• How to deal with readers requesting free advice / support on my blog? [closed]

  I have a handful of popular articles on my blog (nothing huge), and they attract the occasional developer who wants help implementing some code grabbed from my blog. Now I'm getting people who haven't made any attempt to learn the code, email me their code, and expect me to trace it through for them. I'm sure anyone with a half-popular blog gets similar requests. What's the best way to deal with this scenario? I want to put together a boilerplate response including these points: How far have you gone with this on your own? (is it any benefit for anyone if I say they are being imposing) I'm happy to help with any problems you find in my code Point them to other forms of help such as stackoverflow, diagnostic tools relevant to the topic.

• I know of three ways in which SRP helps reduce coupling. Are there even more? [closed]

  I'd like to figure all the possible ways SRP helps us reduce coupling. Thus far I can think of three: 1) If class A has more than one responsibility, these responsibilities become coupled and as such changes to one of these responsibilities may require changes to other of A's responsibilities. 2) Related functionality usually needs to be changed for the same reason and by grouping it togerther in a single class, the changes can be made in as few places as possible ( at best changes only need be made to the class which groups together these functionalities) 3) Assuming class A performs two tasks ( thus may change for two reasons ), then number of classes utilising A will be greater than if A performed just a single task ( reason being that some classes will need A to perform first task, other will need A for second task, and still others will utilise it for both tasks ).This also means that when A breaks, the number of classes ( utilising A ) being impaired will be greater than if A performed just a single task. Can SRP also help reduce coupling in any other way, not described above? Thank you

• Looking for a dynamic programming solution

  Given a sequence of integers in range 1 to n. Each number can appear at most once. Let there be a symbol X in the sequence which means remove the minimum element from the list. There can be an arbitrarily number of X in the sequence. Example: 1,3,4,X,5,2,X The output is 1,2. We need to find the best way to perform this operation. The solution I have been thinking is: Scan the sequence from left to right and count number of X which takes O(n) time. Perform partial sorting and find the k smallest elements (k = number of X) which takes O(n+klogk) time using median of medians. Is there a better way to solve this problem using dynamic programming or any other way ?

• Managing large downloadable content on mobile devices

  This is a general question of how to best manage large downloadable content on mobile devices. Lets consider a situation whereby a mobile app needs to download a number of very large content items, like HD videos, that are over 500MB but under 2GB. Now, lets assume this content delivery system should be scalable. Would it be a fair assumption that: A reputable cloud service would be needed - if so, what is a reliable and cost effective cloud service for mobile devices based on anyone's experience? Large content downloads should only be attempted over a wifi connection, so the end user doesn't incur large costs, e.g. when travelling. Downloads should carry on in the background if possible, as the user won't want to wait in an app for long periods. If the downloads don't finish, or the OS quits the app, all downloads should carry on when the app is next activated? Are there any other pitfalls anyone may have experienced when managing large content on mobile devices? Thanks.

• How can you remove Unity?

  In previous versions of Netbook Remix I was able to disable the netbook-launcher and just have a blank desktop. I liked the speed of the Netbook version but not the interface, this worked well for me. However, now with 10.10 and Unity I'm having trouble doing a similar thing. I tried removing netbook-launcher from the startup and tried uninstalling unity. The best result I got was a black desktop with a panel and a non configurable blank white background. Is Unity soo integrated into this version that I will have to just go with the default ubuntu installation?? In the past the default version has been slower then the Netbook version without the interface. Thanks.

• Preparing to release code as open-source

  I have developed a fully functional tool which I would like not only to share with anyone interested but also get support from the community. This tool is cross-platform, written in C++ with Qt, the code is well commented but I still lack any documentation. There are also some small issues and improvements to be made before I can call it a stable, final version. What are the first steps that I have to take to release code as open-source and attracting people interested in contributing? This is my first serious attempt to release open-source code and I really don't know where to start. Should I just push it to Github put together a small wiki and pray for the best?

• How to flag a class as under development in Java

  I'm working on a internship project, but I have to leave before I can finish up everything. I have 1 class that is not stable enough for production use. I want to mark/flag this class so that other people will not accidentally use it in production. I have already put the notice in Javadoc, but that doesn't seem enough. Some compiler error or warning would be better. The code is organized like this: [Package] | company.foo.bar.myproject |-- Class1.java |-- Class2.java |-- Class3.java <--(not stable) If there was a single factory class that calls those classes in public methods, I could have set the method to class3 as private. However the API is NOT exposed that way. Users will directly use those class, e.g. new Class1();, but I can't make a top-level class private. What's the best practice to deal with this situation?

• Spawning bullets on command in Box2D

  I'm making a simple bullet hell game but I can't figure out how to get my character to shoot. Lets say I have bulletBody and shipBody, how would I continually spawn bulletBodies using the shipBody coordinates. I've tried a function that uses an array of b2bodies and just assigns them the bodydef and fixture but that causes the game to crash. C++ sample code would be best but any help is appreciated. EDIT: It looks like any reference to my b2World in a function will cause the game to crash. How do I declare the bodies without using a b2World as an argument in the function.

  I am in the pre-coding phase of creating a website. I know that it will be account based (users have to register/login to use the features). I also know that the server will have to do certain operations that are timer based, that is to say that user will have events that will trigger at a point chosen by the user and do something. I am searching for a good choice in server-side technology, and was wondering what my options are and what the best choice is. I would prefer open technology and something that doesn't use interpreted languages (Java, .net). My first thought is PHP + PGSQL for serverside and HTML+CSS+JS for clients, but I am still looking at my options.

• Why is the font spacing on some websites broken?

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 15 and so far am really impressed. I could not find a solution for my problem by googling. The fonts on some websites do not have proper spacing. they overlap and are very hard to read that way. I am using the Ubuntu standard fonts and have not changed them after installing.   first of all, i have to say i am new in using linux! i have installed ubuntu 11.04 and i wanted chenged its interface by macbuntu 10.10 and i've done it but the problem is that genie effect is not actived until now so i googled in many forums and i faund out that i must change my compizconfig manager! i've done it but when i try to use this command "compiz --replace"! my laptop crash that means i could not move any windows or terminal! i could not miniminze or close them??! what i am supposed to do for solviling this crash??? best regards, iman

We are doing a lot of this through JavaScript and are debating the best route to take to the database. HTTPHandlers, WebServices and Ajax are all being considered (or a combination of them). We want to be able to handle a million rows in theory, so it has to be scalable to at that. We are going through JavaScript as our page must not do post-backs, if your'e wondering.   I am refining my 2D game engine, and I want to look in to sorting sprite batches by texture (because I'm quite often using the same textures repeatedly). However, I also want to retain a few 'layers' of depth (i.e. ground < buildings < units < GUI etc). My question is, which of the following is the best approach (in terms of performance)? Create multiple SpriteBatches and Begin() and End() them in order; or... Create a single SpriteBatch and call Begin() and End() multiple times, once for each layer (in order)?

• When profiling a function for time use, what information is desirable?

  I'm writing a program similar to Python's timeit module. The idea is to time a function by executing it anywhere from 10 to 100,000 times depending on how long it takes and then report results. I've read that the most important number is the minimum execution time because this is the number that best reflects how fast the machine can run the code in question in the absence of other programs competing for processor time and memory. This argument makes sense to me. Would you be happy with this? Would you want to know the average time or the standard deviation? Is there some other measure that you consider more important?

  How will I know when my company is ready to receive an investment? I am starting a company and have bootstrapped it so far. I have produced four versions of the demo. The first fully-working version is underway. Getting this to a beta phase product will require capital, which requires an investment, which requires an investor, which requires I stop working on the product and go out and talk to people about it. The last time I raised money from investors, it took a while but I was successful. I don't want it to take a while. I want it to be brain dead simple for an investor to understand the value so that I can optimize the time I spend with the product. Is my logic flawed? Notebook Asus eeePC 900 with 2Gb of ram, intel inside CPU. So, which is the best OS should I use? I need one that have no problems with compatibily also that's not be so old. • Is JScript dying? If so, where should I go? [closed]

  I recently poked around Google for a little bit, looking for information about coding JScript. It's very sparse, which surprised me -- it took a link to a link to find Microsoft's own reference, which appears to omit most if not all references to console-based scripting that extends past Javascript. I'm working with the console here, not a webpage, so input and output seems very different than what Microsoft explains. If JScript is dying (and it appears to be so), where do I go from here? VBScript? My options are limited because the computers I'm using this on are carefully patrolled for new software. JScript's similarity to JavaScript was the biggest reason I had chosen it for porting over some of my prior work. I'm specifically looking for, at best, a console scripting language that doesn't need any extra software on Windows XP or higher, that at least supports standard input, output, pause, and file manipulation, little else.
