• Rack::ResponseHeaders in rackup for Sinatra

  I think this is a very easy one, but I can't seem to get it right. Basically, I'm trying to use Rack middleware to set a default Cache-Control header into all responses served by my Sinatra app. It looks like Rack::ResponseHeaders should be able to do exactly what I need, but I get an error when attempting to use the syntax demonstrated here in my rackup file: use Rack::ResponseHeaders do |headers| headers['X-Foo'] = 'bar' headers.delete('X-Baz') end I was able to get Rack::Cache to work successfully as follows: use Rack::Cache, :default_ttl => 3600 However, this doesn't achieve exactly the output I want, whereas Rack::ResponseHeaders gives fine-grained control of the headers. FYI, my site is hosted on Heroku, and the required Rack gems are specified in my .gems manifest. Thanks! Update: After doing some research, it looks like the first issue is that Rack::ResponseHeaders is not found in the version of rack-contrib (0.9.2) which was installed. I'll start by looking into that.

• Error Using PDCurses: Cannot Open File Libc.C

I've looked around for a bit, and I've tried adding Libc.C to the 'Ignore Library' list, which in turn causes about 150 errors. Not sure what to do from here.

• Continuous Deployment with a C#/ASP.NET website?

  I have a website in C#/ASP.NET that is currently in development. When we are in production, I would like to do releases frequently over the course of the day, as we fix bugs and add features (like this: http://toni.org/2010/05/19/in-praise-of-continuous-deployment-the-wordpress-com-story/). If you upload a new version of the site or even change a single file, it kicks out the users that are currently logged in and makes them start over any forms and such. Is there a secret to being able to do deployments without interfering with users for .NET sites?

• Securing WinForms Application suggestions

  I've been looking for a simple key/license system for our users. Its partly to stop piracy (avoid users from sharing the application around) and the other half to track the number of 'licensed users' we have. I have already read a few good suggestions on SO but I'm curious as to how people have implemented the 30 day evaluation criteria. Do you generate a key that stores the date somewhere and do a comparison each time or is it a little more complicated - deleting the file/removing the registry shouldn't deactivate. Are there any example implementations out there that can give me a head start? The irony is that our PM doesn't want to license a third-party system to do it for us. This is for a Windows Forms application.

• noindex, follow on list views?

  On one of our client's website we have lot's of list views with links to detail views. (Image a blog with the posts overview and the single pages). The detail views don't change, but the list views will change when new items come up. The pages displaying the list view don't contain any other valuable content. So my question is: Does it make sense to define meta "noindex, follow" on the list view pages (and of course "index, follow" on the detail views) to prevent search engines to point to the list views when the keyword is found in the title or teaser of the list view. By the time the visitor clicks on the list view search result it might have changed and the content is not visible anymore, whereas if he goes directly to the single view he will definitly find what he was searching for? Related question: The startpage also contains mainly a list view. Is it a bad idea to have the start page not indexed? Any SEO gurus here? :) Thanks, Fabrizio.

• Can Eclipse parse and use emacs-style meta information in source code?

I like the idea of storing this coding style meta-information directly and explicitly in the source code. Are there any options for doing this in other IDEs? Does eclipse in particular have the ability to configure itself from a line in the emacs format or something equivalent?

• rsync over ssh is not working anymore, while ssh itself is working fine (Write failed: broken pipe)

  This issue started happening after i changed router. This is the scenario: Windows7 Host Ubuntu 10.04 Guest (VirtualBox) Ubuntu 10.04 remote server What i used to do is run a very basic rsync command: rsync -avz --delete /local/path/ username@host:/path/to/remote/directory This worked perfect until i did change adsl provider, and i changed router aswell: now, this happens: rsync on Ubuntu Guest is not working anymore (to any random server), if using this new router rsync on Ubuntu Guest is WORKING, if i switch back to old router i tried a new virtual box ubuntu install, and the command is WORKING with both the routers So, the not-working-combo is oldUbuntu + newRouter. To get things worst, i can state that (on the not-working ubuntu) i ping the remote host plain ssh connection to the remote host is working fine (i can auth, connect, and do stuff on the remote host) • How to implement buffering with timeout in RX

  I need to implement an event processing, that is done delayed when there are no new events arriving for a certain period. (I have to queue up a parsing task when the text buffer changed, but I don't want to start the parsing when the user is still typing.) I'm new in RX, but as far as I see, I would need a combination of BufferWithTime and the Timeout methods. I imagine this to be working like this: it buffers the events until they are received regularly within a specified time period between the subsequent events. If there is a gap in the event flow (longer than the timespan) it should return propagate the events buffered so far. Having a look at how Buffer and Timeout is implemented, I could probably implement my BufferWithTimeout method (if everyone have one, please share with me), but I wonder if this can be achieved just by combining the existing methods. Any ideas?

• Flex / ZendAMF / PHP app, corrupted data with some linux clients problem

  Hello, i'm buiding a survey web application, using Flex for the front-end (nice forms), and a MySQL database for the storage, linked by PHP with the help of ZendAMF. I largely borrowed from this nice tutorial by Alan Gruskoff : http://digitalshowcase.biz/wordpress/?page_id=26 (The only one tutorial i've found to work with the last version of Flex). The app seems to works nicely in my tests, except on certain linux boxes : the data is somehow corrupted : there is no error message, no glitch, but the response of the forms are not what the user selected. I tried to reproduce the error on a fresh installed ubuntu VM, but it works fine. I've asked friends for some tests, and several linux users showed the same problem, on ubuntu and suse machines, all freshly updated and functionnal. The application was targeted to be the survey tool for my doctoral thesis, so i'm quite desperate here, and before i'm dumping it to start anew with php only, i'm asking here in case someone can help, thanks :-) Please excuse my english, by the way. • If terminating a hung thread is a good idea, how do I do it safely?

  My Delphi program relies heavily on Outlook automation. Outlook versions prior to 2007-SP2 tend to get stuck in memory due to badly written addins and badly written Outlook code. If Outlook is stuck, calling CreateOleObject('Outlook.Application') or GetActiveObject ... doesn't return and keeps my application hanging till Outlook.exe is closed in the task manager. I've thought of a solution, but I'm unsure whether it's good practice or not. I'd start Outlook with CreateOleObject in a separate thread, wait 10 seconds in my main thread and if Outlook hangs (CreateOleObject doesn't return), offer the user to kill the Outlook.exe process from my program. But since I don't want to force the user to kill the Outlook.exe process, as an alternative I also need a way to kill the new thread in my program which keeps hanging now. Is this good practice? How can I terminate a hanging thread in Delphi without leaking memory?

I have become a great fan of pre-allocating objects (kudos to SO and R inferno by Patrick Burns) and would like to improve my coding habits. In lieu of this fact, I've been thinking about writing more efficient functions and have the following question. Is there any benefits in removing variables that will be overwritten at the start of the next loop, or is this just a waste of time? • Would Mercurial help me work from 2 PCs?

  I currently use Perforce for source control, but want to start working on the code from 2 different PCs at the same time (desktop and laptop). The laptop would not be able to access the perforce server very often, which makes Perforce a poor choice in this setup. Distributed source control tools like Mercurial seem better suited to the task, but I am still not clear if this would work or not. Does anyone have any experience of using Mercurial to work on 2 machines at once (eg desktop in the week, laptop in evening and weekends). Does it help, or is it still a pain the butt keeping everything in sync and knowing what is going on.

• iPhone: Interface Builder leaks memory?

  I have been working on an iPhone project, where we created all the user interface programmatically in code. Now I'm going to start a new iPhone project and thinking of using Interface Builder instead, because it has been recommended to me as being a very useful tool, creating less headache than writing everything in code and in general much faster (regarding development time). However, my team members have some concerns due to previous problems with using Interface Builder and resulting memory leaks. Therefor they suggest building everything in code again. I don't know where these concerns come from, but maybe someone with more experience than we have can give some insight on that topic. Doing a simple Google search doesn't really provide any information proofing that there are any problems with memory leaks created by the Interface Builder itself.

Since StackOverflow is such a great resource, I want to be able to take it with me, so I'm building a small desktop application to load/search/display the most recent data dumps. Problem: I want to display code blocks in the same sort of rectangular block as this site does, so I played with the RichTextBox control to try to create this effect. Unfortunately, the RichTextBox.SelectedBackColor property only colors the actual text, when what I want is a rectangle reaching to the outer limits of the selection. Example: This is what I am able to produce with the RichTextBox: This is what I would like to create: Questions: Is there any way to produce this effect using the RichTextBox? If not, are there any other controls I could use to create this effect?

• What Are Basic Tools For A New Project?

  For a long time, I thought that to start a new project we only need 3 basic tools. 1) A Build System (e.g. Maven & CruiseControl) 2) A Version Control System (e.g. CVS & SVN & GIT) 3) A Bug Tracking System (e.g. Bugzilla) Yesterday, a senior guy told me that we need at least one thing more. That is KPI(Key Performance Index). Without KPI, it is impossible to measure whether the project is progressing well or not. KPI is kind of SOFT tool compared to Maven/SVN/Bugzilla. I believe since I missed SOFT tools, there must be some other kind of tools I missed. So, anybody get some ideas what other basic tools necessary for a new project?

• How can I set up jnlp for use with Sinatra?

  I have a website currently running Sinatra and a bunch of other technologies. I wanted to get progress bars running, but that's been a no go. So, a friend of mine whipped up a quick upload in Java, and I'm running that through scponly (chrooted) to make sure they can't do anything funny with changing directories and suchlike. But how can I start the jnlp file from Sinatra? Is it as simply as making it a link and then letting it be downloaded by the user? This code suggests otherwise, but there are a lot of things in there I don't understand (probably because I'm not reading it in the context of the larger program there).

• How to connect to the database in Magento?

  I'm trying to build a simple Magento Module that needs to connect to the database at the start of each page request. All tables need to be accessible to it. I've been pulling my hair out trying to understand how to do it. The best I could figure out was that I need to set this in the config.xml file of my module, but exactly what that command is/how it may be used, i haven't been able to figure out. Can someone please guide me or show me how to accomplish this? If not, would it be too bad a practice to include a custom config.php file which connects to the database manually?
