• Cannot install Windows 7 on new PC (BSOD during installation)

  Yesterday I had received new hardware and tried to assemble all of it. But when I was installing Windows 7 x64 for two times I got a BSOD, and a error message like this: Your PC has rebooted unexpectly, installation will continue after reboot. I have checked everything and tried to install once more time. It was almost successful, Windows had installed, but I cannot format my disk, open cmd or control panel, boot from DVD etc. It's the first time I have assembled a PC, and I don't know where the problem is, in my hardware or in Windows. My components: MSI z77a-g43 Intel i5 3570k Seagate Barracuda (plug into sata3 slot 6 Gb, there I have also sata 3 Gb slot) Corsair XMS3 (4x4Gb) HIS IceQ Also in the BIOS, I have changed RAM frequency to DDR3 1600 and voltage to 1.65v

• Plugging in USB flash drive only shows error 43, "Unknown device"

  My friend saved by his works onto my flash drive which was detectable/openable, but ... The very next day, the drive wouldn't show up in My Computer and Windows gave him error code 43 (Unknown device). I tried others few systems that once detected his flash drive but the problem still persisted. I don't know whether or not his flash drive is damaged but when plug/un-plugging, there are still sounds coming out though. Tried solutions: On Vista Home Premium (his computer): Uninstalled -- Restarted computer -- Re-installed (ERROR 43) On Windows 7 (my computer): Uninstalled -- Restarted computer -- Can't install (ERROR 43) It seems that my computer (Windows 7) had the lastest drivers already but still can't detect it. Its a Kingston DataTraveller 101 (DT101) 8GB. Could unplugging the flash drive without clicking "Safely Remove Hardware" have caused the problem?

• Throttle network bandwidth per application in Mac OS X

  I notice that iTunes seems to suck up all my bandwidth and doesn’t play nice with other applications that use the web when it's downloading. In fact, it doesn't even give itself enough bandwidth when browsing the iTunes Store while downloading large or many files (podcasts, TV shows, large apps, etc). I'm not concerned with getting all my downloads as soon as possible, they're really low priority, and I'd rather not have to do this while I'm awake, but I can't hit the refresh button if I'm in bed and forgot it already. Is there an application or tool via the Terminal to limit the download bandwidth that iTunes gets without also hindering web browsers or other applications? FOSS/GPL software is preferable, but pay software might be acceptable too.

  I'm not sure which, but I just had a heck of a time getting my computer to boot up and not freeze. It would run until it finished booting windows, then everything would freeze. This happened until I turned off turboboost and all the c states on the processor. What could be causing this? Is the processor going bad?

  I am running a centos 5 image on the vmware player and as of recently, I was able to check out from a repository that is no longer working. I am now getting: svn: Unknown hostname 'www.kennykong.com' It is a valid hostname and I know this because I have this svn location on Windows and I can browse/checkout no problem.   I like to surf securely and privately via a SOCKS proxy which I created via SSH tunneling, on the Mac. I used the SSH client on my Mac to achieve this. Then I thought, since the iPhone OS is essentially Mac OS, the same trick might work also on the iPhone. I managed to create a SSh tunnel on my iPhone via the Terminal (iPhone's Terminal). (Yes, it's jail-broken) ssh -D [port] [email protected] At this stage my iPhone is SOCKS proxy. However, there doesn't seem to be a way in the iPhone networking preference panel to specify a SOCKS proxy. Someone suggest creating a Proxy Auto-Contig (PAC) file to workaround this, but that sounds complicated. Any ideas how to make iPhone use it's own SOCKS proxy?

  I have several tab groups (~ 20) in Firefox. I can start the browser without any problems. However, as soon as I … click at the "Group tabs" icon in the toolbar, or right-click on a tab and hover over "Move to tab group", … Firefox becomes unresponsible/freezes for a rather long time (more than 2 minutes). It seems to load all tab groups (it doesn't load all the pages! I deactivated this in the settings).   I had Windows Vista + Ubuntu running on my system. I deleted the ubuntu partitions from Windows. However, when I start the system, GRUB throws up an Error 22 (missing partition) and does not let me boot into Windows. The CD ROM on my laptop is fried and therefore I tried installing Ubuntu again using a USB install. However, the version Ubuntu 9.10 justs hangs in the load screen and does nothing. I do not have windows Vista Recovery CD (as it was a recovery partition in my laptop). What are the options I have? How do I fix this?

  I recently got a new laptop (Asus G73JH-A2) which has two identical hard drives in it. Unfortunately the motherboard does not have a RAID controller. What I would like to do is run the drives in a RAID-0 configuration to improve performance (plus get the extra capacity on one partition). I would like Windows installed onto the striped volume (RAID 0). I have spent some time using diskpart to create a striped volume across the two drives, however when I go to install windows and select the volume it will not let me select 'Next' giving the error "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. The partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation." I'm hoping theres a step that I am missing that will allow me to install windows on a striped volume. Any ideas?

  When you are watching a screen sharing session commanded by the other user, in other words, you are watching the other user doing stuff in his computer, how do I switch back to my computer without disrupting the other user by stealing the mouse to click on the "My Computer" window? Put simply: To go back to my computer I have to click in the "My computer" little window at the bottom, but that requires me to use the mouse which is being used by the other user. There must be a way to use a keyboard shortcut to perform that action without bothering the other user who is using the mouse to do something important. Anyone? Thanks, -Sergio

• OSX esc key stops working (randomly)

  I have a 2011 macbook Air with OS X Mountain Lion (I've upgraded from Lion). And ever since upgrading my escape key randomly stops working. And it's not that the keyboard on the laptop would be damaged as the same happens if I use apple's bluetooth keyboard. So I'm guessing it's a software issue. Also in some cases pressing ctrl+esc achieves the same thing as just esc so I'm 100% it's not a hardware problem. Does anybody have any idea what this might be all about and how to fix it? edit: the escape key stops working completely but it starts working again after I restart the computer. edit2: this usually happens after the computer wakes from sleep. So it's not like that is just stopps working in the middle of using it, but rather after I put it to sleep (or just close the lid) and then open it again. Has nobody got the same issue? Is there a better place to ask OSX related questions than SuperUser maybe?

"import ppm:- | gocr -i - | xclip -selection c" works, but gocr is unreliable: simple text on a webpage has errors. It is a clear font but the OCR tool always misses "r" and replaces it with underscore. "import ppm:- | ocrad -i - | xclip -selection c" says "ocrad: maxval 255 in ppm "P6" file." tesseract needs an image file and does not accept piping input to it. xfce4-screenshooter does not do OCR.
