• Why is ListBoxFor not selecting items, but ListBox is?

  I have the following code in my view: <%= Html.ListBoxFor(c => c.Project.Categories, new MultiSelectList(Model.Categories, "Id", "Name", new List<int> { 1, 2 }))%> <%= Html.ListBox("MultiSelectList", new MultiSelectList(Model.Categories, "Id", "Name", new List<int> { 1, 2 }))%> The only difference is that the first helper is strongly typed (ListBoxFor), and it fails to show the selected items (1,2), even though the items appear in the list, etc. The simpler ListBox is working as expected. I'm obviously missing something here. I can use the second approach, but this is really bugging me and I'd like to figure it out. Update 2 Ok, this is purely naming, for example, this works... <%= Html.ListBox("Project_Tags", new MultiSelectList(Model.Tags, "Id", "Name", Model.Project.Tags.Select(t => t.Id)))%> ...because the field name is Project_Tags, not Project.Tags, in fact, anything other than Tags or Project.Tags will work. I don't get why this would cause a problem (other than that it matches the entity name), and I'm not good enough at this to be able to dig in and find out.

• CSS3 Gradients to reproduce an 'inner glow' effect from Illustrator with border-radius applied

  Hello all! First post on here so please be kind :) I am in the process of trying to get my head properly around CSS3 Gradients (specifically radial ones) and in doing so I think I've set myself a relatively tough challenge. In Adobe Illustrator I have created a 'button' style which can be seen here: http://bit.ly/aePPtV (jpg image). To create this image I created a rectangle with a background colour of rgb(63,64,63) or #3F403F, then 'stylized' it to have a 15px border radius. I then applied an 'inner glow' to it with a 25% opacity, 8px blur, white from the center. Finally, I applied a 3pt white stroke on it. (I'm telling you all of this in case you wished to reproduce it, if the image above isn't sufficient.) So, my question is thus: is it possible to recreate this 'button' using CSS without the need for an image? I am aware of the 'limitations' of Internet Explorer (and for the sake of this experiment, I couldn't give a monkeys). I am also aware of the small 'bug' in webkit which incorrectly renders an element with a background colour, border-radius and a border (with a different color to the background-color) - it lets the background color bleed through on the curved corners. • Jboss Seam: Enabling Debug page on WebLogic 10.3.2 (11g)

  Hi all, SKIP TO UPDATE 3 I want to enable the Seam debug page on Weblogic 10.3.2 (11g). So, I have done the following: I have the jboss-seam and jboss-seam-debug jars as dependency in both my ejb and web maven projects (both are modules of my superproject) I put this context parameter in my web.xml: <context-param> <param-name>org.jboss.seam.core.init.debug</param-name> <param-value>true</param-value> </context-param> Now, when I hit the URL of my application, I get the debug page with this exception (full stacktrace at the end of the post): Caused by java.lang.IllegalStateException with message: "No phase id bound to current thread (make sure you do not have two SeamPhaseListener instances installed)" From posts I read it seems that this is somehow related to two jars of jboss-seam or jboss-seam-debug being in the classpath. I opened my ear file and only one of each is present (in the ear) whereas the war itself has no libraries in the WEB-INF/lib. I have also read of another way to initialize debug page using the components.xml. They have an outer EAR project containing the inner WAR project. They discuss that this may be related to how jars end up in the projects. I use Maven, and I had set it to create "Skinny Wars", that is excluding all jar dependencies from the inner WAR project, so that it remains small in size. All its dependencies are contained in the EAR and are used by all other modules. I changed the settings of the maven-war-plugin to leave inside the war the web-specific jars (the ones mentioned in the link, like RichFaces, jboss-seam-debug, Facelets etc). However, the problem has reverted to its previous form. I now get the debug page, whatever link I press, with the initial exception. Caused by java.lang.IllegalStateException with message: "No phase id bound to current thread (make sure you do not have two SeamPhaseListener instances installed)" UPDATE 3: The structure of the application .ear is the following: application.ear |--> APP-INF | |--> classes |--> lib (all jar dependencies go here, including the WAR dependencies, EJB module dependencies) |-->META_INF | |--> application.xml | |--> data-sources.xml | |--> MANIFEST.MF | |--> weblogic.xml | |--> weblogic-application.xml |--> jboss-seam-2.2.0.GA.jar |--> myEjbModule1.jar |--> myEjbModule2.jar |--> myEjbModule3.jar |--> myEjbModule4.jar |--> myWar.war (NO libraries in WEB-INF/lib, finds everything in EAR/lib) When deploying .ear application WITHOUT debug enabled (not including the jboss-seam-debug.jar in the ear), the application is loaded correctly. When deploying WITH jboss-seam-debug.jar in the EAR (EAR/lib directory), the application does not appear, but ONLY the debug page with the following exception (stacktrace at the end): Exception during request processing: Caused by java.lang.IllegalStateException with message: "No phase id bound to current thread (make sure you do not have two SeamPhaseListener instances installed)" When "JBoss-izing" the same EAR (remove hibernate jars, which are provided by JBoss, and move all libraries from EAR/lib to EAR root), the application loads correctly. BOTH the application AND the debug page appear correctly. • Android Packaging Problem: resources.ap_ does not exist

  I am trying to fix a problem in Eclipse for like 3 hours and I haven't made any progress. Tomorrow is the customer coming to look at my app, and I have no time left. This is really frustrating! This morning when I was coding and I wanted to run my app on my device Eclipse crashed all of a sudden. 'aapt.exe has stopped working' After this Eclipse wasn't starting anymore. It froze at the splash image. I looked on the internet and tried different solutions like going back to Java SE 6 update 20, changing .ini file etc. in the end reinstalling Eclipse did the job. Shortly after that the 'aapt.exe has stopped working' returned. I found a solution by changing my projects target. 1.5, 1.6, 2.2 doesn't matter, as long as it's different than the one before. Now I get the Error generating final archive: java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\xxx\bin\resources.ap_ does not exist error. I tried clean but that doesn't work. Deleting and automatically regenarting R.java also didn't work. I ran the same code in Netbeans with the Android plugin and there it gives me the 'aapt.exe has stopped working' again :( Please guys, how can I fix this? Edit: I think I may have found the reason. • Qt vs .NET - plz no n00bs who don't know wtf they're talking about [closed]

  Man in all these Qt vs. .NET discussions 90% these people don't know WTF they're talking about. Trying to get a real comparison chart going before we embark on a major fucking project. And yes I'm drunk, and yes I use cocaine. Event Handling In Qt the event handling system you just emit signals when something cool happens and then catch them in slots, for instance emit valueChanged(int percent, bool something); and void MyCatcherObj::valueChanged(int p, bool ok){} blocking them and disconnecting them when needed, doing it across threads... once you get the hang of it, it just seems a lot more natural and intuitive than the way the .NET event handling is set up (you know, object sender, CustomEventArgs e). And I'm not just talking about syntax, because in the end the .NET delegate crap is the bomb. I'm also talking about in more than just reflection (because, yes, .NET obviously has much stronger reflection capabilities). I'm talking about in the way the system feels to a human being. Qt wins hands down i m o. Basically, the footprints make more sense and you can visualize the project easier without the clunky event handling system. I wish I could it explain it better. The only thing is, I do love some of the ease of C# compared to C++ and .NET's assembly architecture. That is a big bonus for modular projects, which are a PITA to do in C++. Database Ease of Doing Crap Also what about datasets and database manipulations. I think .net wins here but I'm not sure. Threading/Conccurency How do you guys think of the threading? In .NET, all I've ever done is make like a list of master worker threads with locks. I like QConcurrentFramework, you don't worry about locks or anything, and with the ease of the signal slot system across threads it's nice to get notified about the progress of things. Memory Usage Also what do you think of the overall memory usage comparison. Is the .NET garbage collector pretty on the ball and quick compared to the instantaneous nature of native memory management? Or does it just let programs leak up a storm and lag the computer then clean it up when it's about to really lag? However, I am a n00b who doesn't know what I'm talking about, please school me on the subject.

  So I'm going to add my query to the small ocean of questions on the subject. I'm trying to enable GZip compression on large soap responses from a WCF service. So far, I've followed instructions here and in a variety of other places to enable dynamic compression on IIS. Here's my dynamicTypes section from the applicationHost.config: <dynamicTypes> <add mimeType="text/*" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="message/*" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="application/x-javascript" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="application/atom+xml" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="application/xaml+xml" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="application/xop+xml" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="application/soap+xml" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="*/*" enabled="false" /> </dynamicTypes> And also: <urlCompression doDynamicCompression="true" dynamicCompressionBeforeCache="true" /> Though I'm not so clear on why that's needed. Threw some extra mime-types in there just in case. I've implemented IClientMessageInspector to add Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate to my client's HttpRequests. Here's an example of a request-header taken from fiddler: POST http://[omitted]/TestMtomService/TextService.svc HTTP/1.1 Content-Type: application/soap+xml; charset=utf-8 Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Host: [omitted] Content-Length: 542 Expect: 100-continue Now, this doesn't work. There's simply no compression happening, no matter what the size of the message (tried up to 1.5Mb). I've looked at this post, but have not run into an exception as he describes, so I haven't tried the CodeProject implementation that he proposes. Also I've seen a lot of other implementations that are supposed to get this to work, but cannot make sense of them (e.g., msdn's GZip encoder). Why would I need to implement the encoder, or the code-project solution? Shouldn't IIS take care of the compression? So what else do I need to do to get this to work? Joni

  Hi guys, Sorry, I know this is a very lame question to ask and not of any use to anyone else. I have an assignment in UML due tomorrow and I don't even know the basics (all-nighter ahead!). I'm not looking for a walkthrough, I simply want your opinion on something. The assignment is as follows (you only need to skim over it!): ============= Gourmet Surprise (GS) is a small catering firm with five employees. During a typical weekend, GS caters fifteen events with twenty to fifty people each. The business has grown rapidly over the past year and the owner wants to install a new computer system for managing the ordering and buying process. GS has a set of ten standard menus. When potential customers call, the receptionist describes the menus to them. If the customer decides to book an event (dinner, lunch, picnic, finger food etc.), the receptionist records the customer information (e.g., name, address, phone number, etc.) and the information about the event (e.g., place, date, time, which one of the standard menus, total price) on a contract. The customer is then faxed a copy of the contract and must sign and return it along with a deposit (often a credit card or by check) before the event is officially booked. The remaining money is collected when the catering is delivered. Sometimes, the customer wants something special (e.g., birthday cake). In this case, the receptionist takes the information and gives it to the owner who determines the cost; the receptionist then calls the customer back with the price information. Sometimes the customer accepts the price, other times, the customer requests some changes that have to go back to the owner for a new cost estimate. Each week, the owner looks through the events scheduled for that weekend and orders the supplies (e.g., plates) and food (e.g., bread, chicken) needed to make them. The owner would like to use the system for marketing as well. It should be able to track how customers learned about GS, and identify repeat customers, so that GS can mail special offers to them. The owner also wants to track the events on which GS sent a contract, but the customer never signed the contract and actually booked a GS. Exercise: Create an activity diagram and a use case model (complete with a set of detail use case descriptions) for the above system. Produce an initial domain model (class diagram) based on these descriptions. Elaborate the use cases into sequence diagrams, and include any state diagrams necessary. Finally use the information from these dynamic models to expand the domain model into a full application model. ============= In your opinion, do you think this question is asking me to come up with a package for an online ordering system to replace the system described above, or to create UML diagrams that facilitate the existing telephone-based system?

• Why is drawing to OnPaint graphics faster than image graphics?

  I'm looking for a way to speed up the drawing of my game engine, which is currently the significant bottleneck, and is causing slowdowns. I'm on the verge of converting it over to XNA, but I just noticed something. Say I have a small image that I've loaded. Image img = Image.FromFile("mypict.png"); We have a picturebox on the screen we want to draw on. So we have a handler. pictureBox1.Paint += new PaintEventHandler(pictureBox1_Paint); I want our loaded image to be tiled on the picturebox (this is for a game, after all). Why on earth is this code: void pictureBox1_Paint(object sender, PaintEventArgs e) { for (int y = 0; y < 16; y++) for (int x = 0; x < 16; x++) e.Graphics.DrawImage(image, x * 16, y * 16, 16, 16); } over 25 TIMES FASTER than this code: Image buff = new Bitmap(256, 256, PixelFormat.Format32bppPArgb); // actually a form member void pictureBox1_Paint(object sender, PaintEventArgs e) { using (Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(buff)) { for (int y = 0; y < 16; y++) for (int x = 0; x < 16; x++) g.DrawImage(image, x * 16, y * 16, 16, 16); } e.Graphics.DrawImage(buff, 0, 0, 256, 256); } To eliminate the obvious, I've tried commenting out the last e.Graphics.DrawImage (which means I don't see anything, but it gets rid a call that isn't in the first example). I've also left in the using block (needlessly) in the first example, but it's still just as blazingly fast. I've set properties of g to match e.Graphics - things like InterpolationMode, CompositingQuality, etc, but nothing I do bridges this incredible gap in performance. I can't find any difference between the two Graphics objects. What gives? My test with a System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch says that the first code snippet runs at about 7100 fps, while the second runs at a measly 280 fps. My reference image is VS2010ImageLibrary\Objects\png_format\WinVista\SecurityLock.png, which is 48x48 px, and which I modified to be 72 dpi instead of 96, but those made no difference either.

  I have migrated a VS2008 ASP.NET MVC solution to VS2010/MVC2/.NET 4.0 The solution builds locally and all unit tests pass. Our TFS server is still TFS2008 and I am having problems getting the CI build to pass. The projects all build successfully, the unit tests all run and pass but the Running Tests item fails. • Eventlet or gevent or Stackless + Twisted, Pylons, Django and SQL Alchemy

  We're using Twisted extensively for apps requiring a great deal of asynchronous io. There are some cases where stuff is cpu bound instead and for that we spawn a pool of processes to do the work and have a system for managing these across multiple servers as well - all done in Twisted. Works great. The problem is that it's hard to bring new team members up to speed. Writing asynchronous code in Twisted requires a near vertical learning curve. It's as if humans just don't think that way naturally. We're considering a mixed approach perhaps. Maybe do the xmlrpc server part and process management in Twisted still but the other stuff in code that at least looks synchronous while not being as such. Then again I like explicit over implicit so hmmm. Anyway onto greenlets - how well does that stuff work? So there's Stackless and as you can see from my Gallentean avatar I'm well aware of the tremendous success in it's use for CCP's flagship EVE Online game first hand. What about Eventlet or gevent? Well for now only Eventlet works with Twisted. However gevent claims to be faster since it's not a pure python implementation it instead uses libevent. It also has fewer idiosyncrasies and defects supposedly. The documentation there is minimal in comparison to Eventlet and it's maintained by 1 guy as far as I can tell. This makes me leery but all great projects start this way so... Then there's PyPy - I haven't even finished reading about that one yet - just saw it in this thread: Drawbacks of Stackless. So confusing - I'm wondering what the heck to do - sounds like Eventlet is probably the best bet but is it really stable enough? Anyone out there have any experience with it? Should we go with Stackless instead as it's been around and is proven technology - just like Twisted is as well - and they do work together nicely. But still I hate having to have a separate version of Python to do this. what to do.... This somewhat obnoxious blog entry hit the nail on the head for me though: Asynchronous IO for Grownups We're stuck using MySQL as well - I never knew how great PostgreSQL was until having had to work on a production OLTP system in MySQL instead - but that's another story. But if that monkey patch thing really works then wow. Just wow.

• Java ReentrantReadWriteLocks - how to safely acquire write lock?

  I am using in my code at the moment a ReentrantReadWriteLock to synchronize access over a tree-like structure. This structure is large, and read by many threads at once with occasional modifications to small parts of it - so it seems to fit the read-write idiom well. I understand that with this particular class, one cannot elevate a read lock to a write lock, so as per the Javadocs one must release the read lock before obtaining the write lock. I've used this pattern successfully in non-reentrant contexts before. What I'm finding however is that I cannot reliably acquire the write lock without blocking forever. Since the read lock is reentrant and I am actually using it as such, the simple code lock.getReadLock().unlock(); lock.getWriteLock().lock() can block if I have acquired the readlock reentrantly. Each call to unlock just reduces the hold count, and the lock is only actually released when the hold count hits zero. EDIT to clarify this, as I don't think I explained it too well initially - I am aware that there is no built-in lock escalation in this class, and that I have to simply release the read lock and obtain the write lock. My problem is/was that regardless of what other threads are doing, calling getReadLock().unlock() may not actually release this thread's hold on the lock if it acquired it reentrantly, in which case the call to getWriteLock().lock() will block forever as this thread still has a hold on the read lock and thus blocks itself. For example, this code snippet will never reach the println statement, even when run singlethreaded with no other threads accessing the lock: final ReadWriteLock lock = new ReentrantReadWriteLock(); lock.getReadLock().lock(); // In real code we would go call other methods that end up calling back and // thus locking again lock.getReadLock().lock(); // Now we do some stuff and realise we need to write so try to escalate the // lock as per the Javadocs and the above description lock.getReadLock().unlock(); // Does not actually release the lock lock.getWriteLock().lock(); // Blocks as some thread (this one!) holds read lock System.out.println("Will never get here"); So I ask, is there a nice idiom to handle this situation? Specifically, when a thread that holds a read lock (possibly reentrantly) discovers that it needs to do some writing, and thus wants to "suspend" its own read lock in order to pick up the write lock (blocking as required on other threads to release their holds on the read lock), and then "pick up" its hold on the read lock in the same state afterwards? Since this ReadWriteLock implementation was specifically designed to be reentrant, surely there is some sensible way to elevate a read lock to a write lock when the locks may be acquired reentrantly? This is the critical part that means the naive approach does not work.

• C++ vs Matlab vs Python as a main language for Computer Vision Postgraduate

  Hi all, Firstly, sorry for a somewhat long question but I think that many people are in the same situation as me and hopefully they can also gain some benefit from this. I'll be starting my PhD very soon which involve the fields of computer vision, pattern recognition and machine learning. Currently, I'm using opencv (2.1) C++ interface and I especially like its powerful Mat class and the overloaded operations available for matrix and image seamless operations and transformations. I've also tried (and implemented many small vision projects) using opencv python interface (new bindings; opencv 2.1) and I really enjoy python's ability to integrate opencv, numpy, scipy and matplotlib. But recently, I went back to opencv C++ interface because I felt that the official python new bindings were not stable enough and no overloaded operations are available for matrices and images, not to mention the lack of machine learning modules and slow speeds in certain operations. I've also used Matlab extensively in the past and although I've used mex files and other means to speed up the program, I just felt that Matlab's performance was inadequate for real-time vision tasks, be it for fast prototyping or not. When the project becomes larger and larger, many tasks have to be re-written in C and compiled into Mex files increasingly and Matlab becomes nothing more than a glue language. Here comes the sub-questions: For postgrad studies in these fields (machine learning, vision, pattern recognition), what is your main or ideal programming language for rapid prototyping of ideas and testing algorithms contained in papers? For postgrad studies, can you list down the pros and cons of using the following languages? C++ (with opencv + gsl + svmlib + other libraries) vs Matlab (with all its toolboxes) vs python (with the imcomplete opencv bindings + numpy + scipy + matplotlib). Are there computer vision PhD/postgrad students here who are using only C++ (with all its availabe libraries including opencv) without even needing to resort to Matlab or python? In other words, given the current existing computer vision or machine learning libraries, is C++ alone sufficient for fast prototyping of ideas? If you're currently using Java or C# for your postgrad work, can you list down the reasons why they should be used and how they compare to other languages in terms of available libraries? What is the de facto vision/machine learning programming language and its associated libraries used in your university research group? Thanks in advance.

• 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get' error using SQLAlchemy

  I've been trying to map an object to a database using SQLAlchemy but have run into a snag. Version info if handy: [OS: Mac OSX 10.5.8 | Python: 2.6.4 | SQLAlchemy: 0.5.8] The class I'm going to map: class Student(object): def __init__(self, name, id): self.id = id self.name = name self.preferences = collections.defaultdict(set) self.allocated_project = None self.allocated_rank = 0 def __repr__(self): return str(self) def __str__(self): return "%s %s" %(self.id, self.name) Background: Now, I've got a function that reads in the necessary information from a text database into these objects. The function more or less works and I can easily access the information from the objects. Before the SQLAlchemy code runs, the function will read in the necessary info and store it into the Class. There is a dictionary called students which stores this as such: students = {} students[id] = Student(<all the info from the various "reader" functions>) Afterwards, there is an "allocation" algorithm that will allocate projects to student. It does that well enough. The allocated_project remains as None if a student is unsuccessful in getting a project. SQLAlchemy bit: So after all this happens, I'd like to map my object to a database table. Using the documentation, I've used the following code to only map certain bits. • WebClient error when using a thread in .NET

  I'm having a very weird error using the WebClient class in .NET 4. The app simply downloads some files off the internet and provides output on a textbox (the GUI is WPF). The method that does this is the following: void DownloadFiles(object files) { fileL = (List<string>) files; foreach (string url in fileL) { byte[] data; using (System.Net.WebClient k = new WebClient()) { data = k.DownloadData(url); } //Bunch of irrelevant code goes here... } } (I added the using while trying to divine [yes I'm that desperate/ignorant] a solution, the problem happens even if the webclient is declared and initialized outside the foreach loop) Now the problem appears only when I'm executing this method on a thread separate from the WPF UI main thread. If it is executed on the UI thread then it works perfectly. When a new thread is created with: Thread t = new Thread(DownloadFiles); t.Start(files); The first time the code goes into the loop it will work, but when its the second pass inside the loop, I will always receive a TargetParameterCountException. • Best programming aids for a quadriplegic programmer

  Before you jump to conclusions, yes, this is programming related. It covers a situation that comes under the heading of, "There, but for the grace of God, go you or I." This is brand new territory for me so I'm asking for some serious help here. A young man, Honza Ripa, in a nearby town did the classic Dumb Thing two weeks after graduating from High School -- he dove into shallow water in the Russian River and had a C-4/C-5 break, sometimes called a Swimming Pool break. In a matter of seconds he went from an exceptional golfer and wrestler to a quadriplegic. (Read the story ... all of us should have been so lucky as to have a girlfriend like Brianna.) That was 10 months ago and he has regained only tiny amounts of control of his right index finger and a couple of other hand/foot motions, none of them fine-grained. His total control of his computer (currently running Win7, but we can change that as needed) is via voice command. Honza's not dumb. He had a 3.7 GPA with AP math and physics. The Problems: Since all of his input is via voice command, he is concerned that the predominance of special characters in programming will require vast amount of verbose commands. Does anyone know of any well done voice input system specifically designed for programmers? I'm thinking about something that might be modal--e.g. you say "Python input" and it goes into a macro mode for doing class definitions, etc. Given all of the RSI in programmer-land there's got to be something out there. What OS(es) does it run on? I am planning on teaching him Python, which is my preferred language for programming and teaching. Are there any applications / whatevers that are written in Python and would be a particularly good match for engaging him mentally while supporting his disability? One of his expressed interests is in stock investing, but that not might be a good starting point for a brand-new programmer. There are a lot of environments (Flash, JavaScript, etc) that are not particularly friendly to people with accessibility challenges. I vaguely remember (but cannot find) a research project that basically created an overlay system on top of a screen environment and then allowed macro command construction on top of the screen image. If we can get/train this system, we may be able to remove many hurdles to using the net. I am particularly interested in finding open source Python-based robotics and robotic prostheses projects so that he can simultaneously learn advanced programming concepts while learning to solve some of his own immediate problems. I've done a ton of googling on this, but I know there things I'm missing. I'm asking the SO community to step up to the plate here. I know this group has the answers, so let me hear them! Overwhelm me with the opportunities that any of us might have/need to still program after such a life-changing event.

• Specifying Android project dependencies (in Eclipse)

  I have two Android projects, a 'library project' containing a custom layout, and an 'application project' containing an application which uses the layout. Everything seems to build and execute fine, except that the visual layout editor throws a ClassNotFoundException (which I assume is a bug in the plug-in), but when I try to start to make use of the attributes I defined for the custom layout in the xml, I can no longer build. The layout_horizontalSpacing attribute (and layout_verticalSpacing) is a custom attribute used in the PredicateLayout.LayoutParam class to specify the distance to the next widget. So far I've tried the standard eclipse ways by specifying project references and build path project dependencies. I was also told to try the tag in the application manifest, which did not help. So, what do I need to do for the references in the xml-file to work?   We all know that Mathematica is great, but it also often lacks critical functionality. What kind of external packages / tools / resources do you use with Mathematica? I'll edit (and invite anyone else to do so too) this main post to include resources which are focused on general applicability in scientific research and which as many people as possible will find useful. Feel free to contribute anything, even small code snippets (as I did below for a timing routine). Also, undocumented and useful features in Mathematica 7 and beyond you found yourself, or dug up from some paper/site are most welcome. I am creating a DataGenerationPlan to insert data into a simple table, in which one of the column datatypes is XML. • Reading a POP3 server with only TcpClient and StreamWriter/StreamReader[SOLVED]

  I'm trying to read mails from my live.com account, via the POP3 protocol. I've found the the server is pop3.live.com and the port if 995. I'm not planning on using a pre-made library, I'm using NetworkStream and StreamReader/StreamWriter for the job. I need to figure this out. So, any of the answers given here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/44383/reading-email-using-pop3-in-c are not usefull. It's part of a larger program, but I made a small test to see if it works. Eitherway, i'm not getting anything. Here's the code I'm using, which I think should be correct.   Hello, Probably I'm doing something wrong but here it goes: I'm trying to create a database using subsonic.migrations in an OracleXE version 10.2.0.1.0. I have ODP v 10.2.0.2.20 installed. Thanks a lot for any help :) Andre Carlucci UPDATE: As pointed by Anton, the problem is the subsonic OracleSqlGenerator. It is trying to create the schema table using this sql: CREATE TABLE SubSonicSchemaInfo ( version int NOT NULL CONSTRAINT DF_SubSonicSchemaInfo_version DEFAULT (0) ) Which doesn't work on oracle. The correct sql would be: CREATE TABLE SubSonicSchemaInfo ( version int DEFAULT (0), constraint DF_SubSonicSchemaInfo_version primary key (version) ) The funny thing is that since this is the very first sql executed by subsonic migrations, NOBODY EVER TESTED it on oracle.

• Can't see why JavaMail doesn't work in a Spring MVC application on Tomcat

  I have wrote a small web application using Spring MVC. It runs on tomcat and use the JavaMail library. At the present time I can't find why the mails are not sent. But I have no pertinent log messages in tomcat log files to find where is the problem. At the present time, my logging is configured in a log4j.properties file in the root of my CLASSPATH: log4j.rootLogger= DEBUG, CONSOLE log4j.appender.CONSOLE=org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender log4j.appender.CONSOLE.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.CONSOLE.layout.ConversionPattern=%-4r [%t] %-5p %c %x - %m%n How can i see the java mail log message in debug mode ? I think it is related to JDK logging system (as I'm using Sun's JavaMail) but I don't know how to configure it. Edit: Well, one problem solves and another arises. • SSLException: Keystore does not support enabled cipher suites

  I want to implement a small android application, that works as SSL Server. After lot of problems with the right format of the keystore, I solved this and run into the next one. My keystore file is properly loaded by the KeyStore class. But when I try to open the server socket (socket.accept()) the following error is raised: javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Could not find any key store entries to support the enabled cipher suites. I generated my keystore with this command: keytool -genkey -keystore test.keystore -keyalg RSA -keypass ssltest -storepass ssltest -storetype BKS -provider org.bouncycastle.jce.provider.BouncyCastleProvider -providerpath bcprov.jar with the Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy for Java SE6 applied to my jre6. I got a list of supported ciphers suites by calling socket.getSupportedCipherSuites() that prints a long list with very different combinations. But I don't know how to get a supported key. I also tried the android debug keystore after converting it to BKS format using portecle but get still the same error. Can anyone help and tell how I can generate a key that is compatible with one of the cipher suites?
