SQL Server installation with SharePoint is equally important and I have often seen that it is being neglected. Microsoft has published the Deployment Guide for SharePoint Foundation. It talks about various database aspects as well. For optimal sharepoint installation the required version of SQL Server, including service packs and cumulative updates must be installed on the database server. The installation must include any additional features, such as SQL Analysis Services, and the appropriate SharePoint Foundation logins have to be added and configured. The database server must be hardened and, if it is required, databases must be created by the DBA. • What amount of physical RAM would a typical "commodity class" server have, as of late 2013?

  I'm trying to spec out servers for my company's infrastructure group to build. They tell me anything more than 2GB is too much, which I find ridiculous considering cheap DRAM is about 15 bucks a dimm in bulk and our particular software runs better with more memory. I tried to find out how much google servers use, and pinning down a number is hard. Best I could find in a google research paper was that in 2008, their commodity servers were using 2 and 4GB dimms, but the paper never said how many. I realize "commodity server" is a vague term, but I'm just looking for a rough range in RAM used. I suspect at least 16GB is going to be the norm.

• Almost 2013 - Any decent options for mp3 to text? (Speech Recognition)

  I know there's some questions here on s/u regarding converting spoken word mp3 to text, however, most are pretty old (2010 and earlier). I'm just wondering if there's any new legitimate options for this task - if google has shown us anything, speech recognition has come a long way. Personally, I'd prefer a linux based solution, but I'm not picky. I've heard a lot about something called Sphinx, but I tried to set it up and get it going but I couldn't. I know there's a number of different componenents for Sphinx so maybe I was doing it wrong? Either way, are there any new applications for Speech recognition, especially from MP3 files? Thanks!

• Can't connect to research.microsoft.com on home Qwest DSL connection

  I have a puzzling issue regarding accessing research.microsoft.com from my home Qwest DSL connection. By default, I frequently get timeouts when accessing research.microsoft.com from Firefox, Safari, or Chrome on my Mac. I also cannot access the site from Internet Explorer in a Windows VM. However, I am able to access the site through proxify.com, so I know the site is not down. Furthermore, I haven't noticed problems accessing other sites (in particular, www.microsoft.com works fine). Also, I can access research.microsoft.com when I'm connected to networks other than my home Qwest DSL connection. Together, the above make me suspect a problem with either my router (Airport Express) or, more likely, my ISP. Anyone have any thoughts on how I can narrow down the problem further? I could call my ISP and tell them the above, but my feeling is that probably won't get me very far. I can get by browsing research.microsoft.com through a proxy, but it would be nice to figure out what's going on here and fix the problem. Oh, the only relevant discussion I found via Google was here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1311734.html Update: Thanks to those who have tried to help! I found one other thing while Googling that may be vaguely relevant: http://thedaneshproject.com/posts/supportmicrosoftcom-not-working-behind-squid/ Disabling the Accept-Encoding headers in Firefox actually didn't make a difference for me. I just thought the above might spark some other ideas about how mishandling of HTTP headers somewhere might be causing this problem. Thanks again! Another update: In case anyone is still thinking about this; I've found that I can't surf research.microsoft.com using the links text-based browser, but I can reliably download individual files with wget. Maybe that helps?

  2013 will see significant changes in priorities and initiatives among procurement professionals as they balance the needs of their enterprises with efforts to add capabilities for long-term procurement success. In response, procurement managers will expand their organization’s spend influence via supplier relationship management, sourcing, and category management. These findings are part of the new report, “2013 Procurement Key Issues: Going Deeper and Broader to Deliver Borderless Procurement Services,” by the Hackett Group. The authors say that compared to similar studies over the last five years, 2013 is registering the greatest year-over-year changes in priorities for both procurement performance and capability issues. Three Important PrioritiesThe survey found that procurement professionals are focusing their attention in three key areas. Cost reduction. Controlling expenses is always a high priority, but with 90 percent of the respondents now placing this at the top of their performance concerns, the Hackett analysts say this “clearly shows that, for better or worse, cost reduction is king” in 2013. Technology innovation. Innovation has shot up significantly in the priority rankings and is now tied with spend influence for second among procurement professionals. Sixty-five percent of the survey participants said pursuing game-changing innovation and technology is a top procurement initiative. Managing supply risk. This area registered a sharp rise in importance because of its role in protecting profits, Hackett says. • should i take Exam 70-515 or should i wait for Exam 70-480 ? [closed]

  As it states on Microsoft site exam 70-515 is scheduled to retire July 31, 2013. His successor is suppose to be exam 70-480 in my understanding. I know most of the stuff in exam 70-515 but it will take me like one mount to read the book from Microsoft Press Resource Center and get ready for the exam, also i will be paying for the exam not the company i work for. So i think it is better to start reading books and forums that concentrate on how and for what will be exam 70-480 then paying for something that will not be valued for ~ 1 year from now. Whats your thoughts/suggestions ?

• What's next for all of these Microsoft "overlapping" and "enhanced" products ?

  Recently I attended a road show, organised by MS Gold Partner company in the UK. The products discussed were: SharePoint server (2010 and 2007), Exchange server, Office Communication Server 2007, Exchange hosted services Office Live meeting, Office Communicator, System Center Configuration Manager and Operation Manager, VMware, Windows 7 etc. As Microsoft claims the enhancement in the each product against higher version, I felt that clients are not much interested in all these details. For example Office Communicator, surely they have improved a lot the product and first site all said 'WOW' great product, but nobody wish to pay money for all these extra features. Some argued, they are bogged down by all these increased number of menus. They don't need soft call feature included with mobile call. It apply for all other products as well such as MS office (next what 2 ribbons ?), windows OS and many more. Indeed there must be good features in all these products, but is it worth to spend money and time to update the older system ? Also sometimes these feature will decrease the productivity instead increase it. *So do you think what ever enhancement MS is doing in the products is only for selling purpose, not a real use ?? and I think also keep the developer busy learning the new tools and features. * I am sure some some people here will argue that some people need this sort of features. But I am not talking about NASA or MI5 guys. I am talking of usual businesses and joe public. Any ideas welcome.

• Are Intel compilers really better than Microsoft ones?

  Years ago I was surprised when discovered that Intel sells Studio compatible compilers. I tried it in particular for C/C++ as well as fantastic diagnostic tools. But the code was simply not that computationally intensive to notice the difference. The only impression was: did Intel really did it for me just now, Wow, amazing tools with nanoseconds resolution, unbeleivable. But the trial ended and team never seriously considered a purchase. From your experience, if license cost does not matter, which vendor is a winner ? It is not broad or vague question or attemt to spark a holy war. This sort of question about 2 very visible tools. Nobody likes when tools have any mysteries or surprises. And choices between best and best are always the pain. I also understand the "grass greener" argument. I want to hear all "what ifs" stories. What if Intel just locally optimizes it for the chip stepping of the month, and not every hardware target will actually work as well as Microsoft compiled ? What if AMD hardware is the target and everything will slow down for no reason ? Or on other hand, what if Intel's hardware has so many unnoticable opportunities, that Microsoft compiler writers are too slow to adopt and never implement in the compiler ? What if both are the same exactly, actually a single codebase just wrapped into 2 different boxes and licensed to both vendors by some 3rd party shop? And so on. But someone knows some answers.

• Update Since Microsoft/PSC Office Open XML Case Study

  In 2009 Microsoft released a case study about a project that we had done using the OOXML SDK 1.0 for Research Directors Inc.  Since that time Microsoft has released version 2.0 of the SDK and PSC has done significant development with it.  Below are some of the mile stones we have reached since the original case study. At the time of the original case study two report types had been automated to output as PowerPoint presentations.  Now that the all the main products have been delivered we have added three reports with Word document outputs and five more reports with PowerPoint outputs. One improvement we made over the original application was to create a PowerPoint Add-In which allows the users to tag a slide.  These tags along with the strongly typed SDK 2.0 allows for the code to use LINQ to easily search for slides in the template files.  This allows for a more flexible architecture base on assembling a presentation from copied slide extracted from the template. The new library we created also enabled us to create two new Word based reports in two weeks.  The library we created abstracts the generation of the documents from the business logic and the data retrieval.  The key to this is the mark up.  Content Controls are a good method for identifying sections of a template to be modified or replaced.  Join this with the concept of all data being generically either scalar or two dimensional and the code becomes more generic. • URL structure for content that is updated daily

  A small, simple site I am working on displays a single page with the day's best offers on it. The user is able to move back and forth between previous days. Which of the following URL structures works best? Structure 1 /index.html -- today's best offers /2013-06-29.html -- yesterday's best offers, etc. Structure 2 /index.html -- 302 redirects to /2013-06-30.html (or whatever today is) /2013-06-30.html -- today's best offers /2013-06-29.html -- yesterday's best offers, etc. I quite like structure 2 from the user's point of view (they can share content easily), but I am a bit concerned about updating the redirect from /index.html every single day -- would this perhaps have unintended SEO consequences?

• RAID1: can't replace faulty spare (marked again as 'faulty spare' within seconds)

  I got a problem that I cannot solve: Our fileserver runs XUbuntu and 3 RAID1s. One has a problem since monday: it consists of sdb and sdc. sdb was marked as faulty by mdadm for unknown reasons. I used --remove to remove it from the RAID and then to add it by --add. All was fine, re-syncing started but never got above 0% and after a few seconds, sdb was again marked as 'faulty spare' (and therefore the RAID degraded, but clean). So I saved the first 512 byte of the old sdb to a file, bought a new HDD of same size (4TB), shut down the computer and replaced sdb physically, switched the computer back on and wrote the 512 byte back to the new drive to have the same partition info as the old drive (both are the same type, from same company). But the new drive shows the same behaviour as the old: I can add, re-syncing starts and after a few seconds its marked as 'faulty spare'. • Why does Windows/Microsoft Updates always take such a long time to detect available updates?

  It's a common task for many of us who work in any form of IT position using Windows. Eventually you have to install/re-install a version of Windows and what follows is a very long OS updating process. For a long time I have accepted the fact that this is a slow process and that's all there is to it. There is a lot to download, and some updates require restarts followed by further updates... Ugh! This morning I had to go through the process of installing Windows XP with SP3. I'm installing the OS on a VM on an SSD and I've been working on this thing for over 6 hours. Although, think there are many ways to knit-pick this process for improvements, there is one step that is always particularly slow and I can not figure out a good reason why. That step is the detection step on a manual update. Specifically, when navigate to the Windows (or Microsoft) Updates page, and then click the 'Custom' button to detect your updates. It appears that your PC just sits there for a painful amount of time. Check your Task Manager and it looks like your PC is, in fact, locked because your CPU isn't cooking but that's certainly not the case. Somethings happening but I have no clue what's going on? What is the updating software doing? If the registry was being searched, shouldn't my CPU usage peak? Does anybody know what's happening? I can loosely justify why some of the steps in the update process take so long. However, this one doesn't seem to have any reasoning.

• In an online questionnaire, what is a best way to design a database for keeping track of users all attempts?

  We have a web app where users can take online exams. Exam admin will create a questionnaire. A questionnaire can have many Questions. Each question is a multiple choice question (MCQ). Lets say an admin creates a questionnaire with 10 questions. Users attempt those questions. Now, unlike real exams users can attempt single questionnaire multiple times. And we have to keep track of his all attempts. e.g. User_id Questionnaire_id question_id answer attempt_date attempt_no 1 1 1 a 1 June 2013 1 1 1 2 b 1 June 2013 1 1 1 1 c 2 June 2013 2 1 1 2 d 2 June 2013 2 Now it can also happen that after user has attempted same questionnare twice, admin can delete a question from same questionnaire, but users attempt history should still have reference to that so that user can see his that question in his attempt history in spite of admin deleting that question. If user now attempts this changed questionnaire he should see only 1 question. User_id Questionnaire_id question_id answer attempt_date attempt_no 1 1 1 a 3 June 2013 3 Also, after this user modified some part of question, users attempt history should show question before modification while any new attempt should show modified question. How do we manage this at the database level? My first gut feeling was that, For deletes, do not do physical delete, just make a question inactive so that history can still keep track of users attempt. For modifications, create versions for questions and each new attempt refres to latest version of each question and history keeping reference to version of question at attempt time.
