  • Is Tripp Lite a trusted brand for a UPS?

    I am looking to buy a rack mounted UPS that can take in 208V power and serve up 120V power. A basic APC unit that can do this is $4k. I have found a Tripp Lite model that will work for $2.5k. Is the extra $1.5k for the APC just for the brand? Or will the Tripp Lite serve me just as well? Thanks!

  • Poor performance of single processor 32bit Windows XP xompared SMP in VBA+Excel

    Welcome! On many computers I experienced poor performance of 32 bit guests running on 64 bit Linux host (I used only the Debian family). At last I managed to collect benchmark data. I made the benchmark by running custom VBA macro, (which we use in our company) that generates 284 pages long Word document full of Excel Pie charts, tables and comments. The macro is run as a single task (excluding the standard services) on a set of identically configured Windows XP 32-bit systems. I measured the time (in sec.) needed to perform the test. The computer (i.e. my notebook Asus P53E) supports both VT-d extensions and native Windows XP. It has 2-core processor, each core is hyperthreaded, so in total we have 4 mostly independent execution units. I use the latest VirtualBox 4.2 and VMWare Workstation 9.0 for Linux, installed together on the same host (running Mint 13 Maya) but never run simultaneously. Although VBA is inherently single-threaded, the Excel calculations, which take much more than a half of total computation time, supposedly aren't. So one would expect some speed gain when running on 2+ cores ("+" for hyperthreading). What we see is a speed loss. And quite big one too. For the VirtualBox the VT-d extension isn't a big deal. Can anyone shed some light on why the singlethreaded Windows kernel is so much faster than the SMP one?

    I was using my EEE PC 1000H running Windows XP and out of the blue, the keyboard stopped working - pressing keys does absolutely nothing. It does not appear to be a hardware issue, as I am able to enter BIOS configuration with no issues. I've tried: 'Safe mode' 'Last known good configuration' Reinstalling the generic keyboard driver Removing all power sources and holding down the power button, as suggested by popular forums. What could the problem be, and what could I try?

    My Sony Vaio laptop has a built-in program called "Sony Battery Care" which provides a functionality to hold battery at certain levels of charge while operating. For example, I've set it to 50% and the battery is always kept at that level while on AC power. This mode prevents battery degradation and is more effective as I usually use my laptop with AC power. I'm looking for a similar program to use with other laptops with Windows OS; preferably a free one.

  • Problems with Startup after Script runs to Shutdown Windows 7 PC

    I have a simple .bat script to shutdown a kiosk style machine in our work shutdown -h -f this hibernates the machine and I have it running each evening as a scheduled job. However my problem comes when I turn the machine on again. The first time I press power it starts up and then immediately hibernates again, like it runs the script a second time. the second time I press power it stays up. Any suggestions on how I can avoid this?

One option is the smallest of the Amazon cloud machines. The question becomes can I make one of these machines a domain controller? Cost wise the Amazon machine is cheaper than the power costs of keeping a server (or a PC) up and running in his home office 24x7 thanks to the high cost of power in Southern California.

  • After my laptop wakes up from sleeping/hibernating, the LCD/brightness is very low. How can I set it to default?

    In Power Management Preferences, On AC Power tab, I have brightness to 100%. "Dim display when idle" is not checked. I know for sure my LCD brightness is capable of going higher, because if I hit Fn and F7 then it resets the monitor brightness and settings for a few seconds, but the resolution breaks and then the brightness goes back. PS: OS is Debian Lenny ( I set the tags but for clarification ) and laptop is a Thinkpad.

    Hi guys, I'm looking to set up a multipurpose home server and hoped you could help me with the hardware selection. First of all, the services it will provide: Hosting a MySQL database (for training and testing purposes) FTP server Personal Mail Server Home media server So with this in mind I've done some research, and found some viable solutions: A standard PC with the appropriate software (Either second hand or new) A non-solid state mini-ITX system A solid state, fanless mini-ITX system I've also noted the pros and cons of each system: A standard second hand PC with old hardware would be the cheapest option. It could also have lacking processing power, not enough RAM and generally faulty hardware. Also, huge power consumption heat generation and noise levels. A standard new PC would have top-notch hardware and will stay that way for quite some time, so it's a good investment. But again, the main problem is power consumption, heat generation and noise levels. A non-solid state mini-ITX system would have the advantages of lower power consumption, lower cost (as far as I can see) and long lasting hardware. But it will generate noise and heat which will be even worse because of the size. A solid state, fanless mini-ITX system would have all the advantages of a non-solid state mini-ITX but with minimal noise and heat. The main disadvantage is the read\write problems of flash memory. All in all I'm leaning towards a non-solid state mini-ITX because of the read\write issues of flash memory. So, after this overview of what I do know, my questions are: Are all these services even providable from a single server? To my best understanding they are, but then again, I might be wrong. Is any of these solutions viable? If yes, which one is the best for my purposes? If not, what would you suggest? Also, on a more software oriented note: OS wise, I'm planning to run Linux. I'm currently thinking of four options I've been recommended: CentOS, Gentoo, DSL (Damn Small Linux) and LFS (Linux From Scratch). Any thoughts on this? Any other distro you would recomend? Regarding FTP services, I've herd good things about FileZila. Anyone has any experience with that? Do you recommend it? Do you recommend something else? Regarding the Mail service, I know nothing about this except that it exists. Any software you recommend for this task? Home media, same as mail service. Any recommended software? In case of a desktop computer, plugging off the power cord looks like the most direct solution, but are there possible side-effects, apart from losing unsaved data? More problematic seems the laptop, with removing the battery being the equivalent, but is it a good idea overall?

  • VLAN issues between linux kernels 2.6 / 3.3 in an ESX / Cisco environment

    I shall attempt to explain an issue I have encountered - I have a VM running on esx 4.1 with an interface connected to VLAN800 via an access port on a cisco 3750. It runs linux - kernel 2.6.24, and has about 5 to 10 Mbit of chatter on 10.10.0.0/16 and various multicast addresses to look after. I needed to isolate certain devices from certain other devices on the network, with all of them having to talk to that one VM. No, the address space can't be separated, nor can the networks be easily vlan'd apart. The software on the VM listens to one interface only. Private vlans appear to be the way to go. So as a test, I built a bridge on the VM that globs together the vlans as needed. All good, everything works as expected. But occasionally (sigh) there's some latency that trips up a couple of profinet devices on the network because, you know, you're not really supposed to trunk real-time protocols around the place willy-nilly. I shift it to our test/backup server - works nicely, but I don't want it to be running on the test server as we muck around with that a lot. So I says to myself, "I'll put it on a new VM for testing and tweaking." I download a small linux distro with kernel 3.3, and install as a new VM with a the vlans as separate interfaces for testing. I power up the testing VM - ok. I bring up all the separate interfaces - ok. I can ping the production VM, see all sorts of traffic going past with tshark, etc. I build a bridge and put the primary vlan on it - the production VM running 2.6 immediately loses its multicast traffic - Unicast is fine. (?) I shut down the bridge - still no multicast traffic (!?) I power-cycle the production VM(!?!?) - multicast traffic returns. I trunk everything into the testing VM and create vlan interfaces under linux instead - same result, as soon as I start the bridge.... no multicast on the production VM. Ok, so I take a break and leave things alone. I decide to play with a couple of ubiquiti bullet radios - I'm testing various firmware as a side project. I flash a radio with Open-wrt-12.09. I enable a trunk on a port on a cisco on our network so I can muck around with multiple vlans and SSIDs I power up the radio and connect - ok. I create a vlan interface from the trunk.... the same vlan as the production VM wayyyyy over there, three cisco routers away. Ok. I bridge the vlan interface to the wifi interface and immediately get a phone call. The production VM has (suprise!) lost its multicast traffic. Again, nothing comes back until I power-cycle the VM. What the hell is going on?

    Hi. I'm running Windows XP SP3 on a NEC Versa L1100 laptop. If I wake my laptop up from Stand By, no attached USB devices will function. Device Manager shows all USB entries to be working properly. There is an option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the Power Management properties of USB entries. Is this causing the issue or something else? I have the latest drivers for my motherboard installed.

This seemed to start after I installed the canon pixma printer driver and software from their website.   • Finding a cause of shutdown/sleep

    My server running is Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.54-2 x86_64 GNU/Linux. About once a day, sometimes once every two days is shut down - It isn't really shut down, it seems like its sleeping - Power button is blinking, but I cannot boot it by clicking on power or reset button, I must pull electricity out and plug it back in, then I can boot it.   • Is data=journal on a separate device on Ext4 as good as using a RAID controller with battery backed cache for file system consistency?

    It seems to me that data=journal prevents file system inconsistency in the case of power failure. Using it with a dedicated journal device mitigates the performance penalty of writing the data twice. A power outage would still lose the data that is currently being written to the journal, but the file system on disk would always be consistent. If that amount of loss is acceptable, is a RAID controller with battery backed cache really worthwhile?

    So i've got a 1.6 emulator running. I have a receiver with action power connected and disconnected filters. when i connect to the emulator through telnet and issue the power ac on or power ac off command, logcat shows: 01-11 21:33:01.096: ERROR/BatteryService(67): Could not open '/sys/class/power_supply/usb/online' 01-11 21:33:01.104: ERROR/BatteryService(67): Could not open '/sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_vol' 01-11 21:33:01.104: ERROR/BatteryService(67): Could not open '/sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_temp' and my receiver does not get activated. It was working just fine yesterday and now it does not. I tried reinstalling the AVD, and also deleted and reinstalled the SDK from the SDK manager. Works fine in my 2.2 emulator. Any ideas?

    Hi, I am trying to format a date as follows using Rails 3; 3rd June 2003. This is not a standard way of showing the date, so I have looked into a custom way of doing it. Rails 3.0 documentation here suggests that I add a file at config/initializers/time_formats.rb containing the following code: Time::DATE_FORMATS[:custom_date] = lambda { |time| time.strftime("#{time.day.ordinalize} %B %Y") } And then call it using something like: <%= document.publish_date.to_formatted_s(:custom_date) %> However this isn't working and the date is being formatted as YYYY-MM-YY. Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers
