• Separating weakly linked database schemas

  I've been tasked with revisiting a database schema we designed and use internally for various ticketing and reporting systems. Currently there exists about 40 tables in one Oracle database schema supporting perhaps six webapps. However, there's one unifying relationship amongst them all: a rooms table describing the room. Room name, purpose and other data are thrown into a shared table for each app. My initial idea was to pull each of these applications into a separate database, and perform joins between a given database and the room database. But I've discovered this solution prevents foreign key constraints in SQL Server 2005. It seems silly to duplicate one table for each app and keep those multiple copies synchronized. Should I just leave everything in one large DB, or is there something else I can do separate the tables without losing FK constraints?

  I watch some video and read articles about MVVM pattern and start thinking how should I implement it in my Silverlight app. So at first I create Silverlight application. I think that for clear view I create 3 folders: View - for each user control page in my app, ViewModel - for c# class which will querying date and Model- Entity Data Model of my SQL Server or Oracle Database. And now I am confused, cause I want to implement *WCF/RIA Services/Web services* in my project. In which folder should I put in class of services? I see in examples that Services take date and filtering it and then output data was binding in View - so It looks as ViewModel. But I was sure that someone use Services in Model and that I want to do. But how? Can someone explain me implementing Services as Model? Is my point of view at MVVM is correctly?

  I heard lots of good opinions about Python language. They say it's mature, expressive etc... Are there any production-ready web application frameworks in Python. By "production ready" I mean : supports objective-relational mapping with caching and declarative desciption (like JPA, Hibernate etc..) controls oriented user interface support - no HTML templates but something like JSF (RichFaces, Icefaces) or GWT, Vaadin, ZK component decomposition and dependency injection (like EJB or Spring) unit and integration testing good IDE support clustering, modularity etc (like Terracota, OSGi etc..) there are successful applications written in it by companies like IBM, Oracle etc (I mean real business applications not Twitter) could have commercial support Is it possible at all in Python world ? Or only choices are : use Python and write everything from the bottom (too expensice) stick to JEE buy .NET stack

• Which Workflow Engine do you recommend?

  I am kicking around the idea of using a workflow engine on this upcoming project. We know that there is a lot of caveats with using a workflow engine and we have a lot of development experience in many platforms so we would be willing to let the choice of workflow engine take precedence over our favorite toolset or developer IDE. We are more interested in internal workflow (i.e. petri net for easily changeable ERP purposes without involving additional coder time) than external workflow (i.e. aggregating SOAP calls into a transaction aware, higher level SOA). Which workflow engine would you recommend? We have superficially looked at offerings by Oracle, Microsoft, and some open source stuff too. It's all very overwhelming so please respond only if you have real life experience with implementing internal workflow.

• PostgreSQL - disabling constraints

  I have a table with approx 5 million rows which has a fk constraint referencing the primary key of another table (also approx 5 million rows). I need to delete about 75000 rows from both tables. I know that if I try doing this with the fk constraint enabled it's going to take an unacceptable amount of time. Coming from an Oracle background my first thought was to disable the constraint, do the delete & then reenable the constraint. PostGres appears to let me disable constraint triggers if I am a super user (I'm not, but I am logging in as the user that owns/created the objects) but that doesn't seem to be quite what I want. The other option is to drop the constraint and then reinstate it. I'm worried that rebuilding the constraint is going to take ages given the size of my tables. Any thoughts?

• Good Front end for PostgreSQL on Windows or Mac

  I'm considering using postgreSQL 8.4x db on windows/Mac for development and linux for production. wondering what front-end tools are out there that are comparable to Toad (for Oracle) ? PostgreSQL comes with PgAdminIII. It's OK but I feel there might be something better than that. I prefer free or open source but if something is NOT too expensive(we are a NON-PROFIT), would not mind evaluating. minimal tools that I want 1) connection manager 2) Nice SQL Editor 3) Explain Plan 4) help with SQL embedding into various languages. 5) E-R diagrams would be good but this would not be a killer feature for me. Anything work for you guys ? Will be using java 6 to build the application(s) if that is relevant at all. Thank you,

  J2EE as I understand is used to build Enterprise applications. My question is :What are the most popular public facing(internet) sites using j2ee stack. The one's that I know of are : linkedIn.com ,evite.com and sun ibm and oracle (obviously) Eclipse.org uses php, I wonder why? If you have worked on/know any other sites, can your share your experience and also the technologies used(if that's not an issue)? EDIT:It doesn't have to use the full stack. EDIT : There are quite a few ecommerce websites like bestbuy.com. I know this bcos I worked with the ATG(atg.com) ecommerce suite and their website lists their clients. • add Constraint on database with trigger

  Hi, I have 3 tables (Student, Course, student_course_choose(have field grade)) I defined a view on these 3 tables that get me an Average of the each student. I want to have constraint(with trigger) on these view(or on the table that need it) to limit the average of each student between 13 and 18. I somewhere read that I must use foreach statement(instead of foreach row) on trigger because when I decrease some grade of special student and his/her average become less than 13 they don't give me error (because later I increase grade of another his/her course ). how must I wrote this Trigger? (I want to implement aprh for testing trigger) note:I can write it in SQL server, oracle or Mysql no diff for me.

• Is Eclipse Remote System Explorer broken on Windows?

  I have the following setup on Windows 7 Ultimate x64: Eclipse Indigo 2.7.2 (Build: M20120208-0800) Remote System Explorer 3.3.2 (see screenshot) (Oracle/Sun) Java 1.6 Update 31 (x86) Despite all my best efforts I am unable to connect to a remote system (a Centos 5.6 server on my local LAN) using a Remote System Explorer SSH connection - I've tried both password authentication and using my SSH private key. Here is a screenshot of both the Eclipse error dialogue and what is logged in my /var/log/secure log file: /var/log/secure: Apr 1 12:00:21 nagios sshd[6176]: Received disconnect from 172.16.3.88: 3: com.jcraft.jsch.JSchException: Auth fail When I connect for the first time I do get prompted to verify the authenticity of the remote host and the RSA key fingerprint. But that's as far as things go. Performing the same operation with the same credentials on my Fedora Core 16 box (also running the same version of Eclipse and Java) to the same server is successful. This leads me to believe that RSE SSH support on Windows is either broken or there's some piece of the SSH-on-Windows puzzle I'm missing. Is this the case?

• Opening a Silverlight project causes APPCRASH is Visual Studio 2008

  Hi guys I've got to add a Silverlight project to a solution for a deployment procedure (it's a pre-build dependency for the main project). I've installed Silverlight tools v3, silverlight itself and the silverlight sdk 3, and am using Visual Studio 2008 with ReSharper and the DevArt oracle database tools. Every time I go to open the relevant silverlight .csproj file VS crashes with the following error message: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: devenv.exe Application Version: 9.0.30729.1 Application Timestamp: 488f2b50 Fault Module Name: StackHash_20af Fault Module Version: 6.0.6001.18000 Fault Module Timestamp: 4791a7a6 Exception Code: c0000374 Exception Offset: 000b015d This also happens if I try to create a new silverlight project from scratch. • How to delete data in DB efficiently using LinQ to NHibernate (one-shot-delete)

  Hello, producing software for customers, mostly using MS SQL but some Oracle, a decision was made to plunge into Nhibernate (and C#). The task is to delete efficiently e.g. 10 000 rows from 100 000 and still stay sticked to ORM. I've tried named queries - link already, IQuery sql = s.GetNamedQuery("native-delete-car").SetString(0, "Kirsten"); sql.ExecuteUpdate(); but the best I have ever found seems to be: using (ITransaction tx = _session.BeginTransaction()) { try { string cmd = "delete from Customer where Id < GetSomeId()"; var count = _session.CreateSQLQuery(cmd).ExecuteUpdate(); ... Since it may not get into dB to get all complete rows before deleting them. My questions are: If there is a better way for this kind of delete. If there is a possibility to get the Where condition for Delete like this: Having a select statement (using LinQ to NHibernate) = which will generate appropriate SQL for DB = we get that Where condition and use it for Delete. Later it read using file handle 256. So what's the point to duplicate the file handle? A company can have its network like inverstors, partners, competitors and customers etc. I want to realize a dynamic social networking graph for it. And it has to be implemented by php. Right now, i know SugarCRM and vTigerCRM are php open source CRMs. And SugarCRM provides some social functions. And there are a lot of other CRMs, while i'm not sure if they are realized by php, such as: ACT!, Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle Siebel Social CRM, Salesforce, BatchBlue, Buzzient etc. Do you know any other php CRMs, especially php social CRMs? • Are there cross-platform tools to write XSS attacks directly to the database?

  I've recently found this blog entry on a tool that writes XSS attacks directly to the database. It looks like a terribly good way to scan an application for weaknesses in my applications. I've tried to run it on Mono, since my development platform is Linux. Unfortunately it crashes with a System.ArgumentNullException deep inside Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary and I seem to be unable to find sufficient information about the software (it seems to be a single-shot project, with no homepage and no further development). Is anyone aware of a similar tool? Preferably it should be: cross-platform (Java, Python, .NET/Mono, even cross-platform C is ok) open source (I really like being able to audit my security tools) able to talk to a wide range of DB products (the big ones are most important: MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, ...)

• Is Alpha Five Version 10 really all that its reported to be?

  I came across this RDMS via the advert on stackoverflow. Seems to be in the vein of MS Access / Filemaker / Apex database devlopment tools but focused on web based applications. It quotes rave reviews from EWeek and a favourable mention from Dr Dobbs regarding its ability to create AJAX web applications without coding. The Eweek review, apparently written by an ASP.NET programmer, goes on to proclaim the ease at which apps can be extended using the inbuilt XBasic language and how custom javascript can easily be added without wading through code. Has anyone here built a web app with Alpha 5? Does anyone have comments on the development process, the speed of it or limitations they encountered along the way? To me it seems Oracle APEX comes closest to the feature set, has anyone programmed in both and have any comments?

  Hi all, Is this statement true: com.sun.xml.internal package is an internal package as the name suggestes. Users should not write code that depends on internal JDK implementation classes. Such classes are internal implementation details of the JDK and subject to change without notice One of my colleagues used one of the classes in his code, which caused javac task in Ant fail to compile our project as the compiler couldn't find the class. Answer from Sun/Oracle says that this is expected behavior of the compiler as user shouldn't use the package. Question is why the classes in the package made public in the first place? Thanks, Sarah

I have seen oracle has implemented Replicated Cache Service. http://wiki.tangosol.com/display/COH32UG/Replicated+Cache+Service The problem I am facing is while doing an update or remove, I acquire lock on other cache's to the point the cache get's updated and notifies others of the change. This is eventually going into a dead lock situation, while removing. Is there any strategy I should follow while updating or removing from cache's.   Hi All, We're evaluating MySQL and PostgreSQL for building our indic language web application which will use MySQL or PostgreSQL. One of my colleagues mentioned that MySQL had issues with i18n. I mostly come from the Oracle world and although I've played a lil with MySQL, I don't know enough to know that there are issues with its i18n support. Does anyone know issues with MySQL's i18n support and if PostgreSQL would be better placed for building an application with indic language support(kannada, telugu, tamil, etc) ? Just so you know, we're going to be using J2EE to build this application and we will be using JDBC drivers to access the DB. • How to keep an Hibernate's Session open until the page is rendered

  I'm having the following problem: I'm using Oracle ADF for the view and controller of my app. With OpenSessionInViewFilter, I intercept the request and open an Hibernate's Session, and it is closed as soon as the bean's method finishes. What I need is to keep the Session opened until the page is rendered, because in my JSP y use the lazy attributes of the object i load from the DB. For example: When I enter index.jspx the IndexBean#main() is executed: public class IndexBean{ private DBObject myDBObject; public String main(){ this.myDBObject = this.myDAO.loadObjectFromDB(); return null; } } in index.jspx I have: ... <af:inputText value="#{myDBObject.lazyAttribute}" /> ...
