  • Total newb having SSH tunnel and remote MySQL access problems

    I don't often work with linux or need to SSH tunnel into remote MySQL databases, so pardon my ignorance. I'm using Windows 7 and am needing to connect to a remote MySQL instance on a Linux server. For months I had been using the HeidiSQL client application successfully. Today two things happened: the DB moved to a new server and I updated HeidiSQL, now I cannot log in to the MySQL server, when attempting I get this message from Heidi: SQL Error (2003) in statement #0: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061) If I use Putty, I can connect to the server and get MySQL access through command line, including fetching data from the DB. I assume this means my credentials and address are correct, but do not understand why putting those same details into HeidiSQL's SSH tunnel info won't work. I also downloaded the MySQL Workbench and attempted to set up a connection through that client and got this message: Cannot Connect to Database Server Your connection attempt failed for user 'myusername' from your host to server at localhost:3306: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 0 Please: 1 Check that mysql is running on server localhost 2 Check that mysql is running on port 3306 (note: 3306 is the default, but this can be changed) 3 Check the myusername has rights to connect to localhost from your address (mysql rights define what clients can connect to the server and from which machines) 4 Make sure you are both providing a password if needed and using the correct password for localhost connecting from the host address you're connecting from From Googling around I see that it could be related to the MySQL bind-address, but I am a third party sub-contractor with no access to the MySQL settings of this box and the system admin is assuring me that I'm an idiot and need to figure it out on my end. This is completely possible but I don't know what else to try. Edit 1 - The client settings I am using In Heidi and MySQL Workbench I am using the following: SSH host + port: theHostnameOfTheRemoteServer.com:22 {this is the same host I can Putty to} SSH Username: mySSHusername {the same user name I use for my Putty connection} SSH Password: mySSHpassword {the same password for the Putty connection} Local port: 3307 {this is on the SSH settings tab and was defaulted to 3307 by Heidi, changing it to 3306 gives me a different error: SQL Error (1045) in statement #0: Access denied for user 'mySQLusername'@'localhost' (using password: YES)"} MySQL host: theHostnameOfTheRemoteServer.com {consensus seems to be I should use 'localhost' here} MySQL User: mySQLusername {which I can connect with once in with Putty} MySQL Password: mySQLpassword {which works once in with Putty} Port: 3306

    A lot of people are compressing files with RAR, sending compressed files with RAR and so on. ZIP is more standard and works on all platforms. Windows users have ZIP included and linux users have no trouble with that file format. The tests I did sometime ago showed me that RAR compress better (some KyloBytes, no more) but not enough to use a non-free software when ZIP works on almost all the computers for free. Why do some people use RAR rather than ZIP for compressing?

    Why does a 32bit domU (Xen guest VM) use less RAM than a 64bit? Notes: The same software complied for a different arch(AMD64 vs. 686). Obviously this is Linux or BSD or something easily ported. Maybe this is also a good one for SO. I've read this is so. I can guess why, but I'd like to hear everyone's comments.

The command in my code is : system("wget", "$url", "-Omy_folder/$date-$target.html", "--user-agent=$useragent"); I've tried using " /dev/null 2&1" in different places in the system command, like this- system("wget", "$url", "-Omy_folder/$date-$target.html", "--user-agent=$useragent"," /dev/null 2&1"); Can anyone help me with where the redirection to /dev/null should be?

  • Biometric access control for time-reporting system

    I made a simple REST application to control the presence of workers. Now I'm looking for an inexpensive (100-250$) hardware, possibly linux based, with a fingerprint reader from which I can perform the user authentication and interact with the application (both the activities) via REST. I saw hundreds of different devices on internet which are supposed to do these activities but there are no good datasheets for them and it's very difficult to understand what's possible to do with those devices.     Just installed it on my linux desktop, and I only want 1 or 2 files accessible to the outside world. Everything else should only be accessibly via http://localhost/ for various privacy/security reasons. It is just a test server, don't want just anybody accessing my large batch files. How would you go about allowing only certain select files access to the internet and making everything else available only via http://localhost/?

    Whilst trying to commit some files to SVN, we're suddenly all getting this error Can't move '/usr/local/svn/articles/db/txn-protorevs/2002-8.rev' to '/usr/local/svn/articles/db/revs/2/2003': Permission denied I checked the permissions in the repository, and they look the same as all our other repositories, yet this is the only repo that causes the error. Any ideas how I can fix this? SVN is running as root on Linux via svnserve, FWIW.

What I would like to do is setup a new machine with XenServer and install two virtual machines--one running IPCop and one running Linux with Apache. Then I would configure IPCop to have the external IP address and forward port 80 to an internal IP on the second virtual machine. Is this even possible?

    I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. My trial and error process goes like so: Modify grub.conf Install grub.conf into MBR via grub shell Reboot Kernel panic In the interests of removing #4, am I missing a step in which I need to update the initramfs image? What does the initramfs image contain that might pertain to which filesystems are mounted during boot?

    Is there a way to set up a Mac or Linux so that one can connect two mice and two keyboards with both users having independent input on the screen with their respective mice and keyboards? I'd like to set up an environment for pairwise programming, and in particular have two developers be able to concurrently edit different documents on the same computer screen, but each person having different keyboards and mice. I'd be much obliged for any input and direction.

    I recently found that when I build my C++ software, I get about a 10% speedup by using the g++ march=native option. When compiling gcc and libstc++, is it possible to tune the libstdc++ library to the native architecture as well? I couldn't find any mention of this in the gcc install configuration documentation. (I'm building gcc 4.6.2 on Linux Mint 11 with an Intel Core i7 Sandy Bridge-E processor.)

I rebooted the laptop but nothing has changed.
