  i'm having a difficult time understanding how to control the z property of display objects. i know how depth works, but what i don't understand is how i can get the maximum depth, or the number at which the display object just disappears into the background. i assume depth is based on the stage's width and height, and that is why assigning the same depth of the same display object appars mismatched with different stage sizes. so how can i appropriately measure depth?

That said, I believe I understand the fundamental difference between data, information, and knowledge. My understanding is that information carries both data and meaning.   When building an Eclipse plugin (lato sensu) which consists of multiple plugins and one feature, I have two ways of specifying dependencies: in the plugins themselves, using Require-Bundle and Import-Package in META-INF/MANIFEST.MF; in the feature.xml file from the feature. In my understanding, it should be enough to declare the dependencies at the lower level, i.e. in the plugins. Why do we still have the feature.xml requires mechanism?

  I'm trying to mimic the json_encode bitmask flags implemented in PHP 5.3.0, here is the string I have: $s = addslashes('O\'Rei"lly'); // O\'Rei\"lly Doing json_encode($str, JSON_HEX_APOS | JSON_HEX_QUOT) outputs the following: "O\\\u0027Rei\\\u0022lly" And I'm currently doing this in PHP versions older than 5.3.0: str_replace(array('\\"', "\\'"), array('\\u0022', '\\\u0027'), json_encode($s)) or str_replace(array('\\"', '\\\''), array('\\u0022', '\\\u0027'), json_encode($s)) Which correctly outputs the same result: "O\\\u0027Rei\\\u0022lly" I'm having trouble understanding why do I need to replace single quotes ('\\\'' or even "\\'" [surrounding quotes excluded]) with '\\\u0027' and not just '\\u0027'.

  I noticed some people don't bother having the usual incremented number as ID but instead simply generate a GUID. The advantages include: Quick and easy No need to keep track of previous IDs Guaranteed to be unique even across machines without knowledge of each other Some disadvantages are: Possibly performance bottleneck Uses a large number of bytes My understanding is that using a GUID is beneficial in most cases, except if optimization for time or space is an issue. Did I miss something? Or do you agree with this idea?

  I asked a similar question to this earlier this week but I'm still not understanding how to get a list of all installed applications and then pick one to run. I've tried: Intent intent = new Intent(ACTION_MAIN); intent.addCategory(CATEGORY_LAUNCHER); and this only shows application that are preinstalled or can run the ACTION_MAIN Intent type. I also know I can use PackageManager to get all the installed applications, but how do I use this to run a specific application? Thanks
