  • Linq To Sql - SQL Default Constraint Problem

    I have a USER table in database. The table has a RegistrationDate column which has a default constraint as GETDATE(). When using LINQ, I don't provide any data for RegistrationDate column to make it default. But SQL Server raises error. I think LINQ tries to insert NULL into the column. How can I make LINQ not to try to insert in the column RegistrationDate, because it has default value?

    I am considering using MongoDB (mongo-mapper) for a portion of my rails application. I am not ready to go whole hog MongoDB because there are too many useful gems that depend on a traditional DB. That being said there are parts of my application that would be great to leverage a document database. Has anyone had success mixing the two approaches? But I found now information about getting the name of the user (in my GWT Project), which is logged in.     Hi, I'm developing a Rails application with Rspec for unit testing. Weeks ago, Rspec used to migrate the database to the last version automatically when executing 'rake spec', but now it doesn't do it automatically, I have to implement everything for myself. This happens in test environment, because my development data doesn't desappear. Is my fault? I didn't change anything, I think :) Thanks in advance.

    I have a bash script that runs on our shared web host. It does a dump of our mysql database and zips up the output file. Sometimes the mysqldump process gets killed, which leaves an incomplete sql file that still gets zipped. How do I get my script to 'notice' the killing and then delete the output file if the killing occurred?

    HOWEVER! would setting the $link to my database be one thing that I prolly should use a GLOBAL scope for? In my setting of (lots of functions)...it seems as though having only one variable that is on the global scope would be wise.   • How to communicate between Client and Server in a Client-Server Application?

    I would like to implement an Client-Server Application, where the business-logic, security validations and a database are at the server and the user interface are at the client. I would like to implement clients in different languages i.e. one in WPF/.NET, one Swing/Java , one in Android/Java and maybe one HTML/JavaScript client. The server will be on Internet, so I would like to be able to have encrypted communication. The client will send some lists of items to be added to the database, or update items, and do some transactions. The server will check if the items are already updated by another client, or update the item, add new items or delete items. How do I solve the communication between clients and the server in such a system? I have been thinking about: http/https webserver, and sending messages in JSON or XML and use Web Sockets for bi-directional communication. Use http in a RESTful way, except when WebSockets are needed. But I guess there are better solutions for native desktop applications than http? CORBA - I have just heard about it, and it's old and complex. Not much talk about it these days. XMPP/Jabber - I have just heard about it and I don't know if it fits me at all. EJabberd seams to be a popular implementation. AMQP - I have just heard about it and I don't know if it fits me at all. RabbitMQ seams to be a popular implementation. Windows Communication Foundation, Java RMI, Java Message Service - but are they language independent? I guess some of these alternatives are on different levels, maybe I can have i.e xmpp or amqp in web sockets over https? What technologys are used for this problem in companies today? and what is recommended to use? I have no experience of them other than webservers and http. Please give me some guidance in this jungle. What are the pros and cons of these technologies in my situation?

    I'm working with a database that has a bunch of serial numbers that are prefixed with leading 0's. So a serial number can look like 00032432 or 56332432. Problem is with PHP I don't understand how the conversion system with octals works. A specific example is that I'm trying to convert and compare all of these integer based numbers with strings. Is it possible to convert an octal, such as 00234 to a string like "00234" so that I can compare it?

    I have to insert new records in a database every day from a text file ( tab delimited). I'm trying to make this into a stored procedure with a parameter for the file to read data from. CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.UpdateTable @FilePath BULK INSERT TMP_UPTable FROM @FilePath WITH ( FIRSTROW = 2, MAXERRORS = 0, FIELDTERMINATOR = '\t', ROWTERMINATOR = '\n' ) RETURN Then i would call this stored procedure from my code (C#) specifying the file to insert. This is obviously not working, so how can i do it ?
