• How to change fonts in Kod?

  I started using this new text editor called Kod (runs on Mac OS 10.6): http://kodapp.com/ It's very very fast, I'm a poor programmer and I don't have money to pay for TextMate, this might be the closest to TextMate that I've used. (TextMate cost around $50). The problem is.... Where is the preferences window? Where can I set the font size? I need to make it bigger, that's it... Does anyone know how to do that? EDIT: I think they haven't implement them yet... From their discussion in google group.

• Error "iertutil.dll not found" after installing IE8

  I rolled out IE8 to a group of test users in our organisation overnight, and after logging in in the morning, several of the users reported the error Userinit.exe error and explorer.exe error - iertutil.dll not found After clicking OK, the PC just hangs with the background visible. A few people are reporting this error in various forums, but "do a system restore" is not a good solution. We can easily roll back to IE6 by replacing the DLL, or by uninstalling IE8. We just need a flawless rollout! We're on Windows XP Service Pack 3. Edit: We deploy via SMS. Initially we had 2 machines with the error, but somebody made a mistake with the test package and it rolled out five nights in a row. By the end of the five nights, 4 more machines had developed the same issue.

• What is the effect on LVM snapshot size when a file block is rewritten with it's original contents?

  I'm exploring using LVM snapshot's to off site incremental archives from a snapshot "master" file system. In essence: simply copy across only the files on the "master" that have changed since the last incremental copy to the "archive". Then snapshot the "archive" to retain the incremental. I am a bit puzzled as to the block usage behaviour of the archive's own incremental snapshot. I'm expecting that LVM is not smart enough to know that the "file block" is actually unchanged, and the a new copy will be allocated and written for the fresh "archive" file system. Can anyone confirm this, or point me to a document/page that gives some hints? BTW: the OS hard disk cache, hard disk physical cache and hard disk itself also doesn't need to do any actual "disk writes" as the "disk block" likewise is unnecessary. Any pointers to discussion of this style of optimisation would also be ineresting.

• remastering knoppix: which version and what method should i use

  I'd like to remaster knoppix (mainly add and configure some software). I downloaded newest version (KNOPPIX-ADRIANE_V6.2CD-2009-11-18-EN.iso) but later i read that it has some other window manager as default, not kde... and i want to have kde on my remaster. Is kde included on that iso but it's not default or it's not included at all? If it's not there what knoppix version should i get for my remaster? My other question... I've seen some remastering scripts (with menus, etc) on knoppix forums, do any of these works with version i have? Or with version i should have if i need kde?

• A complete tool for auditing and archiving emails would be helpful for the community?

  Please, don't treat this like a discussion question, I'm looking for direct answers: Yes / No, because... I work on a financial company and I'm needing a tool for email archiving and auditing. The compliance sector is asking for it and I have to provide it. I've searched and found two solutions: MailStore (commercial, Windows only) and Enkive (open source, very poor UI and lack of features). I'm using Postfix as MTA and Courier for IMAP/POP access. I'm almost deciding to write it myself, I have the knowledge needed, but I'm wondering right now if it's worth to put (a lot) more hours to make it open source and user friendly. So my question is, have you ever had the same need? Would this be a helpful solution? Is there any other good tool that I haven't found? Thank you!

• Win2008 - restrict VPN user permissions

  Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Foundations file server with no AD, only workgroup sharing some folders, and now a RRAS server. Shared folders are open to everyone in the office (XPs and Sevens) without accounts/passwords, but I was thinking about partially limiting access to the new "VPNuser" account. I'm new to Windows Server and its permissions settings: I thought about denying access to vpnuser through NTFS rights in some folders. It doesn't work, but now I'm guessing that the vpnuser is not considered as a logged user (doesn't appear as such) and is considered a "guest", like the rest of people connecting in the office. • How to recursively move all files (including hidden) in a subfolder into a parent folder in *nix?

  This is a bit of an embarrassing question, but I have to admit that this late in my career I still have questions about the mv command. I frequently have this problem: I need to move all files recursively up one level. Let's say I have folder foo, and a folder bar inside it. Bar has a mess of files and folders, including dot files and folders. How do I move everything in bar to the foo level? If foo is empty, I simply move bar one level above, delete foo and rename bar into foo. Part of the problem is that I can't figure out what mv's wildcard for "everything including dots" is. A part of this question is this - is there an in-depth discussion of the wildcards that cp and mv commands use somewhere (googling this only brings very basic tutorials).

• Ubuntu/Linux version recommendation for HP dv6 3122TX?

  I purchased a HP dv6 3122TX recently and after installing Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit I ran into multiple issues like, The wireless driver is not supported by Uubntu. (1) [The driver is RaLink RT3090 ] The ethernet stopped working sometimes for no reason [The driver is Realtek RTL8111/8168B ] "Corrupted low memory at ..." issue which is described as a kernel bug in Ubuntu support forums. (It started to take me to a terminal instead of the GUI and couldn't start x server after that) As I'm not an expert Ubuntu user I got fed up of all these issue and got back to Windows 7. But I need an Ubuntu installation up and running for my development work. What are your suggestions about a reasonable Ubuntu version that I should try? Or a different Linux variation? Should I stick to a 32-bit version? It'd be great anyone can give some advice on this issue.

• Mini-jack problem with Sony Vaio (running XP)

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists. • I need a few minutes of dedicated server a week, but not for hosting, just to convert ogg etc

  I'm completely happy with my webhosting, it's just that I need to do one little thing they won't allow, and that's run an instance of Sox to convert about 30 mp3s to ogg files, in various directories, a couple of times a week, to be done automatically in response to the detection of the upload of an mp3. Probably looking at a minute of server time over the whole week. I've had unhelpful suggestions on other forums like "why not leave your home PC on 24 hours a day and then use all your isp bandwidth to do this", which doesn't work for me. I know that I can host files on, say, Amazon S3, but is there something similar for my needs? All it would need to do would be: wget/ftp the mp3 files, convert them to ogg, ftp the files back to my hosting. Of course, all this wouldn't be needed if there was such a thing as a compiled binary of Sox (or any mp3ogg converter) for Centos which I could upload without needing root access, but I've given up asking that one, but always open to suggestions!

• clear contents from matched column of data in another sheet

  I have a column of email addresses on sheet 2 col A (but I could put them on sheet 1 if it would make it easier / faster) that I want to remove from sheet 1 col D if matched (there may be 2 or more occurences of the same email to be removed/cleared). (1000s of rows in each sheet). After all day searching forums I’m getting more confused & can't find what I'm looking for.   I am having a difficult time grasping what is the correct way to read the size of the files since each command gives you varying results. I also came across a post at http://forums.devshed.com/linux-help-33/du-and-ls-generating-inconsistent-file-sizes-42169.html which states the following; du gives you the size of the file as it resides on the file system. ( IE will will always give you a result that is divisible by 1024 ). ls will give you the actual size of the file. What you are looking at is the difference between the actual size of the file and the amount of space on disk it takes. ( also called file system efficiency ). • Windows 7 blocks network access to network-installed apps

  Windows 2008 R2 domain. Users, running Windows 7 Enterprise, are trying to run some software from a network share. Specifically, I've tested this with MATLAB and PuTTY. When starting, MATLAB has to contact a licensing server to get its license. This action fails for regular users when they start MATLAB from the network share. However, if they copy the installation directory to a local disk everything works fine. Running MATLAB as an admin user from the network share also works. Same story with PuTTY. If the executable is launched from the share, regular users cannot connect to any servers. Something is blocking network communications for programs that are launched from a network drive.   Please pardon the newbie question, but I can't seem to figure this out. I followed the Voxilla's tut to the tee: http://voxilla.com/2009/10/15/voxill...p-by-step-1457 But in making calls, my softphones connect, yet no audio (in either direction). I know from poking around the forums that this is generally caused by two factors: NAT and audio codecs. I (being new to the arena), however, don't know which. I believe I have Asterisk and the clients restricted to just ulaw, and I also believe I have the correct ports open, and my externip set correctly (I think the Voxilla AMI does this automatically, since it's in the cloud). I'm a bit lost. I'd be happy to post whatever configuration files that might help, provided you tell me where they are on the filesystem. But like I said before, this is effectively a vanilla install of Voxilla's own FreePBX AMI. I'd appreciate any help or guidance here. Thanks!

• What should I know before considering a VPS or dedicated server?

  I have a plan for the future for an application and web service. The client will have an application that will send requests to a server-side Java back-end that will process requests, and the server should also be able to host a website, preferably on a WAMP setup (which is what I'm used to; very little *nix knowledge). Now, I cannot provide any hard stats because this is only a plan that's in a discussion stage. However, we do fully expect it will scale enough to need some type of dedicated hosting. My question is this: what types of things should I know about before looking into getting hosting? What should I be asking the hosting providers before I decide on a purchase? When is it appropriate to switch from a VPS to a fully dedicated server?

• How can I start an X11 session on my headless Fedora 13 server?

  I have a small home server using Fedora 13 as operating system. Since the upgrade to Fedora 13 I cannot start the X11 server. (I need it to use vnc) When I try to start the server, both the nouveau and the original NVIDIA driver claim that there's no physical monitor attached (which is true) and that the X server cannot start because the initial display modes cannot be probed. I tried to manually add the display modes to xorg.conf but they seem to be ignored. Some forums suggest to simply use the VESA driver in this situation, but since I can't get it run either (different, more obscure message) I want to get it working with the nouveau driver as a matter of principle. Temporarily attaching a monitor would mean a lot of work for me ( 1 hour and currently it's almost 35°C/95°F in my home) I want to try that only if that definitely fixes the problem and stays that way if I remove the monitor again) How can I make the driver work without having a physical monitor attached? • Intel hybrid graphics stuck in power save mode

  I have an Asus UL30V with Intel hybrid graphics. When I bought it it used to switch to turn of the better graphics card to save power and run on a more power effecient one. When I connected the laptop to a power source again I could go to the intel graphics icon on the task bar and click on "switch to enhanced performance mode" or something similar. But like 2-3 months ago it suddenly vanished. I cannot switch modes anymore, it's gotten stuck in power save mode. I can change the windows power setting but that doesn't enable the better graphics card :( What should I do? I've tried restarting the computer and that does not work. I really hope I don't have to reinstall the drivers! I have windows 7 Home Premium x64 Any ideas?

• recommendations for a lightweight linux distribution for a test server

  I'm planning on setting up a test server to experiment with some application servers (tomcat/jboss/...) and with some portals. Now the machine I've set aside for this is lightweight CPU/GPU wise(Atom D510, 4 gigabyte ram, 500 GiB hdd, onboard GPU). But it should suffice for most things, I'm more interested in the stability of JBoss/Tomcat for my purposes than the stability. However I'm having a bit of trouble picking an appropriate distribution size/performance/setup time wise/security wise since it seems I can't sneeze without another distribution popping up. I've been thinking about going for Fedora since I've read that that distribution has been optimized for Atom, but I'm not really familiar with it. My experience with Linux has mostly been limited to Ubuntu and some tinkering with puppylinux. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty using the command line. I'm not planning on starting a discussion per se, mostly the pros/cons that people have encountered with some distributions

• MS-Outlook add-on to move a new message to the same folder as the rest of the thread

  I'm forced to use MS-Outlook in my job, while I very much like the feature that shows all the messages of a discussion thread (that are stored in different folders) in the inbox when a new message is received for that thread, if the previous messages are in a different data file (which I'm forced to have as the MS-Exchange server quota is very very small) then the message list only shows the name of the data file and not the name of the folder where the messages are stored. As a result, because I file my message by context (i.e. all the emails for project A go into a "Project A" folder, etc), and its important for me to have all the messages in a single thread in the same folder, it is sometimes hard to figure out into which folder should I file the new message. It would be great help if there was some add-on or VBA script that I could add to my setup that will offer a shortcut key or a button to "file this message to the same folder as the previous messages in the conversation thread".

• Key modifiers affect remote VNC sessions in OS X

  I have two concurrent users of my MacBook: one local (with local peripherals) and one remote (connecting via VNC to a user kept logged in with fast user switching). As described here http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/52547-howto-simultaneous-user-environments-via-vnc.html That's working fine, except that when I hit modifier keys (e.g. shift, option, ...), I also affect the remote user. For example, if I hold down shift, the remote user's key strokes are capitalised, and if I hold down option, they get strange glyphs instead of the normal letters. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or how to fix it?

  I have an Access 2003 database. When I click on a pivot table, I get this message MS Access There isn't enough memory to complete the Automation object operation on the worksheet object. There is a lot of discussion concerning this message. Here is one link. http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/113228-access-2003-file-pivot-table-issue-when-opening-in-access-2010 But this particular link's explanation doesn't really go into fixing the problem in general, like fixing the pivot tables and getting things all nicely back together in the original Access database. That's why I am also interested in converting the database to 2010 format if that is possible. Are there instructions -- I cannot currently find them and would very much appreciate a link -- on dealing with this problem in a nice stepwise fashion?

• Limit number of concurrent user logins in Windows Server 2008 Active Directory

  Is there the possibility to limit Active Directory users' max concurrent login sessions? I've read many articles and discussions about the solution, but none of them seem to be working. Many had suggested UserLogin script that doesn't work in Windows Server 2008. Some other suggested CConnect that is not good enough. It's also very complicated. Some others have introduced UserLock that should be paid for. It's wondering that Windows Server 2003 DOES have the feature (wile as a third-party), but Windows Server 2008 doesn't have!
