• Grub not showing on startup for Windows 8.1 Ubuntu 13.10 Dual boot

  K im so a newbie to Ubuntu and i bought a Windows 8 pre-installed laptop last month. I updated to Windows 8.1 and then i thought about installing Ubuntu as a dual boot so i could mess around and learn more about it. So i followed a Youtube tutorial ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJfTvkgLqfQ ). And i got my stuff working fine. The first few times i booted i got the GRUB menu instead of my default HP Boot OS Manager, and i was able to select my OS. So i went to sleep and the next day i turned on my computer and the GRUB menu did not show up. I tried several times and it didnt automatically show up. In order for me to see the GRUB menu i had to turn on my PC and on start had to press ESC to pause startup and press F9 to get boot options. Then from there i had to pick from OS Boot, Ubuntu, Ubuntu (Yes there were two Ubuntus available) and a default EFI file thingy. When i click the first Ubuntu i get the GRUB Menu (I was too scared to try the second incase i screwed my laptop up) and i can safely load Ubuntu from there and use it (although i do have to increase my brightness everytime i load Ubuntu bec it somehow reduces my brightness to complete darkness on boot) So my problem here is why isnt my GRUB showing on boot, after it worked on the first day? I was on Windows 8.1 while typing this and if you have any questions or answers, i will happily answer or use them as a solution to the best of my abilities. BTW my laptop is a HP TouchSmart j-078CA.

• After upgrading to 12.04 the scanner from Brother Printer MFC-290C does not work

  I upgraded Ubuntu to 12.04 from 11.10. The printer works, but the scanner doesn't now. In 11.10 I had to install a special driver from Brother. The printer's model is Brother MFC-290C. The computer is a Toshiba Satellite. How can I get the scanner working? Update: I have a 64-bit installation on the Toshiba Satellite. Thank you for your instructions, Chad--24216. I followed each step: 1 through 5. I also updated the Brother Linux scanner S-KEY tool. • Does not recognize usb sticks and drives

  When connecting any usb stick to my thinkpad ubuntu 10.10 does not recognize them. • Hancon / Hanwang Graphics Tablet not recognised

  I'm totally lost. I've just built a new system and installed Ubuntu 12.04. It's my first time with Linux and getting into the terminal / command line for the first time since IBMDOS 5 and Windows 3.1 has been a steep learning curve. However, the interface works beautifully apart from it doesn't recognize my Hanvon Artmaster AM1209. I have sent diagnostics to Digimend and Favux was kind enough to advise that the tablet should be using the Wacom X driver as the Hanvon is actually a Hanwang and these should be supported. lsusb reports: ID 0b57:8501 Beijing HanwangTechnology Co., Ltd xinput list reports: ? Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ? Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)] ? ? PS/2+USB Mouse id=8 [slave pointer (2)] ? Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)] ? Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)] ? Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)] ? Power Button id=7 [slave keyboard (3)] ? Eee PC WMI hotkeys id=9 [slave keyboard (3)] ? AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=10 [slave keyboard (3)] Favux suggested inspecting /var/log/Xorg.0.log for the tablet but I cannot see any mention of it, and that is as far as I have got. I've tried researching the problem but I am struggling with all the new terminology and the fact that I want the PC to be a means to an end and not the end in itself where I spend the rest of my days tweaking and testing rather than just using it. Hope there is some help out there.

• My old Conchango blog posts are currently not accessible

  Some of you reading this may be aware that I used to blog at http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson. That URL later changed to http://consultingblogs.emc.com/jamiethomson after Conchango (my employer) got taken over by EMC. In my last post on that site: I stated that I had 676 blog posts on that site. Unfortunately, as of today, those 676 posts are inaccessible. If you try to get to http://consultingblogs.emc.com/jamiethomson today you will see this: I am not the only one affected either; it seems that EMC have taken the same action for many blog sites of my old colleagues (e.g. http://consultingblogs.emc.com/merrickchaffer is also inaccessible). Early indications are that EMC have removed all blog posts by any former employees although that is yet to be confirmed.   A few of us former employees are endeavouring to get this situation rectified so watch this space. I am aware that many people in the SSIS community still refer to those old blog posts so please be aware that any attempt to access any of them will be futile for the foreseeable future. @Jamiet

• This update does not come from a source that supports changelogs

  When I get an update via update-manager for a software like blender/vlc, I like to see what has been fixed/changed. I added the ppa for blender/vlc (this only applies to the software I added a ppa for) sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cheleb/blender-svn sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install blender And vlc like this. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install vlc And when i run update-manager, or update manager pop-ups I see that vlc/blender have updates but, I can't see what has been changed/fixed this is the message I get, the screenshot below is for mupen but it's the same thing. (I updated vlc and blender, didn't wanna wait for the next update) This update does not come from a source that supports changelogs. (by the way I have a dutch Ubuntu, so the above text i Google translated it!) It only shows which version you have and to which version you be upgrading to. So my question is, how do I get the change-log tab of update-manager working. if it's even possible?

• Why is TDD not working here?

  I want to write a class A that has a method calculate(<params>). That method should calculate a value using database data. So I wrote a class Test_A for unit testing (TDD). The database access is done using another class which I have mocked with a class, let's call it Accessor_Mockup. Now, the TDD cycle requires me to add a test that fails and make the simplest changes to A so that the test passes. So I add data to Accessor_Mockup and call A.calculate with appropriate parameters. But why should A use the accessor class at all? It would be simpler (!) if the class just "knows" the values it could retrieve from the database. For every test I write I could introduce such a new value (or an if-branch or whatever). But wait ... TDD is more. There is the refactoring part. But that sounds to me like "OK, I can do this all with a big if-elseif construct. I could refactor it using a new class ... but instead I make use of the DB accessor and do this in a totally different way. The code will not necessarily look better afterwards but I know I WANT to use the database".

• Grub options are not visible on booting on Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite running Ubuntu 14.04

  I've managed to install Ubuntu 14.04 on my new Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite ultrabook. After updating some configuratiosn in the UEFI installation was very easy. The only questions and issue I believe I'm still experience is when booting. I believe when the laptop would be displaying the grub boot options I see the following. There is a black screen with a purple border of 10px around the screen. I'd like to know how I can update my system so that I see the grub boot manager. • Website hosted at home pingable from outside, but not browseable from outside

  I have a simple setup. Server at home has local I.P. 192.168.1.3 IIS is running on the server and the website is up. Windows firewall on the server has an exception rule for port 80 TCP Router has static I.P. XX.XXX.XX.XXX Router is forwarding TCP port 80 to 192.168.1.3 My domain registrar is my DNS host and is pointing to the static I.P. XX.XXX.XX.XXX of the router Here's what I can and can't do. I can browse the website from within my home network either by I.P. or domain name. I can ping the domain and the I.P. from outside the network (from a computer at work). I can't browse the website either by domain name or by I.P. Wierd. Why I can't browse my website? Incidentally, I wasn't sure this question was appropriate for SO, but after finding a few others similar to it on SO, and no comments on those questions saying anything about it being innapropriate, I decided I would post this question. Let me know if this is not appropriate for SO, or is more appropriate for another of the SE websites. Thanks!

• 'Content' is NOT 'Text' in XAML

  One of the key concepts in XAML is that the Content property of a XAML control like a Button or ComboBoxItem does not have to contain just textual data. In fact, Content can be almost any other XAML that you want. To illustrate here is a simple example of how to spruce up your Button controls in Silverlight. Here is some very simple XAML that consists of two Button controls within a StackPanel on a Silverlight User Control. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          HorizontalAlignment="Left"          Content="Home" />  <Button Name="btnLog"          HorizontalAlignment="Left"          Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> The XAML listed above will produce a Silverlight control within a Browser that looks like Figure 1.   Figure 1: Normal button controls are quite boring. With just a little bit of refactoring to move the button attributes into Styles, we can make the buttons look a little better. I am a big believer in Styles, so I typically create a Resources section within my user control where I can factor out the common attribute settings for a particular set of controls. Here is a Resources section that I added to my Silverlight user control. <UserControl.Resources>  <Style TargetType="Button"         x:Key="NormalButton">    <Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment"            Value="Left" />    <Setter Property="MinWidth"            Value="50" />    <Setter Property="Margin"            Value="10" />  </Style></UserControl.Resources> Now back in the XAML within the Grid control I update the Button controls to use the Style attribute and have each button use the Static Resource called NormalButton. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}"          Content="Home" />  <Button Name="btnLog"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}"          Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> With the additional attributes set in the Resources section on the Button, the above XAML will now display the two buttons as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2: Use Resources to Make Buttons More Consistent Now let’s re-design these buttons even more. Instead of using words for each button, let’s replace the Content property to use a picture. As they say… a picture is worth a thousand words, so let’s take advantage of that. Modify each of the Button controls and eliminate the Content attribute and instead, insert an <Image> control with the <Button> and the </Button> tags. Add a ToolTip to still display the words you had before in the Content and you will now have better looking buttons, as shown in Figure 3.   Figure 3: Using pictures instead of words can be an effective method of communication The XAML to produce Figure 3 is shown in the following listing: <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Home"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"            Source="Images/Home.jpg" />  </Button>  <Button Name="btnLog"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Logs"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"            Source="Images/Log.jpg" />  </Button></StackPanel> You will also need to add the following XAML to the User Control’s Resources section. <Style TargetType="Image"        x:Key="NormalImage">  <Setter Property="Width"          Value="50" /></Style> Add Multiple Controls to Content Now, since the Content can be whatever we want, you could also modify the Content of each button to be a StackPanel control. Then you can have an image and text within the button. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Home"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <StackPanel>      <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"              Source="Images/Home.jpg" />      <TextBlock Text="Home"                  Style="{StaticResource NormalTextBlock}" />    </StackPanel>  </Button>  <Button Name="btnLog"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Logs"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <StackPanel>      <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"              Source="Images/Log.jpg" />      <TextBlock Text="Logs"                  Style="{StaticResource NormalTextBlock}" />    </StackPanel>  </Button></StackPanel> You will need to add one more resource for the TextBlock control too. <Style TargetType="TextBlock"        x:Key="NormalTextBlock">  <Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment"          Value="Center" /></Style> All of the above will now produce the following:   Figure 4: Add multiple controls to the content to make your buttons even more interesting. Summary While this is a simple example, you can see how XAML Content has great flexibility. You could add a MediaElement control as the content of a Button and play a video within the Button. Not that you would necessarily do this, but it does work. What is nice about adding different content within the Button control is you still get the Click event and other attributes of a button, but it does necessarily look like a normal button. We called it ... How to Deploy Oracle RAC on Zone Clusters Welllllll ... we just published another article just like it. Except that it's different. The earlier article was for Oracle RAC 11.2.0.2. This one is for Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3. This one describes how to do the same thing as the earlier one --create an Oracle Solaris Zone cluster, install and configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure and Oracle RAC in the zone cluster, and create an Oracle Solaris Cluster resource for Oracle RAC-- but for version 11.2.0.3 of Oracle RAC. Even though the objective is the same, and the version is only a dot-dot-dot release away, the process is quite different. • Syslog/kernlog filling up with "did not claim interface N before use"

  As I discovered when asking this question, it appears that demond_nscan is trying to use a device without claiming it. And it does it.... hundreds of time per second apparently. This makes kern.log and syslog huge (100GB ). In this particular case the problem is directly a result of some Lexmark drivers that were installed (found at /usr/local/lexmark/unix_scan_drivers/bin/demond_nscan). Here are a few things I know: The drivers are for an all-in-one printer/scanner device. There was a previous lexmark printer-only that was installed with CUPS This driver was the one for CUPS systems, and I think that it automatically added it to the list of printers in CUPS. The issue started spamming kern/syslog only after these drivers were installed, using the lexmark installers While googling around I found this thread that's not completely related, but it does mention that it might be happening when two drivers try to control the same device at the same time. How can I resolve this issue so that either I only have one driver, or get the driver to claim the device before usage?

• Atheros wireless not working

  I have been struggling hard since i have installed Ubuntu 10.10 but it has been difficult for me to get my wifi working. So here is what i tried. First i checked whether i have the driver using the ifconfig command and it shows the wireless lan driver as wlan0. Next, i tried the command iwlist wlan0 scanning by becoming the root which gave me the output as no scan results. Next, i visited this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Atheros to see as to what problem my laptop may have. I do own have an ath5k chipset. And as i followed the instructions in the above link in one of the blacklist-ath_pci.conf file had this written in it. For some Atheros 5K RF MACs, the madwifi driver loads buts fails to correctly initialize the hardware, leaving it in a state from which ath5k cannot recover. To prevent this condition, stop madwifi from loading by default. Use Jockey to select one driver or the other. (Ubuntu: #315056, #323830 I am not that good at Linux but i have given it a try. • BizTalk Pipeline Component Error: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

  Yesterday I posted about my BizTalk Archiving Pipeline Component, which can be found on Codeplex if anyone is interested in taking a look. During testing of this component I began to encounter an error whereby the component would throw an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error when processing as a part of a Custom Pipeline. This was occurring when the component was reading a ReadOnlySeekableStream so that the data can be archived to file, but the actual code throwing the error was somewhere in the depths of the Microsoft.BizTalk.Streaming stack. It turns out that there is a known issue where this exception can be thrown because the garbage collector has disposed of of the stream before execution of the custom pipeline has completed. • Banshee music file copy to Mac iPhone 4s ios5.1 not permanent

  In Ubuntu 12.04 - When I drag .mp3 files from Banshee 2.6 to my Mac-formatted iPhone 4s ios5.1: a. Banshee says it's syncing with the phone, updating the media database, and the filecount on the phone is incremented; b. The files show up under the device in Banshee and I can play them; c. I can see them on the iPhone in a file browser; d. I can navigate to the iPhone filesystem in a terminal and create a file, so I know I have write permissions. When I disconnect the device in Banshee, it again tells me it's syncing the phone and updating the media database, but I can't find the songs on the phone in iTunes - they are not there when I reconnect the phone to my computer. Am I just being deceived by gvfs? I haven't been able to find a recent post indicating the status of syncing ios5.x devices with Banshee, RhythmBox, etc... Can someone tell me if this should work? Also, I wonder if my iPhone needs to be formatted/initialized by iTunes for Windows, since it has been managed on a Mac? I solved a syncing problem with an older ipod classic which had been managed by iTunes on a Mac, by re-initializing it under iTunes for Windows - perhaps an hfs+ issue. Thanks for any help.

It is the standard Python interface to the Tk GUI toolkit1 and is Python's de facto standard GUI,2 and is included with the standard Windows and Mac OS X install of Python." - Not good, that it isn't included in Ubuntu as well. • Bridged VM guest does not get IPv6 prefix

  I have a similar problem and setup as described in IPv6 does not work over bridge. My host get a IPv6 prefix but the guest VM only gets a local fe80-prefix. • Apache Not Accepting a Path in My Home Folder

  I have trying to set up an Apache site to use a folder in my home folder without any success. I exactly followed the steps in this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP yet I did not succeed; I keep getting error 403, which says that the server doesn't have permission to access the requested page. I searched forums and many suggested changing the permission of the folder. I went straight away and set the permission to 777, but that didn't solve the problem. I made another search and somebody gave me a clue, which is that it could be because my home folder is encrypted. I believe this could be the problem, but: What is the relation between encryption and Apache? I suppose Apache server is requesting the file from the system, rather than trying to access the file bytes! Is there anyway to solve this problem? I don't want to move the folder to /var/www because I am using this Apache for testing, so I want whatever change I make to be immediately reflected, rather than having to copy files which is error prone.

• New install of Steam not running on new install of Ubuntu 13.10

  I tried purging steam, un-installing and reinstalling steam, deleting /home/.steam/share/steam/appcache/, deleting everything in /home/.steam/share/steam/ and nothing helped. I installed Ubuntu, then steam into it directly afterward. I installed steam from Ubuntu Software Centre, launched it, it updated 206MB, then closed. When I tried to launch it again, it momentarily flashes the checking for update dialogue, then closes every time. Then (in an unrelated event) Ubuntu said some system updates are necessary and one of them was Steam launcher. I did the update, tried to launch Steam; same story. Really need help on this, as I did a complete re-isntall of Ubuntu, then Steam again and it did not help at all.
