• Recently reloaded computer, now have trailing effect when windows overlap

  I recently did a clean install of my home machine and I am having a weird graphical error where if I move one window across the top of another it leaves a trail: I have the most recent NVIDIA drivers installed and nothing new is installed on my machine than before the reload (and I never had this issue before). I have two monitors and it happens on both so I'm sure it isn't a hardware issue (the card and my main monitor are also both less than 6 months old) I've also noticed a ripple when scrolling down on web pages which I believe is related. Any ideas what might be causing this and solutions to fix it?

• Can there be multiple monitors with these video cards and setup

  I have a Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808 laptop running windows 7 Ultimate with one VGA port and one HDMI port. It has one Intel HD Graphics family card and one NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M. Right now I have one monitor running via the VGA port, and also the basic laptop monitor. When I look at the monitor setup, I see one unused video card available. Can I have another monitor via the HDMI port? If I cannot run three monitors, is there some way I could make a large "single" desktop that extends over two monitors? For the sake of celerity, maybe something like having a virtual machine window that extends over two monitors. Could this maybe come from third party software?

  My computer crashes like it freezes sometimes but sometimes it jumps to a black screen which I can do nothing about other than restart. I tested if it has anything to do with the programs I normally run or with the ones I installed, but it's a long time I have the problem and I think it also happened in the beginning that I bought this computer. To make sure, I normally run skype and Spiral Knights and some animation softwares like Flash.   I have P4 processor with nvidia card. Now if i don't connect to internet then my computer stays on for as much i can like 4-5 days. But if i plug in the ethernet wire. Do some surfing and leave computer as it is. Then computer fails. I mean The display on screen gets off Looks like something stopping the power supply to Harddisk. But motherboard stays on , FAN is still running , i can eject CD drive as well. But no display on monitor. I have to turn off and then turn on again. • Windows 8 FN key doesn't work for brightness

  I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 and fn+f5/fn+f6 keys (for brightness) doesn't work. In fact, they work, but they can increase/decrease the brightness only 1 time. I mean - after pressing fn+f5 once, nothing happens if I try to press fn+f5 again, before I press fn+f6. This only happens after logging in. At the login screen and during Windows boot I can adjust the brightness as I want, but after login I can't. I installed the latest ATK driver and NVIDIA graphics driver for Windows 8, and I think that my problem is related to conflict with drivers. I tried to reinstall/delete some drivers, but it didn't help. How can I detect where is the problem? Thanks.

• how to debug BSOD irql_not_less_or_equal error

  So I'm getting the irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD. I tried looking at the event viewer for potential causes, and cannot find any. I also checked the CPU temperature in BIOS right after the error and that was fine. I've tried 2 sets of RAM chips already, both give the issues. The error doesn't happen consistently...it happens daily, but many hours can pass and it won't happen, or only 10 minutes can pass and it might happen again. By the way, just bought the parts and built the computer myself a couple of weeks ago. How to debug the cause for this? • How to tell if my sound card is listed in Device Manager?

  The sound on my computer suddenly stopped working. When I check Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel, I get "No Audio Device" with everything grayed out. When I check the Device Manager under "Sound, video and game controllers" I see the following list: Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drivers Legacy Video Capture Devices Media Control Devices MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device Standard Game Port Video Codecs None of these looks like my sound card. Of course, my sound "card" is not really a sound card, it's integrated with the nVidia-nForce motherboard. I'm running Windows XP. So is one of the above my sound device, or is the OS not detecting it? If the latter, how do I get it to detect it?

  This days, it seems that I either go worse with my eyes or some settings with contrast and brightness have been changed. However, I have been searching now for some tutorial on how to adjust contrast and brightness, and I have found already some, on how to use Microsoft Win7 Calibrate Display Color program, but some people don't recommend it.. My monitor control menu shows settings (which are by default) that contrast is set to 80, contrast to 90 and sharpnes to 45, for which I belive are pretty dam high. I'm usually every day in front of my PC about 6-10h. The biggest problem is, when the night comes, and I have to read some word document, after a 10-15m of reading, eyes starts hurting. I'm using ASUS VW198 and Nvidia 9800 GT graphic card. So please suggest me, what should I decrease, contrast or brightness or both?

We're shooting for an AutoCAD/SolidWorks/YouTube 1080p capable environment. I can't see how such a small and low profile card could possibly have the horsepower to handle such GPU computations for a big environment like that. We're going to have up to 64 VDIs per server, and are a 500-1000 employee count sized company. Someone enlighten me please! Determining which route to go (between RemoteFX and VMware View/PCoIP) and the hardware (NVIDIA 4GB non-Quadro/Tesla GPUs vs Teradici card). Servers have three 4x, three 8x, and one 16x PCI-E lane. Two of the 8x lanes will be occupied by SAS RAID cards.

• Problem with Win7 connecting to Internet

  Hello, I have had Windows 7 for about a year now and for the first four months it worked perfectly. But for the last 8 months it has been horrible. It will connect to the Internet for about 5 minutes and then just lose connection. It will reconnect in about 5 minues but then it just keeps disconnecting. I ran a virus scan about 2 weeks ago and I found a Trojan on my PC which I removed and dealt with. It was fine after that but now for these last couple days it has been just as bad as before. I think a virus is causing this but I will read any suggestions and tips to help me solve this problem. Thank you. • Windows 7: blue faces in VLC... sometimes

  There are a bunch of forum posts about this issue from the last several years but no resolution that I could find. I have the newest VLC installed on Windows 7 with the newest nvidia drivers. Suddenly, VLC plays some videos in such a way as faces are blue. When viewed in another media player, or when looking at the thumbnails, this is not an issue. Other videos are not affected. I've tried resetting VLC options, deleting the VLC folder in the AppData area, etc. I have no other color issues. Does anyone have a fix?

• Full computer freeze with audio stuttering after playing games for a period of time

  I've been having a problem with my computer freezing completely when playing games like LA Noire or SW:TOR (yay early access!). Basically, what happens is I will play for around an hour or so (depending on the game) and when the freeze happens, the entire computer locks up and any audio that was being played glitches out and stutters broken-record style (only much shorter. Very techno). I think it might be heat related and thought it might be my video card overheating, so I have been setting my video card (Nvidia Geforce 260GTX 216-core) fan to highest setting, but that has little to no effect. Now I'm beginning to think it's either my FSB or CPU overheating. Can anyone provide some insight or similar experiences? I'm really at a loss and don't wanna damage my rig beyond repair.

  I have a desktop with an nVidia GT 9500 which has two DVI slots. I have a 24" TN-Panel TFT on that and it looks pretty good. Then I hooked it onto the DisplayPort of my ThinkPad with the Intel HD 3000 card with an DP-DVI adapter and I think that the fonts look even clearer. Both computers run Kubuntu 12.04, although the ThinkPad is freshly set up, while the desktop is migrated from the previous release. Is this a hardware thing or is it just some setting in the anti-aliasing or sub-pixel-hinting?

  What is needed to make a GPU fully fed by CPU? Comparing their flops/s is enough? For example, if i could manage to make a very old(pentium-3) CPU with one of Nvidia-Fermi GPU, it would not be able to fed the gpu with data per sec. What is the criteria to fit CPU to GPU exactly when OpenCL or some similar work needed? Of course RAM and BUS will be chosen in a similar way but how exactly? Assume each GPU-core will calculate a sqrt and a division and an adding for 100 times for every itearation. Thanks.

• converting 0+1 raid array to 0

  I'm currently running raid 0+1; four 500 GB drives in the array.. I'm looking at migrating the array from 0+1 (Stripe+Mirror) to 0 only (stripe).. The goal is to remove the hard drives from the array in order to put them in the newly purchased Drobo, then copy the data from the remaining striped raid to the said Drobo.. Is it sufficient to just remove the drives themselves and change the raid configuration within the nvidia raid config?? Or is there something more that needs to be done?? Does the order matter (i.e. removing drives first or changing the raid configuration??) Is it possible to migrate the array this way without having any loss of data? I'm wary about burning all that data to DVDs (few hundred GB worth) to back it up.. Any other advice from people that may have done this (or have other insight) would be helpful as well..

• Fedora 16 Running Hot

  Since switching from Windows 7 to Fedora 16, my laptop has been running incredibly hot (by the air exhaust). The laptop is an Asus K73S. Running 'sensors', I receive: acpitz-virtual-0: 75.0 celsius nouveau-pci-0100: 66.0 celsius asus-isa-0000: 75.0 celsius The only CPU hog is Firefox at 30 - 40% on average. My GPU information (from lspci) is: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Core Process or Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09). Running lspci | grep -i VGA, returns: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF106 [GeForce GT 555M SDDR3] (rev a1) I don't notice a huge difference running without the battery, but it does seem a little cooler. • games and movies become too slow after some time

  On my gaming desktop, I was fixing my desktop's power supply when something seemed to burn (I got that stinging burning smell). However when I turned ON the computer (it was OFF before), everything seemed to be fine. However, I have noticed that now it becomes too slow if I play a game or movie on it. I am talking about the computer becoming painfully slow after about 5 minutes into the movie/game (it works fine otherwise e.g. browsing), it becomes so slow I can see individual frames from movies/games. What could be the problem? A fried video card? friend memory (RAM), something else? • Fedora 17 Hangup on Boot (plymouth-quit-wait)

  I am having an issue after several updates where when I try to boot the boot animation "loads" then flashes with the fedora logo, and then sits there. After checking into it more I found that two services were failing to start. The first is tcsd.service and the second is plymouth-quit-wait.service. I was able to to disable tcsd.service (in the hopes I could boot without it), however I have been unable to do anything to the second service. I am running FC17 and the akmod nvidia drivers, on an ASUSG53SW. Everything is up to date as far as I know. What is the exact problem that I am facing and how can I go about troubleshooting this or fixing it?

• How to make my display Grayscale?

  I want to reduce the saturation of my laptop monitor to the point that it is almost grayscale. That's the goal. Intel and Asus don't have an answer. Asus Splendid and the intel graphics control panel can increase the saturation, but not lower it. I would prefer a software solution, although I DIY'ed a vga grayscale adapter for my desktop. I have an Asus UL30A with an Intel GMA 4500MHD. I know that the latest ATI cards, windotosh's and high end nvidia cards all support control panel desaturation. Why? black and white makes me 3 times more productive.

  I want to get a Windows 8 "ultrabook" that I can also use for gaming. Most seem to have Intel HD Graphics 4000 (integrated) or NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M (dedicated). From experience, are they any good? Things I enjoy playing are Call of Duty, Fifa and Skyrim for example. I'm looking for a device that will work on the next generation of those games as well, so it shouldn't just barely work on the current versions that exist now. So, would those two cards suffice? • What sort of things can cause a whole system to appear to hang for 100s-1000s of milliseconds?

  I am working on a Windows game and while rendering, some computers will experience intermittent pauses ("hitches" for lack of a better term). When profiled they appear in seemingly random places in the code. Eventually I noticed that it wasn't just my process that was affected, but (seemingly) every process on the system. All of the threads in my application hitch at once. The CPU utilization drops during these hitches and it appears as if most processes make no progress. This leads me to believe this may be an Operating System or Driver issue, but it only occurs while playing the game (and only on some systems). What sort of operations might the operating system be doing that would require the kernel to pause all user threads and block. Some kind of I/O? At first I thought of paging but my impression is that would only affect a single process, no? Some systems in use: Windows, DirectX (3d), nVidia cards (unknown if replicates on ATI), using overlapped io for streaming

• Route gaming data over wireless and everything else through LAN?

  I have two internet connections available to me. One is via LAN.. not a great ping, but fast downloads. The other is via USB wireless adapter.. good ping, but slow downloads. I want to connect to both of them simultaneously. I want to be able to specify which data or application will use the wireless connection and route everything else through the lan connection. Is this possible, and how would I do it? Windows 7 x64 is my operating system. Also, if I'm able to achieve that, will it override the ForceBindIP?

It was a seamless, integrated experience, ideal for those one-off application compatibility issues. I was thinking to install VirtualBox in Windows 8 and then run Ubuntu as guess OS. Since Hyper-V is a Type-0 hipervisor, may I know does this bring the same benefit if I have Ubuntu Linux install as a virtual guess OS? Meaning, if I turning the Ubuntu on (the guess OS), does the Ubuntu still able to access the hardware information like nVidia display card or processor information? I'm just curious to know can this be done?
