• Why does my performance increase when touching the screen?

  For some reason my FPS jumps up considerably when I move my mouse around on the screen (on the emulator) while holding the left mouse button. Normally my game is very laggy, but if I touch the screen (and as long as I am moving the mouse around while touching) it goes perfectly smooth. I have tried sleeping for 20ms in the onTouchEvent, but it doesn't appear to make any difference. • jQuery DatePicker - 'fake' click on page load

  Hey! I've got a quick question about the jQuery UI DatePicker. When I load the page, defaultDate: 0 will work fine with selecting the current day's date. I would like to create a 'fake' click on the date so it will execute my JavaScript function and retrieve information from the database. • Parallax backgrounds in OpenGL ES on the iPhone

  I've got basically a 2d game on the iPhone and I'm trying to set up multiple backgrounds that scroll at different speeds (known as parallax backgrounds). So my thought was to just stick the backgrounds BEHIND the foreground using different z-coordinate planes, and just make them bigger than the foreground (in size) to accommodate, so that the whole thing can be scrolled (just at a different speed). And (as far as I know) I basically implemented that. The only problem is that it seems to entirely ignore whatever z-value I give it, or rather it just zeroes all of them. I see the background (I've only tested ONE background so far, to keep it simple...so for now I just have a foreground and I want one background scrolling at a different speed), but it scrolls 1:1 with my foreground, so it obviously doesn't look right, and most of it is cut off (cause it's bigger). And I've tried various z-values for the background and various near/far clipping planes...it's always the same. I'm probably just doing one simple thing wrong, but I can't figure it out. I'm wondering if it has to do with me using only 2 coordinates in glVertexPointer for the foreground? Note the z value this time. I did make sure the data in this array was correct while debugging (getting the right z values). Not the case for me. Seems like it should be pretty basic and not even really be affected by my projection and all that (though I've even tried doing glFrustum just for fun, no success).   I used a lot of tutorials to turn my windows authenticated default wss web app to use Forms Authentication. What I've done since; 1. created a web app. and a site in wss 3.0. Made its anonymous access enabled for all site content. This wss app is in the "wss3" server. 2. created a membership db with regsql.exe in .net framework folder.Created it with its default settings, like aspnetdb named database.This db is in the "sqlserver" server. 3. gave db.owner permission to the web app. admin of wss to the aspnetdb database. Successfully logged in. With no privilages ofcourse. 9. Tried to give permission via Web Application Policy to that user which logged in. 10. People Picker couldn't find it at all. Any of the forms users couldn't be found. But it clearly tells that AD connection is also changed that none of the AD users couldn't be found either.   Hi, I have a memory leak in my app. (This is the first of many I'm sure :() I've being trying to use Instruments to find it. Instruments gives me a lot of information but I think I must just not know how to use this information. What I did so far was 1) Run the app with Instruments 2) Memory Leak Occurs named general -stack 16 3) Find general - stack 16 in the object allocations part of instruments 4) The information here says the event type is a malloc, that webcore is responsible and the something named WKSetCurrentGraphicContext is the responsible caller. How can I use this given information to discover where in my code the leak is being caused? • SOAP PHP Parsing Error?

  I'm communicating with a SOAP service created with EJB -- it intermittently fails, and I've found a case where I can reliably reproduce. • Is this question too hard for a seasoned C++ architect?

  Background Information We're looking to hire a seasoned C++ architect (10+years dev, of which at least 6years must be C++ ) for a high frequency trading platform. Job advert says STL, Boost proficiency is a must with preferences to modern uses of C++. The company I work for is a Fortune 500 IB (aka finance industry), it requires passes in all the standard SHL tests (numeric, vocab, spatial etc) before interviews can commence. Everyone on the team was given the task of coming up with one question to ask the candidates during a written/typed test, please note this is the second test provided to the candidates, the first being Advanced IKM C++ test, done in the offices supervised and without internet access. People passing that do the second test. After roughly 70 candidates, my question has been determined to be statistically the worst performing - aka least number of people attempted it, furthermore even less people were able to give meaningful answers. Please note, the second test is not timed, the candidate can literally take as long as they like (we've had one person take roughly 10.5hrs) My question to SO is this, after SHL and IKM adv c++ tests, backed up with at least 6+ years C++ development experience, is it still ok not to be able to even comment about let alone come up with some loose strategy for solving the following question. The Question There is a class C with methods foo, boo, boo_and_foo and foo_and_boo. Each method takes i,j,k and l clock cycles respectively, where i < j, k < i+j and l < i+j. class C { public: int foo() {...} int boo() {...} int boo_and_foo() {...} int foo_and_boo() {...} }; In code one might write: C c; . . int i = c.foo() + c.boo(); But it would be better to have: int i = c.foo_and_boo(); What changes or techniques could one make to the definition of C, that would allow similar syntax of the original usage, but instead have the compiler generate the latter. Note that foo and boo are not commutative. Possible Solution We were basically looking for an expression templates based approach, and were willing to give marks to anyone who had even hinted or used the phrase or related terminology. We got only two people that used the wording, but weren't able to properly describe how they accomplish the task in detail. We use such techniques all over the place, due to the use of various mathematical operators for matrix and vector based calculations, for example to decide when to use IPP or hand woven implementations at compile time for a particular architecture and many other things. The particular area of software development requires microsecond response times. I believe could/should be able to teach a junior such techniques, but given the assumed caliber of candidates I expected a little more. Is this really a difficult question? Should it be removed? Or are we just not seeing the right candidates?

• Memory Troubles with UIImagePicker

  I'm building an app that has several different sections to it, all of which are pretty image-heavy. It ties in with my client's website and they're a "high-design" type outfit. One piece of the app is images uploaded from the camera or the library, and a tableview that shows a grid of thumbnails. Pretty reliably, when I'm dealing with the camera version of UIImagePickerControl, I get hit for low memory. If I bounce around that part of the app for a while, I occasionally and non-repeatably crash with "status:10 (SIGBUS)" in the debugger. On low memory warning, my root view controller for that aspect of the app goes to my data management singleton, cruises through the arrays of cached data, and kills the biggest piece, the image associated with each entry. I know it's not telling me about the actual memory footprint of the UIImages themselves, but it gives me SOME numbers at least, so I can see that SOMETHING'S happening. (Sorry for the hamfisted way I build that NSLog message too--I was going to fire another UIAlertView, but realized it'd be more useful to log it.) Pretty reliably, after toodling around in the image portion of the app for a while, I'll pull up the camera interface and get the low memory UIAlertView like three or four times in quick succession. So that's the situation. Now my specific questions: THE time I see this happening is when the UIPickerView's camera iris shuts. I click the button to take the picture, it does the "click" animation, and Instruments shows my memory footprint going from about 10mb to about 25mb, and sitting there until the image is delivered to my UIViewController, where usage drops back to 10 or 11mb again. If we make it through that without a memory warning, we're golden, but most likely we don't. Anything I can do to make that not be so expensive? Second, I have NSZombies enabled. Am I understanding correctly that that's actually preventing memory from being freed? Am I subjecting my app to an unfair test environment? Third, is there some way to programmatically get my memory usage? Or at least the usage for a UIImage object? I've scoured the docs and don't see anything about that.

• SqlBulkCopy is slow, doesn't utilize full network speed

  Hi, for that past couple of weeks I have been creating generic script that is able to copy databases. The goal is to be able to specify any database on some server and copy it to some other location, and it should only copy the specified content. The exact content to be copied over is specified in a configuration file. This script is going to be used on some 10 different databases and run weekly. And in the end we are copying only about 3%-20% of databases which are as large as 500GB. I have been using the SMO assemblies to achieve this. This is my first time working with SMO and it took a while to create generic way to copy the schema objects, filegroups ...etc. (Actually helped find some bad stored procs). Overall I have a working script which is lacking on performance (and at times times out) and was hoping you guys would be able to help. When executing the WriteToServer command to copy large amount of data ( 6GB) it reaches my timeout period of 1hr. Here is the core code for copying table data. The script is written in PowerShell. $query = ("SELECT * FROM $selectedTable " + $global:selectiveTables.Get_Item($selectedTable)).Trim() Write-LogOutput "Copying $selectedTable : '$query'" $cmd = New-Object Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand -argumentList $query, $source $cmd.CommandTimeout = 120; $bulkData = ([Data.SqlClient.SqlBulkCopy]$destination) $bulkData.DestinationTableName = $selectedTable; $bulkData.BulkCopyTimeout = $global:tableCopyDataTimeout # = 3600 $reader = $cmd.ExecuteReader(); $bulkData.WriteToServer($reader); # Takes forever here on large tables The source and target databases are located on different servers so I kept track of the network speed as well. The network utilization never went over 1% which was quite surprising to me. But when I just transfer some large files between the servers, the network utilization spikes up to 10%. I have tried setting the $bulkData.BatchSize to 5000 but nothing really changed. Increasing the BulkCopyTimeout to an even greater amount would only solve the timeout. I really would like to know why the network is not being used fully. Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on networking or bulk copy will be appreciated. And please let me know if you need more information. Thanks. UPDATE I have tweaked several options that increase the performance of SqlBulkCopy, such as setting the transaction logging to simple and providing a table lock to SqlBulkCopy instead of the default row lock. Also some tables are better optimized for certain batch sizes. Overall, the duration of the copy was decreased by some 15%. And what we will do is execute the copy of each database simultaneously on different servers. But I am still having a timeout issue when copying one of the databases. When copying one of the larger databases, there is a table for which I consistently get the following exception: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. It is thrown about 16 after it starts copying the table which is no where near my BulkCopyTimeout. Even though I get the exception that table is fully copied in the end. Also, if I truncate that table and restart my process for that table only, the tables is copied over without any issues. But going through the process of copying that entire database fails always for that one table. I have tried executing the entire process and reseting the connection before copying that faulty table, but it still errored out. My SqlBulkCopy and Reader are closed after each table. Any suggestions as to what else could be causing the script to fail at the point each time?

• PHP curl post to login to wordpress

  I followed http://stackoverflow.com/questions/724107 to login to wordpress, using php_curl, and it works fine as far I use WAMP, (apache/php). But when it comes to IIS on the dedicated server, it returns nothing. I have wrote the following function which is working fine on my local wamp, but when deployed to client's dedicated windows server 2k3, it doesn't. Somebody suggested in my previous question to do the following:- create a temporary table and insert here all relevant data that might end up in the final result set run several updates on this table, joining the required tables one at a time instead of all of them at the same time finally perform a query on this temporary table to extract the end result All this was done in a stored procedure, the end result has passed unit tests, and is blazing fast. I have never worked with temporary tables till now. Only if I could get some hints, kind of schematic representations so that I can start with... Is there something faulty with the query? What can be the reason behind 10+ seconds of execution time? How tags work in this system? When a tutor registers, tags are entered and tag relations are created with respect to tutor's details like name, surname etc. When a Tutors create packs, again tags are entered and tag relations are created with respect to pack's details like pack name, description etc. tag relations for tutors stored in tutors_tag_relations and those for packs stored in learning_packs_tag_relations.   I have a SQL query with three SELECT statements. A picture of the data tables generated by these three select statements is located at www.britestudent.com/pub/1.png. Each of the three data tables have identical columns. I want to combine these three tables into one table such that: (1) All rows in top table (Table1) are always included. (2) Rows in the middle table (Table2) are included only when the values in column1 (UserName) and column4 (CourseName) do not match with any row from Table1. Both columns need to match for the row in Table2 to not be included. (3) Rows in the bottom table (Table3) are included only when the value in column4 (CourseName) is not already in any row of the results from combining Table1 and Table2. I have had success in implementing (1) and (2) with an SQL query like this: SELECT DISTINCT UserName AS UserName, MAX(AmountUsed) AS AmountUsed, MAX(AnsweredCorrectly) AS AnsweredCorrectly, CourseName, MAX(course_code) AS course_code, MAX(NoOfQuestionsInCourse) AS NoOfQuestionsInCourse, MAX(NoOfQuestionSetsInCourse) AS NoOfQuestionSetsInCourse FROM ( "SELECT statement 1" UNION "SELECT statement 2" ) dt_derivedTable_1 GROUP BY CourseName, UserName Where "SELECT statement 1" is the query that generates Table1 and "SELECT statement 2" is the query that generates Table2. I can get away with using the MAX() function because values in the AmountUsed and AnsweredCorrectly columns in Table1 will always be larger than those in Table2 (and they are identical in the last three columns of both tables). What I fail at is implementing (3). Any suggestions on how to do this will be appreciated. It is tricky because the UserName values in Table3 are null, and because the CourseName values in the combined Table1 and Table2 results are not unique (but they are unique in Table3). After implementing (3), the final table should look like the table in picture 2.png with the addition of the last row from Table3 (the row with the CourseName value starting with "4. Klasse..." I have tried to implement (3) using another derived table using SELECT, MAX() and UNION, but I could not get it to work. Below is my full SQL query with the lines from this failed attempt to implement (3) commented out. • Silverlight: how to modify the width of ListBox Items in response to user input?

  I have a simple Silverlight 3 UserControl whose width increases or decreases based on user input. The controls become more wide or more narrow as desired, except for the ListBox items. The ListBox Items grow horizontally to fit their content regardless of HorizontalContentAlignment being set to 'Stretch'. Should I be able to set a property on ListBox.ItemContainerStyle to tell it to widen/narrow with the parent ListBox? There needs to be no horizontal scrolling within this Listbox. Or is there a way to specify the ItemTemplate's StackPanel width that can be modified at runtime? I have bound this to a StaticResource, but do not understand whether I should be able to change the resource value. Can I create and bind to a DependencyProperty of the UserControl itself? • WCF and Firewalls

  Hi guys, As a part of learning WCF, I was trying to use a simple WCF client-server code . http://weblogs.asp.net/ralfw/archive/2007/04/14/a-truely-simple-example-to-get-started-with-wcf.aspx but I'm facing strange issues.I was trying out the following. Client(My) IP address is : 192.168.2.5 (internal behind firewall) Server IP address is : 192.168.50.30 port : 9050 (internal behind firewall) Servers LIVE/External IP (on internet ) : 121.225.xx.xx (accessible from internet) When I specify the above I.P address of server(192.168.50.30), the client connects successfully and can call servers methods. Now suppose if I want to give my friend (outside network/on internet) the client with server's live I.P, i get an ENDPOINTNOTFOUND exceptions. Surprisingly if I run the above client specifying LIVE IP(121.225.xx.xx) of server i also get the same exception. I tried to debug the problem but haven't found anything. Is it a problem with the company firewall not forwarding my request? or is it a problem with the server or client . Is something needed to be added to the server/client to overcome the same problem? Or are there any settings on the firewall that need to be changed like port forwarding? (our network admin has configured the port to be accessible from the internet.) is it a authentication issue? • Recommended ASP.NET Shared Hosting (USA)

  Ok, I have to admit I'm getting fed up with www.discountasp.net's pricing model and this annoyance has built up over the past 8 years or so. I've been with them for years and absolutely love them on the technical side, however it's getting ridiculously expensive for so little that you get. I mean here's my scenario: 1) I am running 2 SQL Server databases which costs me $10/ea per month so that's $20/month for 2 and I only get 500 mb disk space which is horrible 2) I am paying $10/mo just for the hosting itself which I only get 1 gig of disk space! I mean common! 3) I am simply running 2 small apps (Screwturn Wiki & Subtext Blog)...so I don't really care if it's up 99% or not, it's not worth paying a total of $300 just to keep these 2 apps running over discountasp.net Anyone else feel the same? Yes, I know they have great support, probably have great servers running behind this but in the end I really don't care as long as my site is up 95% or better. Yes, the hosting toolset rocks. But you know I bet you I can find a similar set somewhere else. I like how I can totally control IIS 7 at discountasp and I can control my own app pool etc. That's very powerful and essential. But anyone have any good alternatives to discountasp that gives me close to the same at a much more reasonable cost point? I mean http://www.m6.net/prices.aspx gives you 10 SQL Databases for $7 and 200 gigs disk space! I don't know about their tools or support but just looking at those numbers and some other hosts I've seen, I feel that discountasp.net is way out of line. They don't even offer any purchasing discounts such as it would be nice if my 2nd SQL Server is only $5/month not $10...stuff like this, to make it much more realistic and fair. Opinions (people who do have discountasp.net, people who have left them, or people who have another host they like)??? But geez $300 just to host a couple DBs and lightweight open source apps? Not worth the price they are charging. I'm almost at a price point that enables me to get a decent dedicated server! I really don't care about beta ASP.NET frameworks support. Not a big deal to me. If you have alternative suggestions rather than your experience with discountasp, I'd like to know how their toolset is. Do you have complete control over your DB in terms of adding users, and same goes for the web app pool, etc.? Discountasp.net's control panel rocks. I don't want to loose the ability to at least control and add virtual directories, recycle my dedicated app pool myself, backup my sql database myself, through tools which is what discountasp does give you. I'd also want to know that the hoster at least gets the latest and greatest in terms of non-beta ASP.NET related frameworks available to its shared hosters.

• Is SHA-1 secure for password storage?

  Some people throw around remarks like "SHA-1 is broken" a lot, so I'm trying to understand what exactly that means. Let's assume I have a database of SHA-1 password hashes, and an attacker whith a state of the art SHA-1 breaking algorithm and a botnet with 100,000 machines gets access to it. (Having control over 100k home computers would mean they can do about 10^15 operations per second.) How much time would they need to find out the password of any one user? find out the password of a given user? find out the password of all users? find a way to log in as one of the users? find a way to log in as a specific user? How does that change if the passwords are salted? Does the method of salting (prefix, postfix, both, or something more complicated like xor-ing) matter? Here is my current understanding, after some googling. Please correct in the answers if I misunderstood something. If there is no salt, a rainbow attack will immediately find all passwords (except extremely long ones). If there is a sufficiently long random salt, the most effective way to find out the passwords is a brute force or dictionary attack. Neither collision nor preimage attacks are any help in finding out the actual password, so cryptographic attacks against SHA-1 are no help here. It doesn't even matter much what algorithm is used - one could even use MD5 or MD4 and the passwords would be just as safe (there is a slight difference because computing a SHA-1 hash is slower). To evaluate how safe "just as safe" is, let's assume that a single sha1 run takes 1000 operations and passwords contain uppercase, lowercase and digits (that is, 60 characters). That means the attacker can test 1015*60*60*24 / 1000 ~= 1017 potential password a day. For a brute force attack, that would mean testing all passwords up to 9 characters in 3 hours, up to 10 characters in a week, up to 11 characters in a year. (It takes 60 times as much for every additional character.) A dictionary attack is much, much faster (even an attacker with a single computer could pull it off in hours), but only finds weak passwords. To log in as a user, the attacker does not need to find out the exact password; it is enough to find a string that results in the same hash. This is called a first preimage attack. As far as I could find, there are no preimage attacks against SHA-1. (A bruteforce attack would take 2160 operations, which means our theoretical attacker would need 1030 years to pull it off. Limits of theoretical possibility are around 260 operations, at which the attack would take a few years.) There are preimage attacks against reduced versions of SHA-1 with negligible effect (for the reduced SHA-1 which uses 44 steps instead of 80, attack time is down from 2160 operations to 2157). There are collision attacks against SHA-1 which are well within theoretical possibility (the best I found brings the time down from 280 to 252), but those are useless against password hashes, even without salting. In short, storing passwords with SHA-1 seems perfectly safe. Did I miss something?

However, without any success in getting anything to happen at all I haven't been able to try the different approaches to see what feels right. I've ruled out the obvious things like a duplicate element ID or simply not linking to JQuery. Thank you.

If i build the code on my local machine then copy over the complete \bin directory it works. If I pull the code from source safe, build then copy, I get this error.
