• Icon backdrop on Samsung Galaxy S? how to change this?

  Hi all, I see a backdrop being added to my launch icon on the Samsung Galaxy S devices. I need this backdrop changed to a custom backdrop which we created. I know this can be changed since apps like"Daily Briefing" have their own cloud like backdrop making the launch icon look really rich. If anyone does know how to change this backdrop please let me know. I am talking about the background image set behind the icons. Eg: in the below image on the 1st row can you notice the yellow backdrop for Memo app, Green backdrop for Mini Diary app, similarily in the 3rd row notice the green backdrop behind the MAIL app.... I need to change these backdrops. Thanks in advance. Appreciate your help.

• Proper usage of double and single quotes?

  I'm talking about the performance increase here. From all I know you can echo variables in double quotes ("), like so: <?php echo "You are $yourAge years old"; ?> But single quotes will just return You are $yourAge years old. But what about performance differences? I've always gone by the rule that single quotes are faster because the PHP interpreter doesn't have to search through the string for variables. But I'm seeing more and more blog and forum posts on the web saying differently. Does anyone actually have any information on this subject? Perhaps benchmark tests or something?

  Perl and PHP do this with backticks. For example: $output = `ls`; This code returns a directory listing into the variable $output. A similar function, system("ls"), returns the operating system return code for the given command. I'm talking about a variant that returns whatever the command prints to stdout. (There are better ways to get the list of files in a directory; the example code is an example of this concept.) How do other languages do this? Is there a canonical name for this function? (I'm going with "backtick"; though maybe I could coin "syslurp".)

• Specifying default value for django hidden form field - bone DRY?

  So let's say at the last minute (in the view) I decide I want to specify a default for a field and make it hidden, like so: form.fields['coconut'] = forms.ModelChoiceField(label="", widget=forms.HiddenInput(), queryset=swallow.coconuts.all(), initial=some_particular_coconut) My question is this: Do I really need to specify queryset here? I mean, I already know, from initial, exactly which coconut I'm talking about. Why do I also need to specify that the universe of available coconuts is the set of coconuts which this particular swallow carried (by the husk)? Is there a way I can refrain from specifying queryset? Simply omitting causes django to raise TypeError. If indeed it is required, isn't this a bit damp?

  I want to learn how to make levels using cocos2d and box2d (for iOS). I am talking about a 2d platformer such as Limbo or Braid or something like that. How can I design and build levels like this? I have seen Level Helper for cocos2d but its not free and I don't think it makes physic objects for box2d. How is this accomplished in real games? How to make camera move with character and so on.   What I'm talking about is: Is it possible that under certain circumstances the CPU "buggs" and suddenly responses 1+1=2? In which parts of the computer can that happen (HDD, RAM, Mainboard)? What could be the causes? Bad quality? Overheating? Does that even happen? When yes, how frequently? If everything is okay with the CPU (not a single fault in production, good temperature), can that still happen sometimes? What would be the results of, let's say one to three wrong computations? This is programming related as it would be nice to know if you can even rely on the hardware to return the right results.

• Write a serverside c++/openGL App, that is accessible via JavaScript

  Hi, I am currently having an idea where I want to save an image from a c++/openGL application on demand from a browser. So basically I would like to run the application itself on the server and have a simple communication layer like this: JS - tell application to do calculations (and maybe pass a string or some simple data) application - tell JS when finished and maybe send a link, text or something as simple as that. I don't really have alot of experience with webservers and as such don't know if that is possible at all (it's just my naive thinking). And note: I am not talking about a webGL application, I just want to have simple communication between a c++ serverside application, and the user. Any ideas how to do that? Thanks alot!

• Java Thread Message Passing

  I'm writing an Android app. I have a main method, which creates and runs a new Thread using an anonymous inner Runnable class. The run() method, when it's done, calls a method on it's parent class (in the main thread) that calls notifyDataSetChanged() so that the main thread can redraw the new data. This is causing all kinds of trouble (ViewRoot$CalledFromWrongThreadException). The thing is, this method being called from the worker thread is on the class that's created in the UI thread. Shouldn't that be running on the UI thread? Or am I missing something? • How can I set breakpoints in an external JS script in Firebug

  I can easily set breakpoints in embedded JS functions, but I don't see any way of accessing extarnal JS scripts via Firebug unless I happen to enter them during a debug session. Is there a way to do this w/o having to 'explore' my way into the script? @Jason: This is a good point, but in my case I do not have easy access to the script. I am specifically talking about the client scripts which are invoked by the ASP.Net Validators that I would like to debug. I can access them during a debug session through entering the function calls, but I could not find a way to access them directly.

• iphone dev - loading table content asynchronously

  My app has a navigation controller which push and pop a series of views. One of the tableViews loads .xml file from URL and it takes 4-5 seconds. If I click the back button on the navigation bar, it will only respond after the content of the table finish loading. Is there an easy way to load the content asynchronously so that the app will still respond to my gesture on the navigation bar? p.s. I search this on the Internet and people are talking about multithreading. I don't know a lot about threads so please be more specific. Thanks in advanced =)

• iPad portrait... zoomed in on load, div not at full width

  When testing out my site on my iPad, the layout works as expected in landscape mode. When I try it in portrait mode, it is zoomed in, cutting off about 20% of the right hand side. And when I zoom that out, the background of the header and the footer containers only stretches the width that it was when zoomed in. I've dug around a bit online, and I'm suspecting it might have something to do with my meta tag. When I get rid of that tag completely, it displays the way I want it to, but gets rid of any responsive layout that I've designed for less than 767px when I load it on my iPhone. (Displays as if it wasn't responsive at all). Any ideas as to how I might go about fixing this? (Here's one of the pages that I'm talking about http://dotwong.com/test/tip/docking/)

• Stopping an if clause along with the whole PHP script, but not HTML

  Hello there, I've been having this problem for around an hour, and have searched the internet for answers. I've checked the PHP documentation, looked around, Googled, nothing. Anyways, my problem is that after I try to validate something (and it's wrong), if I use exit; it will also stop the HTML after. Here's what I'm talking about: if ($_POST['exampleEmail'] == "") { echo "Please enter an e-mail."; //Now I want only the PHP script to stop, however... exit; //If I use exit, then the HTML after this script (footer) doesn't show. } If anyone can help, please do. I've tried using break, but to no avail, since it's only for loops and switches. If there is a better/more correct (or simply correct if this is the wrong way), please share. I've had this problem in the past, and I just used exit then. Thanks.

• Forward a call to a webservice to another webservice?

  If I have an https webservice behind a firewall on a machine (A) that I cannot access, but access to a machine on the same network (B), from where I can call the webservice on machine A. What is the best way of talking with the webservice on machine A, from the outside via machine B (that I access via VPN)? I can obviously create a service with a matching interface on machine B, and call the methods on the webservice on machine A, and return the result. But I fear for the overhead. Is there another way? Can i somehow forward the request?

  How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence the second part of my question, which is really the most important part: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using? • Possible to not use ID field but another column name? in Lift

  I am connected to a oracle database from a scala/lift webapp. I have been able to successfully pull information from the database as I wished but am having one issue. For each table I want to access I am required to add an ID field so that the app will work with the trait IdPK. What mapper class or trait can I use to override this? I have been trying to find one but been unable to locate it. Figured people have not always had an ID field on every table they make that is just called ID... class DN_REC extends LongKeyedMapper[DN_REC] with IdPK { def getSingleton = DN_REC object dn_rec_id extends MappedInt(this){ } This is what I am talking about.   Hello, I am writing a program and part of it is to store the keyed entry in a database on an sql server when the enter key is hit. The database is small and simple with only three entry spots in the table. one for the tracking number, one for the date entered, and one for the time entered. The only thing the user will see is the tracking number text box and an enter button. the date and time will be auto entered when the enter key is hit. i am relatively new to databases so i cannot figure out how to send the data to the database. • c++ simple start a function with its own thread

• Do (statically linked) DLLs use a different heap than the main program?

  I'm new to Windows programming and I've just "lost" two hours hunting a bug which everyone seems aware of: you cannot create an object on the heap in a DLL and destroy it in another DLL (or in the main program). I'm almost sure that on Linux/Unix this is NOT the case (if it is, please say it, but I'm pretty sure I did that thousands of times without problems...). At this point I have a couple of questions: 1) Do statically linked DLLs use a different heap than the main program? 2) Is the statically linked DLL mapped in the same process space of the main program? (I'm quite sure the answer here is a big YES otherwise it wouldn't make sense passing pointers from a function in the main program to a function in a DLL). I'm talking about plain/regular DLL, not COM/ATL services EDIT: By "statically linked" I mean that I don't use LoadLibrary to load the DLL but I link with the stub library
