• Self updating application install with WIX?

  I am writing an application that needs to be installed on a large number of desktops and also needs to update itself. We are looking at WIX for creating the installation. I have used ClickOnce and it is not a good solution for this install. WIX seems to fit, but there is no good process for auto update that I have found. I have looked at ClickThrough, but it doesn't seem ready for prime time yet. Does anyone have another good solution to use with WIX (or maybe another install program) to auto update an application install?

In the java aplication we make and run some objects in main(class and method) and use them while program is running. for example an object that hold a collection of data that will be needed for all user requests. My question is: How can i create and hold such objects and data that should be available for all users and clients.

  What is the difference between a rules engine and an expert system? Example1: Let's say that I have a program that determines the expiration date of a new driver's license. It takes inputs like visa expiration date, passport number, birthday, etc. It determines the expiration date of the driver's license from this input. It can even give an error if the input did not have enough valid identifications to allow a new driver's license. Example2: Let's say I am making an online version of the game Monopoly. I want the ability to change the rules of the game (say $400 for passing go or no one can buy properties until they land on the same property twice, etc). I have a module in the code to handle these rules. Are these both rules engines or are they expert systems? They both seem so similar. Is it just a synonym?

  Hi, recently I discovered that "executing" a C program as a release build instead of a debug build optimizes the code and makes it run much faster. This is accessed through project properties configuration manager menu. I would like to know if this feature is the same in the professional version and the express edition of MVS 2010 in terms of speed optimization. I have the express edition. Also, I would like to know if C programs run with the same speed as in both the professional and express editions. • Matlab postpones disp calls when doing demanding calculations why is that?

  I am implementing an algorithm in Matlab. Among other things it calculates shortest paths etc. so its quite demanding for my old computer. I've put out disp calls through out the program to see what's happening all the time. However when starting on a particulary heavy for loop the disp seemes not to be called until the loop is over even though it comes before the loop. Why is that? I though that Matlab was really linear or am I just choking it with to many calculations and the disp calls get the lowest priority?

• Getting Wikipedia infoboxes in a format that Ruby can understand

  I am trying to get the data from Wikipedia's infoboxes into a hash or something so that I can use it in my Ruby on Rails program. Specifically I'm interested in the Infobox company and Infobox person. The example I have been using is "Ford Motor Company". I want to get the company info for that and the person info for the people linked to in Ford's company box. I've tried figuring out how to do this from the Wikipedia API or DBPedia but I haven't had much luck. I know wikipedia can return some things as json which I could parse with ruby but I haven't been able to figure out how to get the infobox. In the case of DBPedia I am kind of lost on how to even query it to get the info for Ford Motor Company.

  Hi I'm somewhat of a newbie to python and I'm using app engine and aptanna studio - I need to run some python shell commands so that i can complete the tasks in this Tutorial on how to set up 118 and django. I have got this all working but i don't understand how i run the python commands to compile the dictionarys such as $ PYTHONPATH=/path/to/googleappengine/python/lib/django/ /path/to/googleappengine/python/lib/django/django/bin/make-messages.py -a To be honest - why am i saying that! I dont know where in aptanna studio i run this command -then worse I don't quite understand what exactly i type based on the above command line. My path to google app engine is D:\Program Files\Google\google_appengine\ Can anyone help shed some light on how i do this from aptanna / the root of my project??   I have a MySQL InnoDB table laid out like so: id (int), run_id (int), element_name (varchar), value (text), line_order, column_order `MyDB`.`MyTable` ( `id` bigint(20) NOT NULL, `run_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `element_name` varchar(255) NOT NULL, `value` text, `line_order` int(11) default NULL, `column_order` int(11) default NULL It is used to store data generated by a Java program that used to output this in CSV format, hence the line_order and column_order. Lets say I have 2 entries (according to the table description): 1,1,'ELEMENT 1','A',0,0 2,1,'ELEMENT 2','B',0,1 I want to pivot this data in a view for reporting so that it would look like more like the CSV would, where the output would look this: --------------------- |ELEMENT 1|ELEMENT 2| --------------------- | A | B | --------------------- The data coming in is extremely dynamic; it can be in any order, can be any of over 900 different elements, and the value could be anything. The Run ID ties them all together, and the line and column order basically let me know where the user wants that data to come back in order.

  In a custom UIViewController, if I have a member UINavigationController that I initialize with self as the root view, like this: navController = [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:self]; then presenting a modal dialog does not hide the tab bar at the bottom of the screen. The result is that if the user switches to a different tab while a modal dialog is displayed, when they pop back to the tab that was displaying a modal dialog then subsequent calls to presentModalViewController do not display a modal dialog at all, even if I call dismissModalViewControllerAnimated as a result of the tab switch. If I initialize the UINavigationController with out setting self as the root controller, navigationController = [[UINavigationController alloc] init]; then the tab bar is hidden as expected. I've changed things in my program so that this isn't really an issue for me anymore, but I'm not sure that I understand why this is happening. Is it considered bad practice to have a navigation controller with self as the root, if the nav controller is going to be displaying modal dialogs?

  Hello, gcc 4.4.2 / Visual Studio C++ 2008 I have been using cmake on linux, without any problems. Now I have ported by application to run on windows. I generated the solution files using cmake -G "Visual Studio 9 2008 ../src" However, I know that cmake only creates a Makefile that is used by the compiler to build your application. I open my solution in Visual Studio, I press the F7 key to compile. I am wondering does it actually use the Makefile that was generated by cmake? Or it is just compiling the application like any normal visual studio program? Many thanks for any advice,

  Hi, I have a header file in which there is a large struct. I need to read this structure using some program and make some operations on each member of the structure and write them back.   From the preface of the second edition of Kernighan and Ritchie's "The C Programming Language": As before, all examples have been tested directly from the text, which is in machine-readable form. That quote threw me for a loop. What exactly does it mean? Was the original manuscript written as a literate program? My first thought was that this book, published in 1988 (original, first edition in 1978) predates literate programming, but now I'm not so sure. Can anybody shed some light on this?

  I just bought a Google Nexus One smartphone, and I want to write a small Android application for fun. Suppose I can get my current GPS coordinates, so then how can I programmatically find nearby landmarks or points-of-interest within some radius? Is there an API to get GPS geo-tagged landmarks, like in Google Earth's database? For example, if I'm in downtown Chicago, my program would point me to all the "tourist" things to visit in that city. Ideally, it would all run on my smartphone, but if necessary, I can have the smartphone query a webserver, which would then run more queries.

• pySerial writes to Arduino Uno get buffered

  I have a Python script that writes short messages to the serial port on my Arduino Uno board using pySerial. There is a loop and depending on some conditions, multiple writes can happen within a loop, something like this: while True: #Conditions block 1 if <CONDITION1>: serial.writelines("INIT") elif <CONDITION2>: serial.writelines("NEW") ... #Conditions block 2 if <CONDITION1>: # Fetch something from the Internet serial.writelines("CHECK") elif <CONDITION2>: # Fetch something from the Internet serial.writelines("STOP") ... But, when my Arduino board receives this it receives the first message as INIT, but the second one is being read as INITSTOP or INITCHECK and third one gets concatenated to the previous messages. My arduino program checks for specific message in this way: if(msg.equals("CHECK")) { // Do something } else if(msg.equals("INIT")) { // Do Something else } Can anyone guide me on this? BTW, I don't think the problem is with the Arduino as it works perfectly when I test it with the Serial Monitor available with the IDE. I've tried adding sleeps of upto 10 seconds before every write, but that did not work out.

• Using java to send/receive different objects through UDP

  Hello everyone, I am writing a program in Java where there are communications between two or more machines using UDP. My application sends objects after serializing them through the network to the other machine where it will be deserialized and dealt with it. I was successful in sending one kind of objects so far. My problem is that I want the sender to be able to send different kind of objects, and for the receiver to be able to receive them and cast them again to their appropriate types. However, since UDP allocates a byte buffer then receive the data into the buffer, it is impossible to cast or detect the type of the received object as different objects have different sizes. Is there is a way that I can use to send different kind of objects using UDP and then receive them at the other end? (I don't ask for code here, just some ideas) Thanks

• New NCover 3.4.2 makes all my MSTest unit tests fail

  Yesterday, I decided to install the newest NCover version (3.4.2). However, when I ran it on my existing .ncover configuration file, the NCover output suddenly reported that all my MSTest tests failed. Of course those tests succeed when ran within Visual Studio. Because of this, NCover isn't able to determine any coverage. Somehow the old configuration doesn't seem to work with the new version. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be or how to solve it? Btw. Here is my ncover configuration. • How to debug a process using Visual Studio?

  If an application† crashes: i hit "Debug" and Visual Studio is my currently registered Just-In-Time (JIT) debugger: Visual Studio appears, but there's no way to debug anything: i do not see any disassembly. i do not see any symbols i do not see reconstructed source code from reflection i do not see any registers the call stack is empty Other JIT debugger products are able to show disassembly, but they are either command-line based (Debugging Tools for Windows), or do not support symbols (OllyDbg, Delphi). Additionally, my question is about debugging using Visual Studio, since i already have it installed, and is already my registered JIT. How do you debug a program using Visual Studio? Alternatively: has anyone written a graphical debugger that supports the Microsoft symbol server? † not, necessarily, written in Visual Studio Edit: Changes title to process rather than application, since the latter somehow implies "my application."

  In formal specifications based on abstract algebraic types and equational theory you use formulas of equational theory to specify theory. System which will satisfy those constraints is called in formal logic a model. Modeling is process of creating a model, which abstracts of some aspects, which are unnecessary details for a specific case. So concrete system has to adhere to created model in observed aspects. Programming is a process of creating a program which will have specific behaviour - will perform specific algorithms - and programming languages through different paradigms enable us to think in a certain specific way, which abstracts of some details, usually machine specific ones. So could we be doing all those things at the same time, because they are principially the same? Is declarative programming the nearest attempt to do that? Could we use some sort f programming languages which will be good for programming as well as for modeling and specification?

• Visual Studio 2010 SQL Server Database Project - Ignore Stored Procedures and Functions

  I really like the new SQL Server Database projects in Visual Studio 2010. I also like using the "Generate DROP statements for objects that are in the target database but that are not in the database project" option in the deployment properties. However, I do not want to manage Stored Procedures and Functions using this interface; I have another tool for that. Every time I do a build and deploy, VS will drop my stored procedures that I have created with my external program. I would like to essentially "ignore" stored procedures and functions. Is there a way to ignore stored procedures and functions when building SQL Server Database projects? I won't be able to use the "Generate DROP statements..." option if I want to use my external tool for stored procedures and functions.

• Error using CreateFileMapping - C

  Hello, I am using the tutorial on this MSDN link to implement a way of transferring data from one process to another. Although I was advised in an earlier question to use the Pipe methods, due to certain constraints I have no choice but to use the CreateFileMapping method. Now, i've succesfully managed to make two seperate window form projects within the same solution and by editing some properties both of the forms load at the same time. Furthermore I have managed to implement the code given in the MSDN sample into the first (Producer) and second (Consumer) program without any compilation errors. The problem I am having now is when I run the first program and try to create the handle to the mapped file, I am given an error saying it was unsuccesful and I do not understand why this is happening. I have added both the Producer and Consumer code files to demonstrate what I am trying to do.
