• Website Live Chat Script - Interface With Windows Live Messenger?

  Hello again fellow StackOverflow users! What I am looking for currently is your opinions on the what the best live chat script would be for my website. I'd be using this on both my local computer repair (which I've not really set up yet) company's site, as well as my other technical support site that is geared more towards showing people how to fix whatever problem they have themselves. It'll be a little bit before I launch it on either site, as I need to find a good design for my local computer repair company's site, as well as redesign TweaksForGeeks.com's layout so that it's more magazine like. (If you have any suggestions on good Wordpress templates for these, that'd also be swell. :) ) Features I'd like for the live chat script to have: (if possible) Real-time posting of messages (or as close to real time as possible) Integration into my Windows Live Messenger account - By this I mean it'd be handy if instead of me having to man a separate open browser window and constantly check it for new messages, it'd be much more convenient if it would instead just allow me to receive and respond to messages via my Windows Live account the same way I'd chat with any other person on my contact list. Sound notification of new messages when the chat isn't the focused window - In the event that using Windows Messenger isn't possible then I'd need it to notify me upon receipt of a new message. Recording of chat transcripts - This is a MUST HAVE Easy customization - I'll likely want to modify how it looks and whatnot, in addition to the fact that I'm going to set it up so that the chat transcripts can be posted to my site easily in order to be useful to my other visitors later on. With all that in mind, what is available out there? I've not really researched this at all yet; aside from doing a cursory search just before I decided to ask my StackOverflow brothers. • Windows 7 PC browsers having trouble to open certain sites but not others

  Hi, My Win7 PC these days acting very weird: Examples: It can not open bing.com, alexa.com, msdn.microsoft.com (blank page or page can not be found); It can open zdnet.com but lost all CSS layouts and pictures; It can open stackoverflow and Google no problem; I tried all three browsers (IE8, Chrome, Firefox 3.6) same thing. I didn't change anything on this PC in days. This PC does have Anti-Virus installed and updated. I'm also pretty sure it's not a network problem, because my other laptops are just fine at the same time. The only thing I can think of is it might be some auto-update stuff underneath happened without my knowledge, but I have no idea where to troubleshoot? Please shed some lights for me? Thanks a lot.

• How to install Windows 7 on Acer Aspire iDea 500?

  I've got a Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit from MSDN Subscriber Downloads. The downloaded ISO boots fine from both a USB pen drive and a DVD on other computers. On the Acer it doesn't boot. The Acer iDea 500 can boot, and install, Windows XP Mediacenter from a DVD with slipstreamed SATA drives on it. Also, all kinds of Linux distros works perfectly fine on the iDea 500. I wouldn't mind using Mythbuntu instead of Windows 7 Ultimate, but it doesn't work very well.

• How to make addin visible on toolbar by script or batch process?

  I have an addin for Excel 2003. I tried to use MSDN's vbs script to make it installed, see my previous post question. It seems working as addin, but it does not displayed on toolbar when it is first installed on a box. What I have to do is to go to Tools-Add-Ins.. to uncheck my addin, for example myAddin, and then go back to the same dialog window again to check it. I think there must be somewhere Excel has config settings in xml or registry? Any way to run a script to set this addin visible in toolbar?

• After adding data files to a file group Is there a way to distribute the data into the new files?

  I have a database in a single file group, with a single file group. I've added 7 data files to this file group. Is there a way to rebalance the data over the 8 data files other than by telling sql server to empty the original? If this is the only way, is it possible to allow sql server to start writing to this file? MSDN says that once its empty its marked so no new data will be written to it. What I'm aiming for is 8 equally balanced data files. I'm running SQL Server 2005 standard edition. Thanks

• Permit Communicator to display an web site with an ActiveX control in Vista or Windows 7

However, the ActiveX content is not displayed in Vista or Window 7. I've tried relaxing the security settings to no avail. Any suggestions or guidance would be much appreciated.

• Creating a new Active Directory account with an InfoPath form

  I am setting up a business partner portal in our Sharepoint server. There will be an AD group with permissions limited to viewing and possibly contributing to the specific business partner site and employees of our business partners will have accounts created for them as needed. Now we would like to let our business development group(BDG) have control over the partner accounts. Ideally they should be able to add and delete accounts and change permissions on them. The BDG are not domain admins so we don't want to give them access to the domain controller. We want to create an Infopath form that will allow them to do all this. Is it possible to create and manage AD accounts from within an Infopath form on the sharepoint server? I searched this site and MSDN and can not find anything specifically related to my question.

• Why is my DB read-only when attached to SQL Express, but not with SQL Web?

  I have an .mdf/.ldf pair, originally created in 2008 R2 Standard, and well under 10GB, with ACLs: d:\db snapshot\DB_NAME.mdf SERVERNAME\SQLServerMSSQLUser$ACCOUNT$MSSQLSERVER:F OWNER RIGHTS:F BUILTIN\Administrators:F d:\db snapshot\DB_NAME_log.ldf SERVERNAME\SQLServerMSSQLUser$ACCOUNT$MSSQLSERVER:F OWNER RIGHTS:F BUILTIN\Administrators:F When I attach the database to an instance of SQL Express 2008 R2, it comes up as read-only. When exactly the same acls and user-accounts and SQLCMD statements are set up with SQL Web 2008 R2, it comes up writable. I looked at MSDN's comparison page but nothing jumped out at me. Why on earth is this happening? Thanks! UPDATE I just noticed that the name of the attached databases are different. On SQL Express (read-only) it matches the filename (e.g. DB_NAME); on SQL Web (writable) it matches the CUSTOM_NAME that I gave it in the attach command: CREATE DATABASE [CUSTOM_NAME] ON (FILENAME = 'PATH_TO_MDF'), (FILENAME = 'PATH_TO_LDF') FOR ATTACH

• SQL Server 2012 and SQLMail - will it still work?

  We are considering upgrading our SQL Server, which is currently running 2005. We use SQLMail heavily in the organization, both to send e-mails and to import some into a database. I've read on various places that SQLMail was deprecated and superseded by "Database Mail". I'm confused because this MS page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb402904.aspx seems to imply that it would still work? I understand the dangers of SQLMail but we do not have the resources to rewrite the scripts right now and would prefer to do it later on. Does SQLMail still work in 2012, and if not, how easy is it to replace with Database Mail, both for reading and sending e-mails?

• How to best config my PC. 2 small SDDs and a 1TB conventional drive

  I just got a new PC. It has 3 drives C Drive: 80GB SDD Drive P Drive: 120GB SDD (for core programs) D Drive: 1TB SDD (for data and other) I have an MSDN subscription and I am the type of person that loves to install tons of software to check it out. I am very worried that installation programs are forcing me to place a large amount of files on the small C drive. I fear that I will quickly run out of space on my C drive while having ample space on my TB drive. What would you do in my shoes? I didn't select this PC or set the config up. I am wishing that the 120 SSD was my C, to give me a little more room to grow. I guess there are no magic solutions here but I am just looking for your general thoughts

• How would one run a task sequence within a task sequence in SCCM 2012 SP1

  A Shining Example: Inside all of my task sequences I have a group that installs driver packages conditionally based on computer model: And of course, this list does nothing but grow. The fact that it grows isn't a big deal, what is a big deal is that every time it changes I have to manually copy and paste those changes across every task sequence I have, which of course leaves huge room for human error. The same goes for other groups of tasks that are common across task sequences. Looking for a solution where I could centrally manage these tasks, be it link other task sequences to a group within another task sequence, or create a separate task sequence and link to that. I came across a solution by John Marcum (SCCM MVP) that mentioned this ability, but this was a while ago and I can't find the link to it anymore to see if it's even still being updated/maintained, but I'm looking for more of a free solution, or even using Powershell or the ConfigMgr SDK is fine with me, I'm no stranger to either. • Internet Explorer Automation: how to suppress Open/Save dialog?

  When controlling IE instance via MSHTML, how to suppress Open/Save dialogs for non-HTML content? I need to get data from another system and import it into our one. Due to budget constraints no development (e.g. WS) can be done on the other side for some time, so my only option for now is to do web scrapping. The remote site is ASP.NET-based, so simple HTML requests won't work -- too much JS. I wrote a simple C# application that uses MSHTML and SHDocView to control an IE instance. So far so good: I can perform login, navigate to desired page, populate required fields and do submit. Then I face a couple of problems: First is that report is opening in another window. I suspect I can attach to that window too by enumerating IE windows in the system. Second, more troublesome, is that report itself is CSV file, and triggers Open/Save dialog. I'd like to avoid it and make IE save the file into given location OR I'm fine with programmatically clicking dialog buttons too (how?) I'm actually totally non-Windows guy (unix/J2EE), and hope someone with better knowledge would give me a hint how to do those tasks. Thanks! UPDATE I've found a promising document on MSDN: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/aa770041.aspx Control the kinds of content that are downloaded and what the WebBrowser Control does with them once they are downloaded. For example, you can prevent videos from playing, script from running, or new windows from opening when users click on links, or prevent Microsoft ActiveX controls from downloading or executing. Slowly reading through... UPDATE 2: MADE IT WORK, SORT OF... Finally I made it work, but in an ugly way. Essentially, I register a handler "before navigate", then, in the handler, if the URL is matching my target file, I cancel the navigation, but remember the URL, and use WebClient class to access and download that temporal URL directly. • Cannot call DLL import entry in C# from C++ project. EntryPointNotFoundException

  I'm trying to call from C# a function in a custom DLL written in C++. However I'm getting the warning during code analysis and the error at runtime: Warning: CA1400 : Microsoft.Interoperability : Correct the declaration of 'SafeNativeMethods.SetHook()' so that it correctly points to an existing entry point in 'wi.dll'. The unmanaged entry point name currently linked to is SetHook. Error: System.EntryPointNotFoundException was unhandled. Unable to find an entry point named 'SetHook' in DLL 'wi.dll'. Both projects wi.dll and C# exe has been compiled in to the same DEBUG folder, both files reside here. There is only one file with the name wi.dll in the whole file system.   How to get micro second resolution timestamps on windows? I am loking for something better than QueryPerformanceCounter, QueryPerformanceFrequency (these can only give you an elapsed time since boot, and are not necessarily accurate if they are called on different threads - ie QueryPerformanceCounter may return different results on different CPUs. There are also some processors that adjust their frequency for power saving, which apparently isn't always reflected in their QueryPerformanceFrequency result.) • Best way to reformat/recover in Windows when your CD key is no longer valid?

  I have a copy of Windows 7 Professional that I have downloaded from the MSDN e-academy (thanks to my school). Now, the problem is that these license keys are one-use only. If I need to reformat or do a factory reset, what is the best way for me to do so, without invalidating my license and screwing me out of an operating system? Edit: I would also like to know some information on the "restore to factory settings" option in Windows 7 recovery center. Does it do exactly as the name implies and starts you off as if you had just done a fresh install? If I had some kind of nasty trojan or virus, would it be able to survive through the factory reset? The recovery center also has an option for reformatting, though I don't think that it's an actual format - it just backs up your stuff into a Windows.old folder or something like that. Does that require a valid license key?

  I've got a scheduled task set up in my Windows 7 machine which is meant to run a BAT file when I'm not around, i.e. the machine has been idle for 15 minutes. Does anyone know how to track down the cause of the error code ? Checked on MSDN and it says ... SCHED_E_TASK_ATTEMPTED 0x80041324 The Task Scheduler service attempted to run the task, but the task did not run due to one of the constraints in the task definition. And to confuse me even further, I've just noticed it has run while I'm at the machine with last result (0x0)

• How to customize the process employed by WCF when serializing contract method arguments?

  Dear ladies and sirs. I would like to formulate a contrived scenario, which nevertheless has firm actual basis. Imagine a collection type COuter, which is a wrapper around an instance of another collection type CInner. Both implement IList (never mind the T). Furthermore, a COuter instance is buried inside some object graph, the root of which (let us refer to it as R) is returned from a WCF service method. My question is how can I customize the WCF serialization process, so that when R is returned, the request to serialize the COuter instance will be routed through my code, which will extract CInner and pass it to the serializer instead. Thus the receiving end still gets R, only no COuter instance is found in the object graph. I hoped that http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2220516/how-does-wcf-serialize-the-method-call will contain the answer, unfortunately the article mentioned there (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163569.aspx) only barely mentions that advanced serialization scenarios are possible using IDataContractSurrogate interface, but no details are given. I am, on the other hand, would really like to see a working example. Thank you very much in advance.

• How to output multicolumn html without "widows"?

  I need to output to HTML a list of categorized links in exactly three columns of text. They must be displayed similar to columns in a newspaper or magazine. So, for example, if there are 20 lines total the first and second columns would contain 7 lines and the last column would contain 6. The list must be dynamic; it will be regularly changed. The tricky part is that the links are categorized with a title and this title cannot be a "widow". If you have a page layout background you'll know that this means the titles cannot be displayed at the bottom of the column -- they must have at least one link underneath them, otherwise they should bump to the next column (I know, technically it should be two lines if I were actually doing page layout, but in this case one is acceptable). I'm having a difficult time figuring out how to get this done. Here's an example of what I mean: Shopping Link 3 Link1 Link 1 Link 4 Link2 Link 2 Link 3 Link 3 Cars Link 1 Music Games Link 2 Link 1 Link 1 Link 2 News As you can see, the "News" title is at the bottom of the middle column, and so is a "widow". This is unacceptable. I could bump it to the next column, but that would create an unnecessarily large amount of white space at the bottom of the second column. What needs to happen instead is that the entire list needs to be re-balanced. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for how to accomplish this, or perhaps source code or a plug in. Python is preferable, but any language is fine. I'm just trying to get the general concept down.

• Paging not working in my wordpress installation

  I recently started a blog site and wanted to give it a magazine look. I used Wordpress for my blog and used the Arthemia theme with it. I also changed the permalink structure to point to /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/ structure. Now the problem that i have is that the paging has stopped working on my home page. When i click on the next page link i get a 404 error. My /page/2 url does not show the next page. I check on google and found out that it was due to the redirection that is being performed due to the permalink change. The solution given was that i need to skip the url rewriting for the /page/* urls. This is the link to an article which said this http://www.yoursearchadvisor.com/blog/wordpress-next_posts_link-broken/ . I was not able to follow this article and solve my problem, as i could not find the permanent redirect manager under the settings section as said in this article. Can somebody please guide me how to solve this problem. I am using the latest Wordpress version and Arthemia theme with it. Thanks.

  GRRRRRRRRRRRR!(#Y%)@#!! They bragged they now have a very easy installation! I don't get it. I entered the MSDN "Disk 5000: Developer Tools" DVD, opened default.htm, clicked on the "Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010" link. The VSTFS2010 folder open. I click autorun.exe. And then I get "Microsoft Visual Studio Agents 2010 Setup". I don't get it. Why "agents"? I wanted to instal a server!

• Migrate TFS 2010 Application Tier to another server on the same domain

  I'm in the process of looking into the possibility of moving our TFS 2010 Application Tier to another server from the one it is on at the moment so that we can repurpose the hardware. I've been looking through the Microsoft Documentation over at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms404869.aspx, but this assumes that everything is stored on one box (Application and Data tiers). In my setup however, our Data tier is separate to the Application tier and will be staying where it is. I think I should be able to do this but for my own peace of mind, would there be any issues or implications if I merely installed the Application Tier on the new hardware and then connected it to the existing data tier?

• Why not install Msvcr71.dll into system32?

  While looking for an authoritative source for the missing Msvcr71.dll that is needed by a few old applications, I stumbled across the MSDN article Redistribution of the shared C runtime component in Visual C++. The advice given to developers is to drop the DLL into the application's directory instead of system32 since DLLs in this directory are considered before the system paths. What can/will go wrong if I (as an administrator, not a developer) decide to take the lazy path and install Msvcr71.dll (and Msvcp71.dll while I'm at it) into the system32 directory (of 32 bit Windows XP or Windows 7 systems) instead of putting a copy in each application's directory? Is there another good solution to provide the applications with the needed DLLs that doesn't involve copying stuff to the application directories? added after first answers: I understand that incompatible API changes may have been made to the mentioned DLLs, but pretty much every mention of incompatibilities I have found using Google had to do with games or video codecs. Right now, I expect that the risk of breakage is pretty small. Am I missing something?
