  • Developing for Chrome App/Android?

    - by Johnny Quest
I have been developing for win7 mobile (XNA/silverlight and will continue to do so, love everything about it) but I wanted to branch a few of my more polished games to google app store online, and perhaps android(though not sure, as with all the different versions it makes learning/loading applications a bit tricky) What is the most versatile language to start learning from chrome apps/android: Java would be excellent for android, but could I port it to a web app for chrome? (and its close to C#) Flash would work for a web app as I can just embed it into a html page (have done actionscript before, didn't care much for the IDE though), but would it also work on android? or I guess there is always C/C++ but haven't heard much about that, though I think it works for both (though C++ does interest me) Any advice would be excellent, thanks.

  • Redering performance in FlasCC + UDK when compared to Stage3d and UDK on Windows?

    - by Arthur Wulf White
http://gaming.adobe.com/technologies/flascc/ Developers can now access UDK for browser applications. Does this mean greater performance than using a Stage3D engine (Away3D 4) and how much of a noticeable difference in performance would it make in rendering speeds? Is there any benchmark you could propose that would allow to compare them fairly? I am asking this to help myself understand the consequences in performance for deciding to use UDK in a browser based game. I would also like to know how it compares with UDK running natively in Windows? I am not asking which technology to use or which is better. Only interested in the optimizing rendering speed in a 3d browser game with flash.

  • Tile-based maps in AS3

    - by Ashley
I want to make a tile-based platformer in AS3. I want my game to read an external maps file (in xml or json or somethimg similar) to draw a tile-based map. I've seen loads of tutorials for this in AS2 and other languages, and the few I've found in AS3 are either incomplete or filled with extra unnecessary features. I just want to be able to draw a basic map from sprites in Flash. Any links or information to point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

  • LIghtspark Playback Crashes [on hold]

    - by user147369
My introduction is for my personal health: I hate Flash and then HTMLs finally wil be the only standard around =)(/)$§%&$%$ I installed Lightspark from a repository. Butt no video playback in FF oder Chromium. In FF I usually get one of the following messages within the black playback box (I can't copy it) Cause: Unhandled action script exception Cause: args[0]&&args[0]->getClass && args[0]->getClass(isSubClass) Can't read more since the error message is bigger than the playback frame. Thanks for all answers !

  • The perfect crossfade

    - by epologee
I find it hard to describe this problem in words, which is why I made a video (45 seconds) to illustrate it. Here's a preview of the questions, please have a look at it on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/epologee/perfect-crossfade The issue of creating a flawless crossfade or dissolve of two images or shapes has been recurring to me in a number of fields over the last decade. First in video editing, then in Flash animation and now in iOS programming. When you start googling it, there are many workarounds to be found, but I really want to solve this without a hack this time. The summary: What is the name of the technique or curve to apply in crossfading two semi-transparent, same-colored bitmaps, if you want the resulting transparency to match the original of either one? Is there a (mathematical) function to calculate the neccessary partial transparency/alpha values during the fade? Are there programming languages that have these functions as a preset, similar to the ease in, ease out or ease in out functions found in ActionScript or Cocoa?

  • 2D tile-based terrain generation

    - by a240
As a summer project I decided it would be fun to make a Flash game. Right now I'm going for something like the look of Terraria. It's been a lot of fun, but today I've hit a snag. I need a way to generate my worlds. I've read up Perlin noise as a possibility, but I my attempts have given me sporadic looking results. What are some techniques used to generate these 2D tile-based worlds? Ideally I would like to be able to generate mountains, plains, and caves.

  • Server for online browser game

    - by Tim Rogers
I am going to be making an online single player browser game. The online element is needed so that a player can login and store the state of their game. This will include things like what buildings have been made and where they have been positioned as well as the users personal statistics and achievements. At this point in time, I am expecting all of the game logic to be performed client side So far, I am thinking I will use flash for creating the client side of the game. I am also creating a MySQL database to store all the users information. My question is how do I connect the two. Presumably I will need some sort of server application which will listen for incoming requests from any clients, perform the SQL query and then return the data. Does anyone have any recommendations of what technology/language to use?

  • What frameworks are available for cross device 2d game development?

    - by kim3er
Hi, I'm about to embark on a 2D gaming project. Initially, I'll be targeting iPhone and Facebook, but would like to expand the rollout to include Android (and possibly Windows Phone) in a future phase. Flash and Unity seem to be the most likely suspects, but is one better than the other? Are there pros/cons that may not be obvious at first glance? Are there frameworks that I have not considered? I am primarily a .NET developer, so the Unity C# integration is appealling. But I also have experience with AS3, JavaScript and Objective-C. Rich

  • Implementing a FSM with ActionScript 2 without using classes?

    - by Up2u
I have seen several references of A.I. and FSM, but sadly I still can't understand the point of an FSM in AS2.0. Is it a must to create a class for each state? I have a game-project which also it has an A.I., the A.I. has 3 states: distanceCheck, ChaseTarget, and Hit the target. It's an FPS game and played via mouse. I have created the A.I. successfully, but I want to convert it to FSM method... My first state is CheckDistanceState() and in that function I look for the nearest target and trigger the function ChaseState(), there I insert the Hit() function to destroy the enemy, The 3 functions that I created are being called in AI_cursor.onEnterframe. Is there any chance to implement an FSM without the need to create a class? From what I've read before, you have to create a class. I prefer to write the code on frames in flash and I still don't understand how to have external classes.

  • Collision Detection fails with AI cars

    - by amit.r007
I am making a car parking game in flash and AS3 wherein I drive my car along with other AI traffic cars moving along a specified path using Guidelines. I am using CDK for collision detection. The collision detection works fine with few AI cars, but doesn't seems to be working as required for few AI cars. When an AI car is moving on a path in a straight line it works fine.... but when the AI Car turns at 90 degress..... my car goes into the AI car (Overlapping) and it hits at the center of that AI car and then collision is Detected.... ..... I made a New path and used a new Sprite for AI car... but still the problem pursues....

  • Why won't videos on a particular website play under Ubuntu 13.04?

    - by Sadi
Very oddly, I cannot watch any videos a TV channel website, for example this one: http://www.kanald.com.tr/GalipDervis/Videolar/ I can see from the frame source that it contains an embedded Adobe Flash video and some Java scripts (all of which don't pose any problems elsewhere). I've tried different web browsers (Chrome/Chromium/Firefox), but it seems I have some sort of video codec problem in my system. I have installed all sorts of gstreamer plugins, codecs, etc. (maybe too many?) to avoid such problems, but strangely I can watch these videos using Linux Mint 15 Live Session on the same machine. I wonder how I can find out why a particular video (like this one) won't work on my system?

  • How to render a retro-like pixel graphics from 3d models?

    - by momijigari
I was wondering if there's a possibility to render a retro-pixel-like graphics from 3d model in real time? I'm talking about the Starfarer-like graphics. I know it's hand drawn, and it's 2d. But if I need a 3d objects with the same aesthetics? I'm currently working with Flash. But I don't need any ready-solutions, I just want to understand the principle from any other platform if there is one. So if anybody met anything like this I would appreciate your help. (If it's not possible to do in real time, I could at least pre-render a sequence of sprites. It would be much better than creating hundreds of hand-drawn ones)

  • Best database setup for one click games

    - by ewizard
I am building a one click game website/mobile app, and I am debating between using MySQL and MongoDB for the backend. The way I have been exploring it is with a NodeJS/Express/Angular/Passport/MongoDB stack - I have also implemented Socket.io. I have gotten to the point where I am sending data from the flash game to the server (NodeJS). The only data that needs to be sent is basic user information, the players score at the end of each game, and some x,y positions for each players game (for anti-cheating). It seems like MySQL would work fine, but as I am already using MongoDB - are there any major drawbacks to continuing to work with MongoDB on this project?

  • Shared Object Not saving the level Progress

    - by user3536228
I am making a flash game in which i have a variable levelState that describes the current level in which user has entered I am using SharedObject to save the progress but it does not do so first i declred a clas level variable private var levelState:Number = 1; private var mySaveData:SharedObject = SharedObject.getLocal("levelSave"); in the Main function i am checking if it is a first run of the game like below if (mySaveData.data.levelsComplete == null) { mySaveData.data.levelsComplete = 1; } and in a function where the winning condition is checked so that levelState could be increased i am usin this sharedobject to hold the value of levelState if (/*winniing condition*/) levelState++; mySaveData.data.levelsComplete = levelState; mySaveData.flush(); setNewLevel(levelState); } but when i play the game clear a level and again run the game it does not start from that level it starts from beginning.

  • My ubuntu 11.10 gets weird lately

    - by The questioner
I have quite a lot problems lately(about 2 weeks) running Ubuntu 11.10. First, flash playback in chrome hangs and lags all the time. While in Firefox is better, but still lags. Playing video files in the preinstalled Movie Player lags too. Second, I've turned automatic on and in some occasions, after I switched the computer on and successfully loaded the desktop, however, in just a minute or so, the screen just got black out and directed me back to the login page. I thinks there are bugs, please tell me how to correct those. Sysinfo: CPU: i5-2400 MB: GA H61M D2P B3 (no video card) Drive: Intel 320 40GB Thanks. p.s. should I upgrade to 12.04??

  • 4oD (UK) - Can't stream

    - by lordqwerty
I'm using the most up-to-date version of firefox and flash player. When I go on 4oD and press play I used to get the loading screen showing forever with nothing playing. I then had a search and someone suggested to turn off Ad-Block. So I did and it plays the advertisements. Once the last ad has played it does nothing. Has anyone else got this problem? Has anyone managed to fix it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Is perl's each function worth using?

    - by eugene y
From perldoc -f each we read: There is a single iterator for each hash, shared by all each, keys, and values function calls in the program; it can be reset by reading all the elements from the hash, or by evaluating keys HASH or values HASH. The iterator is not reset when you leave the scope containing the each(), and this can lead to bugs: my %h = map { $_, 1 } qw(1 2 3); while (my $k = each %h) { print "1: $k\n"; last } while (my $k = each %h) { print "2: $k\n" } Output: 1: 1 2: 3 2: 2 What are the common workarounds for this behavior? And is it worth using each in general?

  • Are hash values globally unqiue

    - by Wololo
I want to generate a hash code for a file. Using C# I would do something like this then store the value in a database. byte[] b = File.ReadAllBytes(@"C:\image.jpg"); string hash = ComputeHash(b); Now, if i use say a Java program that implements the same hashing alogorithm (Md5), can i expect the hash values to be the equal to the value generated in C#? What if i execute the java program from different environments, Windows, Linux or Mac?

  • Why a different SHA-1 for the same file under windows or linux?

    - by Fabio Vitale
Why on the same machine computing the SHA-1 hash of the same file produces two completely different SHA-1 hashes in windows and inside a msysgit Git bash? Doesn't the SHA-1 algorithm was intended to produce the same hash for the same file in all OSes? On windows (with HashCheck): File hello.txt 22596363b3de40b06f981fb85d82312e8c0ed511 Inside a msysgit's Git bash windows (same machine, same file): $ git hash-object hello.txt 3b18e512dba79e4c8300dd08aeb37f8e728b8dad

  • For Loop help In a Hash Cracker Homework.

    - by aaron burns
On the homework I am working on we are making a hash cracker. I am implementing it so as to have my cracker. java call worker.java. Worker.java implements Runnable. Worker is to take the start and end of a list of char, the hash it is to crack, and the max length of the password that made the hash. I know I want to do a loop in run() BUT I cannot think of how I would do it so it would go to the given max pasword length. I have posted the code I have so far. Any directions or areas I should look into.... I thought there was a way to do this with a certain way to write the loop but I don't know or can't find the correct syntax. Oh.. also. In main I divide up so x amount of threads can be chosen and I know that as of write now it only works for an even number of the 40 possible char given. package HashCracker; import java.util.*; import java.security.MessageDigest; import java.security.NoSuchAlgorithmException; public class Cracker { // Array of chars used to produce strings public static final char[] CHARS = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789.,-!".toCharArray(); public static final int numOfChar=40; /* Given a byte[] array, produces a hex String, such as "234a6f". with 2 chars for each byte in the array. (provided code) */ public static byte[] hexToArray(String hex) { byte[] result = new byte[hex.length()/2]; for (int i=0; i<hex.length(); i+=2) { result[i/2] = (byte) Integer.parseInt(hex.substring(i, i+2), 16); } return result; } public static void main(String args[]) throws NoSuchAlgorithmException { if(args.length==1)//Hash Maker { //create a byte array , meassage digestand put password into it //and get out a hash value printed to the screen using provided methods. byte[] myByteArray=args[0].getBytes(); MessageDigest hasher=MessageDigest.getInstance("SHA-1"); hasher.update(myByteArray); byte[] digestedByte=hasher.digest(); String hashValue=Cracker.hexToString(digestedByte); System.out.println(hashValue); } else//Hash Cracker { ArrayList<Thread> myRunnables=new ArrayList<Thread>(); int numOfThreads = Integer.parseInt(args[2]); int charPerThread=Cracker.numOfChar/numOfThreads; int start=0; int end=charPerThread-1; for(int i=0; i<numOfThreads; i++) { //creates, stores and starts threads.
