How can I prevent Google mistakenly offering to translate a page?

Several of my site's pages are appearing in search results with [Translate this page] next to it. When I click that it takes me to Google Translate and translates my page "from Catalan to English". The pages are in English but have a couple of foreign words (actually Japanese romanisations, not Catalan) that appear to be tripping Google up. A few weeks ago I set the html tag to <html lang="en"> which from research appears to be the best method to specify the language of a document. Google has cached the pages with this attribute but it is still offering to translate. More research led me to a "notranslate" attribute which prevents translation entirely: <html lang="en" class="notranslate">. The problem now is users cannot translate from English to their desired language! Are there any other solutions that force Google to parse my site as English only?

Connection manager detects network but won't connect

I've just installed 12.04 on my home desktop. Because of where it's located, in order not to have my children tripping over cat5 cable, I've got a cheap 802.11n USB device plugged in, which uses a Realtek 8192CU chip. The house wifi is protected with WPA2. Ubuntu's Network Manager detects the network, but connecting to it just times out and asks for the password again. I'm sure I'm using the correct password. No other computers on the house network are having any difficulty. This device previously worked correctly with both Windows 7 and OpenBSD in the same machine. The linux-firmware package is installed (from the disc) at version 1.79, and /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin is present. dmesg|grep rtl only shows the "loading firmware" message. I've tried Google, but I apparently can't find the right set of words to plug in, because I haven't found anything related (lots of "doesn't work at all," but nothing matching my circumstances). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Developing Salesforce apps in Ruby on Rails

I want to build a web app that uses Salesforce.com data, and I want to build it fast. I'm a .NET developer (WPF, C#, ASP.NET MVC). I understand Ruby and RoR fairly well, but I haven't delivered any Rails apps. I'm wondering, is Ruby on Rails a suitable tool for rapidly building Salesforce apps, or is it better for the "traditional" web2.0 stuff like Groupon and Twitter? In other words, would using RoR help me achieve my fast (e.g., three months) goal over using .NET, which I already know?

2D shader to draw representation of rotating sphere.

I want to display a 3D textured sphere, and then rotate it in one direction. The direction will never change, and the camera will never move. One way is to actually create a spherical mesh, map a texture to it, rotate the sphere, and render in 3D. My question is, is there a way to display a 2D circle, that looks like a rotating sphere, with just a 2D shader. In other words, can someone think of a trick, like mapping a texture to the circle in a particular way, to give the appearance of an in-place rotating sphere, that is always viewed from the side? I don't need exact shader code, I'm just looking for the right idea.

Does software used to create 3d assets (for game development specifically) have an impact on the efficiency of the program. In other words. Is it possible to reduce the operating footprint of an application merely by utilizing alternative development software during production of 3d assets. If you use two different applications to create a 3 dimensional image of a box, can one of them result in better performance if aspects of the image are identical? Sorry if this question seems vague, I am attempting to get the information I need without causing unnecessary debate over specific software choice. Thank you.

AdSense Custom Search Ads - custom quesry

i'm trying to set up a custom search ad, but I am nost sure about the query. On the site it says (https://developers.google.com/custom-search-ads/docs/implementation-guide) 'query' should be dynamic based on your page. This variable targets the ads and therefore should always match what the user on your site has just performed a search for. Now, what I understand is: I have to program my page so that the query variable contains some custom words. Am I right? If a user gets to my site through clicking on an adsense, there is no way to "know" what the user looked for and display my query accordingly, right? Thanks for any help!

Using disqus for a website (question on SERP and backlink)

I am building a website and am trying to decide between writing my own commenting system and using disquss. One of the main deciding factors is that (obviously), I want comments left on my page to be show on SERPS. However, I remeber reading somewhere that disqus loads comments into a page using AJAX - and therefore the comments are "invisible" as far as Googlebot and other SE crawlers are concerned. Could someone confirm or refute this? The other question I have is about whether (as a commenter), When I place a comment on another website using disqus (including any links I may add to my comment), do the lionks in my comment count as a backlink (in other words are they "dofollow" or "nofollow" links)?

A simple message room

Can anyone recommend a simple message room (not chat room) which I can use for a private communication between my users. My idea: to grant some users (2-3 at the most) a specific privilege to talk privately in a message room. none of them would be administrator there. I need such features: - admin panel for adding users allowed to post messages in room - room invisible to anyone except users - filtering not-allowed words - Ajax-enabled so that replies appear immediately - other message room features I have a linux hosting so PHP message room would be the best option. Some things that I have found through research: 100 - 150 Chars long is ideal 3-5 words in your url, according to Matt Cutts Use .htaccess to force clean urls Do not duplicate data (important) Clean and precise, describing the content Use hyphens On the homepage, I try to detect the users location based on IP, but this isn't always accurate, and not always reliable. So until they put in their city/location, I can't always use this structure but this is potentially work-able. For Searching, a form post to a results page: domain.com/jobs/[city]/[search] ie: domain.com/jobs/toronto/sales manager/ OR domain.com/search/jobs/toronto/sales manager/ or do I remove the word JOBS and just use Search. I trying to keep good search terms in the URL, but also keep it clean and concise. Can someone give me some feedback and thoughts to 'why'...

Samsung 700Z broken by Precise install

I tried to install Precise from DVD media and got to the point where the Ubuntu logo is on screen indicating the the installer is loading. At that point the screen went dark. After some time I rebooted the machine. To my dismay the machine would no longer start (Powers on but but no bios start up screen, I can hear initial hard drive spin which soon dies). This is a new machine (less than 2 months) and I have had no previous indications of defects before this incident. In other words, I am convinced the Ubuntu install had something to do with the failure of the machine. Has anyone else had this problem with this model machine? Is this known to happen with precise or other versions of Ubuntu?

Automated backups for Windows Azure SQL Database

One of the questions that I've often been asked is about how you can backup databases in Windows Azure SQL Database. What we have had access to was the ability to export a database to a BACPAC. A BACPAC is basically just a zip file that contains a bunch of metadata along with a set of bcp files for each of the tables in the database. Each table in the database is exported one after the other, so this does not produce a transactionally-consistent backup at a specific point in time. To get a transactionally-consistent copy, you need a database that isn't in use.The easiest way to get a database that isn't in use is to use CREATE DATABASE AS COPY OF. This creates a new database as a transactionally-consistent copy of the database that you are copying. You can then use the export options to get a consistent BACPAC created.Previously, I've had to automate this process by myself. Given there was also no SQL Agent in Azure, I used a job in my on-premises SQL Server to do this, using a linked server configuration.Now there's a much simpler way. Windows Azure SQL Database now supports an automated export function. On the Configuration tab for the database, you need to enable the Automated Export function. You can configure how often the operation is performed for you, and which storage account will be used for the backups.It's important to consider the cost impacts of this as well. You are charged for how ever many databases are on your server on a given day. So if you enable a daily backup, you will double your database costs. Do not schedule the backups just before midnight UTC, as that could cause you to have three databases each day instead of one.This is a much needed addition to the capabilities. Scott Guthrie also posted about some other notable changes today, including a preview of a new premium offering for SQL Database. In addition to the Web and Business editions, there will now be a Premium edition that has reserved (rather than shared) resources. Will Tracking Subdomains as Single Entity with Google Analytics Help SEO? [closed]

Possible Duplicate: Does Google Analytics data affect SEO? We have two subdomains, one for our blog and one for our ecommerce store. The blog serves to bring traffic and the store is how we monetize the site. We have them designed to appear as one large site, but I know google sees them as two sites. Here is how the subdomains look: www.example.com (store) blog.example.com (blog) I believe I can configure analytics to use subdomain tracking as explained here: http://support.google.com/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55524 But my question is whether this will cause google to see our 2 subdomains as one larger domain for SEO purposes. In other words, is there any relationship to how you configure google analytics and how google indexes and ranks your website(s) and pages? Is there anything I need to do in anaytics or webmaster tools to make google aware that these two subdomains work together as one website? Thanks! Sam

Q&A: Will my favourite ORM Foo work with SQL Azure?

short answer: Quite probably, as SQL Azure is very similar to SQL Server longer answer: Object Relational Mappers (ORMs) that work with SQL Server are likely but not guaranteed to work with SQL Azure. The differences between the RDBMS versions are small – but may cause problems, for example in tools used to create the mapping between objects and tables or in generated SQL from the ORM which expects “certain things” :-) More specifically: ADO.NET Entity Framework / LINQ to Entities can be used with SQL Azure, but the Visual Studio designer does not currently work. You will need to point the designer at a version of your database running of SQL Server to create the mapping, then change the connection details to run against SQL Azure. LINQ to SQL has similar issues to ADO.NET Entity Framework above NHibernate can be used against SQL Azure DevExpress XPO supports SQL Azure from version 9.3 DataObjects.Net supports SQL Azure Open Access from Telerik works “seamlessly” - their words not mine :-) The list above is by no means comprehensive – please leave a comment with details of other ORMs that work (or do not work) with SQL Azure. Samba network sharing NTFS drives and root permissions from local drives

I'm able to share my internal 2ndry NTFS drives (sdb1,2 and 3) on the network with Windows computers now but even though Samba read/write is enabled, Windows network computers can only open files "read-only" and can't save files to the samba shared drives/folders. I try to set permissions in Ubuntu via folder and/or file properties even logged in root via Nautilus but all the samba shared folders and files are set as owner = root, accessible and does not allow me to change them to read/write, it just resets to root, accessible, in other words, I can't change permissions. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 Gnome on an old Dell Dimension 2400. Also, in order to for me to copy or move any files from the Ubuntu drive to the sdb1,2 or 3 drives, I have to gksu nautilus. This consequently prevents me from copying .ISO files to my "Multisys" thumb drive too.

Reason: The physical disk is already in use. ====================== When I powered on my Ubuntu on VMwave, a window showed up within words above. I tried to remove the old hard disk in settings and created a new one, but it still doesnot work. Also, I tried to delete the .lck files and even the doc. BUT....... Has someone solved this problem? mismatch of version of libkdcraw20 and libkdcraw-data

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. When I'm installlin digiKam, I'm getting a mismatch in the versions of libkdcraw20 and libkdcraw-data wanted by it and that available in the repositories. It wants version 4.8.5-0ubuntu0.2 (or in other words that is the latest version according to synaptic) but the available one is 4.8.5-0ubuntu0.3 in both cases. Is there a work-around? Or how do I request the Ubuntu managers to rectify this? addenda On Synaptic i selected digikam to be installed. it downloaded all the dependencies but the 2 in question were not found - the message it gave "W: Failed to fetch security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libk/libkdcraw/… 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.91.13 80]". I google-searched the 2 files in the repositories to find that the version available there is ubuntu0.3 instead of ubuntu0.2.

Application use on website

Is there a good way to run a C# application on clientside in lieu of JavaScript? I have done some front end work with JavaScript and backend C# for web developing at an old job, but I am interested in hosting a website myself soon. I have a C# application I would like to be open source, but before people care to download I'd like them to be able to use it. At its basic level it's a simple text editor, but there's much more to it in the nitty gritty. I could write it in JavaScript, but it would require me to keep documentation and up to date changes on JavaScript and C# in that case. I was thinking of creating an AJAX panel and somehow loading my winform application into a frame, but I don't know how or what words to google because I've never done it before except AJAX.

Trying to recover deleted Ubuntu partition

I made a mistake in logging into my 200 GB Ubuntu partition. I could not access Grub after that. Using a live CD I then ran Boot_Repair and apparently deleted the partition, I guess because I ran it from my 70 GB Windows partition. I can send the results of boot_info before that and of Boot_Repair. Then I ran TestDisk, which apparently found only dev/sda/ -320GB / 298 / GiB - WDC - WD3200BEVT-22A23T0 (Was there any more I could have done with TestDisk? I looked at the TestDisk_Step_By_Step example and found no way forward given that no other partitions turned up) I have run gpart and found this: /sda1 - 15 GB /sda2 - system reserved /sda3 - 70.15 GB /sda4 - extended 212.84 unallocated - 209.10 /sda5 - unknown 3.74 . I have been told I can recover the partition using gparted's Rescue start end command, but I don't know what to enter for start and end. [--EDIT: TestDisk Deeper Search stated that "the following partitions can't be recovered" and listed a 220-GB Linux partition 6 times. Then it stated that "The current number of heads per cylinder is 255 but the correct value may be 128" and I could try to change it in the Geometry menu (because apparently these are overlapping partitions) So should I do that?--]

My new anti-patent BSD-based license: necessary and effective? [closed]

I am writing multimedia software in a domain that is rife with software patents. I want to open source my software but only for the benefit of those who don't play the patent game, that is enthusiasts, small companies, research projects, etc. The idea is, if my code would infringe a software patent somewhere and a company pays to license that patent, they then lose the right to use and distribute my software. Now I detest license proliferation as much as anyone but I can't find an existing OSI approved license that does this. The GPL comes close, but it only restricts distribution, not use. I want to stop someone using my software should they obtain a patent license to do so. Does another license do this job?
