    Hiya Im trying to make use of maatkit as a means of dumping a database and then restoring to another database. For dumps: mk-parallel-dump --user abc --password xyz --databases $db --base-dir /tmp/dump For restore: mk-parallel-restore --create-databases --user abc --password xyz --database devdb /tmp/dump My question is, is my logic and understanding correct, and would it be ok to do it like this.     Say my application has a "Posts" model, and one of the function is add_post(), it might be something like: function add_post($data) { $this-db-insert('posts',$data); } Where $data is an array: $data = array ('datetime'='2010-10-10 01:11:11', 'title'='test','body'='testing'); Is this best practice? It means if you use that function you need to know the names of the database fields where as my understanding of OOP is that you shouldnt need to know how the method works etc etc

  • How is parsing phase in a compiler different from a rule engine ?

    Hi, I have a rough understanding of how the compilers work (I mean languages, grammars, lexical analysis, parsing etc). The rule engines have various rules and associated action, just like you have rules in the grammars and you can associate actions with them in parser-generator tools like ANTLR. So I am a bit confused on how to differentiate between these two. Could anyone give a clearer, more formal explanation for the differences ? Thanks, Abhinav.

  • How to reduce size of BIRT generated PDF with background image?

    It seems (at least that is our understanding of the issue at this point) that given a background image in BIRT, the PDF generation routine repeats the image information inside the PDF instead of having it once referenced as the background image of all pages of the PDF. This causes our BIRT generated PDFs to be too large. Is there a way to get BIRT to only store the image once inside the PDF and have it be the background image on each page of the PDF while keeping the file size more reasonable?

    I'm currently using Visual Studio 2008 to edit .js files with, and it has decent support but I want more... I like the VS syntax highlighting and auto-indentation features but additionally would like advanced features like: contextual info and help, collapsible JavaScript blocks, implicit symbol understanding for searching, refactoring and that kind of thing; also warnings and errors for the js code. Suggestions?

    The following Fortran code is giving me a bus error on my Mac but no errors when I run it on my Linux machine: PROGRAM TINY WRITE(UNIT=*, FMT=*) 'Hello, world!' END My understanding is that a bus error occurs when the program attempts to access impossible memory but I do not understand where such an attempt has been made in this program. My MacBook has GCC 4.4.0 and my Linux machine has GCC 4.3.2. Any ideas as to why this error occurs?

    I lack understanding of how does the generated proxy class object (CGLib enhanced POJO) is transferred to the remote client and still pertains its ability to generate Lazy Init. Exceptions. Does that mean that there is some kind of contract that all the transferred objects of some kind of class (a proxy) will be reinstantiated as proxies again? Where does the client obtain those generated classes? Sorry, but I totally do not understand.

    My understanding is that in order to return a complex PHP variable to Javascript, it should be done via AJAX and json_encode. Could somebody give me an actual example (both PHP and Javascript code) of this? Lets say we have the two-dim array in PHP: $twoDArr = array( array('Greg', 44, 'Owner'), array('Joe', 23, 'Renter'), array('Susan', 39, 'Owner'), array('John', 32, 'Renter) ); How would we return this to an analogous two dimensional array in javascript using json_encode?

  • objective C NSString retain

    If I create a String with [NSString StringWithFormat], do I have to [retain] it? My understanding is that convenience methods add the objects to autorelease pool. If that is the case, shouldnt we retain the object so that it doesnt get drained with pool at the end of the event loop?
