• Broadcom BCM4313 wireless slow and high-latency

  Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit on a Dell Latitude E6330 laptop. Wireless is pretty slow. It gets connected quick enough, but then it acts like a dialup connection. My ssh sessions over WiFi are slow and laggy. Even browsing is slow, the pages are loading like it's 1998. This does not depend on the access point, it's the same both at home and at work. Other systems work fine on these access points. I had an older Dell laptop before, different WiFi hardware, and it was much faster over the same wireless access points. Is this a known issue with this hardware? If so, any solutions?

• Wrapping up an Exciting Mobile World Congress

  Its been a busy week here in Barcelona, with noticeably more energy at the show than in 2010. This year, we decided to move the Java booth to the App Planet and really engage with the increasing number of developers that are attending the event. Our booth featured 10 demos and a series of nearly 25 workshops featuring a variety of topics ranging from information about Java Verified, to the use of web technologies with Java ME, to sessions hosted by Operators such as Orange and Telefonica (see image to the left).One of the more popular topics in our booth was the use of Java in the Smart Grid. In our booth we were showing off some of the work of the Hydra Consortium whose goal it is to leverage the emerging smart grid infrastructure to securely enable the delivery of personal health data (weight, blood pressure, etc) from the home to your doctor.   I've dig the database here and didn't found any answer for my question. What is a standard for a php programmer to know? I mean, literally, what group of language functions, mechanisms, variables should person know to consider oneself a (good) php programmer? (I know 'being good' is beyond language syntax, still I'm considering syntax of plain php only) To give an example what I mean: functions to control http sessions, cookies functions to control connection with databases functions to control file handling functions to control xml etc.. I omit phrases like 'security' or 'patterns' or 'framework' intentionally as it applies to every programming language. Hope I made myself clear, any input appreciated :) Note: Michael J.V. is right claiming that databases are independent from language, so to put my question more precisely and emphasise differences: Practises or security, are some ideas to implement (there is no 'Pattern' object with 'Decorator()' method, is there?) while using databases means knowing a mysqli and a set of its methods.

Today we give our first technical session, Oracle Optimizer: Harnessing the Power of Optimizer Hints (Session CON8455) at 1:15pm, in Moscone South - room 103. In this session we will discuss in detail how Optimizer hints are interpreted, when they should be used, why they appear to be ignored and what you can do if you have inherited a hint ridden application. The Optimizer team will also be at the Oracle Database Demogrounds all day.  Demogrounds open at 9:45 am and run until 6pm.   So you went to the JavaOne/Oracle Develop registration and noticed that this pass doesn't include entry to the Oracle OpenWorld (OOW) sessions. Then you looked at the OOW pass and noticed this one doesn't include access to Oracle Develop and JavaOne. What's up with this? What if you want to see session in all of the above? • Coding style advice? [closed]

  I'm a newly grad. I've got a lot of complaints from my supervisor at work during code-review sessions with regard to my coding style (Surprise!). I don't know if it's just him being cranky or my style is really that annoying to read. I come from the low-level language world (assembly, mostly), so I've been taught to use bitwise ops and all the cool tricks to do math whenever possible. I also have the habits of doing some other things that've been regarded as "too excessively dense to read". So I'm hoping to get some feedback from any experienced programmers! :) Also how should I justify between code performance and readability? Thanks!!

• Example: Controlling randomizer using code contracts

  One cool addition to Visual Studio 2010 is support for code contracts. Code contracts make sure that all conditions under what method is supposed to run correctly are met. Those who are familiar with unit tests will find code contracts easy to use. In this posting I will show you simple example about static contract checking (example solution is included). To try out code contracts you need at least Visual Studio 2010 Standard Edition. Also you need code contracts package. You can download package from DevLabs Code Contracts page. NB! Speakers, you can use the example solution in your presentations as long as you mention me and this blog in your sessions. Solution has readme.txt file that gives you steps to go through when presenting solution in sessions. This blog posting is companion posting for Visual Studio solution referred below. As an example let’s look at the following class. public class Randomizer {     public static int GetRandomFromRange(int min, int max)     {         var rnd = new Random();         return rnd.Next(min, max);     }       public static int GetRandomFromRangeContracted(int min, int max)     {         Contract.Requires(min < max, "Min must be less than max");           var rnd = new Random();         return rnd.Next(min, max);     } } GetRandomFromRange() method returns results without any checking. GetRandomFromRangeContracted() uses one code contract that makes sure that minimum value is less than maximum value. Now let’s run the following code. class Program {     static void Main(string[] args)     {         var random1 = Randomizer.GetRandomFromRange(0, 9);         Console.WriteLine("Random 1: " + random1);           var random2 = Randomizer.GetRandomFromRange(1, 1);         Console.WriteLine("Random 2: " + random2);           var random3 = Randomizer.GetRandomFromRangeContracted(5, 5);         Console.WriteLine("Random 3: " + random3);           Console.WriteLine(" ");         Console.WriteLine("Press any key to exit ...");         Console.ReadKey();     } } As we have not turned on support for code contracts the code runs without any problems and we get no warnings by Visual Studio that something is wrong. Now let’s turn on static checking for code contracts. As you can see then code still compiles without any errors but Visual Studio warns you about possible problems with contracts. Click on image to see it at original size.  When we open Error list and run our application we get the following output to errors list. Note that these messages are not shown immediately. There is little delay between application starting and appearance of these messages. So wait couple of seconds before going out of your mind. Click on image to see it at original size.  If you look at these warnings you can see that warnings show you illegal calls and also contracts against what they are going.
