• AWS instance went down for restart, came back up and has been "Waiting for network configuration... " for 12 hours

  What happened was about a month ago, I created a new instance, re-configured everything, and mounted the old instances drive to the new one. I then detached the old drive from the instance, but it was still mounted, so it errored out. Now, come the outage last month, and when the instance boots back up - the drive isn't there, because in the downtime, it dismounted. It hangs because the fstab is looking for it. I get word that the server's not up today, I check the logs, re-attach the drive and restart. Now I'm getting "Waiting for network configuration..." and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Some googling told me that I'm going to need to start from zero again, which I don't think is right. I created a new instance, which booted no problem, then I stopped it and swapped the two old drives into the new instance. Still the same error. Using the fresh AMI, it worked. I figure it's just a misconfigured Amazon file. I can attach the drive to a functioning instance on the same AMI and copy some files over, then try again - but I don't know where to even start or what files to check.

• I dropped my hp laptop and it has been on the startup repair screen for hours now--what can I do?

  I dropped my hp laptop (I have windows 7). There was a blue screen with the cursor. It took about an hour or two for the startup repair screen to appear. Then it says to wait at least an hour. I've been charging my laptop for around a day now and the same screen, with a bar with blue moving, is still there. It says it's fixing disc errors. What can I do to get to the windows screen with usernames and pictures/fix it? thanks.

• How to pass a reference to a JS function as an argument to an ExternalInterface call?

  Summary I want to be able to call a JavaScript function from a Flex app using ExternalInterface and pass a reference to a different JavaScript function as an argument. Base Example Given the following JavaScript: function foo(callback) { // ... do some stuff callback(); } function bar() { // do some stuff that should happen after a call to foo } I want to call foo from my flex app using ExternalInterface and pass a reference to bar as the callback. Why Really,foo is not my function (but, rather, FB.Connect.showBookmarkDialog), which due to restrictions on Facebook iframe apps can only be called on a button click. My button, for design reasons, is in the Flex app. Fortunately, it's possible to call ExternalInterface.call("FB.Connect.showBookmarkDialog", callback) to display the bookmark dialog. But, FB.Connect.showBookmarkDialog requires a JS callback so, should I want to receive a callback (which I do), I need to pass a reference to a JS function as the single argument. • Any way to pass parameters programmatically to an onclick function?

  I have an onclick function which performs several tasks. In another javascript function I do not have access to the context variables needed to perform these tasks. To get around this I have been simply calling the onclick function directly. The problem I have now is that I'd like to perform a task after an Ajax action in the onclick completes. Is there any way for me to pass a function to the onclick method of a link? What would the onclick attribute look like? e.g. something like this: <a id="link3" href="javascript:void(0);" onclick="function(callback) { X(a); Y(b); Z(c, callback); };">click me</a> Clicking on this would pass "undefined" as the callback, while I could also call it explicitly like this: document.getElementById("link3").onclick(function() { alert("Completed all tasks"); } ); Is something like this possible? Basically I want to be able to pass an optional parameter to the onclick method, but if it's absent I want it to behave as if there were just procedural code in the onclick.

  I am trying to connect to a remote sql database and simply run the "select @@servername" query in Powershell. I'm trying to do this without using integrated security. I've been struggling with "get-credential" and "invoke-sqlcmd", only to find (I think), that you can't pass the password from "get-credential" to another Powershell cmdlets. • jQuery UI Question. How to pass parameters to a function.

  I am pretty new to jQuery. How do I pass parameters to a function? I found some jQueryUI demos and I got it working except "view" link. I have a problem with passing parameters to and show them in modal popup windows. I have "Create New User" button and "View" link on the page. Clicking "Create New User" does pass the parameters and show them on modal popup window. ('12345' in User ID textbox, 'John Starks' in User Name textbox) $(function() { ... //Create New User button $('#create-user') .button() .click( function() { $('#dialog-form').dialog('open'); userId.val('12345'); userName.val('John Starks'); } ); }); But, "View" link doesn't work... • MySQL - How do I inner join sorting the joined data

  I'm trying to write a report which will join a person, their work, and their hourly wage at the time of work. I cannot seem to figure out the best way to join the person's cost when the date is less than the date of the work. Let's say a person cost $30 per hour at the start of the year then got a $10 raise o Feb 5 and another on Mar 1. 01/01/2010 $30.00 (per hour) 02/05/2010 $40.00 03/01/2010 $45.00 The person put in hours several days which span the rasies. 01/05/2010 10 hours (should be at $30/hr) 01/27/2010 5 hours (again at $30) 02/10/2010 10 hours (at $40/hr) 03/03/2010 5 hours (at $45/hr) I'm trying to write one SQL statement which will pull the hours, the cost per hour, and the hours*cost. The cost is the hourly rate last entered into the system so the cost date is less than the work date, ordered by cost date limit 1. SELECT person.id, person.name, work.hours, person_costs.value, work.hours * person_costs.value AS value FROM person INNER JOIN work ON (person.id = work.person_id) INNER JOIN person_costs ON (person.id = person_costs.person_id AND person_costs.date < work.date) WHERE person.id = 1234 ORDER BY work.date ASC The problem I'm having, the person_costs isn't ordered by date in descending order. It's pulling out "any" value (naturally sorted by record position) which matches the condition. How do I select the first person_cost value which is older than the work date? Thanks!

• How to pass binary data between two apps using Content Provider?

  I need to pass some binary data between two android apps using Content Provider (sharedUserId is not an option). I would prefer not to pass the data (a savegame stored as a file, small in size < 20k) as a file (ie. overriding openFile()) since this would necessitate some complicated temp-file scheme to cope with concurrency with several content provider accesses and a running game. I would like to read the file into memory under a mutex lock and then pass the binary array in the simplest way possible. How do I do this? It seems creating a file in memory is not a possibility due to the return type of openFile(). query() needs to return a Cursor. Using MatrixCursor is not possible since it applies toString() to all stored objects when reading it. What do I need to do? Implement a custom Cursor? This class has 30 abstract methods. Do I read the file, put it in a SQLite db and return the cursor? The complexity of this seemingly simple task is mindboggling.

  I have a background thread that generates a series of BitmapImage objects. Each time the background thread finishes generating a bitmap, I would like to show this bitmap to the user. The problem is figuring out how to pass the BitmapImage from the background thread to the UI thread. This is an MVVM project, so my view has an Image element: <Image Source="{Binding GeneratedImage}" /> My view-model has a property GeneratedImage: private BitmapImage _generatedImage; public BitmapImage GeneratedImage { get { return _generatedImage; } set { if (value == _generatedImage) return; _generatedImage= value; RaisePropertyChanged("GeneratedImage"); } } My view-model also has the code that creates the background thread: public void InitiateGenerateImages(List<Coordinate> coordinates) { ThreadStart generatorThreadStarter = delegate { GenerateImages(coordinates); }; var generatorThread = new Thread(generatorThreadStarter); generatorThread.ApartmentState = ApartmentState.STA; generatorThread.IsBackground = true; generatorThread.Start(); } private void GenerateImages(List<Coordinate> coordinates) { foreach (var coordinate in coordinates) { var backgroundThreadImage = GenerateImage(coordinate); // I'm stuck here...how do I pass this to the UI thread? } } I'd like to somehow pass backgroundThreadImage to the UI thread, where it will become uiThreadImage, then set GeneratedImage = uiThreadImage so the view can update. I've looked at some examples dealing with the WPF Dispatcher, but I can't seem to come up with an example that addresses this issue. Please advise.

  Hi, everybody. I need to turn HTML into equivalent Markdown-structured text. From what I could discover, I have only two good choices: Python: Aaron Swartz's html2text.py Ruby: Singpolyma's html2markdown.rb As I am programming in PHP, I need to pass the HTML code, call the Ruby/Python Script and receive the output back. I started creating a simple test just to know if my server was configured to run both languages. PHP code: echo exec('./hi.rb'); Ruby code: #!/usr/bin/ruby puts "Hello World!" It worked fine and I am ready to go to the next step. Unfortunately, all I know is that the function is Ruby works like this: HTML2Markdown.new('<h1>HTMLcode</h1>').to_s I don't know how to make PHP pass the string (with the HTML code) to Ruby nor how to make the ruby script receive the variable and pass it back to PHP (after have parsed it into Markdown). Believe it or not: I know less of Python. A folk made a similar question here ("how to call ruby script from php?") but with no practical information to my case. Any help would be a joy - thanks. But it doesn't work with other properties (those are not starting with the CCnet prefix) as LastChangeNumber or LastModificationDate. • Time tracking and payment registration architecture

  ?itle might be a little bit incorrect. :) Anyway, I'm building a software where employees input time they worked per day (work hours) and employer "pays" for this time. "Payment" is done outside this system, so employer just "confirms" (checkbox or something like this) which work hours are paid. So the question is - what is the best way (both UI and data storage wise) to implement this? At the moment I have this idea: Employee selects week and manually (with some Javascript helpers, like "fill the same time for all days") inputs work hours in every day of the week. Employer confirms payment the same way employee inputs data (selects week, confirms each day). Data is saved in DB as unix timestamp (one day per table row). Problem is 14 inputs (7 days * ("hours from" + "hours to" input), yet this approach seems kinda easy to implement. Maybe I'm overlooking something and this can be done differently and better? Maybe someone has any example of already working software?

• Error when Eclipse started and now my package explorer is empty!

  Friends, Just a quick introduction, I'm currently learning Java, using a combination of the Head First Java book and Eclipse. Everything was going well until tonight! When I started up Eclipse tonight, I saw an error message which I didn't pay attention to (I know! I know!) and acknowledged after which the project explorer was empty where it used to contain my Head First project! After a quick "google" I found the workspace.metadata.log and the errors are shown below. The version of Eclipse I am using is: 20100218-1602 and the only plugin that I use is egit.   Related Question- Ways to prepare your mind before coding?. I'm having a hard time taking my mind off of work projects in my personal time. It's not that I have a stressful job or tight deadlines; I love my job. I find that after spending the whole day writing code & trying to solve problems, I have an extremely hard time getting it out of my mind. I'm constantly thinking about the current project/problem/task all the time. It's keeping me from relaxing, and in the long run it just builds stress. Personal projects help to some extent, but mostly just to distract me. I still have source code bouncing around my head 16 hours a day. I'm still relatively new to the workforce. Have you struggled with this, perhaps as a young developer? How did you overcome it? Can anyone offer general advice on winding down after a long programming session?

• My python program always brings down my internet connection after several hours running, how do I debug and fix this problem?

  I'm writing a python script checking/monitoring several server/websites status(response time and similar stuff), it's a GUI program and I use separate thread to check different server/website, and the basic structure of each thread is using an infinite while loop to request that site every random time period(15 to 30 seconds), once there's changes in website/server each thread will start a new thread to do a thorough check(requesting more pages and similar stuff). The problem is, my internet connection always got blocked/jammed/messed up after several hours running of this script, the situation is, from my script side I got urlopen error timed out each time it's requesting a page, and from my FireFox browser side I cannot open any site. But the weird thing is, the moment I close my script my Internet connection got back on immediately which means now I can surf any site through my browser, so it must be the script causing all the problem. I've checked the program carefully and even use del to delete any connection once it's used, still get the same problem. I only use urllib2, urllib, mechanize to do network requests. Anybody knows why such thing happens? How do I debug this problem? Is there a tool or something to check my network status once such situation occurs? It's really bugging me for a while... By the way I'm behind a VPN, does it have something to do with this problem? Although I don't think so because my network always get back on once the script closed, and the VPN connection never drops(as it appears) during the whole process.

  is there a way to send multiple startKey/endKey pairs to a view, akin to the keys: [] array that can be posted for keys? the underlying problem - let's say my documents have "categories" and timestamps. if i want all documents in the "foo" category that have a timestamp that's within the last two hours, it's simple: function (doc) { emit([doc.category, doc.timestamp], null); } and then query as GET server:5894/.../myview?startKey=[foo, |now - 2 hours|]&endkey=[foo, |now|] the problem comes when i want something in categories foo or bar, within the last two hours. if i didn't care about time, i could just pull directly by key through the keys collection. unfortunately, i have no such option with ranges. what i ended up doing in the meantime is rounding the timestamp to two-hour blocks, and then multiplexing the query out: POST server:5894/.../myview keys=[[foo, 0 hours], [foo, 2 hours], [bar, 0 hours], [bar, 2 hours]] it works, but will get messy if i want to go back a large amount of time (in relationship to the blocksize)

  Hello All, I am using C# to send an email with an encrypted link. The encrypted portion of the link contains a time stamp that needs to be used to verify if the link is more than 48 hours old. How do I compare an old time to the current time and find out if the old time is more than 48 hours ago? This is what I have now: var hours = DateTime.Now.Ticks - data.DTM.Value.Ticks; //data.DTM = stored time stamp if (hours.CompareTo(48) > 1) //if link is more than 48 hours old, deny access. return View("LinkExpired"); } Comparing ticks seems like it's a very backwards way to do it and I know that the hours.CompareTo would have to be adjusted if I stick with comparing ticks. How can I just get a value for the number of hours that have passed?

• Processing an Integer Retrieved from a String in XSL

  I have a stored time value which is of the format H:mm:ss. The hours may be any value from 0 up through several days. This data is sent in an XML tag and processed by XSL to be displayed. The display that I want is of the format: D days, HH:mm:ss (hours/minutes) Where the last tag shows hours if HH is greater than 0, minutes if it is 0. Given the original HH, which may be more than 24, I know I need the floor of HH / 24 to get the days value. Then the original HH % 24 gives me the leftover hours. I have also handled the minutes and hours question using xsl:when and xsl:if. It's getting days and hours from the hours value that has me stumped.

For '4 hours', this works fine Time.parse('4 hours').to_i - Time.prase('0 hours').to_i => 14400 # 4 hours in seconds, yay However, this doesn't work for 48 hours (outside of range error). It also does not work for 3 days (no information error), etc. Is there a simple way to convert these strings into seconds?
