• Track a Adobe Flash app hosted on multiple domains with Google Analytics

  I'm working on a flash app that's gonna be distributed to more and more partners (and obviously domains). It needs to be tracked aggregated and also separately. I implemented Google Analytics using gaforflash, tracking virtual pageviews and events inside the flash app. What I want to achieve: View an aggregated report of all partners. Identify the partner not by the domain (where the flash is used), but by a partnerID. Each partner needs access to the report of his domain. (no admin rights needed) I came up with this solution: Using only one "Web property" in Google Analytics. UA-XXXXXX-4 .example.com Set a custom/virtual hostname per partner. (GA's "utmhn" parameter) partner1.example.com partner2.example.com Create a profile for each partner, setting the filter to include only the relevant "subdomain" Problems that came up: The gaforflash library doesn't support overriding the host name. Possible workaround: The gaforflash source code is available, so I could add the functionality. Any goal from the "master" profile is not copied to the partners profile. profile 1: include traffic from hostname ^partner1\. profile 2: include traffic from hostname ^partner2\. Is it (very) bad to fake the hostname? Are there better approaches? Or what improvements could you think of? UPDATE: I'm looking primarily for a solid data structure inside Google Analytics regardless of the flash implementation. The only limitations: We need an aggregated view across all partners Our partners need to have access to their subset of data We want to identify the partner by a custom partnerID, not the domain

• Running CGI With Perl under Apache Permission Problem

  I have the following entry under apache2.conf in my Debian box. AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl Options +ExecCGI ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /var/www/mychosendir/cgi-bin/ Then I have a perl cgi script stored under these directories and permissions: nvs@somename:/var/www/mychosendir$ ls -lhR .: total 12K drwxr-xr-x 2 nvs nvs 4.0K 2010-04-21 13:42 cgi-bin ./cgi-bin: total 4.0K -rwxr-xr-x 1 nvs nvs 90 2010-04-21 13:40 test.cgi However when I tried to access it in the web browser: http://myhost.com/mychosendir/cgi-bin/test.cgi They gave me this error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /mychosendir/cgi-bin/test.cgi on this server. • MySQL 5.5 on Windows server is horribly slow

  I have had no luck getting MySQL 5.5 to be as fast as 5.1 or MariaDB on the exact same hardware/database/environment under Windows server 2003R2 or 2008R2. My benchmarks from our application: MySQL 5.5 + CentOS 5.2 (XenServer Virtual) = 28 seconds (box is "busy" not buried) MariaDB (5.1) + Windows 2003 (Physical box) = 130 seconds (box is 2% busy) MySQL 5.1 + Windows 2003 (Physical box) = 170 seconds (box is 2% busy) MySQL 5.5 + Windows 2003 (Physical box) = 305 seconds (As high as 600 seconds...) (box is 2% busy) The only difference between these runs is the removal of skip-locking and the running of mysql_upgrade.exe to update some tables for stored procs on 5.5. Yes, I know it's a release candidate, I'm feeding that back to MySQL as well. No slow queries are logged, it doesn't think it's being slow, it just is. I'm going to start tearing into the queries themselves to see if the INSERT/SELECT plans have gone buggo on 5.5. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

• How to tell Vim to extend the background color to the whole screen?

  I have an issue with the Vim color schemes: The background color does not fill the whole screen. For example, in the "blue" color scheme the whole screen should turn blue. Instead, the blue background only extends to the end of each line. Is this a setting in the console I'm missing or is this an issue with my vim default settings? I'm only having this issue with Ubuntu 10.10. echo $TERM outputs xterm-color. [Update]: To eliminate error sources my minimal ~/.vimrc looks like this: filetype plugin on colorscheme blue syntax on /etc/vim/vimrc contains the unchanged defaults of Ubuntu

• TDC: The Developer's Conference Day One

  The Developer's Conference (TDC) kicked off Wednesday in São Paulo, Brazil. With over 3000 developers in attendance over five days, it is the premier multi-community developer conference in Brazil, organized by Globalcode. Yara Senger, one of the organizers said, "We like to say multi-community rather than multi-technology because it is interesting and benefical when various communities get together. They learn so much from each other!" TDC includes tracks on Java and several other technologies, including SOA, Python, Ruby, mobile and digital TV. In the mobile track, developers who create a Java ME app will get a Nokia S40 phone!New this year at TDC is the Java University track, sponsored by Oracle.  It is aimed at university students and professionals who are new to Java. The lectures are introductory level, with an educational focus and practical exercises. The Java track and other tracks, such as SOA, mobile and Digital TV, are getting lots of help from the expertise of Brazilian JUGS members. Thanks to GoJava, JavaBahia, JavaNoroeste and SouJava!Carlos Fernando, one of the coordinators on the Digital TV track, said "My goal is to teach developers the basics of digital TV, and show them the tools used to build interactive TV applications." Fernando explained the concept of "the second screen:" that many people watch TV and have second smart device (tablet or smartphone) with them, and this creates many opportunities for developers. For example, while watching TV, a viewer can get extra content (interviews, behind the scenes) on their tablet. More interestingly, while watching their favorite TV show a viewer likes an outfit one of the actors is wearing, their smartphone can tell them where they can buy it nearby, or they can order it online immediately. Fernando exclaimed, "The opportunities for developers are nearly infinite in the area of digital TV!" At the TDC opening keynote, Debora Palermo, Oracle University country manager for Brazil, reminded attendees that Java is present in many devices, from simple to complex, and knowledge of this platform can open many doors in the labor market. She explained Oracle's Workforce Development Program (WDP), managed by Oracle University, which allows educational institutions to deliver Oracle training. WDP allows for easy and low-cost access to Oracle training in local communities across the world. "Oracle University is committed to creating the next generation of Java developers, and WDP can make that happen," Palermo said. As of March 2012, Oracle University is partnering with Globalcode to offer WDP. • How to remove a partition on a USB drive?

  I got a free promotional USB stick that I want to format for my own purposes. When I inserted it, it automatically opened a browser and launched a web site. I have since disabled autoplay on this computer so that nothing launches when the stick is inserted. But it still shows up as two separate drives, and one of them is a "CD Drive" that I can't format. How can a USB stick contain a "CD Drive?" And more to the point, how can I remove this partition using Windows XP or Ubuntu? Update I previously asked for an XP solution, but finding none, I have tried Ubuntu, also without success. Gparted doesn't see the "CD" portion as a device at all, and from bash, any chmod changes I try tell me that the file system is read-only. Any ideas?

• iPhoto fails to see my new iPhone 3Gs

  Two weeks ago I have bought the new iPhone 3Gs. It synced like charm with iTunes and I was happy until a couple of days ago when I noticed that there was absolutely no way I could get any photos from the phone to my mac, as it doesn't even appear in the device list. Long story short — i have even tried resetting Leopard completely from scratch (and formatting the HD beforehand). Still no joy. Leopard Snow 10.6.1 absolutely clean install with all updates iPhone 3Gs 3.1.2 - syncs like charm with iTunes, but NOT iPhoto Mac Book Air Any help will be greatly appreciated! update: It works with my old iphone, why can't the 3Gs work?

• USB hard drive doesn't graceful power off after eject on Windows 7

  I have a couple of Seagate FreeAgent Go external USB hard drives and would like them to gracefully power off after ejecting in Windows 7. With Windows XP a few seconds after they are ejected they gracefully power off. When ejecting them on Windows 7 they just stay on and have to be physically disconnected before they lose power. I have checked the hard drive removal policy and it is set to quick removal. I have also looked in the Seagate forums but I couldn't find any info on this so I thought I'd ask the SuperUser community on any ideas why the difference and how to get the same behaviour in Windows 7 as in XP? Update: I am finding that this also happens with USB thumb drives as well. My current theory is that there were changes to the driver model with Vista/Win 7 that haven't been reflected in the device drivers yet. So things that worked under XP don't under Win7 as the drivers haven't been updated for the new model. Does that sound right?

• High server load - [jbd2/md1-8] using 99.99% IO

  I've been having spike in load over the last week. This usually occurs once or twice a day. I've managed to identify from iotop that [jbd2/md1-8] is using 99.99 % IO. During the high load times there is no high traffic to the server. Server specs are: AMD Opteron 8 core 16 GB RAM 2x2.000 GB 7.200 RPM HDD Software Raid 1 Cloudlinux + Cpanel Mysql is properly tuned Apart from the spikes, the load usually is around 0.80 at most. I've searched around but can't find what [jbd2/md1-8] does exactly. Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know a possible solution? Thank you. • cURL works but PHP cURL fails to internet [migrated]

  Trying to diagnose an issue using PHP to cURL to an Internet location on a RedHat Linux server. cURL is installed and working, and: <?php var_dump(curl_version()); ?> shows all the correct information in the output. The issue is I can use PHP to cURL to localhost on the box itself, but not the Internet (see below). Normally I'd suspect the firewall, but I can cURL from the command line to the Internet without a problem. The box can also update it's own software packages, etc. What am I missing? • speeding up cvs pserver over WAN

  I have a remote location with 5 developers that are using a CVS (pserver) repository in main office via WAN, but the bandwidth i have is only a couple of hundred kbps so CVS operations are fairly slow. Is there any way to speed this up? I can rsync over a local copy of the CVS root(s) every couple of minutes, so this can handle the updates, but obviously not the commits. Is there any way to say to CVS to update from one server, but push to another one? Any other ideas?

• Postfix performance

  Running postfix on ubuntu, sending alot of mail ( ~ 1 million messages ) per day. loads are extremly high but not much in terms of cpu and memory load. Anyone in a similiar situation and know how to remove the bottleneck? All mail on this server is outbound. I would have to assume the bottleneck is disk. I think it is queue shuffling, from incoming-active-deferred More details from questions: Server: Quad core Xeon(R) CPU E5405 @ 2.00GH with 4 GB ram Load average: 464.88, 489.11, 483.91, 4 cores. but the memory utilization and cpu is minimal Postfix instances between 16 - 32

• Multiple User VPN

  I am looking for a cheap or free solution to be able to connect multiple people via VPN to a host computer. Each person should not be able to see what the others are doing while logged in. Is this possible and if so where do I start my hunt? Aaron Update: I was not sure what server, was just thinking of doing it on say a win7 desktop. Just looking into having 2-3 users have access to a program without each seeing each other. Basically, I know nothing and want to know if this is a possibility for me. lol

• Writing to the UI with MonoDroid using RunOnUIThread

  I've been pulling my hair out over the past day or so trying to update the UI in my test app.  I was having problem after problem.  I finally got down to my base problem.  I could not write out to my TextView.  WTF could be causing that?  I can write to my UI in other parts of my app.  This is pure craziness.  I thought long and hard and nothing was coming to me.  Wait, the light bulb went on.  I am in the wrong thread.  Great, how do I write in the correct thread?  MonoDroid supports the entire AsyncTask set of objects, but this seemed like overkill.  I was reading and came across RunOnUIThread().......Bing..........The lightbulb has been invented...BlueStar Airlines (oh wait, wrong context). Anyway, here is what I needed:this.RunOnUiThread(() => TextViewControl.Text = "Hello World"); Enjoy!!!!!!!  Remember kiddies, running on the main ui for off device operations is bad, not as bad as crossing the streams bad, but bad as in trying to drive on a flat tire bad. It won't kill you, but it does keep you from getting anywhere.

Last weekend I was searching for almost 2 hours and could not find a single shop. The best way to enjoy this delicious Samosas in Chennai is to prepare them at home and thanks to this Vah Reh Vah for posting this video on YouTube with detailed instructions on preparation of Ulli Samosa. We will be trying out this recipe today evening. Update: We followed the instructions in the video and could not prepare the Somasa we were expecting. • Oracle Tutor: Are Documented Policies and Procedures Necessary?

  People refer to policies and procedures with a variety of expressions including business process documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), department operating procedures (DOPs), work instructions, specifications, and so on. For our purpose here, policies and procedures mean a set of documents that describe an organization's policies (rules) for operation and the procedures (containing tasks performed by individuals) to fulfill the policies. When an organization documents policies and procedures properly, they can be the strategic link between an organization's vision and its daily operations. Policies and procedures are often necessary because of some external requirement, such as environmental compliance or other governmental regulations. One example of an external requirement would be the American Sarbanes-Oxley Act, requiring full openness in accounting practices. Here are a few other examples of business issues that necessitate writing policies and procedures: Operational needs -- policies and procedures ensure fundamental processes are performed in a consistent way that meets the organization's needs. Risk management -- policies and procedures are identified by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) as a control activity needed to manage risk. Continuous improvement -- Procedures can improve processes by building important internal communication practices. Compliance -- Well-defined and documented processes (i.e. procedures, training materials) along with records that demonstrate process capability can demonstrate an effective internal control system compliant with regulations and standards. In addition to helping with the above business issues, policies and procedures can support the basic needs of employees and management. Well documented and easy to access policies and procedures: allow employees to understand their roles and responsibilities within predefined limits and to stay on the accepted path indentified by the organization's management provide clarity to the reader when dealing with accountability issues or activities that are of critical importance allow management to guide operations without constant intervention allow managers to control events in advance and prevent employees from making costly mistakes Can you think of another way organizations can meet the above needs of management and their employees in place of documented Policies and Procedures? • SFTP: file symlinks in a jailed (chrooted) directory

  I'm trying to set up sftp so that a few trusted people can access/edit/create some files. I have jailed a user into their home directory (/home/name) but have run into a problem. I want for them to also be able to access other parts of the VPS because it is also a game server, webhost, etc, and I want for them to be able to have full control of files outside their jailed directory. I tried making a symlink (ln -s) to the desired directory but it does not work, as expected. I tried (cp -rl) to the files that I wanted to give access and it worked -- they can edit the files in their directory and it changes the one stored outside of jail. BUT they cannot create new files (they can but it won't update outside of jail). I know I'm probably not doing this the "right way" but what can I do to do what I want?

• 12.04: Persistent Gimp 2.2 from Gimphoto or Gimpshop. Cannot install 2.8

  I have a very messed up installation of Gimp. Some time ago I installed Gimpshop or Gimphoto (can't really remember which) and it installed Gimp 2.2. Didn't work for me and tried to remove it. I've followed all Gimp remove, autoremove, clean, update and upgrade instructions I've found here to no avail. Now Software Center doesn't even show 2.8 but instead it does 2.6. I've installed and removed Gimp from terminal nth times. Running Gimp from the dash doesn't do anything but entering "Gimp" in the terminal prompt gives me a 2.2 installation screen. Cannot for the life of me find and remove the darn leftover garbage. How can I completely clean my system (12.04, fully updated today) from everything Gimp so I can give 2.8 a try? Anticipated apologies if this is a dupe but I've run through all messages with a Gimp tag and none has helped me. sudo apt-get install -f gives me 0,0,0,0. Thanks in advance.

The one I'm currently working on (CurrentDC) is a Windows 2008 R2 Server with Exchange 2010 on it. • Disable usage of console-kit-daemon in Ubuntu

  Hello, I administrate several Ubuntu 9.04 servers, and everytime I log in, I get the Landscape utility printout with server stats, etc. I really don't need this and it slows down my logins considerably. Can somebody please tell me how to disable message of the day as well as the landscape-sysin daemon ? I started tracking my logins using top, and when a user logs in, sshd shoots right up to 100% CPU usage, and I believe that landscape and the message of the day update daemon are the primary culprits. Does anybody else have any ideas as to what could be causing my horrible login times ?

• Revamped Google Webmaster Tools

  With a positive surprise I realized today that Google's Webmaster Tools had some minor overhauling and provide some more details than before. Most obvious are the changes on the dashboard where the Top Search Queries now provide information about impressions and clicktroughs instead of the rankings before. Only the links of the search expressions are missing. It seems that the Top search queries were in the focus of this update. The section is now spiced with detailed graphs about what happened during selectable periods on your site. Well, seems that the Webmaster Tools mimic a stripped-down version of Google Analytics... I was very pleased by the details that are offered when you click on a single query term. Really nice to see the search rankings and your responsible URLs at the same time. Before, you had to put two browser instances side-by-side to achieve this kind of overview. Personally, I like the approach to visualize statistics the way Google or other providers do. It gives you a quick and informative overview, and enables you to dig further into details about peaks and lows on your visits, page impressions or clickthroughs.
