• What can explain std::cout not to display anything ?

  For whatever reason, std::cout does not display anything with my application. The description of my development environment follows. I am working on a Qt application using Qt Creator. Since Qt Creator can't be launched from my station (XP64), i am currently developping it with Visual Studio 2008 and the Qt plugin (by importing the .pro project file). Everything seems fine and the application works. In some cases (depending on command line arguments), i don't want to launch the HIM, just to display a few sentences in the CLI (command line required arguments, for instance). I don't get any error, but nothing is displayed. The corresponding code, which i am sure is run is the (classical) following : std::cout << "is this going to be displayed ?" << std::endl; Do you have any idea why nothing is displayed ?

• Setting a VCProject property to default

  I'm trying some VS2005 IDE macros to modify a large amount of projects (~80) within a solution. Some of the properties I wish to set do expose a programmatic interface to 'default', but many others do not. Is there a generic way to set such properties to their default? • Game-a-Week One

  Anyone who chats with me on a semi-regular basis knows I am absolutely horrible at completing something from beginnning to end.  Often times I'll begin something, lose interest at some point, and end up moving onto the next thing.  For example, I have 1/2 a full game created, 1/3 of a novel written, and half of a model set created.  Needless to say, unless I have some sort of pressure to finish something I don't stick to it. Recently however one of my online buddies challenged me to create a simple game.  The start date was last Thursday and the final game needed to be delivered by this next Sunday (giving me just over a week).  However, I am going out of town this Friday so will need to deliver it by Thursday, giving me exactly 1 week to develop a game.  Here is what the game needed to include: The player should be able to shoot Shooting things should score points Sounds very simple, but given a single week to produce all art assets plus the game isn't an easy task.  So far I've developed: An animated Main Menu that loads via script files, allows the user to start a new game or exit the game The game is 3D and the player can move around the play area with an 'over-the-shoulder' camera HUD elements are drawn to display the player's current score When the player presses Esc they are shown a pause menu where they can resume the game by pressing Esc again, or quit the game by pressing Space There are also 2 items implemented that don't work perfectly: JigLibX physics library implementation On the main menu there is an arrow symbol that rotates to always point at your mouse I've got 2 days of development left so hopefully I can get collision working, some of the art cleaned up, and some more of the camera functionality working.  Also, I'll need to take some time to package the game up which hopefully shouldn't take too long.

• Upgrade won't allow second display to go to 1920x1080

  I just upgraded to 10.10 last night and I'm having issues now with dual display from my laptop dock. This was working in the previous release with a manual xrandr command: xrandr --output LVDS1 --off --output DP1 --mode 1920x1080 && xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080 --left-of DP1 When I run this now, the DP1 output doesn't have a mode for 1920x1080. The two displays are a matched pair of dell 22" that are both 1920x1080. When I attempt to manually add the mode xrandr --addmode DP1 1920x1080 and rerun my command, I lose both displays altogether. I have to then blindly reset to just one of them in order to get display back. If I avoid the 1920 and just attempt to setup DP1 at the 1280x1024 max it thinks it has, then the second display will come up, but obviously looks horrible since it's non-native resolution.   Edwin Biemond is an active member of the ACE community, having worked with Oracle's development tooling and database technologies since 1997. Since then, Edwin has become an expert in many of Oracle's middleware technologies as well, including WebLogic and SOA. • How do I mix functions in complex SSRS expressions?

  I'm writing a report against a data repository that has null values within some of the columns. The problem is building expressions is as temperamental as a hormonal old lady and doesn't like my mixing of functions. Here's an expression I've written that does not work if the data in the field is null/nothing: =IIF( IsNumeric(Fields!ADataField.Value), RunningValue( IIF( DatePart("q", Fields!CreatedOn.Value) = "2", Fields!ADataField.Value, 0 ), Sum, Nothing ), Sum(0) ) (Pseudocode) "If the data is valid and if the data was created in the second quarter of the year, add it to the overall Sum, otherwise, add zero to the sum." Looks pretty straight forward. And the individual pieces of the expression work by themselves. IE: IsNumeric(), DatePart(), etc. But when I put them all together, the expression throws an error. I've attempted about every permutation of what's shown above, all to no avail. Null values in Fields!ADataField.Value cause errors. Thoughts?

• Memory in Eclipse

  I'm getting the java.lang.OutOfMemoryError exception in Eclipse. I know that Eclipse by default uses heap size of 256M. I'm trying to increase it but nothing happens. For example: eclipse -vmargs -Xmx16g -XX:PermSize=2g -XX:MaxPermSize=2g I also tried different settings, using only the -Xmx option, using different cases of g, G, m, M, different memory sizes, but nothing helps. Does not matter which params I specify, the heap exception is thrown at the same time, so I assume there's something I'm doing wrong that Eclipse ignores the -Xmx parameter. I'm using a 32GB RAM machine and trying to execute something very simple such as: double[][] a = new double[15000][15000]; It only works when I reduce the array size to something around 10000 on 10000. I'm working on Linux and using the top command I can see how much memory the Java process is consuming; it's less than 2%. Thanks!

• Install Lubuntu w/o Disc or Flash Drive?

  My WinXP desktop was recently blasted with a few bits of malware. I removed the malware but the damage is done, and my OS is finally at its end; it's barely chugging along as it is. So, I'm figuring what I'd like to do is replace the OS with Lubuntu, which I know is a lightweight, heavily WinXP-esque distro of Linux. However, every article, every explanation, I've read online has stated I need either a 4+ GiB flash drive or a burnable CD. Well, I have a flash drive, but it's only 1 GiB; and I have a disc burner, but no disc. So, frankly, I doubt I'll be able to do it. But hey, I figured I might as well ask away here on AU; what have I got to lose? So my question is this: would it be possible to replace my WinXP OS w/ Lubuntu without using either a 4+ GiB flash drive or a burnable CD? Thanks very much. I appreciate any help you could give.

• Can an app use the clipboard for its own purposes? (read: who owns the clipboard?)

  In PowerBuilder's IDE, the code autocomplete feature uses the clipboard to communicate the completed text to the code window. By doing so, it overrides whatever was stored on the clipboard before. So, if you had the winning numbers of the next lottary stored on your clipboard, and you used the autocomplete to turn m_goodfor into m_goodfornothing, you've just lost your only chance of ever getting rich, and you're left with nothing on your clipboard. Features like that are the reason I hate software. It looks like it was implemented by some intern that noone was looking after. However, there's also a chance I got all worked up for nothing, and making such use of the clipboard is absolutely legit. So, can an app use the clipboard for its own purposes? Who is considered the owner of the clipboard? (Bonus votes to whoever puts himself in place of the feature's programmer, and provides some reasoning for this being done on purpose, assuming the users would actually benefite from it)

• Calculating collision force with AfterCollision/NormalImpulse is unreliable when IgnoreCCD = false?

  I'm using Farseer Physics Engine 3.3.1 in a very simple XNA 4 test game. (Note: I'm also tagging this Box2D, because Farseer is a direct port of Box2D and I will happily accept Box2D answers that solve this problem.) In this game, I'm creating two bodies. The first body is created using BodyFactory.CreateCircle and BodyType.Dynamic. This body can be moved around using the keyboard (which sets Body.LinearVelocity). The second body is created using BodyFactory.CreateRectangle and BodyType.Static. This body is static and never moves. Then I'm using this code to calculate the force of collision when the two bodies collide: staticBody.FixtureList[0].AfterCollision += new AfterCollisionEventHandler(AfterCollision); protected void AfterCollision(Fixture fixtureA, Fixture fixtureB, Contact contact) { float maxImpulse = 0f; for (int i = 0; i < contact.Manifold.PointCount; i++) maxImpulse = Math.Max(maxImpulse, contact.Manifold.Points[i].NormalImpulse); // maxImpulse should contain the force of the collision } This code works great if both of these bodies are set to IgnoreCCD=true. I can calculate the force of collision between them 100% reliably. Perfect. But here's the problem: If I set the bodies to IgnoreCCD=false, that code becomes wildly unpredictable. AfterCollision is called reliably, but for some reason the NormalImpulse is 0 about 75% of the time, so only about one in four collisions is registered. Worse still, the NormalImpulse seems to be zero for completely random reasons. The dynamic body can collide with the static body 10 times in a row in virtually exactly the same way, and only 2 or 3 of the hits will register with a NormalImpulse greater than zero. Setting IgnoreCCD=true on both bodies instantly solves the problem, but then I lose continuous physics detection. Why is this happening and how can I fix it? • Why am I getting this WSDL SOAP error with authorize.net?

  I have my script email me when there is a problem creating a recurring transaction with authorize.net. I received the following at 5:23AM Pacific time: SOAP-ERROR: Parsing WSDL: Couldn't load from 'https://api.authorize.net/soap/v1/service.asmx?wsdl' : failed to load external entity "https://api.authorize.net/soap/v1/service.asmx?wsdl" And of course, when I did exactly the same thing that the user did, it worked fine for me. Does this mean authorize.net's API is down? Their knowledge base simply sucks and provides no information whatsoever about this problem. I've contacted the company, but I'm not holding my breath for a response. Google reveals nothing. Looking through their code, nothing stands out. Maybe an authentication error? Has anyone seen an error like this before? What causes this?

• 2D/Isometric map algorithm

  First of all, I don't have much experience on game development but I do have experience on development. I do know how to make a map, but I don't know if my solution is a normal or a hacky solution. I don't want to waste my time coding things, and realise they're utterly crap and lose my motivation. Let's imagine the following map. (2D - top view - A square) X: 0 to 500 Y: 0 to 500 My character currently stands at X:250,Y:400, somewhere near center of 100px above bottom and I can control him with my keyboard buttons. LEFT button does X--, UP button does Y-- etc. This one is kid's play. I'm asking this because I know there are some engines that automate this task. For example, games like Diablo 3 uses an engine. You can pretty much drag drop a rock to map, and it is automatically being placed here - making player unable to pass through/detect the collision. But what the engine exactly does in the background? Generates a map like mine, places a rock at the center, and checks it like: unmovableObjects = array('50,50'); //we placed a rock at 50,50 location if(Map.hasUnmovableObject(CurrentPlayerX, CurrentPlayerY)) { //unable to move } else { //able to move } My question is: Is this how 2D/Isometric maps are being generated or there is a different and more complex logic behind them?

• AVD Screen orientation not changing with CTRL+F11 or CTRL+F12

  I run my app in the AVD emulator using eclipse but I'm unable to change the screen orientation in the AVD (Android 2.0 platform on the emulator). When I press CONTROL+F11 or CONTROL+F12 on the keyboard, nothing happens. No messages are generated in the adb debuglog/logcat either when I press either hotkey. According to http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html these are the correct hotkeys to switch the emulator's screen orientation. I tried it with my app, and with the messaging app. The hotkey has no affect in any case. I'm running Fedora 12, Gnome. I checked my Keyboard Shortcuts in the System - Preferences menu, nothing's attached to either hotkey. Same problem, 3 different PCs (all running Fedora Gnome).

• git mv and only change case of directory

  While I found similar question I didn't find an answer to my problem When I try to rename the directory from FOO to foo via git mv FOO foo I get fatal: renaming 'FOO' failed: Invalid argument OK. So I try git mv FOO foo2 && git mv foo2 foo But when I try to commit via git commit . I get # On branch master # Untracked files: # (use "git add <file>..." to include in what will be committed) # # foo nothing added to commit but untracked files present (use "git add" to track) When I add the directory via git add foo nothing changes and git commit . gives me the same message again. What am I doing wrong? I thought I'm using a case-sensitive system (OSX) why can't I simply rename the directory?

I searched everywhere, nothing on slashdot, nothing on google. Ardamax Keyviewer? Should I just write to Ardamax? I am at a loss of what to do. I feel comprimised. Anyone managed to decrpyt files with Crypto-analysis?

  In my current position as Software Engineering Manager I have been through a lot of ups and downs with staffing, ranging from laying-off everyone who was on my team as we went through the great economic downturn in 2007-2008, to numerous rounds of interviewing and hiring contractors, full-time employees, and converting some contractors to employee status.  I have not yet blogged much about my experiences, but I plan to do that more in the next few months.  But before I do that, let me point you to a great article that somebody else wrote on The Unspoken Truth About Managing Geeks that really hits the target.  If you are a non-technical person who manages technical employees, you definitely have to read that article.  And if you are a technical person who has been promoted into management, this article can really help you do your job and communicate up the line of command about your team.  When you move into management with all the new and different demands put on you, it is easy to forget how things work in the tech subculture, and to lose touch with your team.  This article will help you remember what’s going on behind the scenes and perhaps explain why people who used to get along great no longer are, or why things seem to have changed since your promotion. I have to give credit to Andy Leonard (blog | twitter) for helping me find that article.  I have been reading his series of ramble-rants on managing tech teams, and the above article is linked in the first rant in the series, entitled Goodwill, Negative and Positive.  I have read a handful of his entries in this series and so far I pretty much agree with everything he has said, so of course I would encourage you to read through that series, too.

• iphone problem adding splashscreen

  hi all, i've a little problem, i've add a default.png in my app and it work. I've modify my file, delete file and reference and upload my new file. On my iphone the image does not appear, only some second of blackscreen and after my app start. In the simulator the splashscreen appear. I've try to delete my app on iphone, make a clean all and rebuild & install but nothing... I've try to make clean all, close xcode, delete default.png to my project directory (sometimes exist, sometimes no), open xcode, add my file and build & install on my iphone but nothing... Any ideas?

• Django Distinct on queryset in forms.py

  Hi all, I try to get a list with distinct into the forms.py like this: forms.ModelMultipleChoiceField(queryset=Events.objects.values('hostname'), required=False).distinct() In the python shell this command works perfect, but when trying it in forms.py leaves me a blank form, so nothing appears. When i just do Events.objects.all() the form appears, but distinct doesn't work with Events.objects.all()... i also tried values_list etc but doesn't seem to fit into the forms neither... anyone got an idea how to get a SELECT DISTINCT into a ModelMultipleChoiceField? I read some other questions about this at stackoverflow but nothing seems to work out with me, so hopefully someone knows how to do this in forms.py. Thxs in advance

  Hi, I am trying to get somehow all the revision log that were made to a particular file, but I seem to stupid to do that :( To checkout a module I do the following CVSROOT="/home/projects/stuff/" cvs co myworkingdir within myworkingdir I have a testfile called paper.tex and from this I wanna try to get the revisions but I tried the following but nothing works ... CVSROOT="/home/projects/stuff/" cvs log paper.tex cvs log: cannot open CVS/Entries for reading: No such file or directory cvs log: nothing known about paper.tex -bash-3.2$ CVSROOT="/home/projects/stuff/" cvs log myworkingdir/paper.tex cvs [log aborted]: no such directory `myworkingdir' Anyone an idea how I could get the log of the revisions of the paper.tex file in the myworkingdir module? • What to do when the programming activity becomes a problem?

  I once saw a program (can't remember which) where it talked about people "experiencing flow" when they are doing something they are passionate about. When "in flow", they tend to lose track of time and surrounding, concentrating only on their activity at hand. This happens a lot for me when I program; most particularly when I face a problem. I refuse to give up until it's solved. This usually leads to hours just rushing by and I forget to eat lunch, dinner gets pushed into far into the evening, and when I finally look at the clock, it's way into the wee-hours of the night and I will only get a few hours of sleep before having to rise early in the morning. (This is not to say that I'm in flow only when facing a problem - but I find it particularly hard to stop programming and step back when there's something I can't solve immediately.) I love programming, but I hate it when it disrupts my normal routines (most importantly eating and sleeping patterns). And sitting still for so many hours, staring a screen, is not healthy. Please, any ideas on how I can get my rampant programming activity under control?

  doesn't .getKeyCode( ) return the key's int value? Because i have set my jtextfield to listen to keylistener, and in the keytyped method, i check what key has been pressed. • Reproducible freezes with on an AMD fusion (e350) sony vaio

  So a week ago I bought it and I've been struggling to make the Ubuntu which I installed stable. There's one thing that makes my life miserable, though. There's this easily reproducible freeze when I start some kind of video. So here is what happens: Everything works fine for some time I start vlc/mplayer/flashplayer/totem with something to watch In few minutes time I lose the sound (nothing in the logs at this point) At that time the video app instantly allocates all the memory and its CPU usage skyrockets. Total freeze. I can move the cursor around for few seconds and sometimes even switch to another app. But ultimately there comes the time I can't do anything - can't kill X with ctrl+alt+backspace (I have it enabled), can't switch to any other console (ctrl+alt+f1-6), can't connect to the machine via ssh. The only way to restart it is the ctrl+alt+SysRq+UABI magic :) What discourages me most is the fact I can't see anything in the logs. The only error I've noticed is Jun 19 17:00:37 serenity kernel: [ 1506.350676] software-center[17581]: segfault at 30 ip 00007fd3631b814c sp 00007fff18a6fa10 error 4 in libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.4[7fd362f7d000+436000]. I've been searching through the Xorg log, kernel logs, syslog. If you have any idea how I can get more debug info I'll be glad to try them. Things I've tried: Changing drivers - the open source one, the proprietary driver xorg-edgers' ppa - https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa changing to the last stable kernel (2.6.39) Some notes: It my be irrelevant but the sound is constantly stuttering. This probably is a separate issue though I've found that if I start more video/sound apps the freeze happens faster.

  I'm currently working on a irc bot for a multi-lingual channel, and I'm encountering some issues with unicode which are proving nearly impossible to solve. No matter what configuration of unicode encoding I seem to try, the list function which the below code sits within just flat out does nothing (c.notice is a class function which sends a NOTICE command to the irc server) or when it does do something, spits out something which obviously isn't encoded. The command should be sending ??, but instead it seems hellbent on sending å¤©å­ with a previous configuration of the same commands. The one I have specified below is of the 'send nothing' variety. I haven't worked with unicode before this, and thus I am quite stuck. I'm also positive that I'm doing this completely wrong as a consequence.
