, it calls that ... however it will only call one div, using either from the un-orderd list, as mentioned above in the html. My Goal is to call a search bar when search is clicked, and to call a login box when login is clicked. to my knowledge (noob), i believe use an as a class, however that is what brings me here. i believe my error is in my jquery and not my css, as stated above, either instance will be displayed when the jquery function calls either tag. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance shan2on

Zend_Router requirements mismatch

Hello you all: I have two routes that match a url with the same apparent pattern, the difference lies in the $actionRoute, this should only be matched if the variable :action on it equals 'myaction'. If I go to /en/mypage/whatever/myaction it goes as expected through $actionRoute. If I go to /en/mypage/whatever/blahblah it gets rejected by $actionRoute and matched by $genRoute. If I go to /en/mypage/whatever it should be matched by $genRoute but it gets matched by $actionRoute instead throwing and exception because the action noactionAction() does not exist. MySQL + Joomla + remote c# access

Hello, I work on a Joomla web site, installed on a MySQL database and running on IIS7. It's all working fine. I now need to add functionality that lets (Joomla-)registered users change some configuration data. Though I haven't done this yet, it looks straightforward enough to do with Joomla. The data is private so all external access will be done through HTTPS. I also need an existing c# program, running on another machine, to read that configuration data. Sure enough, this data access needs to be as fast as possible. The data will be small (and filtered by query), but the latency should be kept to a minimum. A short-term, client-side cache (less than a minute, in case a user updates his configuration data) seems like a good idea. I have done practically zero database/asp programming so far, so what's the best way of doing that last step? Should the c# program access the database 'directly' (using what? LINQ?) or setup some sort of Facade (SOAP?) service? If a service should be used, should it be done through Joomla or with ASP on IIS? Thanks

In the jsp file, I need to check if my firstName parameter has a value or not. If the firstName parameter is set, I need to display some html in the jsp file. If it is not set, I need to display different html in the jsp file. Qt: How to use QTimer to print a message to a QTextBrowser every 10 seconds?

Hello, I have working at this for hours and cannot figure it out nor can I find any help online that works. Basically the gist of what I am trying to accomplish is to have a Qt GUI with a button and a QTextBrowser. When I push the button I want it to diplay a message and then keep printing this message every 10 seconds. I figured I would use QTimer because it makes sense to have a timer to diplay the message every 10 seconds. When I originally implemented this into my buttonClicked() SLOT it caused the program to freeze. I looked online for a solution and found QApplication::processEvents(). So basically in my function I had something like this: while(1) { QTimer *timer; connect(...) //omitted parameters for this example timer.start(10000); ui->diplay->append("Message"); while(timer.isActive()) { QApplication::processEvents() } } I figured it would break out of the timer.isActive() while loop but it won't it simply stays in there. So I figured this is a threading issue. So I figured out how to use QThreads but I still can't get it to work. Basically when I create a thread with a timer on it and the thread tells the timer to start, the program closes and the console says "The program has unexpectedly finished". There has to be an easy way to do this but my track record with Qt has always been that th

How can I use a value of JSP in Javascript code?

Hello, I have a list of elements, each of them appeared in my page through jsp. So I have this: <div id="title"><%= list.get(ind).getTitle() %></div> When I display the elements, as this tag is in for loop, I get everything right. Now I what to place a button for deleting each of this elements. What I have done is: <input type="submit" name="submit" onclick="deleteNewsFunction();" id="submit_btn"/> In the deleteNewsFunction() I just want to print the data. <script> function deleteNewsFunction(){ var item = $('#title').val(); alert(item); } </script> The problem is that the title var gets always the first item even if I am clicking on the button of the second item. I was thinking that maybe a solution is to add the "list.get(ind).getTitle()" as a parameter in the function like deleteNewsFunction(<%=list.get(ind).getTitle()%) but then it did not work at all. Read large amount of data from file in Java

Hello I've got text file that contains 1 000 002 numbers in following formation: 123 456 1 2 3 4 5 6 .... 999999 100000 Now I need to read that data and allocate it to int variables (the very first two numbers) and all the rest (1 000 000 numbers) to an array int[]. It's not a hard task, but - it's horrible slow. My first attempt was java.util.Scanner: Scanner stdin = new Scanner(new File("./path")); int n = stdin.nextInt(); int t = stdin.nextInt(); int array[] = new array[n]; for (int i = 0; i < n; i++) { array[i] = stdin.nextInt(); } It works as excepted but it takes about 7500 ms to execute. I need to fetch that data in up to several hundred of milliseconds. Then I tried java.io.BufferedReader: Using BufferedReader.readLine() and String.split() I got the same results in about 1700 ms, but it's still too many. Java/Python: Integration, problem with looping updating text

Hello! Basically I have a script in Python that grabs the text from an open window using getWindowText() and outputs it to the screen. The python loops so as the text in the window changes, it outputs the changes, so the output of the python will always be up to date with the window text. I'm trying to access this text in my Java program by executing the python script as a process and reading the text it outputs using a buffered reader. For some reason this works fine for the first block of text, but will not read any more after this, it wont read any updates to the text as the python outputs it. Can someone shed some light on this?
