• IIS7 is gzipping files but not serving the gzipped version.

  By following a number of helpful blog posts I have configured IIS to gzip my static files. I have even enabled Failed Request Tracing and filtered to the 200 status code, and I can see the successful compression events taking place as well as the finished headers, which look like this: Headers="Content-Type: text/css Content-Encoding: gzip Last-Modified: Mon, 04 Oct 2010 17:35:08 GMT Accept-Ranges: bytes ETag: "02ef37cea63cb1:0" Vary: Accept-Encoding Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET " However, when I test in Fiddler and Firefox the Content-Encoding header is missing, and the file is not gzipped. This is a similar issue to this question which was never resolved. IIS is generating the gzipped files which I can see in C:\inetpub\temp\IIS Temporary Compressed Files . Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot this?

• MySQL: how to convert many MyISAM tables to InnoDB in a production database?

  We have a production database that is made up entirely of MyISAM tables. We are considering converting them to InnoDB to gain better concurrency & reliability. Can I just alter the myISAM tables to InnoDB without shutting down MySQL? What are the recommend procedures here? How long will such a conversion take? All the tables have a total size of about 700MB There are quite a large number of tables. Is there any way to apply ALTER TABLE to all the MyISAM tables at once instead of doing it one by one? Any pitfalls I need to be aware of? Thank you

• Amazon EC2 Sign In

  When I change the home directory of my Amazon EC2 instance from /home/ubuntu to /home/ubuntu/folder in the /etc/passwd file, I am no longer able to access the instance using my existing keypair. Once I switch it back to the original directory I have no problems and can log into my instance as normal. I have checked the permissions on the new folder and they are drwxr-xr-x, which is the same the /home/ubuntu folder. I have a number of instances running at the minute and because of this change I have no way of logging back into them to rectify the situation. Does anyone have an idea what is going on? • Show Excel column filter information in cells

  We have a sheet with a huge number of columns and filtering is often used to navigate to the correct data. The problem is that sometimes its not obvious that the filter has been applied , the visual cue is very subtle. Is it possible to show some data via a formula or VBA about the filter inside another cell? Something like this: Just knowing if the filter is active would be a good help, knowing what columns have active filters applied to them would be icing on the cake. Ideally they update automatically. I dont have ownership of the spreadsheet so cant make major changes to its structure or anything but VBA is fine. Any ideas?

• Hard Disk recovery

  I have 3 disks of the same type model and year of production. All the disks were used part of a generic solution of an IBM server solution. My problem is that all 3 disks suffered the same malfunction at the same exact time and are now dis-functional. I went to two different expert's laboratories and got the same answer: To recover the data they need another identical disk from which they can take spare parts. Can my case really be that clinical? Anyway, I am not sure if this question belongs to this forum, but I am looking to buy the following disk: IIBM ESERVER XSERIES IBM P/N 24P3707 IBM FRU 24P3708 146.8GB USCSI 10K RPM PART NOMBER 9V2005-027 I already bought a disk with the same part number, but the labs said that apparently I need a disk that was manufactured in the same factory. That means that all the numbers have to be exactly the same. If anybody know where I can purchase such a disk (the information on the lost disks is really important to me), please tell me the place.

• Windows 7 slowing down during hard drive activity

  Sometimes when normally using my PC, it will (seemingly) randomly slow down, and maybe sometimes even freeze for several seconds. During this slow down period, it looks like a (I don't know which drive it is) hard drive is constantly being written to. During the last slow down, I started Windows's Ressource Monitor and found out that the System process was writing up to 10MB/s to a drive (I suspect it's the system drive, C:\, but I don't know for sure). I'm not doing anything unusual (at least, I don't think I am), and most of the time, it will work normally, but, as I said, it just randomly slows down for some times. Any ideas on what might be causing this and how I can prevent this from happening again? (I have a triple-core processor and 4GB of RAM. My system drive is a WD Caviar Black 500GB, my secondary, 'data' drive is a Samsung drive, which I don't know the model number of, but I can look it up. I can also post my full PC specs if needed.)

• Ubuntu 6.06 Boot problem

  I tried to boot my pc using ubuntu 6.06 in the live cd mode but it refuses to boot. It throws the error Uncompressing Linux.. ok, booting from kernel [ 54.168828] ACPI Unable to load the System Descriptor Tables The live cd works perfectly okay in other computers. Out of curiosity, I also tried to boot using Slax live cd, It too threw some errors incomplete literal tree invalid compressed format (err=1) UDF-fs: No partition found (1) XFS: bade magic number XFS: SB validate failed Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0) The slax errors are a bit worrying to me. • Algorithms for Data Redundancy and Failover for distributed storage system?

  I'm building a distributed storage system that works with different storage sizes. For instance, my storage devices have sizes of 50GB, 70GB, 150GB, 250GB, 1000GB, 5 storage systems in one system. My application will store any files to the storage system. Question: How can I build a distributed storage with the idea of data redundancy and fail-over to store documents, videos, any type of files at the same time ensuring that should one of any storage devices fail, there would be another copy of these files on another storage device. However, the concern is, 50GB of storage can only store this maximum number of files as compared to 70GB, 150GB etc. With one storage in mind, bringing 5 storage systems like a cloud storage, is there any logical way to distribute or store the files through my application? How do I ensure data redundancy through different storage sizes? Is there any algorithm to collate multiple blob files into a single file archive? What is the best solution for one cloud storage with multiple different storage sizes? I open this topic with the objective of discussing the best way to implement this idea, assuming simplicity, what are the issues of this implementation, performance measurements and discussion of the limitations.

• Dual boot problem with ubuntu 12.04 and Vista

  Greetings from New Zealand. I have installed Microsoft Windows Vista and then installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my refurbished Compaq nx8220 laptop. I get the following infamous head hurting prompt continually. error: no such partition. grub rescue> Have tried most of the common recommended solutions. Live-CD then install Boot-Repair through the Terminal didn't work. It repaired all the linux stuff when restoring grub and then can't boot into Windows Vista. When I use Boot-Repair to fix the MBR, then I can't boot into Ubuntu. Tried installing BCD 2.1 in Vista and tried all the options one after another in BCD. Still no Ubuntu when selected through the options menu from BCD on restart/reboot. I have tried the boot repair option on the Ubuntu server CD-ROM, tried installing earlier versions of Ubuntu 11.04, 11.10, and Ubuntu server 11.10 and 12.04. Still the same result. I tried deleting the Ubuntu partitions through Vista a number of times and reinstalling Ubuntu. I have been trying and retrying all the options in Boot-Repair in different combinations for the past week and a half. I have tried at least 10 times installing and reinstalling Ubuntu. I really love Ubuntu and believe I have exhausted most of the recommended solutions and have spent too much time on this. Its driving me nuts!! please can someone help, I have finally given up (sigh). • files appearing empty or only partially transferred on FTP server.

  firstly, apologies if this question has been asked and answered before, but I have had a look through related queries and found nothing identical to this. I have had a website for a few years, and have never had any problem uploading any files. But today, when i went to transfer a new html file onto the server...i did so, the file arrived. so i browsed to the file in my browser to check the page as i always do, and the browser wouldn't acknowledge it. after repeated attempts to transfer it, it finally seemed to go over, but only 1/4 of the file size..4KB out of 16KB...so only the top of the page would be viewable in my browser...ive tried transferring on a number of ftp clients and no love... my expertise on this is limited and i cant really think of the next step, the server isnt full, so...im just stumped. any ideas? any and all feedback is great appreciated.

• How do I change the output line length from the "top" linux command running in batch mode

  The following command is useful to capture the current processes that are taking up the most CPU in a file: top -c -b -n 1 > top.log The -c flag is particularly useful because it gives you the command line arguments of each process rather than just the process name. The problem is that each line of output is truncated to fit on the current terminal window. This is ok if you can have a wide terminal because you have a lot of the output but if your terminal is only 165 characters wide, you only get 165 characters of information per process and it is often not enough characters to show the full process command. This is a particular problem when the command is executed without a terminal, for example if you do it via a cron job. Does anyone know how to stop top truncating data or force top to display a certain number of characters per line? This is not urgent because there is an alternative method of getting the top 10 CPU using processes: ps -eo pcpu,pmem,user,args | sort -r -k1 | head -n 10

• Database implementation question?

  consider a disk with a sector size of 512 bytes, 2000 tracks/surface, 50 sectors/track, 5 doubled sided platters, average seek time is 10 msec. Assume a block size of 1024-byte is selected. Assume a file that contains 100,000 records of 100-byte each is to be stored on the disk, and NONE of the reocd can be spanned 2 blocks. How many blocks are needed to store the entire file?? If the file is arranged sequentially on disk, how many surfaces are required?? Now, i have calculated that 10,000 blocks are needed to store 100,000 records. But i am not sure how to find out the answer of the surfaces required. I only calculated the capacity of track is 25KB and capacity of surface is 50,000 KB But I don't know how to calculate the number of surfaces... Could anyone help me how to get the answer? • Getting Steam.exe to run through a http proxy

  I'm sitting behind an http proxy which Steam refuses to go through. Trying Proxifier to fix the solution rendered an error about having to use an https proxy, though research shows that it shouldn't need one. Is it possible to make a target parameter in a shortcut? ie. "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" --http-proxy=myusername:mypassword@SERVERNAME:8080 I have the server name and port number, though I'm yet to understand the relevance of 'myusername:mypassword', or infact which username and password these instructions were referring to. Of course, if a target parameter wouldn't work, would there be another way to get Steam to work?

• Which powerful laptop, with UK keyboard and 8gb ram

  I've been searching high and low for high spec laptops compatible with Ubuntu. The lack of coherent information on the topic is high (considering the number of people who apparently want a good laptop with an OS operating system). So I thought you may have some advice. My requirements: a) has = 8Gb ram b) is compatible with Ubuntu c) has a UK keyboard and charger d) does not cost the Earth Which would you go for? Does anyone have good experience with high-end laptops running Ubuntu? So here's some background research: Samsung Series 7 looks great, but has various problems on Ubuntu, including: poor battery life, touchpad does not work, graphics card not fully supported and sucks power when it does (see [here] and [here], for example). Other options on the [wish list] include: the sensible [Acer] (possibly n.1 choice, but not sure about graphics card compatibility or battery), a nice looking [HP Pavilion dv6-6c56ea], which also has incompatibility issues (see [here] and [here] and check ubuntuforums) And another [Acer] which may be best due to its simplicity and cheapness. Other sub-questions: didn't Dell offer Ubuntu support for decent laptops (above 6Gb ram their offerings are scarce); what about pre-installed options such as those provided by System76? If it weren't for the UK keyboard and charger, I'd probably go for this [amazing-looking] [machine]. Many thanks for any advice, P.s. • What gaming keyboard(s) will work with Ubuntu?

  I've been looking at gaming keyboards to use on Ubuntu system. Microsoft has a few popular ones (e.g., Sidewinder X4, X6), but the programmable function keys appear to be unusable without the Windows software. (Though here's a post from someone who has a more recent project that uses usbmon and xdotool to add functions to some keys.) Another choice in my budget is the Cyborg V.05. It seems about right for my needs, but I would be depressed having a bunch of useless, nonprogrammable keys on it. Logitech has some models (e.g., the Logitech G110), though again I expect that the extensive macro capabilities (which I don't need) would be lost under Linux. There's a project called g15tools which has some code to work with older Logitech gaming models, but I don't know what the current status is. Last entry there was in March 2010. There are also a number of very old posts around the internet with regard to the Logitech G11 and G15. Compatibility with the current keyboards, Ubuntu version, and Linux kernel are suspect. I'm in the U.S., and so it appears that few of the Roccat keyboards are available, and they're over-priced. Support might be OK for these, though -- there's a short Phoronix article about Roccat improving their Linux support, and there's also a project and webpage for "Using Roccat Hardware with Linux". Honestly, the only feature I have to have is good backlighting for the keys, and if it's not wired (which is fine), the wireless capability should function. I could probably live with dead function keys, as long as they weren't in places that would interfere with things like Unity/compiz shortcuts. Any experience or suggestions? I've not seen much to inspire confidence with programmable/macro keys. There is a thread (with no solutions) on the Sidewinder X4 on ubuntuforums here. I'm also considering the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard as a possibility, even though it's not specifically a gaming keyboard. It is backlit, and it's supposed to be a nice keyboard.

• Small, simple LDAP server as an alternative to OpenLDAP

  I have taken a look at the installation and configuration instructions for the newer OpenLDAP releases and decided that it's too much work to set up for my small userbase. Basically, I only use LDAP to synchronize user accounts on a small number of machines (ok, this does not really require a directory server) and to give those users access to some web-based tools, avoiding the need to create user accounts in several places. Can you recommend a small, simple LDAP server for use on *nix systems? My only requirements are the ability to serve up PosixAccount and Group objects via LDAP.

• DNS problems : correct nameserver, namserver working, but not resolving

  My problem is as follows. Any suggestions are welcome. [domain].org is not resolving whois and checking the registry information shows that the correct nameserver is set. The primary nameserver is also the server on which domain.org is hosted. The primary nameserver is also used for a number of other domains, and is working fine for those. Logging into the server, I can ping [domain].org and it resolves correctly. Setting the nameserver as my own DNS server on my laptop, and the URL resolves correctly. If the domain has the correct nameserver set, and the nameserver can resolve the URL to the correct IP address, and if I use the nameserver as my DNS then it resolves correctly, AND the nameserver is used for other domains which are resolving correctly, then why isn't it working? NB : this is a new domain registration and has been set up for around 10 days now, so it's not simple slow propagation. Any ideas? thanks

  Hi everyone Im looking for an app pr line of code that could let me observe a process, save the info in a number of variable and then put the gathered info on a file. Ive been trying with variations of top but no luck. I am running several CentOS virtual servers, VM is 2gb ram 2 processor. Maybe a script that works over a specified amount of time while writing lines with the info on a text file so at the end i can have a sort of table with the data. The thing is Im going to stress test the server and I would like to have the data to make some statistics. Any comments and suggestions are most welcome.

  By default esxi creates a number of users and groups including: daemon nfsnobody root nobody vimuser dcui How secure is this default security setup? Besides changing the root password, is it advisable to modify the default users and groups? E.g. does esxi use default passwords for the accounts or anything else that could be exploited by malicious users? My scenario is very basic and I don't require any custom users or groups as only sysadmins will ever need to administer the virtual infrastructure, and they can do so using the root account. Thanks

• How to make the internal subwoofer work on an Asus G73JW?

  I have an Asus G73JW laptop which has an internal subwoofer built-in. Currently, the system detects the internal speakers as a 2.0 system (or I can change do 4.0 is the only other option). I found a bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/673051 which discusses the bug and according to them a fix was sent upstream back at the end of 2010. I would have thought this would have made it into 12.04 but I guess not?
