• How to convert mkv to dvd or avi

  I have some mkv files, and while Totem plays them perfectly, when i use Devede to burn them to dvd it all gets messed up: the video is ok, but the audio is out of sync. I did see that Devede does write my dixv avi files correctly to disk. So i am thinking what the best way could be to convert my mkv for playback on dvd? I was thinking maybe converting them to avi first? But i did not find a good way for that to happen. What do you suggest?

• is requiring a video player download acceptable

  Our site currently is going to require our users to download a player to view videos they will want to view on our site. The videos get uploaded by users from various sources (smartphones in 3gp format for example). However most people have Flash on their machines. I am trying to 'make a gentle stand' and tell the team that requiring a download of a video player is not acceptable. My thinking is this: instead of allowing people to upload 3gp and other formats then re-serving the exact format on REQUESTs from our site's users we will instead use a video converter such as FFMpeg to convert every uploaded video to FLV for viewing on flash. so when a user requests to view one of the videos on our site -- boom they probably already have Flash installed so we just play the video in their Flash player. I feel serving up FLV flash video is best. Does it ring true that requiring, say, a 3gp player download just to view a video is the wrong approach?

• Which Linux OS should I use?

  I have use Ubuntu 10.04 & 12.04 but my problem is disk space, I just have 4GB of HDD! awesome considering all hardware that exists nowadays! Notebook Asus eeePC 900 with 2Gb of ram, intel inside CPU. So, which is the best OS should I use? I need one that have no problems with compatibily also that's not be so old. I've tried some of lightly versions like Puppy, slax, LPS us army OS, Precise.... BUT I don't like any of them. What do you think about Debian or Linux Mint?

  I have a set of MySQL data similar to the following: | id | type | start | end | ============================================= | 1 | event | 2011-11-01 | 2012-01-02 | | 2 | showing | 2012-11-04 | 2012-11-04 | | 3 | conference | 2012-12-01 | 2012-12-04 | | 4 | event | 2012-01-01 | 2012-01-01 | I want to retrieve events within a certain date range, but I also want to return individual results for each row that has a time span of more than one day. What's the best way to achieve this? Using PHP is a possibility, but I wanted to avoid doing this because I will need to to take pagination into account, etc. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

• Writing scripts for Visual Studio project

  What is the best way to write and run small scripts and tasks that are specific to a particular .Net project? Such things as configuring a database or confirming proper connections to servers. In Ruby, I would build rake tasks for this sort of thing. I am currently using unit tests for these tasks as they are easy to run within VS and they have access to all the necessary libraries and project code. However, this is not really their intended purpose and, with the dropping of Test Lists in VS 2012, it does not work nearly as well as it used to. Is there a better solution than writing a console project to handle these little code snippets I need to run periodically?

  I come from a background with heavy use of the classical object-oriented paradigm for software development. The company I am a part of switched to Unity not too long ago, and we're all very excited to get started using it However, one aspect that have sparked my interested, and which I think will become a very important part of our future development, is Unity's approach to component-based design with scripting; with less focus on typical hierarchical aspect. Question I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good books on this subject? I have had trouble finding any books or books with reliable reviews, and was wondering if anyone more experienced here had something to say on the issue? Any other kind of resource would be excellent too, I'm just interested in getting to learn everything I can about it. • Animate sprite/texture position with VBO

  I'm currently worlking on a renderer for my projects and I want animate a sprite on screen. I've got a spritesheet but I don't know what is the the best way to update the texture coordinates for each vertex. Update vertices then update vertex buffer. (Heavy ?) Send to the shader my texture coordinates (It is possible ?) Don't use VBO ? By the way, I've got this structure : Object class with Geometry (Faces + Vertex + Buffer) and Material (Shader + other stuff ) properties, it is a good structure ? Thanks!

  First of all I'm 26 and I'm asking this question because I want to see how do you manage your time. Also I'm interested how do the programmers with a family(wife, several kids) manage their time. I'm asking this due the fact that I'm working aprox 7,5 hours at work (9 to 5), spent 1,5 hours on the way to/from workplace, and when I'm home I must cook/clean/etc and LEARN! And I have the impression that I don't have enough time to learn. Did you have a period similar in your life? To want to learn another language/improve your development/other skills? I saw here and on SO that there are a lot of peoples with +10k points, this in my mind means that they stay on blogs/forums more than 15 hours a day. • Tracking logged in vs. non-logged in users in Google Analytics

  I am building a social media site that is similar is structure to twitter and facebook.com where unauthenticated users who go to https://mysite.com will see a login + sign-up page, and authenticated users who go to https://mysite.com will see their timeline. My question is, what is the best practice (using Google Analytics) for tracking these two different types of users who are viewing completely different content but are visiting the same URL. I tried searching the Google Analytics docs but couldn't find what they suggested for this scenario. Perhaps I just don't know what keywords to search for. Thanks in advance for any help.

• Could it be more efficient for systems in general to do away with Stacks and just use Heap for memory management?

  It seems to me that everything that can be done with a stack can be done with the heap, but not everything that can be done with the heap can be done with the stack. Is that correct? Then for simplicity's sake, and even if we do lose a little amount of performance with certain workloads, couldn't it be better to just go with one standard (ie, the heap)? Think of the trade-off between modularity and performance. I know that isn't the best way to describe this scenario, but in general it seems that simplicity of understanding and design could be a better option even if there is a potential for better performance.

  Hello, I'm watching The Bold and the beautiful on the site: http://www.tvp.pl/seriale/obyczajowe/moda-na-sukces/wideo Yesterday I wanted to view next episode, however it didn't work. I checked various episodes from other points in time and none works. The "dots" that appear when a Silverlight video is loading are present, but after them there is only black screen (of death). I'm using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 32 bit with GNOME2 and firefox 3.6. I have all updates done. Could somebody check if any video is working for them and tell me their setup, please? Best regards. Oliverka

• Easiest Way to Get Started With 3D?

  I'm looking at getting into 3D game development and am wondering what would be the best, quickest engine to get started with. I need to be able to develop on a Macintosh with it. I know Java, and PHP mainly but have worked in many others. At this point, I feel I can adapt to most languages quite easy. So the programming language doesn't really matter to me. I've sorta kinda tried unity in the past and wasn't all too fond of it, so it's kind of a "I can't find anything better" resort. I'm hoping with how open I am I will find something I like more. • usb drive filesystem?

  So, school is approaching quickly, and one of the things on my supply list is a usb drive. Now I'm asking myself what filesystem to use. After some research, I found ext4 to be the most stable drive filesystem. But, I also found that Windows (The OS used by every computer in my school) can't read ext4 formatted drives without special drivers, and I'm sure the school wouldn't be too happy with me having to install the windows ext4 drivers on every computer I use with my usb. So, my question is, Should I use fat32, one of the ext filesystems (2, 3 or 4 would work) or NTFS, I have an ubuntu laptop, a Mac desktop, and of course the school computers I use are Windows, so which would be the best filesystem for my usb.

I picked most of my C# by following the code-base or random google searches on what I wanted to do at that point (like threading in C#). I feel a time has come to invest some time into understanding the language internals and also understanding the .NET framework from an architectural point of view. For example I am writing 20 lines of code to achieve the functionality and my co worker writing the code for the same functionality with just 5 lines. Since he used some looping statement to achieve that, but that code will execute around 30 to 50 times. So which is best way of coding? • OpenGL ES 2.0. Sprite Sheet Animation

  I've found a bunch of tutorials on how to make this work on Open GL 1 & 1.1 but I can't find it for 2.0. I would work it out by loading the texture and use a matrix on the vertex shader to move through the sprite sheet. I'm looking for the most efficient way to do it. I've read that when you do the thing I'm proposing you are constantly changing the VBO's and that that is not good. Edit: Been doing some research myself. Came upon this two Updating Texture and referring to the one before PBO's. I can't use PBO's since i'm using ES version of OpenGL so I suppose the best way is to make FBO's but, what I still don't get, is if I should create a Sprite atlas/batch and make a FBO/loadtexture for each frame of if I should load every frame into the buffer and change just de texture directions.

  What is the best way to allow for dynamic fields/database columns? For example, let's say we have a payroll system that allows a user to create unique salary structures for each employee. How could/should one handle this scenario? I thought of using a "salary" table that hold the salary component fields and joining these columns to a "salary_values" table that hold the actual values.   I am just messing around, trying to figure out how stuff works and right now I have a couple questions about HTML, JS and CSS engines. I know there are two major JavaScript engines out there - V8 and JavaScriptCore (WebKit's JS engine as far as I know). Is that correct? And what are the main HTML + CSS renderers out there? Let's say I want to build a web browser using V8 (I saw it has some documentation and stuff + I like the way it works), what are the best options for me? Partially another question. Is there any bare browser that uses V8 and runs on Ubuntu at least? P.S. I am a Ubuntu user and prefer C++.

• Are Promises/A a good event design pattern to implement even in synchronous languages like PHP?

  I have always kept an eye out for event systems when writing code in scripting languages. Web applications have a history of allowing the user to add plugins and modules whenever needed. In most PHP systems you have a global/singleton event object which all interested parties tie into and wait to be alerted to changes. Event::on('event_name', $callback); Recently more patterns like the observer have been used for things like jQuery. $(el).on('event', callback); Even PHP now has built in classes for it. class Blog extends SplSubject { public function save() { $this->notify(); } } Anyway, the Promises/A proposal has caught my eye. It is designed for asynchronous systems, but I'm wondering if it is also a good design to implement now that even synchronous languages like PHP are changing. Combining Dependency Injection with Promises/A seems it might be the best combination for handling events currently.
