  hi everybody, I am new in LINQtoXML. I want to use XElement.Load("") Method. but the compiler can't find my file. can you help me to write correct path for my XML file? • Problem with ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript in WebControl nested in UpdatePanel

  Hello, I am having what I believe should be a fairly simple problem, but for the life of me I cannot see my problem. The problem is related to ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript, something I have used many times before. The scenario I have is that I have a custom web control that has been inserted into a page. The control (and one or two others) are nested inside an UpdatePanel. They are inserted onto the page onto a PlaceHolder: <asp:UpdatePanel ID="pnlAjax" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> <asp:PlaceHolder ID="placeholder" runat="server"> </asp:PlaceHolder> ... protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e){ placeholder.Controls.Add(Factory.CreateControl()); base.OnInit(e); } This is the only update panel on the page. The control requires some initial javascript be run for it to work correctly. The control calls: ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this, GetType(), Guid.NewGuid().ToString(), script, true); and I have also tried: ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(Page, Page.GetType(), Guid.NewGuid().ToString(), script, true); The problem is that the script runs correctly when the page is first displayed, but does not re-run after a partial postback. I have tried the following: Calling RegisterStartupScript from CreateChildControls Calling RegisterStartupScript from OnLoad / OnPreRender Using different combinations of parameters for the first two parameters (in the example above the Control is Page and Type is GetType(), but I have tried using the control itself, etc). I have tried using persistent and new ids (not that I believe this should have a major impact either way). I have used a few breakpoints and so have verified that the Register line is being called correctly. The only thing I have not tried is using the UpdatePanel itself as the Control and Type, as I do not believe the control should be aware of the update panel (and in any case there does not seem to be a good way of getting the update panel?). Can anyone see what I might be doing wrong in the above? Thanks :)

• How can I set initial values when using Silverlight DataForm and .Net RIA Services DomainDataSource?

  I'm experimenting with .Net RIA and Silverlight, I have a few of related entities; Client, Project and Job, a Client has many Projects, and a Project has many Jobs. In the Silverlight app, I'm uisng a DomainDataSource, and DataForm controls to perform the CRUD operations. When a Client is selected a list of projects appears, at which point the user can add a new project for that client. I'd like to be able to fill in the value for client automatically, but there doesn't seem to be any way to do that, while there is an AddingNewItem event on the DataForm control, it seems to fire before the DataForm has an instance of the new object and I'm not sure trawling through the ChangeSet from the DomainDataSource SubmittingChanges event is the best way to do this. I would of thought this would of been an obvious feature... anyone know the best way to achieve this functionality?

• Vb.Net web browser control not firing document complete with AJAX web site.

  The VB.Net desktop app uses the IE browser control to navigate the web. When a normal page loads the document_complete event fires and I can read the resulting page and go from there. The issue I am having is that the page I am driving is written with AJAX, so the document complete event never fires. Furthermore, when you view the source of the page after it loaded a new portion via AJAX, it hasn't change. How are people handling this? What are my options?

• Error using Dynamic Data Filtering: missing datasource

  I am trying to use the ASP.NET Dynamic Data Filtering project, but I'm running into a problem during the configuration. I'm following the instructions on the author's blog, and everything works like described. Then it tells me to change the datasource using the designer view. I am told to select the "GridDataSource" in the "Configure data source" wizard. This option is not there though. I get all of the classes in my project, including the DataContext that was generated by Linq. When I choose "Show only DataContext objects", the dropdown ("Choose your context object:") is completely empty. When I turn of the checkbox and choose my DataContext class, I get asked which table I want and all that. But, as the whole purpose of a Dynamic Data site is NOT to use one single table, that's not much help. So I've looked at the instructions again and copied the resulting datasource from the example: <asp:DynamicLinqDataSource ID="GridDataSource" runat="server" EnableDelete="True" EnableUpdate="True"></asp:DynamicLinqDataSource> Which is exactly what I had, without the "WhereParameters" nodes in there. Now, when I run the list page however, I get an exception about a missing datasource from the filtering component. Of course when I remove the DynamicFilterRepeater, it works again. • C#.NET framework 3.5 SP1: satellite assemblies and FullTrust issues when the exe is on the network.

  Hi, I'm executing my .NET app from a network share. Since framework 3.5 SP1, and as explained here: http://blogs.msdn.com/shawnfa/archive/2008/05/12/fulltrust-on-the-localintranet.aspx, the main exe and all the DLLs located in the same folder (but not subfolders) are granted with FullTrust security policy. My problem is that I have subfolders for satellite assemblies with localized strings. Namely, I have: 1) FOLDER\APP.EXE 2) FOLDER\A whole bunch of DLLs 3) FOLDER\LANGUAGE1\Satellite assemblies 4) FOLDER\LANGUAGE2\Satellite assemblies 1 and 2 are automatically granted with FullTrust. 3 and 4 are not and my application is really slow because of that. Is there a way to grant 3 & 4 FullTrust security policy at runtime, since the application running has FullTrust? If not, is there a clean way to have satellite assemblies merged into only one DLL? • Redirect from URL with QueryString to the same URL without QueryString

  I have a page request with a QueryString, say http://www.xyz.net/Orders.aspx?OrderID=1. The page is displayed in a browser. Now there is an asp:LinkButton on the page which should enable the user to open the page without the QueryString (as if he had entered http://www.xyz.net/Orders.aspx directly in the browser's address bar). I had two ideas: 1) Use the PostBackUrl attribute of the LinkButton: <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton1" runat="server" Text="Select" PostBackUrl="~/Orders.aspx" /> 2) Use "RedirectUrl" in an event handler: <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton1" runat="server" Text="Select" OnClick="LinkButton1_Click" /> ...and... protected void LinkButton1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Response.Redirect("~/Orders.aspx"); } In both cases the browser's address bar shows http://www.xyz.net/Orders.aspx without the QueryString, as I like to have it. But in the first case the page does not change at all. But it should, because I'm evaluating the QueryString in code-behind and control the appearance of the page depending on whether a QueryString exists or not. The second option works as intended. If I am not wrong the second option requires an additional roundtrip: Browser sends request to server Event handler on server side sends Redirect URL to browser Browser sends again request to the server, but with the new URL Server sends new requested page to browser Is this correct at all? Whereas the first option omits the first two steps in the list above, thus saving the additional roundtrip and resulting in: Browser sends request to the server, but with the new URL (the PostbackURL specified in the LinkButton) Server sends new requested page to browser But, as said, the result isn't the same. I'm sure my try to explain the differences between the two options is wrong somewhere. But I don't know where exactly. Can someone explain what's really the difference? • Can I get command line arguments of other processes from .NET/C#?

  I have a project where I have multiple instances of an app running, each of which was started with different command line arguments. I'd like to have a way to click a button from one of those instances which then shuts down all of the instances and starts them back up again with the same command line arguments. I can get the processes themselves easily enough through Process.GetProcessesByName(), but whenever I do, the StartInfo.Arguments property is always an empty string. It looks like maybe that property is only valid before starting a process. This question had some suggestions, but they're all in native code, and I'd like to do this directly from .NET. Any suggestions?

  Hi, I have a simple ASP page with databound grid (bound to an object source). The grid is within the page of a wizard and has a 'select' checkbox for each row. In one stage of the wizard, I bind the GridView: protected void Wizard1_NextButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e) { ... // Bind and display matches GridViewMatches.EnableViewState = true; GridViewMatches.DataSource = getEmailRecipients(); GridViewMatches.DataBind(); And when the finish button is clicked, I iterate through the rows and check what's selected: protected void Wizard1_FinishButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e) { // Set the selected values, depending on the checkboxes on the grid. foreach (GridViewRow gr in GridViewMatches.Rows) { Int32 personID = Convert.ToInt32(gr.Cells[0].Text); CheckBox selected = (CheckBox) gr.Cells[1].FindControl("CheckBoxSelectedToSend"); But at this stage GridViewMatches.Rows.Count = 0! I don't re-bind the grid, I shouldn't need to, right? I expect the view-state to maintain the state. (Also, if I do rebind the grid, my selection checkboxes will be cleared) NB: This page also dynamically adds user controls in OnInit method. I have heard that it might mess with the view state, but as far as I can tell, I am doing it correctly and the viewstate for those added controls seems to work (values are persisted between postbacks) Thanks a lot in advance for any help! I wondered if the asp engine was databinding the grid during the page lifecycle to a datasource that was not yet defined. (In a test page, the GridView is 'automatically' databound'. • webclient methods not available to my Silverlight application

  Trying to do basic webclient data pull in C#, and the methods are not available in visualstudio, and the code is not compiling. //snip WebClient client = new WebClient(); byte[] resp = client.DownloadData(url); //snip Error 1 'System.Net.WebClient' does not contain a definition for 'DownloadData' and no extension method 'DownloadData' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Net.WebClient' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) C:\Users\Michael\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\search2\search2\MainPage.xaml.cs I'm doing this in a c# file for a XAML/Silverlight project, but can't imagine why that would make a difference. I can not find any reference to this issue on the web, and I had something similar to this working last month, but in a regular ASP.NET page, not in a Silverlight app.

• why does Integrated Windows Authentication fail when clients access off the network

  My background is not with web applications so this problem is hard for me to explain easily. First I'll try to describe the setup. Client setup:-Only browser that is effected is IE 6-8 (Firefox, chrome, opera, and safari all work fine) -A user will try to access our web application from a company laptop that is not connected to our network. -This machine will be a member of our workgroup and have the company DNS listed as a trusted intranet site. (to which the application in question would be a member) -The security logon mode is set to Automatic Logon only in intranet zone only, and IWA authentication is enabled on the clients browser.Server setup:-Windows server 2003 fp2-The application will first redirect to an Authorization asp page which has anonymous access disabled and IWA enabled in IIS.what should happen is that, since the client is not currently on the network, when this page is called it should prompt the user for network credentials. But with IE, instead of prompting, the user gets a page cannot be displayed error because the IIS manager is denying access to the asp page. If the company DNS is removed from the trusted intranet site list then it prompts correctly but disables single sign on the next time that computer is connected to the network or vpn. My assumption is that since IE uses IWA and the site is listed as an internal site, when no network is found IE just sends nulls to the server attempting to authenticate which is swiftly punted back. Other browsers do not have security zones so when network credentials are not present the server prompts for them. Is there a way to get around this so that our clients can keep the company DNS in the intranet zone but still have the server prompt for credentials when not on the network? Any attempt to allow for anonymous access on the asp page, as far as I know, will cause AUTH_USER to return null and again break SSO. I realize this is slightly rambling so I will do my best to clarify and questions you guys might have. Thanks in advance.

  According to Obtain client MAC address in ASP.NET Application, it is not possible. I am not entirely convinced because whenever I connect to Tim Hortons WiFi, my MAC address is known. Occasionally, the network is slow and I see this URL like this before being redirected to the Connect page: http://timhortonswifi.com/cp/tdl3/index.asp ?cmd=login &switchip=172.30.129.73 &mac=60:6c:66:17:1a:83 &ip=10.40.66.229 &essid=Tim%20Hortons%20WiFi &apname=TDL-ON-NEP-02177-WAP1 &apgroup=02177 &url=http%3A%2F%2Fweather%2Egc%2Eca%2Fcity%2Fpages%2Fon-72_metric_e%2Ehtml So according to this URL, the site knows the IP address of the router, my MAC address, the IP address assigned to my device by the router, the network SSID, some other pieces of information, and the URL I was trying to access prior to connecting. There's two options: Tim Hortons WiFi Basic and Tim Hortons WiFi Plus, where the "Plus" option allows me to connect to any Tim Hortons WiFi access point in Canada automatically with this device. Registration requires an email address, so I'm assuming this is possible by checking the MAC address and storing it in a database that routers ping upon connection. More info here. According to the extension of this page, I can safely assume it is ASP. How are they obtaining this information?

I'm trying to extend this at the moment to listen for HTTPS too (refer this question) however I'm wondering if I'm trying to tackle something that is not possible...That is if this code works by listening for the HTTPS request (using HttpListener) and then copying headers & content across to a new HttpWebRequest, is this flawed as it may not be able to decrypt the request to get the content? But then normal proxy servers obviously can proxy HTTPS, so I guess perhaps it will work because it will just copy across the encrypted content?

• Where can I find a nice .NET Tab Control for free?

  I'm doing this application in C# using the free Krypton Toolkit but the Krypton Navigator is a paid product which is rather expensive for me and this application is being developed on my free time and it will be available to the public for free. So, I'm looking for a free control to integrate better into my Krypton application because the default one doesn't quite fit and it will be different depending on the OS version... Any suggestions? P.S: I know I could owner-draw it but I'm trying not to have that kind of work... I prefer something already done if it exists for free. • PHP Session when using desktop app

  In this question I asked how to POST to a php file form a vb.net app: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2615335/post-to-webpage-in-vb-net-win-forms-desktop-not-asp-net So now I've logged in the user user by posting their username and password to the php file, the php file then does security/checks they exist/etc and if both username and password are correct is stores the user ID in a session variable. Now if the vb.net app tries to download data off a page which needs the user to logged in, it checks this by doing: if (!isset($_SESSION['uid'])) { header("Location: index.php"); } However after having logged correctly in the app the session variable is not set. How does session work with a vb.net app like this? When the user logs in successfully should I download the user id and keep it in the vb.net app and then post it to each page that requires authentication?

  Hi, I've created an index with various bits of data for each document I've added, each document can differ in it field name. Later on, when I come to search the index I need to query it with exact field/ values - for example: FieldName1 = X AND FieldName2 = Y AND FieldName3 = Z What's the best way of constructing the following using Lucene .NET: What analyser is best to use for this exact match type? Upon retrieving a match, I only need one specific field to be returned (which I add to each document) - should this be the only one stored? Later on I'll need to support keyword searching (so a field can have a list of values and I'll need to do a partial match). The fields and values come from a Dictionary<string, string>. It's not user input, it's constructed from code. Thanks, Kieron

I always held MS coders in fairly high regard and while I may not have agreed with all of their decisions, I always respected their reasoning. So - is there a good reason for code like this that I'm missing, or was this code extract just put together by a shitty developer? I'm hoping there is a good reason, and I'm just blindly missing it.
