• An annoying printing issue with Crystal Reports 2008

  A little background: I have an extremely annoying printing issue with crystal reports. My environment is crystal reports 2008 SP2 on Windows 7 (64bit), Visual studio 2008 and .net framework 3.5 with all the latest updates for everything. The report is designed basically to render a small shelf label of the size (40mm width and 20mm height). In crystal when I set the page size to the above mentioned values and set orientation to portrait and take a preview, everything is displayed as i expect it to be and issuing a print command, it prints absolutely correct. The problem: The problem comes when i print this report from my program (in vb.net), dynamically setting data to some text fields, the result is that crystal somehow changes the print orientation, NOT the paper orientation as in portrait or landscape. Instead of printing from top left towards the bottom right, it rotates the whole output at 90 degrees to the left and reduces everything so small that it is barely visible, although it prints everything out. I have tested it on Intermec PF8t and Zebra GK420d label printers and a whole bunch of laser printers, but with the above stated page settings the output is always the same. Another strange thing that i noticed while experimenting with page sizes if i switch to landscape mode, the print out is correct in its font sizes and positions but then the text gets truncated due to overflowing the page size. Can anyone help me with this. Does crystal has anything like its own print drivers or something. I have tried to ensure to the best of my abilities that it is not a printer driver problem.

• Debugging a release only flash problem

  I've got an Adobe Flash 10 program that freezes in certain cases, however only when running under a release version of the flash player. With the debug version, the application works fine. What are the best approaches to debugging such issues? I considered installing the release player on my computer and trying to set some kind of non-graphical method of output up (I guess there's some way to write a log file or similar?), however I see no way to have both the release and debug versions installed anyway :( . EDIT: Ok I managed to replace my version of flash player with the release version, and no freeze...so what I know so far is: Flash: Debug Release Vista 32: works works XP PRO 32: works* freeze I gave them the debug players I had to test this Hmm, seeming less and less like an error in my code and more like a bug in the player (10.0.45.2 in all cases)... At the very least id like to see the callstack at the point it freezes. Is there some way to do that without requiring them to install various bits and pieces, e.g. by letting flash write out a log.txt or something with a "trace" like function I can insert in the code in question? EDIT2: I just gave the swf to another person with XP 32bit, same results :(

• Using Groovy as a scripting language...

  I prefer to use scripting languages for short tasks, anything such as a really simple http bot, bulk importing/exporting data to/from somewhere, etc etc... Basic throw-away scripts and simple stuff. The point being, that a scripting language is just an efficient tool to write quick programs with. As for my understanding of Groovy at this point... If you were to program in Groovy, and you wan't to write a quick script, wouldn't you be forced to going back to regular java syntax (and we know how that can be convoluted compared to a scripting language) in order to do anything more complicated? For example, if I want to do some http scripting, wouldn't I just be right back at using java syntax to invoke Commons HttpClient? To me, the point of a scripting language is for quickly typed and less forced constructs. And here is another thing, it doesn't seem that there is any incentive for groovy based libraries to be developed when there are already so many good java one's out there, thus making groovy appear to be a Java dependent language with minor scripting features. So right now I am wondering if I could switch to Groovy as a scripting language or continue to use a more common scripting language such as Perl, Python or Ruby.

• C++ help with getline function with ifstream

  So I am writing a program that deals with reading in and writing out to a file. I use the getline() function because some of the lines in the text file may contain multiple elements. I've never had a problem with getline until now. Here's what I got. • Unknown Exception on trying to initialize the web service stub created by Axis C++

  Hi, I am trying out the sample calculator program given in the folder of axis c++. I am mainly interested in the client side. So I used the wsdl to create the stubs and my main is pretty much the same as given in the sample. However on executing the call Calculator ws (endpoint) I get an unknown exception "First-chance exception at 0x7c0024b9 in CalculatorClient.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000. First-chance exception at 0x7c812afb in CalculatorClient.exe: Microsoft C++ exception: [rethrow] at memory location 0x00000000.. Unhandled exception at 0x7c0024b9 in CalculatorClient.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000." and the exception causing code is Calculator::Calculator(const char* pchEndpointUri, AXIS_PROTOCOL_TYPE eProtocol) :Stub(pchEndpointUri, eProtocol) { } I had earlier tried to run a a webservice using Axis C++ but had received the same error. At that time my web service was a java ws on WAS. Then I later tried the calculator client (but this time I did not have any server hosting the ws as I just wanted to check if the Client could initialize). Is the problem caused due to the web service not being hosted on Apache in C++ (though I highly doubt it). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Harsha

• Decrypting a string in C# which was encrypted with openssl in php 5.3.2

  maybe someone can clear me up. I have been surfing on this a while now. I used openssl from console to create a root certificate for me (privatekey.pem, publickey.pem, mycert.pem, mycertprivatekey.pfx). See the end of this text on how. The problem is still to get a string encrypted on the PHP side to be decrypted on the C# side with RSACryptoServiceProvider. Any ideas? PHP side I used the publickey.pem to read it into php: $server_public_key = openssl_pkey_get_public(file_get_contents("C:\publickey.pem")); // rsa encrypt openssl_public_encrypt("123", $encrypted, $server_public_key); and the privatekey.pem to check if it works: openssl_private_decrypt($encrypted, $decrypted, openssl_get_privatekey(file_get_contents("C:\privatekey.pem"))); Coming to the conclusion, that encryption/decryption works fine on the php side with these openssl root certificate files. • Java3D: Problem with order of objects that have a transparent PNG texture

  Hello! Today I tried to program a little fish tank with Java 3D. The fish tank rotates and fishes are placed in it. The fishes in the box are Java 3D Boxes with a PNG picture that has an alpha channel. Without activated transparency the order of the objects is correct. But when I enable it, some fishes in the back come to the front what looks really wrong. I tried NICEST, FASTEST and BLENDED as Transparency Options but I had no effort. Does someone know what the problem could be? • Java/BlackBerry build error overriding too many classes

  Hey everyone, Has anyone ever heard of overriding too many classes in Java? Perhaps this issue is just related to BlackBerry development, but I was wondering if it is an issue in Java, too. However, I've noticed that by overriding the paint() method multiple times in many different classes throughout my project, I receive the error: I/O Error: Cannot run program "jar": CreateProcess error=2, The system cannot find the file specified My only solution thus far is to clean up my GUI code...minimize it and reuse it. Perhaps its good that this happened so I can be less careless about creating GUI code all over my classes. Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone has heard of this before. Anyways, I would like to provide a function to set the framerate(and thus the time interval of the timer) to a specific value at runtime. • What programming languages do the top tier Universities teach?

  I'm constantly being inundated with articles and people talking about how most of today's Universities are nothing more than Java vocational schools churning out mediocre programmer after mediocre programmer. Our very own Joel Spolsky has his famous article, "The Perils of Java Schools." Similarly, Alan Kay, a famous Computer Scientist (and SO member) has said this in the past: "I fear — as far as I can tell — that most undergraduate degrees in computer science these days are basically Java vocational training." - Alan Kay (link) If the languages being taught by the schools are considered such a contributing factor to the quality of the school's program then I'm curious what languages do the "top-tier" computer science schools teach (MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, etc)? If the average school is performing so poorly due in large part the languages (or lack of) that they teach then what languages do the supposed "good" cs programs teach that differentiate them? If you can, provide the name of the school you attended, followed by a list of the languages they use throughout their coursework. Edit: Shog-9 asks why I don't get this information directly from the schools websites themselves. I would, but many schools websites don't discuss the languages they use in their class descriptions. Quite a few will say, "using high-level languages we will...", without elaborating on which languages they use. So, we should be able to get a pretty accurate list of languages taught at various well known institutions from the various SO members who have attended at them.

• wxWidgets EVT_KILL_FOCUS

  Q1:I am using wxWidgets (C++) and have come accost a problem that i can not locate any help. I have created several wxTextCtrl boxes and would like the program to update the simple calculations in them when the user 'kills the focus.' I could not find any documentation on this subject on the wxWidgets webpage and Googling it only brought up wxPython. The two events i have found are: EVT_COMMAND_KILL_FOCUS - EVT_KILL_FOCUS for neither of which I could find any snippet for. Could anyone give me a short example or lead me to a page that would be helpful? Q2:Would i have to create an event to handle the focus being killed for each of my 8 wxTextCtrl boxes? In the case that i have to create a different event: How would i get each event to differentiate from each other?   Hi, I've run into codility.com new cool service after listening to one of the recent stackoverflow.com podcasts. In short, it presents the user with a programming riddle to solve, within a given time frame. The user writes code in an online editor, and has the ability to run the program and view the standard output. After final submission, the user sees its final score and which tests failed him. Quoting Joel Spolsky: You are given a programming problem, you can do it in Java, C++, C#, C, Pascal, Python and PHP, which is pretty cool, and you have 30 minutes. And it gives you an editor in a webpage. And you've got to just start typing your code. And it's going to time you, basically you have to do it in a certain amount of time. And it actually runs your code and determines the performance characteristics of your code. It is intended for job interview screenings, but the idea seems very cool for code-golfs and for practicing new languages. Do you know if there's any proper open replacement? Adam

• MonoDevelop 2.8.2: Build failed. Illegal characters in path

  I have just installed MonoDevelop 2.8.2. After opening a new solution named test I attempted to run the project. I push f5 and all I see is a "Build failed. Illegal characters in path" error in the bottom left. I open up the Error List and see no errors. I have done some searching and only find solutions pertaining to projects that are beyond the scope of just the pre-generated code. This is the code: using System; namespace Test { class MainClass { public static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Hello World!"); } } } I have tried to uninstall/reinstall, cut out any spaces in the path to the program or the solution, and even opened VS2010 and just copy pasted that code over. I've looked over my options under tools, solution options under project, and the project's options. I am running MD 2.8.2 with GTK# and Microsoft's .NET runtime. The quickest and easiest way to do this is by defining a new language using the program options. In order to have Swine support available every time I start ctags, I will place the following lines into the file $HOME/.ctags, which is read in every time ctags starts: --langdef=swine --langmap=swine:.swn --regex-swine=/^def[ \t]*([a-zA-Z0-9_]+)/\1/d,definition/ The first line defines the new language, the second maps a file extension to it, and the third defines a regular expression to identify a language definition and generate a tag file entry for it. • Rendering LaTeX on third-party websites

  There are some sites on the web that render LaTeX into some more readable form, such as Wikipedia, some Wordpress blogs, and MathOverflow. They may use images, MathML, jsMath, or something like that. There are other sites on the web where LaTeX appears inline and is not rendered, such as the arXiv, various math forums, or my email. In fact, it is quite common to see an arXiv paper's abstract with raw LaTeX in it, e.g. this paper. Is there a plugin available for Firefox, or would it be possible to write one, that renders LaTeX within pages that do not provide a rendering mechanism themselves? Some notes: It may be impossible to render some of the code, because authors often copy-paste code directly from their source TeX files, which may contain things like "\cite{foo}" or undefined commands. These should be left alone. This question is a repost of a question from MathOverflow that was closed for not being related to math. I program a lot, but Javascript is not my specialty, so comments along the lines of "look at this library" are not particularly helpful to me (but may be to others).

  Yes, from searching I can see this has been asked time and time again. Here's a backstory. I'm an individual hobbyist developer with zero budget. A program I've been developing has been in need of constant bugfixes, and me and users are getting tired of having to manually update. Me, because my current solution of Manually FTP to my website Update a file "newest.txt" with the newest version Update index.html with a link to the newest version Hope for people to see the "there's an update" message Have them manually download the update sucks, and whenever I screw up an update, I get pitchforks. Users, because, well, "Are you ever going to implement auto-update?" "Will there ever be an auto-update feature?" Over the past I have looked into: WinSparkle - No in-app updates, and the DLL is 500 KB. My current solution is a few KBs in the executable and has no in-app updates. http://windowsclient.net/articles/appupdater.aspx - I can't comprehend the documentation http://www.codeproject.com/KB/vb/Auto_Update_Revisited.aspx - Doesn't appear to support anything other than working with files that aren't in use wyUpdate - wyBuild isn't free, and the file specification is simply too complex. ClickOnce - Workarounds for implementing launching on startup are massive, horrendous and not worth it for such a simple feature. And then I think about Sparkle... EDIT: I came across SparkleDotNET just then. Looks good, though the DLL is 200 KB. Don't know if that's really that big of an issue, though.

I converted it to use a Stack and renamed the class as needed. For performance I removed locking in Push, since my producer code is single threaded. My problem is how can thread working on the (now) thread safe Stack know when it is empty. Even if I add another thread safe wrapper around Count that locks on the underlying collection like Push and Pop do, I still run into the race condition that access Count and then Pop are not atomic. Possible solutions as I see them (which is preferred and am I missing any that would work better?): Consumer threads catch the InvalidOperationException thrown by Pop(). Pop() return a nullptr when _stack-Count == 0, however C++-CLI does not have the default() operator ala C#. Pop() returns a boolean and uses an output parameter to return the popped element. • Can NSCollectionView autoresize the width of its subviews to display one column

  Hi, I have an NSCollectionView that contains a collection of CustomViews. Initially it tiled the subviews into columns and rows like a grid. I then set the Columns property in IB to 1, so now it just displays them one after another in rows. However, even though my CustomView is 400px wide, it's set to autoresize, the NSCollectionView is 400px wide, and it's set to 1 column, the subviews are drawn about 80px wide. I know I can get around this by calling: CGFloat width = [collectionView bounds].size.width; NSSize size = NSMakeSize(width, 85); [collectionView setMinItemSize:size]; [collectionView setMaxItemSize:size]; But putting this code in the awakeFromNib method of my WindowController only sets the correct width when the program launches. When I resize the window (and the NSCollectionView autoresizes as I've specified), the CustomViews stay at their initially set width. I'm happy to take care of resizing the subviews myself if need be, but I'm quite new to Cocoa and can't seem to find any articles explaining how to do such a thing. Can someone point me in the right direction? Anthony

• Checking for Repeated Strings in 2d list

  i have a program where i have a list of names and classes. i have the list in alphabetical order. now im trying to check if names repeat, add the classes to one single name. im trying to write some code like go through names if name is already in list, add the class to the one name. so an example would be, instead of having 'Anita ','phys 1443', and 'Anita','IE 3312' i would just have 'Anita','PHYS 1443','IE 3312'. • Monotouch or Titanium for rapid application development on IPhone?

  As a .Net developer I always dreamed for the possibility to develop with my existing skills (c#) applications for the Iphone. Both programs require a Mac and the Iphone Sdk installed. Appcelerator Titanium was the first app I tried and it is based on exposing some Iphone native api to javascript so that they can be called using that language. Monotouch starts at $399 for beeing able to deploy on the Iphone and not on the Iphone simulator while Titanium is free. Monotouch (Monodevelop) has an Ide that is currently missing in Titanium (but you can use any editor like Textmate, Aptana...) I think both program generate at the end a native precompiled app (also if I am not sure about the size of the final app on the Iphone as I think the .Net framework calls are prelilnked at compilation time in Monotouch). I am also not sure about the full coverage of all the Iphone api and features. Titanium has also the advantage to enable Android app development but as a c# developer I still find Monotouch experience more like the Visual Studio one. Witch one would you choose and what are your experiences on Monotouch and Titanium?

• Weird switch behavior in .NET 4

  I have a problem understanding what's causes the compilation error in the code below: static class Program { static void Main() { dynamic x = ""; var test = foo(x); if (test == "test") { Console.WriteLine(test); } switch (test) { case "test": Console.WriteLine(test); break; } } private static string foo(object item) { return "bar"; } } The error I get is in switch (test) line: A switch expression or case label must be a bool, char, string, integral, enum, or corresponding nullable type. Intellisence shows me that foo operation will be resolved on runtime, which is fine because I'm using a dynamic type as a param. However I don't understand how if condition compiles fine when switch doesn't. Code above is just simplified version of what I have in my application (VSTO) which appeared after migrating the app from VSTO3 to VSTO4 when one method in VSTO was changed to return dynamic type values instead of object. Can anyone give me an explanation what's the problem. I know how to resolve it but I'd like to understand what's happening.
