• iDeneb OS X Issues

  This afternoon I installed OS X Leopard on my computer through iDeneb. It mostly worked, but I have a few issues. Firstly, it doesn't seem like it's detecting my graphics card properly. I have a Nvidia 8800GT 512mb installed. As you can see in the screenshot below, it's not detecting it and limiting me to a resolution of 1024x768 (which is a pain in the arse to use) Secondly, I don't have any sound. It's not a massive issue like the graphics issue above, but I'd still like to get it rectified. Thirdly, (this is a very small one) my numlock light doesn't seem to be functioning. I don't really care as the numpad still works, but it would be nice to have the numlock light working. Can anyone lend a hand with any of those problems? Thanks. (bump for great justice)

• ATI video cards - unable to use entire monitor (1080p)

  Hi all, I have a Dell s2409w, 24" 1080p monitor. With nVidia, I would plug-in the monitor and voila, it automatically knew it was 1080p (1920x1080). I have both a Windows laptop and Ubuntu laptop. Neither is capable of using the fullscreen even though the monitor reports the input is 1080p. I am connecting the monitors via HDMI, is there a 'special' setting I am missing to make this work? Otherwise, I like the performance of my ATI video cards, the drivers seem to be stable and reliable. Thanks, Walter

• Vista x64: Improving troubleshoot approach skills

  I'm not a Windows SuperUser, but neither just the regular user. I don't mind browsing the Registry, using Process Explorer, reading the Event logs, (un)installing new drivers and so on, but all this only makes me solve some problems. I tend though to run into problems where these tools aren't enough. Which tools should I learn about to improve my troubleshooting skills in Windows? Currently I'm using Windows Vista x64 (not moved to 7 yet), facing audio/video stuttering problems and I think this is a good place to improve my troubleshooting skills. I know this post is similar to this question, but my machine is only hanging occationally. • Is there a work around to configure brightness or color on a DisplayLink monitor?

  I run 3 monitors in addition to my laptop display at work - two of the monitors are using DisplayLink adapters. I've always thought that all my displays were too bright (and possibly give me headaches?) - even after I reduced their brightness as far as possible using the monitor menus and the nvidia software control panel. Recently I installed f.lux - I love it's "halogen" color profile which has improved my life considerably. The problem is that f.lux has no effect on/will not adjust the color & brightness of my two DisplayLink monitors. F.lux has a faq (#4 under troubleshooting) that addresses this - saying DisplayLink has no support for color calibration so f.lux only works with monitors "directly connected to your computer". Does anyone know of a work around? Specifically a way to use windows color management/profiles (or some other software) to adjust the brightness/color tone of DisplayLink monitors? • Forcing Remote machine to serve RDP (or similar) session

  Due to a Dell/Nvidia design flaw in the Dell Inspiron 1420 series, my laptop no longer shows a display. I am looking for a solution to view it remotely. I have used it via RDP in the past (not for a year though) however for what ever reason I can no longer RDP, it could have been disabled some how. However, I'm on the same LAN, I can ping it, and know its login creditials. Is there a way I can hack into it remotely to force it to serve a RDP session or an alternative? Please bear in mind my only view I could have to its interface is via a remote session. Its running Windows 7 Pro

• Building a new cluster for mathematical calculations (Win/Lin)

  I would like to build a new cluster to perform heavy mathematical calculations in Matlab and Abaqus. One of my friend told me that distributed computing is way faster than parallel computing, which is very true after reading a bit on the internet. However, I have never clustered before. Current workstation I own: Dell Precision T5400 2 x Intel Xeon 2.5 GHz 16 GB RAM (2GB x 8) 1 x Western Digital 1TB HDD 7200 rpm 1 x nVidia Quadro FX4600 768MB GPU 1 x 870W PSU OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit 2nd WS: I can buy another WS similar configuration to the one I own I am not bothered about OS, I am willing to cluster with either Windows or Linux. • Ghosting context menu clicks in WinXP

  Let me preface by saying I have a lot of windows open most of the time, although not resource intensive ones, just browsers, ssh sessions, a music player, FTP client, Notepad++, IM clkients, etc. Anyway, I get a lot of weird visual "ghosting" type effects. For example when right-clicking and then selecting an option from a context menu the selected item will remain in view until I right click somewhere on the desktop. Same thing happens when selecting items from the File, Edit, etc. menu in various programs. I'm assuming this is just a result of a less than high quality video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200), all the other hardware in the machine is newer higher quality, that specific video card was added after the fact for multiple monitors. I have looked all over the web for solutions and have increased the number of GDI handles for Windows, reduced the hardware accelaration on the card, etc. Any suggestions other than replace the card?

  I have BSOD with 0x000000f4 code. It appears when system is not loaded at all. No new hardware where intalled. Only nvidia drivers where updated 3 days ago and they are up to date for now(version 296.10). • Color Management, Linux, Photoshop C2 via Wine

  I am new to Color Management CMS, so doing it on Linux, and then throw Wine into the mix ... and I am a little lost. However, I have Photoshop CS2 running okay with Crossover Professional on Ubuntu 9.10. I have a Canon 450D (Rebel XSI) and I imagine I will be able to find a profile for my printer. I ordered a Huey Calibrator (yet to come). I guess I will run into problems with Nvidia Twinview, but one calibrated monitor is good enough for now. Am I going to be able to get color management from Camera -- Monitor -- Print? Most specifically, when I get the Monitor profile loaded with something like xcalib, will Photoshop CS2 run through wine (crossover Pro) understand that? Will I need to select specific things / profiles in photoshop under the edit::Color Settings menu? I found several pages on http://jcornuz.wordpress.com/ helpful, but am wondering about the Wine issue, and anything else anyone can do to help.

• Unable to create system partition or locate existing system partition during Windows-7 installation

  I have Windows XP 32-bit installed on an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with 2x 500gb drives in RAID1 using the NV RAID controller. On this there are 3 partitions (XP, XP backup and DATA) There are also 4x 500gb drives in RAID10 using the Silicon Image 3114R RAID controller. I just purchased a Windows 7 64-bit as an ISO download upgrade version which I promptly burned to DVD and attempted to perform an upgrade installation. Here is the error message I am getting: Firstly, where are these "Setup log files" located? Second, does this mean I need to find compatible (64-bit?) drivers for the Mainboard and put them on floppy? EDIT: As suggested on another forum, I tried downloading the nVidia Mainboard RAID drivers for Windows 2003 64-bit. I loaded the drivers successfully using the Load Driver button, but pressing NEXT still returns this error.

• Latitude E6410 - Screen flickering on Windows 8

  On Windows 8, my Latitude E6410 screen (1440x900 - 60Hz - NVidia NVS3100M) is flickering. If I turn off the laptop for 30 minutes and turn it back on, there's no flickering but it eventually start again after 10-15 minutes. The flickering seems more present at the top and bottom of the screen. I already updated the graphic card drivers, bios, etc. Nothing seems to fix the issue. To prove that it isn't a hardware issue, when I reinstalled Windows 7 I couldn't reproduce the issue. Any idea what could cause this?

• Windows XP Disc: corrupt or not corrupt?

  Hi all, I just finished one of my builds and am trying to install Windows XP onto it. Here are the specs beforehand... Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4 GHz (512KB L2, 533MHz FSB) QDI Superb 4 Motherboard 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Seagate 80GB IDE HDD Bestec 250W PSU 16MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro Samsung DVD-ROM USB 2.0 PCI Card Generic PCI Modem The issue right now is that when I'm running through the Windows Setup from my XP Pro SP3 disc, partway through the setup says that a random file on the disc is corrupt and the computer needs to be restarted. Every time I tried booting it up, a different file was noted as corrupt. However, I tested the same disc on another computer and the Windows XP disc ran to the end of the setup screen without error. I tried this on another computer and the same thing. What could possibly be happening on this one build to cause it errors during the Windows Setup? Thanks in advance.

  Possible Duplicate: I Want To Start Editing Videos But My Computer Moves Slowly I am using Windows 7 Home Premium on a PC with AMD 64bit Athlon Processor 2850e @ 1.80GHz, 2GB RAM, and a NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 graphics card I am using Pinnacle Studio 15 HD Ultimate. While editing videos the program moves normally but the playback is slow. When I press play the sound is normal but the picture is really slow and choppy. When the sound ends the picture continues to play and it speeds up. I updated the video card today, restarting the PC but get the same behaviour. Does anyone have any suggestions what I can do to get video working smoothly while editing?

• Computer Randomly Restarts (no crash dump)

  Hey everyone this is my first time here, so, my computer got pulled out of his place the other day by accident and it never got back to working decently ever again. I just stopped using it because everytime i power it on, it restarts. Some times it doesn't even reach the desktop, others it even allows me to run a game or something. It gets really random. Today i was trying my last attempt before sending it to fix and it ran fine for 40 minutes but as i tried to run a game the screen got really messeud up full of colorful lines and stuff and i'm assuming it had to do with the graphics card. Altho, my question is, what can be causing all this restart thingie? Can it be just the Power Supply failing me and hence, not giving enough power to make the graphic card go for instance? • Ubuntu 9.10 X Stuck in restart loop - I think...

  Trying out Ubuntu, installation went fine - upgraded to the proprietary nVidia drivers but on restart I get a login prompt and the screen is flashing really fast almost as if Xserver is trying to start and failing, I can type when the screen isn't in a "flash" as it were and it's so fast and random it's hard to even type a login name without it missing some characters - this makes typing a password (i.e. not being able to see which characters made it or not) very hard. I can log back into the live cd and alter my settings - but I can't even find out how to stop X stop starting on boot; Looks like they've moved everything around :-p I'd like to: Stop X from crashing and going insane (if it is actually Xserver) Know how to stop X from starting on bootup, Looks like interactive boot is also off by default now Update: A temporary work around seems to be enabling ssh and just connecting to the box over the network - ssh seems to work fine :-p Cheers, Chris

• Linux with Windows XP vmware guest unable to access certain Internet hosts

  hi I have annoying problem. My setup is the following: debian Linux, 64 bits, VMWare workstation 7 host, with Windows XP running as guest. From Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I am unable to access few sites, for example nvidia.com, osdir. Basically get connection timed out, on the other hand ping works to those sites. Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version. everything works fine on Linux host I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc. I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help Any idea what is going on?

• Why did my laptop turn off?

  Normally I can slip my running laptop into a backpack, go somewhere, and if it's no more than about half an hour later, it'll still be running. At the destination I plug in the AC power unit and all is well. I run it off of the AC unit before and after the trip, have the screen at less than full backlight brightness, and don't have any peripherals that burn power. Sometimes the wireless switch accidentally slides in the backpack, and that causes extra power to be used and the laptop dies before I reach the destination. Sad, but so be it. But sometimes the wireless switch is off, I've reached the destination in less than 30 minutes (typically 10-20 min), and I know the battery was fully charged, yet the machine is off. Is there a way to determine, after the fact, why the machine shut itself off? I'm running Linux on a fairly powerful Gateway with 4GB RAM, fancy nvidia graphics, dual core cpu, chosen more for number crunching power than battery life, but should last easily for half an hour if not an hour.

• Can one build a single disk RAID 1 array?

  I have an Nvidia hardware RAID 1 array and need to reformat. But I don't have any spare storage media, so I need to get along with the 2 disks in the array. I figured I'd do as follows: Delete the array, so I have 2 separate but identical disks, A and B, with my files Put disk B aside Reformat disk A, build RAID 1 array with it, install Windows XP Put disk B back in Boot to Windows on disk A, copy my files from disk B to disk A Add disk B to the RAID 1 array, rebuild array And now I'd have a new RAID 1 array, fresh install and all my files intact (the ones I copied). Here are the parts I'm unsure about: Can I build a RAID 1 array using just one disk, then add the other one later? Can Windows on disk A see disk B and allow me to copy my files over?

• sound clipping in windows 7 64bit

  something is up with 64 bit version of windows 7. i have 2 (good pro-sumer) sound cards which i've used in other version of windows 7 w/out problems, but now it is causing severe clipping (noise, sound having little gaps surrounded by static).. the cards i am using is echo mia, and native instruments audio kontrol 1. the audio kontrol 1 is a external card, and would work ok for a few hours after rebooting, and than it would go back into clipping mode, to the point where you tube videos would not play from trying to process sound and it stopping for extended periods of time. echo mia is performing better, but there is still some clipping and distortion. the machine i use is newly built, with i7 920 64 bit cpu, 6 gigs of ram and an outdated nvidia video card (geforece 7950 gx2)

• Only some motherboards can support faster RAM?

  This is a question relating to one of my builds. Here are the specs: ECS P4VXASD2+ V5.0 motherboard Intel P4 Northwood 2.8 GHz (533 MHz FSB, 512 KB L2) 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Maxtor 300GB IDE HDD 16 MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro AGP OKIA 300W ATX PSU Gigabyte 52x CD-ROM The issue right now is that I'm trying to install Windows XP from the CD drive but the computer randomly restarts partway through installation. My other build was BSODing due to RAM latency errors. This ECS board manual states that memory modules "up to 333 MHz" (i.e. PC2700) is supported. However, I am running PC3200 modules, which is clearly faster than PC2700. Would this be causing the computer from randomly restarting? EDIT 1: I also wanted to mention that my Emachines T2482 is actually running 2x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM when it should only be supporting PC1600 and PC2100 DDR RAM. Yet there are no issues with it.

But just found out that recently that I already have 2x2GB installed and should be 4GB in total. When I looked at the properties of my computer, It said "Installed Memory 2GB". I wonder why is that happening? Is the other ram broken?.. I never the computer casing since I bought. so I didn't realize that I already have 2 x 2gb ram. what can you advice. Thanks!

• Laptop monitor goes black under intense graphics

  I have a dell inspiron 1520 with a nvidia GeForce 8600M GT video card. I have Windows 7 professional as an operating system. Yesterday when I was using it the screen started to somewhat flicker then go completely black. I restarted it and in the boot screen everything seems fine, when I entered the login screen it became flickery again, and when I logged in, when a couple of windows popped up it went black again. I hooked it up to a tft monitor and the monitor works fine, and did some more tests that confirmed that under higher graphics causes the laptop monitor to go black. Is there a reason why this is happening?

  I've recently bought a refurbished Toshiba Satellite A660 11M and I get the blue screen of death appearing fairly frequently now, and I can't seem to work out why or how to prevent/cure it. Firstly I thought it was due to Zone Alarm from what I read on the net, but then I thought it was a memory issue after it crashed whilst I was running Memtest. But after I ran Memtest a second time, it completed without any errors... • Can I upgrade my computer to run SC2 smoothly?

  My desktop is: ACPI x86 AMD Athlon x2 Dual Core 3600 1.9ghz 1 gig ram NVIDIA Geforce 7300 I'm running 32 bit windows vista. My budget is ~$250 When I play SC2, its incredibly slow and I have to play with the graphics on the LOWEST settings. What can/should I buy (specifically) to get this to run SC2 smoothly? Are max setting possible? I'm not sure what I can get that will be for sure compatible + will actually do the trick. Or is my computer simply too old?

• 64 Bit Windows drivers for Inspiron 1720

  Dell doesn't seem to offer 64 bit drivers specifically for the Inspiron 1720 (laptop). I'm going to be upgrading from Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64bit and I want to pull down the necessary stuff before hand. Are there any Dell systems that are similar enough to the Inspiron 1720 that I can use for a baseline to make sure I still have Ethernet and WiFi after the reinstall? It doesn't matter if they are for Vista 64 or Windows 7. Identified hardware: Processor: Intel mobile Core 2 Duo T7500 Chipset: Intel Mobile 965 Express Wifi: Intel Pro Wireless Drive Controller: Intel Matrix Graphics: nVidia GeForce 8600M GT Bluetooth: Dell TrueMobile 355 + EDR Ricoh card reader I think anything else, the default Windows drivers will be sufficient.
