  • Retrieving varbinary output from a query in sql server into classic ASP

    Hi, I'm trying to retrieve a varbinary output value from a query running on SQL Server 2005 into Classic ASP. The ASP execution just fails when it comes to part of code that is simply taking a varbinary output into a string. So I guess we gotta handle it some other way. Actually, I'm trying to set (sp_setapprole) and unset (sp_unsetapprole) application roles for a database connection. First I'd set the approle, then I'd run my required queries and finally unset the approle. During unsetting is when I need the cookie (varbinary) value in my ASP code so that I can create a query like 'exec sp_unsetapprole @cookie'. Well at this stage, I don't have the cookie (varbinary) value. The reason I'm doing this is I used to get 'sp_setapprole was not invoked correctly' error when trying to set app roles. I've disabled pooling by appending 'OLE DB Services = -2;Pooling=False' into my connection string. I know pooling helps performance wise but here I'm facing big problems. Please help me out to retrieve a varbinary value into an classic ASP file or suggest a way to set & unset app roles. Either way solutions are appreciated. Thanks, Nandagopal

    I'm having trouble getting a Java Applet to communicate with the Javascript code on the page the applet is hosted on. It works sometimes, but othertimes it throws an obscure exception, that googling for has not turned up any useful information, besides a few Java bug reports that were never resolved (thanks Sun). Note that it is intermittent. Often it works, but sometimes it does not, using the same exact code.   • Returning UTF-8 from a web service

    Previous: Returning info from a Web Service I thought the previous answer made 100% sense, and I though I was out of the woods, but it still fails. An app I'm working with still seems to think what is being returned from the web service is ASCII encoded. Debugging it shows: <Envelope><Body><ReturnOneResponse><ReturnOneResult>&lt;xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"&gt;&lt;Entry&gt;&lt;Symbol&gt;PACR&lt;/Symbol&gt;&lt;Company&gt;Pacer International, Inc.&lt;/Company&gt;&lt;MarketCap&gt;$229.0M&lt;/MarketCap&gt;&lt;PE&gt;18.7&lt;/PE&gt;&lt;Price&gt;6.56&lt;/Price&gt;&lt;Change&gt;0.42&lt;/Change&gt;&lt;PctChange&gt;6.84%&lt;/PctChange&gt;&lt;YTDChange&gt;107.59%&lt;/YTDChange&gt;&lt;/Entry&gt;</ReturnOneResult></ReturnOneResponse></Body></Envelope> So everything being returned from the web service seems to be changed into ASCII, and seems to refuse to read as UTF-8. Since my previous code in the above link, I also changed my string invocation: string value = @""; Still, that didn't help. Any other ideas?

Doing functional testing of view model, I can mock service proxy to ensure methods are called on the proxy, but how can I ensure that callback method is called as well? With RhinoMocks I can test that events are handled and event raise events on the mocked object, but how can I test callbacks?   • How to check whether a user belongs to an AD group and nested groups?

    hi guys, I have an ASP.NET 3.5 application using Windows Authentication and implementing our own RoleProvider. Problem is we want to restrict access to a set of pages to a few thousand users and rathern than inputing all of those one by one we found out they belong to an AD group. The answer is simple if the common group we are checking membership against the particular user is a direct member of it but the problem I'm having is that if the group is a member of another group and then subsequently member of another group then my code always returns false. For example: Say we want to check whether User is a member of group E, but User is not a direct member of *E", she is a member of "A" which a member of "B" which indeed is a member of E, therefore User is a member of *E" One of the solutions we have is very slow, although it gives the correct answer using (var context = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain)) { using (var group = GroupPrincipal.FindByIdentity(context, IdentityType.Name, "DL-COOL-USERS")) { var users = group.GetMembers(true); // recursively enumerate return users.Any(a => a.Name == "userName"); } } The original solution and what I was trying to get to work, using .NET 3.5 System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement and it does work when users are direct members of the group in question is as follows: public bool IsUserInGroup(string userName, string groupName) { var cxt = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain, "DOMAIN"); var user = UserPrincipal.FindByIdentity(cxt, IdentityType.SamAccountName, userName); if (user == null) { return false; } var group = GroupPrincipal.FindByIdentity(cxt, groupName); if (group == null) { return false; } return user.IsMemberOf(group); } The bottom line is, we need to check for membership even though the groups are nested in many levels down.   • Trouble getting NSString from NSDictionary key into UILabel

    I'm attempting to put the value associated with the key called "duration" into a UILabel but I'm getting a blank or "(null)" result showing up in the UILabel. My NSDictionary object with its keys seems to be logging as being full of the data and keys I think I want, as such: the content of thisRecordingsStats is { "12:48:25 AM, April 25" = { FILEPATH = "/Users/brian/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/3.1.3/Applications/97256A91-FC47-4353-AD01-15CD494060DD/Documents/12:48:25 AM, April 25.aif"; duration = "00:04"; applesCountString = 0; ...and so on. Here's the code where I'm trying to put the NSString into the UILabel: cell.durationLabel.text = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@",[thisRecordingsStats objectForKey:@"duration"]]; I've also tried these other permutations: cell.durationLabel.text = [thisRecordingsStats objectForKey:@"duration"]; and I've also tried this tag-based approach: label = (UILabel *)[cell viewWithTag:8]; label.text = [[thisRecordingsStats objectForKey:@"duration"] objectAtIndex:1]; and: UILabel *label; label = (UILabel *)[cell viewWithTag:8]; label.text = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@",[[thisRecordingsStats objectForKey:@"duration"] objectAtIndex:1]]; I've also tried creating a string from the key's paired value and see a "(null)" value or blankness using that too.   • Using Entity Framework with an SQL Compact Private Installation

    I am using Entity Framework 4 in a desktop application with SQL Compact. I want to use a private installation of SQL Compact with my application, so that my installer can install SQL Compact without giving the user a second installation to do. It also avoids versioning hassles down the road. My development machine has SQL Compact 3.5 SP1 installed as a public installation, so my app runs fine there, as one would expect. But it's not running on my test machine, which does not have SQL Compact installed. I get this error: The specified store provider cannot be found in the configuration, or is not valid. I know some people have had difficulty with SQL Compact private installations, but I have used them for a while, and I really like them. Unfortunately, my regular private installation approach isn't working. I have checked the version numbers on my SQL CE files, and they are all 3.8.8078.0, which is the SP2 RC version. Here are the files I have included in my private installation: sqlcecompact35.dll sqlceer35EN.dll sqlceme35.dll sqlceqp35.dll sqlcese35.dll System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll System.Data.SqlServerCe.Entity.dll I have added a reference to System.Data.SqlServerCe to my project, and I have verified that all of the files listed above are being copied to the application folder on the installation machine.   • java Processbuilder - exec a file which is not in path on OS X

    Okay i'm trying to make ChucK available in exported Processing sketches, i.e. if i export an app from Processing, the ChucK VM binary will be executed from inside the app. So as a user of said app you don't need to worry about ChucK being in your path at all. I've tried several variations, but I seem unable to get the correct join syntax. Is this simply a case of a query that is too complicated for LINQ? Can it be done using nested queries some how? The purpose of the query is to find the most recently updated posts i.e. replying to a post would bump it to the top of the list. Replies are defined by the ParentID column, which is self-referencing.

  • Parallel WCF calls to multiple servers

    I have a WCF service (the same one) running on multiple servers, and I'd like to call all instances in parallel from a single client. I'm using ChannelFactory and the interface (contract) to call the service. Each service has a local <endpoint> client defined in the .config file. What I'm trying to do is build some kind of generic framework to avoid code duplication. For example a synchronous call in a single thread looks something like this: Dim remoteName As String = "endpointName1" Dim svcProxy As ChannelFactory(Of IMyService) = New ChannelFactory(Of IMyService)(remoteName) Try svcProxy.Open() Dim svc As IMyService = svcProxy.CreateChannel() nodeResult = svc.TestRemote("foo") Finally svcProxy.Close() End Try The part I'm having difficulty with is how to specify and actually invoke the actual remote method (eg "TestRemote") without having to duplicate the above code, and all the thread-related stuff that invokes that, for each method. In the end, I'd like to be able to write code along the lines of (consider this psuedo code): Dim results as Dictionary(Of Node, ExpectedReturnType) results = ParallelInvoke(IMyService.SomeMethod, parameter1, parameter2) where ParallelInvoke() will take the method as an argument, as well as the parameters (paramArray or object() .. whatever) and then go run the request on each remote node, block until they all return an answer or timeout, and then return the results into a Dictionary with the key as the node, and the value as whatever value it returned. I can then (depending on the method) pick out the single value I need, or aggregate all the values from each server together, etc. I'm pretty sure I can do this using reflection and InvokeMember(), but that requires passing the method as a string (which can lead to errors like calling a non-existing method that can't be caught at compile time), so I'd like to see if there is a cleaner way to do this. The first click always results 0 (as expected). but from the second click, the result is unpredictable (but the sequence is still in order, e.g. 3, 4, 5, 10, 14, 15, ....) If I click the button fast enough, I was able to get the result in continuous order (0,1,2,3,4,....) but sometimes it produces more than 2 same numbers (e.g. 0,1,2,3,3,3,4,5,6,6,6,7,8,9,...)   • Writing files in App_Data causes tempdata to be null

    I have a small asp.net MVC 1 web app that can store files and create directories in the App_Data directory. When the write operation succeeds, I add a message to the tempdata and do a redirectToRoute. The problem is that the tempdata is null when the action is executed. If i write the files in a directory outside of the web applications root directory, the tempdata is not null and everything works correctly. Any ideas why writing in the app_data seems to clear the tempdata ? edit: if DRS.Logic.Repository.Manager.CreateFile(path, hpf, comment) writes in the App_Data, TempData will be null in the action being redirected to. if it is a directory out of the web app root it is fine. No exceptions are being thrown.     Having a bit of difficulty getting my input to print once a white space character is inputted. So far, i have it to display the uppercase/lowercase of the input but once i enter a string it doesnt read whats after the white space character. any suggestions?     Hi, I have a menu where I bind data through: XmlDataSource xmlData = new XmlDataSource(); xmlData.DataFile = String.Format(@"{0}{1}\Navigation.xml", getXmlPath(), getLanguage()); xmlData.XPath = @"/Items/Item"; TopNavigation.DataSource = xmlData; TopNavigation.DataBind(); The problem is when my xml has special characters, since I use a lot of french words.     I have the following schema, which I use to ensure that a person's PhoneNumber and PhoneNumberType (Home, Work, etc.) is not longer than 10 characters. However, I want to improve this schema so that PhoneNumberType is not required if a PhoneNumber is not provided, but is required if the PhoneNumber is provided.     I'm starting to get my feet wet in the latest Google Web Toolkit using the Eclipse plugin on OS X 10.5.8. So far I've been able to get the client up and running, which is great. The server, though, is a different matter. I'm trying to link to a .jar file that has some classes I want to use in a server ServiceImpl class, but it seems to have glommed onto a previous iteration of the .jar - I've added a method, rebuilt the jar, removed the jar from the libraries tab on the GWT project's build path (as well as on the exports) and reincluded the jar. No luck - I'm still getting: [WARN] Exception while dispatching incoming RPC call com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.UnexpectedException: Service method 'public abstract org.gwtapplication.client.LWDocument org.gwtapplication.client.DocumentService.getDocument()' threw an unexpected exception: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.externalmodel.MyReallyValidClass.toSomething()Ljava/lang/String; at com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.RPC.encodeResponseForFailure(RPC.java:378) at com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.RPC.invokeAndEncodeResponse(RPC.java:581) ...     Hi, I' still newby to this so I'll try to explain what I'm doing. Basically what I want is to load a dropdownlist depending on the value of a previous one, and I want it to load the data and appear when the other one is changed. I've been going round and round debugging and making tests but I can't make it work, and it is suppossed to be a simple thing, but I'm missing something. I have commented the for loop because I'm not quite sure if that's the way you access the data, because I've not been able to make it work when it finds records. Can anyone help me?
