• Maven deploy:deploy-file not found due to version/timestamp appended to jar

  I'm having a problem using deploy:deploy-file with snapshots I'd like some advice on please. I have 2 projects; 1) Ant based and 2) the other Maven based that consumes the jars of the other project via Archiva. I've added a target to the Ant project to deploy snapshots on every successful build during our iteration. The problem is the Maven project cannot find them because the name of the dependency has a timestamp appended like so: someJar-1.0-20100407.171211-1.jar Here is the Ant target: <exec executable="${maven.bin}" dir="../lib"> <arg value="deploy:deploy-file" /> <arg value="-DgroupId=com.my.package" /><arg value="-DartifactId=${ant.project.name}" /> <arg value="-Dversion=${manifest.implementation.version}-SNAPSHOT" /> <arg value="-Dpackaging=jar" /> <arg value="-Dfile=../lib/${ant.project.name}-${manifest.implementation.version}-SNAPSHOT.jar" /> <arg value="-Durl=http://archiva.xxx.com/archiva/repository/snapshots" /> <arg value="-DrepositoryId=snapshots" /> </exec> I have a similar Ant target for releases and this works fine. • Why a Swing app stops my Java servlet ?

  I have a Swing runnable app which updates messages, then I have a Java servlet that gets messages from Paypal IPN (Instant Payment Notification), when the servlet starts up, in the init(), I starts the Swing runnable app which opens a desktop window, but 30 minutes later an error in the Swing caused the servlet to stop, how can that happen ? • ORM Persistence by Reachability violates Aggregate Root Boundaries?

  Most common ORMs implement persistence by reachability, either as the default object graph change tracking mechanism or an optional. Persistence by reachability means the ORM will check the aggregate roots object graph and determines wether any objects are (also indirectly) reachable that are not stored inside it's identity map (Linq2Sql) or don't have their identity column set (NHibernate). In NHibernate this corresponds to cascade="save-update", for Linq2Sql it is the only supported mechanism. They do both, however only implement it for the "add" side of things, objects removed from the aggregate roots graph must be marked for deletion explicitly. In a DDD context one would use a Repository per Aggregate Root. Objects inside an Aggregate Root may only hold references to other Aggregate Roots. Due to persistence by reachability it is possible this other root will be inserted in the database event though it's corresponding repository wasn't invoked at all! Consider the following two Aggregate Roots: Contract and Order. Request is part of the Contract Aggregate. The object graph looks like Contract->Request->Order. Each time a Contractor makes a request, a corresponding order is created. As this involves two different Aggregate Roots, this operation is encapsulated by a Service. //Unit Of Work begins Request r = ...; Contract c = ContractRepository.FindSingleByKey(1); Order o = OrderForRequest(r); // creates a new order aggregate r.Order = o; // associates the aggregates c.Request.Add(r); ContractRepository.SaveOrUpdate(c); // OrderAggregate is reachable and will be inserted Since this Operation happens in a Service, I could still invoke the OrderRepository manually, however I wouldn't be forced to!. Persistence by reachability is a very useful feature inside Aggregate Roots, however I see no way to enforce my Aggregate Boundaries.

• Application/Server dependency mapping

  I'm just curious as to whether such as tool exists (free, open source, or commercial but for a reasonable price) before I build it myself. We're looking for a simple solution to simplify taking web apps online and offline when a server is undergoing maintenance. The idea is that we be able to mark a server as unavailable, and then mark all dependent (direct and indirect) as offline. Our first proof-of-concept is running, and we created an aspx page that lists various applications that have an App_Offline.html file with a friendly "Down for Maintenance" message in a GridView. In the GridView, each app has a LinkButton that, when clicked, either renames the App_Offline.htm to App_Offline.html or vice-versa to take the app online and offline. The next step is to set up all of our dependencies. For example, our store locater would be dependent on our web services, which in turn are dependent on our SQL Server. (that's a simple example. We can easily have several layers, or one app dependent on multiple servers, etc.) In this example, if the SQL server goes down, we would need to drill down recursively to find all apps that depend on it, and then turn them off and on by renaming the App_Offline file appropriately. I realize this will be relatively simple to build, but could be complex to manage. I'm sure we're not the first team to think of this concept, and I'm wondering if there are any open source tools, or if any of you have done something similar and can help us avoid pitfalls. Edit - Update I found the category of software I'm looking for. it's called CMDB - (Configuration Management Database), and it's generally more of a Network Admin type tool than a developer tool. I found some open source products in this category, but none written in .NET. I had considered moving this question to ServerFault.com when I realized I was looking for a netowrk Admin type tool, but since I'm looking for code and a modifiable solution I'll keep the question here.

• Why is the UpdatePanel Response size changing on alternate requests?

  We are using UpdatePanel in a small portion of a large page and have noticed a performance problem where IE7 becomes CPU bound and the control within the UpdatePanel takes a long time (upwards of 30 seconds) to render. We also noticed that Firefox does not seem to suffer from these delays. We ran both Fiddler (for IE) and Firebug (for Firefox) and noticed that the real problem lied with the amount of data being returned in update panel responses. Within the UpdatePanel control there is a table that contains a number of ListBox controls. The real problem is that EVERY OTHER TIME the response (from making ListBox selections) alternates from 30K to 430K. Firefox handles the 400+K response in a reasonable amount of time. For whatever reason, IE7 goes CPU bound while it is presumably processing this data. So irrespective of whether or not we should be using an UpdatePanel or not, we'd like to figure out why every other async postback response is larger by a factor of more than 10 than the previous one. When the response is in the 30K range, IE updates the display within a second. On the alternate times, the response time is well over 10 times longer. Any idea why this alternating behavior should be happening with an UpdatePanel?

• Weird RecordStore behavior when RecordStoreFullException occurs

  Hello everyone! I'm developing a small J2ME application that displays bus stops timetables - they are stored as records in MIDP RecordStores. Sometimes records can not fit a single RecordStore, especially on record update - using setRecord method - a RecordStoreFullException occurs. I catch the exception, and try to write the record to a new RecordStore along with deleting the previous one in the old RecordStore. Everything works fine except of deleting record from RecordStore where the RecordStoreFullException occurs. If I make an attempt to delete record that could not be updated, another Exception of type InvalidRecordIDException is thrown. This is weird and undocumented in MIDP javadoc. I have tested it on Sun WTK 2.5.2, MicroEdition SDK 3.0 and Nokia Series 40 SDK.   I'm pretty new to the EDM, so bear with me. I have a windows form that has a DataGridView on it that's bound from the EDM I created. I figured out how to update my changes fine, but it's when the user creates a new row that I'm having a problem. I tried numerous ways and many google searches, but came up with nothing so far.   I'm in the processes of internationalizing an iPhone app - I need to make programmatic changes to certain views based on what the user's current locale is. I'm going nuts because no matter what the language preference on the iPhone simulator or actual hardware are, locale always evaluates to "en_US": NSString *locale = [[NSLocale currentLocale] localeIdentifier]; NSLog(@"current locale: %@", locale); The crazy thing is that the rest of the application behaves as expected. The correct strings are selected from the Localization.strings file and used in the interface, and the correct .xib files for the selected locale are used. I have also tried the following, to no avail and with the same result: NSString *locale = [[NSLocale autoupdatingCurrentLocale] localeIdentifier]; NSLog(@"current locale: %@", locale); Is there something simple I'm missing? A preference or an import perhaps? • NSURL URLWithString: raises exception

  In short, [NSURL URLWithString:] appears to be raising an exception. According to the documentation "If the string was malformed, returns nil." There is no mention of an exception being raised under any circumstance. In addition to this, I am both encoding the URL and checking for nil before converting the string to a URL. Can anyone offer any advice as to which exception it could be or what other error checking I should be doing before converting the URL? Update (14/7/2009): Seems like such a hack, but I added an exception block around the suspect line. I also raised a Radar bug report (#7031551) suggesting that the code should match the documentation.

• VS2010 and Windows XP SP3

  At home I've been running VS 2010 on a Windows 7 x64 machine without any issues, however at work we recently switched over to VS 2010 running on WinXP SP3 x86 - and I gotta say, the experience is terrible. There are severe graphical glitches. For ex, Intellisense doesn't quite work. You can start typing and the intellisense dropdown window seems to be working, but the text I'm typing vanishes. I can't see it until I hit the Escape key or refresh the window by say, alt-tabbing to another application and then back again to VS2010 If I cut/copy/paste and then move the cursor around by scrolling or using the arrow keys, different parts of the text window don't update themselves properly. I can see patches of a different piece of code where it shouldn't be. Other team members are also facing the similar issues as well. Is there some patch that I should install? I have already installed the UIA 3 patch ScottGu mentioned in his blog. Any help would be appreciated. -Thanks!

• Pre Commit Hook for JSLint in Mercurial and Git

  I want to run JSLint before a commit into either a Mercurial or Git repo is done. I want this as an automatic step that is set up instead of relying on the developer (mainly me) remembering to run JSLint before-hand. I normally run JSLint while developing, but want to specify a contract on JS files that they pass JSLint before being committed to the repo. For Mercurial, this page spells out the precommit syntax, but the only variables that seem to be available are the parent1 and parent2 changeset IDs involved in the commit. What I really want are a list of file names that are involved with the commit, so that I can then choose the .js file and run jslint over them. Similar issue for GIT, the default info available as part of the precommit script seems limited. What might work is calling hg status/git status as part of the precommit script, parse that output to find JS files then do the work that way. I was hoping for something easier though, and I am not sure if calling status as part of a precommit hook reflect the correct information. For instance in Git if the changes files have not been added yet, but the git commit uses -a, would the files show up in the correct section of the git status output as being part of the commit set? • ASP.NET validation not executing in a JavaScript showModalDialog call

  I currently open a pop up window from my parent page using using a JavaScript .showModalDialog function. The pop up window contains some ASP.NET validation controls which do not display when the user clicks the ASP.NET button to submit the form. If there is an error on the page, the validation message(s) do not display, the record is not updated on the server side and the pop window closes. (The asp.net validation controls do not stop the pop up window from doing a server postback) Has anyone expereinced this behavior before and is there any way to prevent it? • Get ListView Visible items

  I have a ListView which might contains a lot of items, so it is virtualized and recycling items. It does not use sort. I need to refresh some value display, but when there are too many items, it is too slow to update everything, so I would like to refresh only the visible items. How could I get a list of all currently displayed items ? I tried to look into the ListView or in the ScrollViewer, but I still have no idea how to achieve this. The solution must NOT go through all items to test if they can be seen, because this would be too slow. I'm not sure code or xaml would be usefull, it is just a Virtualized/Recycling ListView with its ItemSource bound to an Array. Edit Answer : thanks to akjoshi, i found the way : get the ScrollViewer of the ListView (with a FindDescendant method, that you can do yourself with the VisualTreeHelper ). Then use its ScrollViewer.VerticalOffset : it is the number of the first item shown and ScrollViewer.ViewportHeight : it is the count of items shown. Rq : CanContentScroll must be true.

  I've been tinkering with Yahoo Pipes and the Amazon E-Commerce Service (ECS) SDK to retrieve my wishlist. The problem is that although I can get all the items on my wishlist just fine, it seems to include items that I've deleted too. Has anyone else used this API and noticed this? • C# Windows Mobile 6.5 and TCP connections

  Hello, I am developing an application which makes a TCP connection out to our company server to pull down data and provide real-time data updates when the information changes. I am using the .NET Compact Framework for the development and the .NET Framework 3.5 (soon to update to 4.0) for the server-side TCP connection. I want to leave the connection open after the initial data is sent to the device from the server in order to keep the server in contact with the device should data updates need to be sent to the device. We already considered doing a WCF or connect/disconnect type of connection but we believe the overhead on the server for creating the session, transmitting and session cleanup would be unacceptable. (each device would be connecting every 60-90 seconds.) So, leaving the connection open is the best option. What I need to know is, when I leave the TCP connection open, do I need to manually transmit a heartbeat (and if so how do I do that with the .NET Compact Framework) or will the framework/stack do that for me? We have code that allows up to reconnect if the device gets disconnected (from network switching or a voice call) so that is handled. Thanks,

  I've got a database change management workflow in place. It's based on SQL scripts (so, it's not a managed code-based solution). The basic setup looks like this: Initial/ Generate Initial Schema.sql Generate Initial Required Data.sql Generate Initial Test Data.sql Migration 0001_MigrationScriptForChangeOne.sql 0002_MigrationScriptForChangeTwo.sql ... The process to spin up a database is to then run all the Initlal scripts, and then run the sequential Migration scripts. A tool takes case of the versioning requirements, etc. My question is, in this kind of setup, is it useful to also maintain this: Current/ Stored Procedures/ dbo.MyStoredProcedureCreateScript.sql ... Tables/ dbo.MyTableCreateScript.sql ... ... By "this" I mean a directory of scripts (separated by object type) that represents the create scripts for spinning up the current/latest version of the database. For some reason, I really like the idea, but I can't concretely justify it's need. Am I missing something? The advantages would be: For dev and source control, we would have the same object-per-file setup that we're used to For deployment, we can spin up a new DB instance to the latest version either by running the Initial+Migrate, or by running the scripts from Current/ For dev, we do not need a DB instance running in order to do development. We can do "offline" development on the Current/ folder. The disadvantages would be: For each change, we need to update the scripts in the Current/ folder, as well as create a Migration script (in the Migration/ folder) Thanks in advance for any input!

• WCF: Per-Call and Per-Session services...need convincing that Per-Call is worthwhile

  Hello all. We are currently doing a review of our WCF service design and one thing that is bothering me is the decision between Per-Call and Per-Session services. I believe I understand the concept behind both, but I am not really seeing the advantage of Per-Call services. I understand that the motivation for using Per-Call services is that a WCF services only holds a servier object for the life of a call thereby restricting the time that an expensive resource is held by the service instance, but to me its much simpler to use the more OO like Per-Session model where your proxy object instance always corrisponds to the same server object instance and just handle any expensive resources manually. For example, say I have a CRUD Service with Add, Update, Delete, Select methods on it. This could be done as a Per-Call service with database connection (the "expensive resource") instanciated in the server object constructor. Alternately it could be a Per-Session service with a database connection instanciated and closed within each CRUD method exposed. To me it is no different resource wise and it makes the programming model simpler as the client can be assured that they always have the same server object for their proxies: any in-expensive state that there may be between calls is maintained and no extra parameters are needed on methods to identify what state data must be retrieved by the service when it is instanciating a new server object again (as in the case of Per-Call). Its just like using classes and objects, where the same resource management issues apply, but we dont create new object instances for each method call we have on an object! So what am I missing with the Per-Call model? Thanks

• GridView doesn't remember state between postbacks

  Hi, I have a simple ASP page with databound grid (bound to an object source). The grid is within the page of a wizard and has a 'select' checkbox for each row. In one stage of the wizard, I bind the GridView: protected void Wizard1_NextButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e) { ... // Bind and display matches GridViewMatches.EnableViewState = true; GridViewMatches.DataSource = getEmailRecipients(); GridViewMatches.DataBind(); And when the finish button is clicked, I iterate through the rows and check what's selected: protected void Wizard1_FinishButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e) { // Set the selected values, depending on the checkboxes on the grid. foreach (GridViewRow gr in GridViewMatches.Rows) { Int32 personID = Convert.ToInt32(gr.Cells[0].Text); CheckBox selected = (CheckBox) gr.Cells[1].FindControl("CheckBoxSelectedToSend"); But at this stage GridViewMatches.Rows.Count = 0! I don't re-bind the grid, I shouldn't need to, right? I expect the view-state to maintain the state. (Also, if I do rebind the grid, my selection checkboxes will be cleared) NB: This page also dynamically adds user controls in OnInit method. I have heard that it might mess with the view state, but as far as I can tell, I am doing it correctly and the viewstate for those added controls seems to work (values are persisted between postbacks) Thanks a lot in advance for any help! Ryan UPDATE: Could this be to do with the fact I am setting the datasource programatically? I wondered if the asp engine was databinding the grid during the page lifecycle to a datasource that was not yet defined. (In a test page, the GridView is 'automatically' databound'. I don't want the grid to re-bound I just want the values from the viewstate from the previous post! Also, I have this in the asp header: ViewStateEncryptionMode="Never" - this was to resolve an occasional 'Invalid Viewstate Validation MAC' message Thanks again Ryan

• Silverlight 4, combobox databinding problem

  In my Silverlight 4 app, CustomerView (UserControl) shows Customer object as it's DataContext. Customer object has IndustryCode string property. I created combobox called cboIndustryCode and bind it to the IndustryCode property the following way: <ComboBox x:Name="cboIndustryCode" SelectedValue="{Binding IndustryCode, Mode=TwoWay}" ... /> In code-behind I populate cboIndustryCode with List of Industry object, which has Code and Name properties: cboIndustryCode.ItemsSource = industries; //which is of List<Industry> type Now, to show everything properly, in XAML I added the following: <ComboBox x:Name="cboIndustryCode" SelectedValue="{Binding IndustryCode, Mode=TwoWay}" DisplayMemberPath="Name" SelectedValuePath="Code" ... /> So, when I get a customer class from my data layer and set the DataContext to this customer instance, the cboIndustryCode properly displays industry name. But, then I edit customer (not necessarily IndustryCode) and save the object (which resets DataContext = new Customer()) and retrieve the customer again from database, and I see that cboIndustryCode no longer working. It just displays nothing, and if I select new value from the list, it does not update underlying customer object's IndustryCode property. The problem goes away, if I put the following code in the place where I set DataContext to a instance of customer, retrieved from database: Binding binding = new Binding("IndustryCode"); binding.Mode = BindingMode.TwoWay; cboIndustryCode.SetBinding(ComboBox.SelectedValueProperty, binding); So, in short, combobox's binding is reset somehow every time I save my data. Can someone tell me the reason?
