• Intel Core i7 clockspeeds

  I've got an Intel i7 3770 CPU and am generally quite happy about it. However when I am just browsing around without programs running in background it seems to underclock itself quite a lot. This is not a real issue, however there seems to be a small hiccup (0.1s maybe) when it clocks itself higher again. Does anyone have a similar issue? Can I change the thresholds that are being used to change the clocks? I absolutely like that it underclocks the CPU whenever I am not around, but it shouldn't start to annoy me. It might also be related to Windows 8.1, but I am not sure about that, just saying that it's a possibility. I ran LatencyMon as suggested and got this (worrying?) result:

• SharePoint Upgade Question

  My company will be upgrading our SharePoint 2007 site to SP2010 and I know how to do it. But there is one step in the migration step that I don't. The pre-upgrade checker will give you a list of components/solutions that are referenced in the contentDBs but is not installed on the upgraded sharepoint farm. What do you do if the component is not available for 2010? (I believe the only option is uninstall the component before migration). Even if an upgrade is available for upgraded components won't it have a different GUID and therefore not solve the migration error messages? In other words, isn't it true that "install missing components" advice for 07 components only work if the 07 components works in 2010 (which I think is very few components.). Thanks. Seth

• Offline installer for Windows 8?

  I have a computer repair service, and can see a few more people wanting Windows 8 updowngraded. Because of New Zealand's internet speeds it takes 1-2 hours to run the download part of the official Windows 8 upgrade tool. This means I have to go back to people the next day. I would like to keep an "offline" version of the Windows 8 upgrade tool on my flash drive, so I can avoid this inconvenience. Obviously it would still require a legit credit card etc, it just comes with the download part not needed. I cannot find such a tool. Does one exist?

• No option for keeping installed programs when upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8

  (Related : How can I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and keep my files and applications? ) I'm trying to upgrade my Windows 7 Pro (msdnaa) to Windows 8 Pro (msdnaa). The Windows 8 is the final version (I don't have access to previews on msdnaa anymore). As you can see on the related question accepted answer, Windows 8 should give an option to keep installed programs. But it does not. The only available options are "Keep only personal datas" and "Nothing". Any idea ? I'm running with SP1. I've got two partitions (one of them only contains data of a virtual machine). • Is it more difficult to upgrade your certification from SQL Server 2008 to 2012 than to get it from scratch?

  I was wondering about the new MCSA certification on SQL 2012 and how it seems to be more difficult to upgrade your certification from 2008 to 2012 than to get the 2012 from scratch. Reason I think that is true is because anyone with any MCTS SQL Server 2008 certification can upgrade it to a MCSA 2012 by passing 2 tests (457 and 458). If you try to get it from scratch, you need to pass 3 tests (461, 462 and 463 - which are pretty much the same as 432, 433 and 448 for SQL 2008). But the thing is, even though its one test less to upgrade, all the skills necessary to pass 461, 462 and 463 are squeezed on 457 and 458 so, it seems easier to get from scratch than upgrade. Any thoughts?

• Updating from OSX Lion 10.7.2 to 10.7.4

  I just got my Mac upgraded to 10.7.2, just to be able to install Xcode 4.3.3. However, when I try to install Xcode 4.3.3, it says that it requires a minimum of OSX 10.7.3. Then using the "Software Upgrade" tool it detects successfully for me that a combined upgrade to 10.7.4 is available. As I select Install Item, the download starts however, it fails after complete download (taking two hours) saying something like "the update cannot be saved". I have done this twice already, and followed it up until 5 minutes were left. I have also checked that there is enough space (60 GB) available on my hard disk, while the update requires around 1.5 GB. The question is what is causing the problem mentioned in bold above.

Do they affect the performance of CPU or system? Do they result in increased deviation of performance numbers? (i.e. Do they prevent me from getting reliable performance numbers?) If so, how do I avoid these messages and increasing counters? Would running the performance tests on a well-cooled desktop system help?

• Installing Windows 8 over Windows 7 with Ubuntu installed using wubi (both on `C:\`)

  Current state I'm using both - Ubuntu (installed via Wubi on the same drive as Windows) and Windows 7 - quite frequently. I just bought the upgrade to Windows 8 and was curious to try it out, however I'm quite insecure whether Windows 8's "secure boot" will exclude my current Ubuntu installation and if it's even possible to keep it. So... is there any way to upgrade to Windows 8 without overwriting Ubuntu? (I really don't want to reinstall it, as a lot of customization has been done here and taking backups and all would get pretty wearing (same case for Windows 7 - if possible, I'd like to keep my files)) This is not a dublicate of Installing Windows 8 over Windows 7 with Ubuntu installed using wubi? because this question only deals with the case when Ubuntu has been installed on (e.g.) D:\ (while Windows is being installed on C:\)

• Trouble upgrading OS X, because HD doesn't use GUID Partition Table Scheme

  So I have a MacBook with Mac OS X 10.5 and I'm trying to upgrade to 10.6, but when I run the upgrade 'install' I quickly get to a page where I am supposed to 'Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X' and there is only the one hard drive, so it is auto selected, and below that I see a warning message and the only button available is the 'Go Back' button. The warning message says: "Macintosh HD" can't be used because it doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the disk, choose the Partition tab, select the Volume Scheme and then click Options. So I followed the above instructions, and I got to the last step, where I'm supposed to click the 'Options' button, the problem is that I cannot click that button, it is disabled.. So what am I supposed to do?

• Processor not running at max speed

  My laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 which should be running at 2.5GHz, however CPU-Z consistently reports my Core speed at right under 1.6Ghz (8x multiplier and ~200MHz Bus Speed). Even when I'm doing heavy development work and the processor is running at 100% for extended periods of time the core speed reported by CPU-Z never goes up to 2.5GHz. My understanding is that this reduction in speed is to save power, but this happens even when I'm plugged into the outlet. Does anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it?

• Oracle 10.2.0.1 --> 10.2.0.4 patchset errors on Advanced Queuing tables. Serious or not?

  We're running Oracle on RHEL 5.4 64-bit. We recently did an upgrade from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.4. Many errors were generated during the upgrade (sample listed below from trace.log) but during application testing afterward everything seemed fine (clean EXP, inserts, updates, deletes, etc.). The errors look like they are all related to Advanced Queuing tables and views. We are not using replication at all, this is a simple single instance db. ORA-24002: QUEUE_TABLE SYS.AQ_EVENT_TABLE does not exist ORA-24032: object AQ$_AQ_SRVNTFN_TABLE_T exists, index could not be created ORA-24032: object AQ$_ALERT_QT_S exists, index could not be created for queue ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_AQADM_SYSCALLS", line 117 ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_AQADM_SYS", line 5116 Is this worth worrying about, and if so, how do I go about cleaning up/recreating the corrupted and/or missing objects?

• Processor always at max speed

  I am running Windows 8 Pro on an Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 Mid 2012 15 inch non retina. It has a Core i7-3720 QM CPU @ 2.6 GHz. For the past few days, I have noticed that it is constantly running at max speed which is 2.59 GHz. Before, it used to run at 1.5 - 1.8 GHz on normal usage. • Unable to create system partition or locate existing system partition during Windows-7 installation

  I have Windows XP 32-bit installed on an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with 2x 500gb drives in RAID1 using the NV RAID controller. On this there are 3 partitions (XP, XP backup and DATA) There are also 4x 500gb drives in RAID10 using the Silicon Image 3114R RAID controller. I just purchased a Windows 7 64-bit as an ISO download upgrade version which I promptly burned to DVD and attempted to perform an upgrade installation. Here is the error message I am getting: Firstly, where are these "Setup log files" located? Second, does this mean I need to find compatible (64-bit?) drivers for the Mainboard and put them on floppy? EDIT: As suggested on another forum, I tried downloading the nVidia Mainboard RAID drivers for Windows 2003 64-bit. I loaded the drivers successfully using the Load Driver button, but pressing NEXT still returns this error.

• please assist me debug a stack trace

  I am having an issue on a windows 2003 terminal server, where the system process is using a constantly high amount of CPU. I believe that it is the srv.sys that is causing an issue, but not quite sure how to fully diagnose the problem. I have looked at the stack for the srv.sys!workerthread, which is what seems to be using the CPU. The stack is as follows: 0 ntoskrnl.exe!KeSetBasePriorityThread+0xf7 1 ntoskrnl.exe!MiDeleteAddressesInWorkingSet+0x103 2 srv.sys!WorkerThread+0x7c 3 ntoskrnl.exe!FsRtNotifyFilterReportChange+0x10 4 ntoskrnl.exe!RtClearBits+0x24 Can anyone offer any advice based on the above, or some other things I could look at in order to get to the bottom of this? • Why can't I upgrade my kernel via the terminal?

  If I type sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade I can only see that the kernel packages are kept back, and not installed. As the screenshot shows. If I then start the update manager I can install the kernel, with no problems at all. As the second screenshot shows. Why is this? The kernel is a new package and not an upgrade of an old one, this is why you can't use the command upgrade that upgrades packages. You need to use the command dist-upgrade to install new packages.

  Hi I have a CentOS 5.2 i386 Production box with Qmail, LAMP etc now since it showed me that it could upgrade to 5.3, i downloaded all the packages using yum update However, the update fails due to perl packages conflicting I believe that while installing Qmail, I had tried for Mailscanner and thus it upgraded the per itself I read somewhere that we can uninstall the conflicting rpms and then go for the upgrade But, I am about 50 % sure that if I go ahead and uninstall perl, my server will crash like a falling house of cards Also, perl is needed by variety of packages working including vpopmail etc Thus, I request anyone to please tell me if we have a safer solution to this IF there is no solution to this, then can somebody please teach me how to backup and restore Qmail as it is. • *nix OS that is easy to update to latest software

  I need to configure a server (*nix) that runs our (bespoke) CMS and Applications. In the past I have defaulted to using Cent OS 5, but I find this outdated difficult to upgrade the software to the versions we require. For example, we need PHP 5.3, but CentOS 5 has 5.2. Updating is fine but breaks something else (normally MySQL support in PHP). Eventually it will get to a situation where I can't upgrade because of missing dependancies and incompatible versions. Error: Missing Dependency: httpd = 2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3 is needed by package httpd-devel-2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3.i386 (updates) Is there a better alternative OS for hassle free updates, I need: Apache 2.2.17 (the development version for apxs) MySQL 5.5.8 PHP 5.3.5

• kvm and qemu host: Is there a limit for max CPUs (Ubuntu 10.04)?

  Today we encountered a really strange behaviour on two identical kvm and qemu hosts. The host systems each have 4 x 10 Cores, which means that 40 physical cores are displayed as 80 within the operating system (Ubuntu Linux 10.04 64 Bit). We started a Windows 2003 32 Bit VM (1 CPU, 1 GB RAM, we changed those values multiple times) on one of the nodes and noticed that it took 15 minutes until the boot process began. During those 15 minutes, a black screen is shown and nothing happens. libvirt and the host system show that the qemu-kvm process for the guest is almost idling. stracing this process only shows some FUTEX entries, but nothing special. After those 15 minutes, the Windows VM suddenly starts booting and the Windows logo occurs. After a few seconds, the VM is ready to be used. The VM itself is very performant, so this is no performance issue. We tried to pin the CPUs with the virsh and taskset tools, but this only made things worse. When we boot the Windows VM with a Linux Live CD there is also a black screen for several minutes, but not as long as 15. When booting another VM on this host (Ubuntu 10.04) it also has the black screen problem, and also here the black screen is only shown for 2-3 minutes (instead of 15). So, summerinzing this: Each guest on each of those identical nodes suffers from idling a few minutes after being started. After a few minutes, the boot process suddenly starts. We have observed that the idling time happens right after the bios of the guest was initialized. One of our employees had the idea to limit the amount of CPUs with maxcpus=40 (because of 40 physical cores existing) within Grub (kernel parameter) and suddenly the "black-screen-idling"-behaviour disappeared. Searching the KVM and Qemu mailing lists, the internet, forums, serverfault and other various sites for known bugs etc. showed no useful results. Even asking in the dev IRC channels brought no new ideas. The people there recommend us to use CPU pinning, but as stated before it didn't help. My question is now: Is there a sort of limit of CPUs for a qemu or kvm host system? Browsing the source code of those two tools showed that KVM would send a warning if your host has more than 255 CPUs. But we are not even scratching on that limit.   I'm experiencing performance slow down on JBoss 7.1.1 Final. I wrote simple program that demostrates this behavior. After few days of JBoss 7.1.1. running, it takes 330 sec to run this code. In both cases, I launch the code when the CPU utilization is very low (say, 1%). Any ideas why? It's within J2EE applicaiton. I use CDI so I have a button on JSF page that will call method "proceed" on @RequestScoped component PerformanceTest. I deploy this as separate war file and even if I undeploy other applications, it doesn't change the performance. It's a virtual machine that is sharing CPUs with another machine but that one doesn't consume anything. Here's yet another observation: when the server is after fresh start and I run the bubble sort, It utilizes 100% of one processor core. It never switches to another core or drops utilization below 95%. However after some time the server is running and I'm experiencing the performance problems, the method above is utilizing CPU core usually 100%, however I just found out from htop that this task is being switched very often to other cores. That is, at the beginning it's running on core #1, after say 2 seconds it's running on #5 then after say 2 seconds #8 etc. Furthermore, the utilization is not kept at 100% at the core but sometimes drops to 80% or even lower. For the server after fresh start, even though If I simulate a load, it never switches the task to another core.

• AMD FX 8350 potentially overheating

  I am worried that my CPU is overheating when running at maximum capacity. I have not overclocked the machine. The machine often powers down after a couple of minutes of max CPU usage. I get the following events in the Event Log after the crash: Log Name: System Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power Date: 11/10/2013 12:05:40 Event ID: 41 Task Category: (63) Level: Critical Keywords: (2) User: SYSTEM Computer: home-pc Description: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. What can I do to confirm this or further narrow down this issue? Due to the sudden nature of the crash, no MEMORY.DMP is created I believe. I am happy to post any extra information that is needed.

• Laptop turns off after 20 minutes of use

  My laptop a sony vaio VGN-NW11S http://www.trustedreviews.com/Sony-VAIO-VGN-NW11S-S---15-5in-Laptop_Laptop_review. Everytime i turn it on, in safe mode or not, if i try to open an application i.e. run a process such as google chrome or event viewer, defrag, virus scan, it completely turns off without warning, nor giving a trace of events the next time I switch it on. Apart from that, I had worries it might be my battery or power supply but I dont think it is that, I took the laptop apart cleaning fans etc. and have ordered some cpu paste as I checked to see the condition of the processor. I will post to see if re-applying the paste works. One more thing, when the heavy processes kick in, the fan starts to make a lot of noise, maybe trying to cool down the CPU? Any ideas on what else it could be and what I could do to test what is wrong?

• PC won't post after replacing mobo

  I am trying to fix an older HP desktop (~2 yrs old) that didn't seem to have video working. The video card on the machine was integrated. After some debugging, it looked to be the mobo, so I went out and got a new one (also with integrated video). Now, it pretty much does the same thing. Here's the symptoms: no video, doesn't post at all, fans DO spin (both chasis and CPU). Any other ideas? I suppose it could be the CPU, but I would think if it was, it would at least post.
